Total Recall (1990) - Full Reaction

Sorry it's been a minute!! It's been sick city over here with strep. We're on the mend though. Anyway, this was a wild ride! It definitely had that 90s action-flick vibe and I didn't mind! They may have gone overboard with some of the gross effect though haha.. Arnold was classic Arnold, which is not a bad thing! I actually enjoyed him in this. I know a lot of people don't like the remake of this, but watching the original has me curious. What do you guys think of the remake (without spoiling too much)?

Total Recall (1990) - Full Reaction

Comments

... if I knew that I was gonna watch you react to a blurred muted movie I would have never came here... already regret doing it

Shadow Kassadin

wow Jesus Christ....I can't believe it ..... Shouldn't have wasted my time or money with Patreon

Shadow Kassadin

I'll bet money Casey would like Eraser and End of Days. The last 2 decent (not great but decent) movies of the heydays of Arnie.

Ricardo Rodriguez

Yeah, that's definitely a Gen x / millennial version of total recall.

YodatheHobbit

Yep, and MacReady was The Thing. ;-)

Larry Darrell

You were thinking of 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.'

Kevin Ryan

Yep, everything the Rekall man said would happen, happened. So, the audience can believe what they want!

Ben Livingstone

I think you were thinking of "Pleasantville" when you were talking about people with implanted memories....

JD

I guarantee 99.9% of the people will say this is the better movie.

Jason Dolan

Jerry Goldsmith did compose the soundtracks for some of the Star Trek movies. He also did the soundtrack for Poltergeist as well as the music for the Disney attraction Soarin’.

Kevin Townsend

What about the guy they lobotomized?

Hail to the King

I loved how invested you were in this, we need more thrillers on the channel with conspiracy plots

Hail to the King

The remake tops my list of worst remakes ever. Don't bother.

Colin Gutierrez

It had an elevator going through the center of the planet, which is one of the absolute most absurdly unscientific things any writer could ever come up with.

Colin Gutierrez

Now reading my own comment, I am reminded of the Will Roger's quote: "Never miss a good opportunity to shut up."

ArsTropica

Since ArsTropica wrote, "Cassie offended by Arnold," I will ADD to the many ways that Arnold hates Cassie's way. I wrote how he is Potter, in "Wonderful Life." How Cassie hates Potter. Back to "Fuchs Quoting Stars": He married (BRUNETTE, ArsTropica), Maria Shriver. Asked what they have in common. He replied, "It's, it's ambition. We both have ambition." He doesn't love something. He loves Power.

David Fuchs

Probably more due to the protagonist's implied infidelity with this choice.

Steve Holton

Cassie looked genuinely offended when Arnold said he preferred a Brunette. 😆😘

ArsTropica

I really liked the remake. I thought it was smarter and less ridiculous*. And the women are much more interesting characters. ALso, there are a few callouts to the original that I think are pretty funny. (Slightly less ridiculous).

Don Ross

That's what I meant, "Good job toughing it out." I always say that the men here have a 12-step program for her. AND NO ONE KNOWS WHY.

David Fuchs

I haven't seen this since I was 13 or so. It was a lot less confusing this time. I probably won't watch it again any time soon but this was a fun rewatch. Good job toughing it out during all the face stuff. Like everyone else I also wonder if you thought it was all real or not.

My_Cousin_Mose

Perhaps you were thinking of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Bourne Identity, Blade Runner, Memento, Shutter Island, or maybe Inception when thinking of a similar movie?

Shawn Kildal

Cassie, nobody likes the remake... The Running Man to me is Arnold's best work, next to Predator which is in a class of it's own as S tier Action.

JohnnyUtah

PianoDean

More bad news. I see that PIB gets more comments here for these movies than for Dialogue movies. Patrons say, "Fuchs, that's Your opinion! Maybe sci-fi is better." Throughout our history, we never had a camera. The Drama & Lit (superhuman brain of Shakespeare) was not sci-fi.

David Fuchs

I haven't yet given up hope that I found a group that loves Writing & Acting, not only juvenile movies. Clay, I think you're the one who said "Special Effects Oscar." No, it's not a compliment when all other Categories ignore you. Patrons say, "Fuchs, don't worship Oscars." We never did! We always laughed when dumb Oscars robbed Fargo & picked the boring "The English Patient."

David Fuchs

I was very surprised with how good Arnold is on a horse.

Uncle Phoenix

I love it when new dads imitate Kuato with their baby’s in their Baby Bjorn’s. “Quaid”.

Uncle Phoenix

I like to think it was all part of his vacation experience. I watched Conan the Barbarian right after; I feel like that character was more suited to Arnold's talents..

Brian's Dog

As always, the remake is not as good as the original. I can only think of three or four remakes that were as good as the original: The Fly, The Thing, Cape Fear, and Scarface. Some people like the remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers better than the original; I don't. The same is true for Dawn of the Dead and Evil Dead. Can you imagine Cassie watching the Evil Dead remake?

Eddie Perkins

I love you love it 😆😘

Daniel Mooney

i hate you

pat on

did you even watch the movie it was an inspiration for the Matrix it's brilliant.

pat on

please don't watch the remake at least not on here it's completely brainless, the whole point of erasing his memory was to fool a psychic but there are no psychic's in the remake and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

pat on

Generally speaking, the remake is not well regarded, and although I live and die by this movie, I do think the remake is fun in its own right. It kind of does away with the all the social commentary, but it's a good mindless action movie.

Gary Giaimo

I would often freak my sister out by doing an impersonation of Kuato doing his "Open your mind" lines.

Brian McGovern

I'm not a fan of the remake, but I am curious to see if you would be; I say give it a shot and see what you think.

Ronny Boss

Based on a Twilight Zone episode, I think.

Chris Thom

He really goes for the over the top violence for some reason. I can never tell if he's making some kind of meta commentary or he just really enjoys it.

Chris Thom

Kind of a random suggestion, but this made me think of The Box by Richard Kelly for some reason. Strange, atmospheric sci-fi fable with Cameron Diaz, James Marston (Utah, whoop whoop), and Frank Langella. Don't think you've done a Richard Kelly film on the channel yet. They're an acquired taste, but definitely unique.

Chris Thom

"blue skys on mars, thats a new one!" never heard this line before or the salesman mentioning crooked taxi drivers. pretty convinced its all a memory implant.

rubberkidney

Cassie: "Did not love it. Did not hate it." She mentioned a couple of positive aspects to her. I don't think she really liked the movie but I don't know.

Clay F

41A 😂

Ramzi M. A. Ramzi

I just read here that Cassie only "somewhat liked it." Yes, it's not natural to "stretch TOO much." Cassie's taste can't quickly evolve THAT much. I called it the 12-step program male patrons have for her: "GOOD, CASSIE, YOU DID IT! MAYBE CARLY, NEXT MONTH." Cassie is exploring something, how will it end? If she finds that she doesn't love this, financial conflict of interest.

David Fuchs

I think you may be ready for another Paul Verhoeven boob buffet...the mid 90's classy, complicated cinematic masterpiece that is...Showgirls!! Nomi Malone is a sexy, complex, gyrating, randomly violent hero for the ages. She's a maaaainiac, maaaainiac on the floor. Might be worth seeing just for yucks...or maybe just read some of the BuzzFeed articles about it because they're hilarious. Or perhaps just watch his next film after this one...Basic Instinct. Classic noir thriller.

Chris Thom

Cassie it was fun revisiting this movie with you. Great Reaction. I knew it would be a bit much for you. Watch the remake. You will like the remake even more. It doesn't have all the grossness of this movie. Just action and some romance.

Rick Williams

The Mutants were not because of the air (at lest not directly) Mars has very little atmosphere so no ozone to block cosmic radiation, the early cheap domes didn't block the rays, thus mutations. So when all this air shows up an ozone might form protection after a while. Mars has really low gravity, about 38% of Earth, would have trouble holding on to all that air, may never be breathable for humans, plus Mars is freezing too cold, it would be like in the arctic Science aside, fun movie, and love the lingering doubt, was the whole thing his "vacation" Edit. Mars also has next to no magnetic field (compass useless) but that field also deflects cosmic radiation

Keith Jones

OK, that was an AWESOME reaction Cassie! I thouroughly enjoyed it, one of your best! I'm glad you at least somewhat liked it, me though, I love this movie! One of my all time favorites growing up, as a kid! I know you're probably thinking, "Wait you saw this as a kid? But it's too violet" Well, I can't help it, action and violence in the 90's such as this was something I really enjoyed watching, why else so I love other Arnold films like PREDATOR and TERMINATOR lol🤣 This film is what further cemented me as Schwarzenegger fan, plus despite her being a bad "girl" in this film, I had a huge crush on Sharon Stone (Lori) thanks to this movie and further after she would later star in another Paul Verhoeven film BASIC INSTINCT, staring alongside Michael Douglas! Well done again Cassie for recognizing certain actors in this movie like Ronny Cox as Cohaagen, yes he was in ROBOCOP as the main corporate bad guy Dick Jones lol! And of course Micahel Ironside as Richter, yes he was in FREE WILLY, however I'm surprised you didn't recognize him from another movie you've reacted on this channel, he was in TOP GUN! Speaking of Michael Ironside, there's a horror convention going on pretty soon from May 31st to June 2nd in Pasadena, CA called "Monsterpalooza" and he's going to be there, I'm gonna have a chance of meeting him face to face lol😁 I'm a little surprised you didn't recognize Rachel Ticotin (Melina) she was in CON AIR she was one the prison guards Sally Bishop! I know the remake gets a lot of crap mostly because it's not entirely the same as the OG and because the violence is watered down, but you know what, despite it's flaws, the remake is not that bad in my opinion! Like I said already, it's got good action, a great cast although one actress that's in it I cannot stomach seeing in it, but I say it's worth a watch for you Cassie! I personally prefer this one just because it's Arnold, and despite the violence level, I like the make up and effects they did in this, very convincing despite being obviously fake, but it was state of the art at the time and I think it holds up to this day! Anyway, glad you enjoyed it to a certain degree, give the remake a shot and formulate your own opinion, totally up to you! Love and support always, take care, hope the family feeling better, God bless y'all, you and Carly are the best, and as always [snaps fingers & winks] stay classy Cassie🥰😁😉🤗😇🙏✌👍🌹

Wesley White

Given all the hate; I took the time today and watched the Remake. Verdict: I thought that it was a decent action movie; and I even think that both Cassie and Carly would enjoy it.

Uncle Phoenix

So, Cassie, did he actually go to Mars? Or, was it all part of the Rekall memory implant?

Bryan Erickson

He got the girl and saved the entire planet....that was worth a measly 300 credits.

Chris Retzlaff

"Even for the day, the special effects were awful." No, they weren't. They were cutting edge and blew away everybody who watched the movie. Not only did TOTAL RECALL win the Oscar for best visual effects, but it did so not in competition. The Academy found the special effects in this film to be so remarkable that they didn't even bother to nominate any other movies that year and just gave it to this one. If you don't care for TOTAL RECALL, that's fine. I won't argue with you about the script, performances or its general cheesiness, though I disagree that it's one of Arnie's "weaker efforts" (and the more of his movies one watches, the more apparent that becomes). Different strokes for different folks after all, but let's not rewrite history here.

Stick Figure Studios

How about “douche canoe” ?

Dan M

You were trashing the movie before you watched it?

Clay F

I don't know for sure one way or the other, but based on what I can gather about Hollywood as a whole, some armorers/trainers are fools and some are not, and at the same time some directors are inclined to want better weapons handling and some are fine with Hollywood cliche crapulence. There have been some Arnie films (true lies springs to mind), where overall, HIS weapon handling was as good as any and better than most. I'm inclined to believe that this might have been a case where actors were told things and some of them paid attention and some didn't and the filmmakers didn't care enough to make a big deal out of it. Just my two cents.... If anyone has tangible evidence to contradict my theory, feel free to point me to it.

David Bennett

Yeah, that was just as awful as I remembered. One of Arnold's weakest films. Even for the day, the special effects were awful, the script was disjointed, the acting was sub-par and the whole thing was just cheesy. Don't get me wrong, I love me some cheese in an 80's action film... it's just part of the package. But that wasn't even cheese. That crap came out of a can... cheese whiz.

Richard Rolen

The new remake is really, really bad. I would skip it.

Benjamin Gerrald

Question for the "gun guys"- I just noticed, I wasn't looking for it but just noticed, Rachel Ticotin seems to be the only one with any trigger discipline (Arnold's is terrible). Do you think she has shooting experience or do you think all the guys were too "macho" to pay attention to the armorer?

Mike Lemon

Open your mind......

RJ MacReady

Or was it four?

Stick Figure Studios

Goldsmith was one of the greats.

Stick Figure Studios

I can't wait to watch this again. It's been a while, apparently. My copy is on VHS, believe or not. My VCR does actually work, but I think it's time to get an updated copy of this movie. To me, the remake feels like someone wrote a sci-fi story and Hollywood decided to use it for a reboot of Total Recall, so they just crammed a few additional scenes into it. It's basically a totally different movie.

Stephen Dias

"Hauser sucks!" I don't know that I've laughed harder at anything Cassie has ever said. X-D

Stick Figure Studios

This movie would have made her physically ill.

Stick Figure Studios

He was just being disarming. ;-)

Stick Figure Studios

I didn't realize that he had said that. That's really dumb (like Ridley Scott stating unequivocally that deckard is a replicant in BLADE RUNNER). The power of it is in its ambiguity. I gave Verhoeven more credit than that.

Stick Figure Studios

Dearest Cassie, how glad are you that Carley wasn’t there with you?

Lamar Smith

Ugh.

Stick Figure Studios

Interesting concept. Lousy movie.

Stick Figure Studios

I'd like to see a reaction to STARSHIP TROOPERS, but I'm pretty sure BASIC INSTINCT will be too explicit for her.

Stick Figure Studios

I missed the Mickey Jones cameo, but I do love Robert Picardo's "appearance" in the movie.

Stick Figure Studios

And "Hoosier."

Stick Figure Studios

A much better movie that it's reputation.

Stick Figure Studios

Wow that's interesting.

Clay F

The best movie set on Mars: "John Carter" (2012) based on the 1912 "Barsoom" series of books by Edger Rice Burroughs. The inspiration for most sci-fi writers & directors of the 20th Century.

JAKH

"Get your ass to Mars...Get your ass to Mars...Get your ass to Mars...Get your..."

Steve Mercier

Another peak Verhoeven action movie, cant be beat. Great reaction Cass, I lost it when u said Coppen Hagen :D Brilliant stuff.

D4RK

All anyone can ask from a film is that the audience be entertained… Total Recall succeeded. Thanks for another enjoyable reaction. For some reason, I always black-out the very ending of this film, with their faces. I guess that’s a good thing, because I’m always a little surprised by the ending… and grossed out. The scene that I always remember, and think is the worst part is the tracker up the nose scene, which wasn’t that bad this time. That ending though… whoa. Love this film. Praise Practical Effects. Besides the effects, another way this film is like The Thing, is that the ending can be seen in at least, 2 different ways. Did this really happen or was it all in his head. It’s a fun debate. I guess this was your first time seeing a film with Sharon Stone. You should see some more. Check out… Casino (1995)… directed by Martin Scorcese. (Oscar Nominated Role) The Quick and the Dead (1995)… a stylized Western, also starring Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio Sphere (1998)… a fun SciFi Thriller also starring Dustin Hoffman and Samuel L. Jackson Basic Instinct (1992)… an Erotic Thriller, also directed by Paul Verhoeven and co-starring Michael Douglas. It might be a bit too erotic for the channel… it’s been a while since I’ve seen it, but I know it’s a film that is definitely a big part of Pop Culture and from what I remember, a pretty darn good film too. Whether or not it’s a film that should be saved for the channel is for someone else to decide. (Actually Cassie is very, very shortly going to see Sharon Stone as her character in Basic Instinct… and she won’t even realize it) Lastly… anyone else catch the Gratuitous Mickey Jones Cameo. The drummer Mickey Jones was the guy talking to Arnold on the Mars train. This is now the 4th time Cassie has seen Mickey Jones pop up in a film… Vacation (1983), as the Sheriff/Mechanic Starman (1984), as a Truck Driver Tin Cup (1996), as a Bouncer/Musician 5th if you count him in the Soundtrack to The Big Lebowski (1998), playing with Kenny Rogers as the drummer for First Edition. I’m trying to guess which film Cassie will see him again in. Narrowed it down to two. Either… Dutch (1991)… John Hughes Thanksgiving film Or Sling Blade (1996)… Billy Bob Thornton masterpiece I’m pulling for Dutch, but either would be Cool. :-)

Larry Darrell

You've watched 2 Verhoeven movies, next up on the Verhoeven play list: "Starship Troopers" (1997) "Basic Instinct" (1992)

JAKH

the original is definitely better, but the remake is better than its reputation. Worth watching.

Walter

This movie has a lot of predictions for future technology that have come true: - facetime/zoom calls/ videophones - electric cars - self-driving cars - full body scan security checkpoints

JAKH

Favorite Comment, "Worst Kiss Nomination", I remember thinkng the same thing way back when I first saw this movie, but I could not stop laughing when I heard that. Thank you so much Cassie for watching, and the excellent reaction.

Tom Furze

Another Arnold sci-fi that you would like the interesting concept is "The 6th Day" (2000)

JAKH

Another movie based on a Philip K. Dick story that you might like is "Paycheck" (2003)

JAKH

Philip K. Dick also wrote "Minority Report" and "Bladerunner".

JAKH

Hilariously this is one of my mum's fave movies. She is a Baptist Christian Sunday school teacher.

pinkdino99

"Blue skies on Mars... that's a new one !" - Ernie. Yup. Verhoeven has stated that Quaid was dreaming despite what the novel says. Verhoeven is totally anti-establishment, so having the hero lose is his jam.

pinkdino99

That's the all important QUESTION! :)

Philip Alan

So Cassie (and others), did he go to Mars or was it all an implanted memory?

Mike Lemon

Ha ha. Same here. The relationship between those co-workers was always hilarious. Lull gets called a B***h by her boss, then she slaps her male assistant. Speaking of the assistant, played by David Knell. Cassie has seen him twice before opposite Tom Hanks, in Splash as one of the Moron Twins helping Eugene Levy, and in Turner and Hooch as Ernie, the driver of the car that Turner commandeers. A favorite of mine that he was in was the 80s teen comedy, Spring Break (1983). Maybe not for Cassie, but as far as 80s teen comedies go, this one has a lot of Charm.

Larry Darrell

If you don’t want the Gore then don’t watch anything directed by Paul Verhoven

Jason Mangen

If her copy plays slow (streaming uses a lot of 24 frames per second PAL/European versions vs NTSC 30-ish f.p.s.) just set your playback to 96% and they will sync up.

Mike Lemon

I was watching 4K Blu-ray and kept having to pause and un-pause quickly every 5-10 minutes. Just a minor annoyance, but an easy fix.

Larry Darrell

You also said it reminded you of The Thing! Rob Bottin did the special makeup effects for both movies.

Daniel N

At least, If Cassie watches the remake, she will learn how she feels about these remakes to Classic films and decide for herself, if it was necessary. She can start testing her Cinephile Knowledge.

Larry Darrell

I'm half an hour in, and it seems the Blu-ray version is slightly faster than the reaction. It seems that - at least the European remastered Studio Canal version I have - contains the movie with 24.000 fps, but the reaction seems to be for a 23.976 copy. Also, Cassie, the memory implant movie you are thinking about may be ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND with Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. It wasn't memory implant though, but erase.

Gábor Árki

This is the Ultimate Blonde vs Brunette film. Everyone had their favorite. I don’t want to offend anyone… so I won’t mention mine ;-)

Larry Darrell

I don’t care how many times I’ve seen it - I still FALL OFF THE SOFA laughing when Dr. Lull smacks her assistant. Not one of my favorite movies but an unexpectedly great reaction! (I haven’t seen the remake)

Ike

LOL, I am so confused by all the hate for the Remake. The Original is an Arnie Action Vehicle with rubber muppet heads. Seriously, how many people had HIGH EXPECTATIONS for the remake?

Uncle Phoenix

LOL. It’s an Arnie Action Vehicle. The audience knows that it’s not meant to be scientifically accurate.

Uncle Phoenix

He’s very likable in “Vision Quest”(1985).

Uncle Phoenix

Looking forward to checking out the reaction tonight. As others say, don't bother with the remake.

Guy Gordon

What,no "The Searchers' this time? :)

Celeste McAllister

This was a roller-coaster ride..Sharon Stone is gorgeous, she played the 'Siren' well! Table the remake Cassie,it is not worth the time and effort. :) ♡

Celeste McAllister

The remake is total crap. Funny that this reminded you of “Minority Report”; the original stories were written by the same author - Philip K Dick.

Daniel N

Yeah, but that’s just a COINCIDENCE. (Winking Eye Emoji)

Uncle Phoenix

I think that’s why Cassie said that it FEELs like another movie. It’s my illusion that, the Meta nature of the story is reminiscent of THE MATRIX, and that’s what she is comparing TOTAL RECALL to.

Uncle Phoenix

I would mostly agree, except that I would add that the Robocop Remake did have an amazing cast.

Uncle Phoenix

This movie is the reason why I paid such close attention in physics and chemistry. (Just had to know why blood “Boils” in low pressure environments.)

Uncle Phoenix

That would be awesome.

Uncle Phoenix

Not my favorite Verhoven film but it's way more fun than the new one IMHO. When is the original Arnold movie, Conan: The Barbarian gonna make the list? It's got a love story and everything!

Scott Macaulay

Wow... 'oxygen'... guess that's all it took..

Terry Yelmene

I like Ronny Cox more when he‘s not the bad guy like at the end of Bevery Hills Cop.

E. D.

Your reaction was exactly as I predicted. Loved the action, hated the gross effects. Lots of "Oh my gosh! Blech, blah, ugh. Gross!" and covering of eyes. There are so many movies and TV series based on stories written by Philip K Dick. Total Recall, Minority Report, The Adjustment Bureau, Blade Runner, A Scanner Darkly, Next, Paycheck, Screamers, The Man in the High Castle, and more. Sometimes the stories just inspired the movies, other times they are true adaptations.

D. T. Nelson

One notable thing about this movie that I don't think anyone has mentioned yet is not only that it won the Oscar for best visual effects, but it did so not in competition. It was singled out by the Academy as being so remarkable in the area of special effects, they didn't even bother to nominate any other films from that year. They just gave the award to this one.

Stick Figure Studios

hard to edit your copy of the movie runs slow i wish you'd just get them off the pirate bay.

pat on

BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR A WEEK SO EXCITED

MatthewBrown74m

Two more things: Cassie you are right. Jerry Goldsmith did do the score for Star Trek TNG. Other movies he scored that you've reacted to on the channel are The Mummy, Air Force One, L.A. Confidential, The Ghost And The Darkness, Forever Young, The Burbs, First Blood, Poltergeist, and Alien. I love his work! 🙂 And second,Cohaagen/Copenhagen 🇩🇰 can be added to the list of "Cassie's Funny Movie AKA Names" 👏🤣

Zane From Canada

Yes michael ironside who played richter played Dial in Free Willie.

Night King01

I do love that you said that doesnt look like arnold when hes pulling the bug out of his head. Its a massive puppet of arnold and not him. Also when he takes the big ladys head off its also another giant puppet of arnold. Kuato is also a massive puppet that took 12 people to operate to make him move. The exterior of the mars colony when quaid takes the train in was also a massive miniature set built on a soundstage. The whole film was shot in mexico city and on sets built there which was one of the only places that fit the future look they were looking for. The unhealthy air quality was a real challenge and everyone also ended up getting food poising except Arnold of course as he brought his own personal chef and producer Andrew Vajna who brought canned food from home. The director Paul Verhoeven was working so many long hours to get the film finished and exerting himself so much that he had an ambulance on standby in case he collapsed while filming the movie. The film actually won a special achievment oscar for special effects which means the academy forgoes normal voting in a category to recognize a film for its achievments. You said it was too much probably because the guy that did the makeup in this was Rob Botin. He did the creature effects for The Thing and Robocop as well as a lot of creatures in the original star wars.

Night King01

I watched the remake and have almost no memory of it, besides thinking it was terrible and the fact that I had to watch it in installments to get thru it (I’ve got a touch of OCD and it’s tough for me to leave something unfinished).

Just Plain Bob

Originally the film was gonna be way more serious but when arnold got involved the Director Paul Verhoeven decide it would be better to rework alot of it around arnolds strengths therefore making it more fun and adventure sci fi rather than serious bourne esque.

Night King01

I still remember the joke my dad told me while we were watching this. 🤭 "What book does Richter really hate?" "Farewell To Arms by Ernest Hemingway" 🤣🤣🤣

Zane From Canada

I watched this with my parents when I was 10 (yeah I was young 🤪) and have loved it ever since. I saw the remake once. It stays more true to the source material, but it's very crappy. It's on my list of Remakes/Reboots That Didn't Work right in between Red Dawn and Conan The Barbarian. 😁

Zane From Canada

I didn't watch the remake, and for one simple reason. Why would you remake a great action movie with Arnold in the lead role and directed by Paul Verhoeven with the same movie with Colin Farrell in the lead role and a hack director? (My opinion...) My guess is they just wanted to milk this concept for more money. I'll pass. I like the Total Recall that I've got. I don't need a cheap remake.

Alan Kobb

Alex Garland (director) loves to put females in the lead roles, it's pretty badass. Natalie Portman stars in "Annihilation" along with several other phenomenal female actresses.

Kit Taylor

I would LOVE to see you do a reaction to "Annihilation"... it would be the highlight of my month. Barack Obama put it on his top 10 movies of 2018... it went under the radar though (same director as "Ex Machina"), but it is fucking INCREDIBLE. Check out some articles... https://www.thedailybeast.com/annihilation-is-mind-blowing-and-the-best-sci-fi-film-in-years

Kit Taylor

Hey Cassie great reaction. Here is why you shouldn't bother with the remake... when in doubt I always look at the director. Paul Verhoeven has made a name for himself with this film... also Basic Instinct, Robocop, Starship Troopers and several others. The remake was pretty obviously a quick money grab as they hired a no-name director with zero films I even recognize on his IMDB. There are also bad directors, or at least ones that don't fit... for example when "Ender's Game" was finally made into a movie (my favorite book of all time), they put a relatively new director, Gavin Hood in charge. I was willing to give it a shot until reading both user and critic reviews. Sometimes movies are just... bad. A lot of times actually. A few directors right now that I will watch without even knowing anything about the movie... Denis Villeneuve (Dune), Christopher Nolan (Dark Knight), Alex Garland (Annihilation, my all time favorite movie), Spielberg, James Cameron... that's about it, otherwise I have to do a little research. But then again, not everyone views movies the way I do... I thought the "Footloose" remake was dreadful, but I know several people liked it, so ultimately it's your call. Really appreciate all the hard work you put into this!

Kit Taylor

Remake is garbage. Prior to release I spent an entire summer trolling the movie on the IMDB boards and even got a email from Sony asking me to back off and wait till I saw it

Hail to the King

Man, I got five kids to feed...

Chris Retzlaff

What the H-E-W? 😂 A good thing to know about the "no air" faces that makes they easier to laugh at is that they're basically puppets, highly realistic puppets of their heads. Kind of like Arnold first Terminator movie head in that eye surgery scene but better.

YodatheHobbit

"See you at the party, Richter" remains one of my favorite 90's Arnold quotes... and yeah, the fact that Quaid originally paid for memories of being a super spy, getting the girl (a brunette) and discovering alien cultures in an adventure called 'Blue Skies over Mars' can't be overlooked!

Story Archer

This one is a lot of fun. As for the remake. It's just middle of the road, kinda fun but forgettable. Can't wait to watch this reaction when I get out of work.

Katie Jackson

'That was like THE THING in special effects!' Yep, Rob Bottin did both THE THING and TOTAL RECALL. Semi-spoiler alert: I love that the film works both as a straightforward narrative where you can take everything at face value AND as something that takes place entirely in Quaid's head (he did buy a memory called 'Blue Sky on Mars', after all). Great fun. Directed by Paul Verhoeven who also did ROBOCOP. This is 10x the film that the remake is.

Alot of remakes of 80s/90s films just lack personality and the unique art direction of films of the 1980s to 1990s. Most of these films have a very retro futuristic envision of the future showcased in movies like Bladerunner, Aliens, Judge Dredd, Robocop, Total Recall etc. Robocop for example felt like a Frank Miller comic book brought to life, alot of parallel to The Dark Knight Returns in tone, satire, and themes. The Robocop remake on the other hand puts a modern day spin on the film and it just comes off as this very "generic" typical present day action movie that lacks a personality and identity. It does away with the retro futuristic look and goes for a more present day near future depiction of the future that just doesn't have the same charm or personality. This is something the Total Recall remake suffered from as well going from 90s retro futurism to a generic dystopian future that's overly serious and boring to look at. Also these reboots all just lack the satire, dark comedy, and ultra violence of Paul Verhoeven's movies. So its feels like something's missing whenever you watch these reboots and they don't come close at all. Fallout (2024) released April past has more Paul Verhoeven feel than both the Robocop and Total Recall reboots.

Wow, this was a great bit of fun to watch with you Cassie. There were so many times I thought "be careful what you you wish for Cassie!", meeting Kuato ("yeah I wanna meet him) and Richter's demise ("can we be done with yet?") were two of those, which are some of the more graphic moments. They were a few that even I didn't remember being so graphic, but the depressurising scenes have always stuck with me, all the way back from the '90s, they are more graphic to me than all the gun-fighting (I was probably too young when I first saw it). There was one moment I particularly enjoyed, and there wasn't even a word said by Cassie. It was when "Melina" said "What a bitch!" referring to Lori, and Cassie had expression that was like "yep, fair point, can't argue with you there". Ronny Cox, the quintessential '80s corporate-style villain - if we get to a particularly popular film/franchise on the Popcorn app, he may get redemption. Rachel Ticotin was in "Con-air", she was the female guard on the plane. Michael Ironside, others have already said was in "Top Gun" and see him again soon in one the X-men movies. Others have said it, the remake if very much in mould of "Minority Report" and a being Philip K. Dick story it does fit that way. As a Sci-fi movie it an okay movie (I did like the concept of how they split the two "worlds" of Earth, which was the equivalent of the Mars/Earth split in this movie), but as a remake of to this movie is just to big of an albatross for to carry with the quality of movie it is. Last thing, Cassie may not have realised that a movie that she watched and enjoyed away from the channel (it was mentioned in a reactions and actually may be a favourite) is based on a short story by the same author of the "Total Recall" short story, Philip K. Dick. The movie is the "Adjustment Bureau" with Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. Not sure how close it is to the short story, as it isn't quite as grim or dire as "Total Recall" or "Minority Report", but certainly does explore what is is one's control and what isn't., which is similar to the other movies.

The remake is a total dumpster fire. Don't waste your time, life is too short. I actually fell asleep during that movie which was quite a feat for a film that consists of 90 minutes of continuous automatic weapons fire.

This is a classic Arnold vehicle, a movie that wouldn’t have been as much fun without him in the role of Douglas Quaid (i.e. the 2012 remake). His classic one-liners definitely take the edge off of the violence. But despite its violence quotient, its 90s sci-fi violence with some cheesy effects and make up. Its directed by Paul Verhoeven, who also directed RoboCop and Starship Troopers, so the violence was to be expected. But I don’t think its AS violent as those other 2 movies. I love the story and the concept, and its a non-stop roller coaster ride for the bulk of the movie. Its definitely a great popcorn flick, and far superior to the remake. I don’t think the remake is horrible…its a good movie in its own right. But it doesn’t hold a candle to the original, even with Colin Farrell (who is definitely no Arnold Schwarzenegger ), and advanced special effects and technology. I would watch the remake, Cassie, just so you can compare the 2 movies. That would be a fun reaction.

The remake isn't terrible, or even particularly bad. It's greatest flaw is that it's very unmemorable, compared to the original. I actually barely remember watching it, but didn't mind it while it was playing. You might actually like it better than the original if the grossness factor was an issue for you.

Hans Olav Sletnes

The remake changes the story a little. Still a good action movie. It's worth watching.

Total Recall is great 90's action fun. Many great Arnold one liners. Ultra violence courtesy of Paul Verhoeven, who brought Cassie Robocop. Poor Rachel Ticotin, who received second billing in the cast. She was brought into the movie when it was about half over and was thus totally overshadowed by Sharon Stone who had the flashier role. Michael Ironside is a great baddie and has a spectacular ending in the film. Great fun all around.

Being reminded of Minority Report was a good connection. It’s also based on a Philip K Dick short story. Blade Runner is the other Philip K Dick movie you’ve seen and it’s Blade Runner 2049 that has the memory implant stuff. Dick had psychotic episodes and a lot of his work deals with this line between reality and perception of reality and how can we trust our what our minds are saying. The scene with his “wife” and the doctor trying to get Quaid to take his pill jumps out to me in this kind of silly film as being completely real and tragic.

Jacob King

Paul Verhoeven does tend to make his movies very graphic. That was because he is Dutch and he grew up during the 2nd world war, so he was exposed to the grim reality of war and formed his opinion that violence was indeed bloody and not your typical Hollywood violence which I guess is very muted. Not everyone's cup of tea, I get it. By the way, the Lillian is not Danish. His name was not Copenhagen. I did get a laugh out of that. I think I am going to start making my own shirts to wear that have some of your classic faux pas names. Clint Edgewood, Virgo Mortensen with Ed Harris image and vice versa.

Brian McGovern

I believe that Cassie said that Basic Instinct is one of her Mom's favorite movies.

Clay F

Yeah the grossness was why I was thinking Carly would definitely not like it, it's a great story, all of Philip K Dick's film adaptations are, but Paul Verhoeven really loves his slimy, gory, gritty, gushy special effects. But another great sci Fi movie I hope you'll get around to sooner than later is GATTACA, I think you'll really like the characters and the story.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

I like the Arnold charisma. They did give him an attractive-looking wife in Sharon Stone. What the H E double L It is kinda hard to unsee their faces like that. An updated/modernized version of Total Recall is a good idea, but Total Recall (2012) (currently streaming on Netflix) (IMDb = 6.2) is not the greatest. I like Colin Farrell generally. Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel are attractive.

Clay F

Everyone here made sure she wasn't going to join Cassie. It's not that bad. Haha! It's a LOVE STORY!!!

Philip Alan

The Love Story always WINS!! Great reaction! :)

Philip Alan

Lori was played by the great Sharon Stone. I couldn’t think of a film you’d seen her in so I looked through her filmography and saw that she was on ‘The Practice’, which I believe you’ve seen. She won an Emmy for it. We could do with more of her on the channel. ‘Casino’ with De Niro and Joe Pesci, directed by Scorsese, is probably her best acting role. I would’ve said ‘Basic Instinct’ but that’s probably a bit too racy for this channel.

Shehab Dawoud

Yeah, this has some typical, Paul Verhoeven level gore and violence. That is why many of us wrote this may not be a good one for Carly. From the ones I've seen from Verhoeven, his Dutch WW2 movie BLACK BOOK (2006) is his most restrained film IMO, but still rated R and does not shy away from the harsh realities of its setting. Btw I think it is voted as the best Dutch film ever made by the Dutch public and I can highly recommend it. I wouldn't necessarily call the 2012 version a remake, because it did change many things. More like both are adapted from and inspired by the same short story. My take was it is not great not terrible. I find it lacks many things that makes this one a cult classic. But unlike this, it is PG-13 thus would be Carly compatible.

Gábor Árki

Kuato says “Open your mind Cassie “😁

Wes

The remake was very boring to me. The actors in it have far better movies that should be seen.

Hiraoka Toru

The remakes of Total Recall and Robocop were absolutely made for the brain dead “oh, it’s got CGI so it must be better than the original” crowd. A couple of years back, there was speculation that a Jaws remake was in the works. I saw numerous comments to the effect that a remake would obviously be superior to the original because the director could use CGI to make the shark more realistic. How to you even respond to that level of stupidity?

Just Plain Bob

To this day, Total Recall remains one of my favorite Arnold movies: action, special effects, humor, this just had it all; the “remake” never happened as far as I’m concerned

JL_83

Not a coincidence Cassie you mentioned Minority Report, because Philip K Dick also wrote the story for that one, as well as the story that inspired Blade Runner, among many more. He was an interesting writer. A Scanner Darkly is a deep cut not many people seem to know, it uses an odd animation effect, sort of superimposed over live action, stars Keenu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Woody Harrellson, and Robert Downey Jr. I like it, but I'd say most people would find it just weird, kind of funny, Woody and RDJ are hilarious together, but an interesting little story, I think.

It's a little late for me, but I do plan on watching this reaction soon! This is one of my favorite Arnold action movies for certain! Sorry you and everyone else is sick with strep, hope the kids are okay! I did see the remake and I even own it on blu-ray, it's okay, the OG is where it's at all the way! But the remake in my opinion is worth a watch, it has great action and a great cast, although there's an actress in it that I just cannot stomach, I won't say her name! It even has a lot of call backs to the OG which is a nice touch in my opinion lol! Hands down though this one is the best! I'll watch it at some point today and give you my commentary later! Hope y'all get well soon, love and support Cassie, you're the best, God bless🥰😇🙏🤗😉👍✌🌹

Wesley White

The remake is absolute crap.

Just Plain Bob

I didn't even bother with the remake... Arnold is the GOAT action star ✨

Kuskesh Haramzadeh

The reason this film is so good is because its Paul Verhoeven at his very best. This is my favorite film of his. Just a fantastic director. One of a kind. Arnold is also in rare form. This is also my favorite Arnold film. What a gem! Thanks for reacting to this!!

Farbod

For people who never saw the og, I'm sure the remake has some merit. But at the end of the day, this particular remake has the updated cgi flash, but not the substance. The OG for all it's 90s vibe and other pro's and cons, it's made with a vision by a high quality film maker and the remake is not. There is little magic in the remake and there is no need to see it other then to satisfy your curiosity.

Pickupthepieces76

The Total Recall remake and the Robocop remake both embody the worst of contemporary American studio filmmaking - soulless, sexless, humourless, generic, and more focused on placating the widest possible audience rather than taking a single risk. Meanwhile, my guy Verhoeven is out there making films like Elle (which he tried and failed to get made in the US) and Benedetta. If he attempted to bring his sensibility into American cinema today, he wouldn't get past the first pitch meeting.

So looking forward to this. Wasnt Carly going to watch this with you?

Brian McGovern

Glad you're feeling better. The main differences are the second movie has more modern effects, and the first one has Arnold and all the joy he brings to the screen.

GomezAddams

Oh here we go! Can't wait for the escalator...
