Hey hey you you!

Hi guys! First things first

EXTRA BUTTER TIER LIVE TONIGHT AT 7:30 MST. Just a fun, casual hangout, AMA, maybe watch some trailers! I hope you come HANG!

Second item of business, THANK YOU for all your suggestions for the foreign movie poll-there were so many so we did two! Go vote on those ASAP!

I hope you all had a great weekend. We had some family in town which was great except I've felt a little bit under the weather the past few days. womp womp. In other news we have some big movies this week! Which are you most excited for? Coming up still in the next bit is Smokey and the Bandit for our last movie madness winner, Total Recall, The Last Action Hero (our #100-250 poll winner) and continuing with X-Men, TNG Season 4 and my popcorn pick for May which will be U 571 or Pleasantville?

Per the suggestion of one of you I started The Newsroom TV Show, I am flying through it and almost done and I AM LOVING IT! I'm also reading Carrie Soto is Back for Book Club but I told myself I can't start it until my laundry is done so probably never. I'm planning to go on a double date with Carly this weekend to go see Fall Guy in theatres. What are you watching or reading or excited about lately?

Ok, love your guts, hopefully see you tonight! I'll post a link before!

Cassie

Comments

Haha. “Hey hey you you…” I love the “with Carly” tags on some of the movies. lol Good to clarify, eh?

Steve

I have tons of John Wayne movies. I love the classics. Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda, Spencer Tracy and Bob Hope just to start. People don't realize how many modern movies are just remakes of old movies with a few things changed. And not even mentioning so many great female stars. Know modern is going to be the main focus, just wish the older ones could sneak in on a regular basis.

William Brownlee

And what ever you do, don't forget the old Cary Grant movies...classic Hollywood at it's finest.

crazyivan

There are many John Wayne movies that are worth watching. From She Wore A Yellow Ribbon to Donovan's Reef and North To Alaska to The Cowboys (or his last movie - The Shootist.....keep up the good work Cassie and Carly!

crazyivan

I think it has been a long time since you watched an old movie (30's to 50's). African Queen was the last one I saw. I know old movies are at a huge disadvantage compared to newer movies. I really don't think you can really enjoy movies unless you know where so many of the tropes come from. I am sure you could get hundreds if suggestions if you asked, but I am going to start with a Western. Red River with Jihn Wayne. One of the few where Wayne is close to being the villian in the movie. A much more gritty take for a western than most of the ones Wayne did. If you want one of the funnier ones there is McClintock. I truly think you should pick at least one old movie every two months. Thanks.

William Brownlee

Looking forward to Apocalypse Now

Clay F

Great movie Mel Gibson is amazing

Kevin Mazza

I actually agree with you that the 1980 version is superior in terms of storytelling and, in many cases, characterization. it also follows the book much more closely. That said, the new version is exceptionally well made/acted/directed and does a great job of adapting the story to be more Japanese/Toranaga focused than the novel/1980 miniseries was. In a perfect world, I'd brundlefly both the 1980 version and the 2024 version together.

Matt Rose

Honestly X3 felt the most like the comics of the first three.

YodatheHobbit

You should try Conspiracy theory with Mel Gibson, Julia Robert's and Patrick Stewart.

Jayson Phillips

I'll take a pass on apocalypse now memories I like to keep buried

Kevin Mazza

It is indeed a challenging film.

Stick Figure Studios

Oh, I'm sure it will captivate her however she watches it.. but I think that film in particular benefits from the immersive quality of a big screen experience.

Stick Figure Studios

Enough people are telling her to watch the theatrical cut that I'm confident that's the one she'll check out.

Stick Figure Studios

I'll agree that the new Shogun has great production values, but apart from that, unfortunately, I think the 1980's miniseries is overall better even with all that it left out from the book. In the new miniseries, I'm not a fan at all of how much characterization has been missing for the big three main characters (Blackthorne, Mariko, and to a slightly lesser extend Toranaga), they all feel very one-note in comparison to their book counterparts. Just my own two cents, though.

Christopher B.

@Mike 'LL - Cary Grant? The real star of that movie is the leopard. Should have won an Oscar.

Richard Maurer

I can take or leave the Star Trek episodes. I was never a big fan of Next generation. Bring on DS9 and Voyager that's the good stuff. But this is a great selection of upcoming films.

Don

Cassie, being that Jean-Luc Picard leads the Enterprise with his “philosophy” yet Will Riker runs the ship as his Exec in his “style” have you felt by now that the Enterprise is more Picard’s ship or Riker’s ship? (It’s a mental debate worthy of a Star Trek fan.)

Elias Shaikh

@Richard- McMartin is pretty terrifying if that counts.

Mike Lemon

Well they also don't have Cary Grant in them, but BRINGING UP BABY does!!!!!

Mike LL

Cassie, you seam to really like thrillers! Have you seen the pelican brief? Denzil Washington, Julia Roberts. Think you would love it.

Mark White

She has a reaction to it on the channel.

Tim Raths

You know, these three films all have one thing going against them - They don't fit in a Classic Horror poll!

Richard Maurer

Pleasantville

Richard Maurer

Consider the movie What Dreams May Come with Robin Williams if you have not yet seen it.

Netherburn

That’s what I was thinking.

Larry Darrell

Dang, I thought it was The Searchers.

Richard Maurer

I get it Tim. I'm getting a little burned out on reaction videos myself. I keep skipping videos in my feed because I just don't care. There are only a handful of reactors (Cassie included) that I still watch the majority of their videos.

Richard Maurer

If anyone cares, I have finally found my elusive pair: The Movie Journey! Thanks to those who tried to help me. (All this should not be understood as implying that they are (or aren't) particularly worthy; I simply wanted to track down a specific reaction of theirs. Of all the reactors mentioned here, I am partial to Nice Dude Movie Night. (I suppose I should also have ruled out the OctoKrool twins as suspects.))

Happy Hanukkah

A sure fire hit for both Cassie and Carly

Dan M

Newsroom was one of the best shows on TV Jeff Daniels was great on that show, especially when we went off the cuff. That scene at the college when they were talking about the United States, was unforgettable my family still talks about that scene. Sorry had to throw the scene in it's just too powerful https://youtu.be/wTjMqda19wk?si=PlnAG7Tv5gB9NIPk

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

🤣🤣🤣

Björn Karlsson

Yeah, #30 on the AFI Top 100

Clay F

Yeah, younger people never get the CB stuff.

Clay F

Show Me Love.

Happy Hanukkah

She's got more range than most of them. One of my other favorite channels is now 75 percent anime, Indian movies, and teen Netflix series. For the clicks. Kind of heartbreaking.

Chris Thom

Agreed. But I first saw it on the shittiest little TV ever and still thought it was great. The film has kind of a dreamy quality to it so the lower definition kind works too.

Chris Thom

Negatory on the Redux, only because of the immensely boring section in the middle….

JRCortez

(Small spoiler alert) The only reason I hope it’s not Redux is because of the middle section on the French farm. Man, that is booorrringgg…

JRCortez

@Shehab: I know she was nervous to watch it, but she has also admitted to being pretty tenacious about seeing just about every war movie ever made. This is what gives me hope that she will eventually enter into the sublime cinema of Terrence Malick with THE THIN RED LIBE.

Stick Figure Studios

(Small spoiler alert)…. I hope she DOES NOT watch the Redux. Most of it is great, but that middle part on the French farm is just plain BOOOORRRING…..

JRCortez

The Internet has really made this kind of thing (discovering old radio shows) immeasurably easier. I can listen to literally every single episode of any series I want for free at my leisure. My cup runneth over.

Stick Figure Studios

What movie is that again? I forgot already.

Richard Maurer

@Dan M - True and that's the result of her being on top. Other, smaller channels won't risk their income stream, at least not very often.

Richard Maurer

Both?

Richard Maurer

Me too. That's going to be an intense one for Carly.

Stick Figure Studios

True Romance...Great Movie!

Patrick Fitzgerald

I was thinking the same thing. I have a feeling that Smokey and the Bandit is going to be like watching a foreign film for Cassie, but with no subtitles. It might very well be a completely different world for her. I thought about making a study sheet, and pre-explaining… Coors Beer and bootlegging, CB Radio, Running Blocker, Handles, Smokeys, Convoys, Kojaks with a Kodak and 70s sensibilities. Then I realized it was just too much. It’s gonna be what it’s gonna be. She’s gonna be confused through most of it, and she won’t be the first. When Smokey and the Bandit was released in 1977, it was a Huge Hit all over the country, and it was most people’s introduction to this World. They learned from this film. It’s kinda fun to watch her be confused sometimes. There is one Element of Smokey and the Bandit that she should definitely understand though.

Larry Darrell

Definitely dark. Immediately struck me as one of the best films ever made, though. Literary allusions to the novel and others made it great.

Chris Thom

Looking forward to War of the Worlds!

RX-1

Great! Then she should watch a movie so in the Patreon consciousness everyone has heard about it- Indictment- The McMartin Trial (1995).

Mike Lemon

But, is she saying she really, really likes us, or is she telling us to take care of our digestive systems?

Larry Darrell

Unfortunately not. (He never became a regular of mine, for whatever reason, but I don't even remember him without his wife.) Thanks.

Happy Hanukkah

"Nobody has heard of it"?! What are you talking about, I'll wager every participant in this forum has heard of it! Repeatedly! :-)

Happy Hanukkah

Please do Pleasantville, it’s fantastic!

Aaron Ritchie

I saw that in the theater. Pretty intense.

Stick Figure Studios

A movie I kick myself for not having watched in the best possible quality is Gravity.

Happy Hanukkah

Hey Stick, I just replied to Dave’s comment about the Captain Blood radio play, and informed him of a website… https://www.doctormacro.com/index.html That has a TON of old radio shows. There are a bunch of Screen Director’s Playhouse episodes on there. Also check out Lux Radio Theatre for even more. I talked more in Dave’s comment. Check it out if you’re interested. Forgot to mention, I used to listen to these all the time driving to work. I was driving more than an hour to and from work, so it was like watching a movie in my head, twice a day, in my car.

Larry Darrell

Hey Dave, I believe the Captain Blood radio play was part of the Lux Radio Theatre. This was a weekly Radio show hosted by Cecil B. DeMille. There is a website… https://www.doctormacro.com/index.html Under the Tab, “Radio Shows,” you’ll find a TON of old radio programs from the 30s, 40s and 50s, all alphabetized. If you go to Lux Radio Theatre, you’ll find a whole bunch of radio plays of films, in order by airdate, featuring the original cast. What I find most interesting, is when it’s not the original cast. For instance… My Favorite Wife with Laurence Olivier and Rosalind Russell The Philadelphia Story, with Robert Taylor, Loretta Young and Robert Young The Awful Truth, featuring Cary Grant and Claudette Colbert Shadow of a Doubt, with William Powell and Teresa Wright His Girl Friday, with Claudette Colbert and Fred MacMurray Suspicion, with William Powell and Olivia de Havilland The African Queen, with Humphrey Bogart and Greer Garson The DoctorMacro website also has a TON of HQ scans of Actor/Actress Photos, Movie Posters, Movie Clips. Thought you might be interested. PS: sometimes you might find a radio program that is Sped up and high pitched. You’ll need to play it in a player that allows you to slow it down.

Larry Darrell

I love “Smokey and the Bandit” but am a bit worried that some of the cultural references will be lost on Cassie, as well as the humor. For instance, I’ll be surprised if she grasps the CB culture that was so prevalent at the time and plays such a big role in the film. I also suspect that she won’t understand the humor of Jackie Gleason’s character and think it’s likely that she’ll simply find him to be unlikable/unpleasant. That sort of humor is frowned on today. I feel like someone should post a primer about the culture of the mid to late 70s, just so Cassie and other younger viewers will understand why the some of the characters act the way they do, etc.

Just Plain Bob

It’s been 15+ years since I’ve seen it. I’m now wondering if my opinion will have changed.

Larry Darrell

Yes! I had some of those as well. I remember it was called "Screen Directors Playhouse" and I had the LIFEBOAT, SHADOW OF A DOUBT, CALL NORTHSIDE 777 and THE KILLERS episodes (all of which I listen to before I ever saw the actual films themselves).

Stick Figure Studios

Watching the interview- Cassie- You like courtroom dramas and the law, you should try this little know movie called Indictment- The McMartin Trial (1995). It will never win a poll and nobody has heard of it, but I give a 85% chance of it being liked if not loved.

Mike Lemon

Can't remember which I saw first. I think 1917 was the first one that got sent to my algorithm about four months after she filmed it. Started joining the chats around Matrix Reloaded maybe? Or Dirty Dancing? The LIVEs are super fun.

Chris Thom

Oh make me over...I'm all I wanna be

Chris Thom

There's some great parts to X3. All the ingredients were there. Just probably would've been better if Singer finished the trilogy.

Chris Thom

Agreed. I read the book Heart of Darkness in high school before I saw AN. I recall thinking "Wow. That was way darker than the book."

Brent Petty

Yes. I'd include those also (except maybe DEER HUNTER which I don't remember quite as well as it's been a long time since I watched it).

Stick Figure Studios

Just watched your interview Cassie. Great job! A lot of fun to watch.

Brent Petty

If you take a good look at Cassie’s full list of reactions, there is good representation of movies and shows several different decades that cover almost every genre. And now she’s expanding that list to include foreign films.

Dan M

I'd add: Interstellar, Close Encounters, Deer Hunter, Gone With the Wind (if we ever get there) and Dr. Zhivago.

Above Average Dave

YT pretty much cancels out any chance for classic, foreign, and other less popular genres to get seen on a regular basis. Sucks, but that is the simple reality of the situation.

Richard Maurer

Yeah, the Cruise WotW is fine too.

Richard Maurer

Any chance it was Holden Hardman? He reacts with his wife now, but he used to react with his buddy to everything.

Cole Jennett

I feel your pain, my friend, but I encourage you to stick with it. Every now and again a truly great classic film gets through and makes it all worthwhile. I mean, even this week she's watching APOCALYPSE NOW!

Stick Figure Studios

Two movies undeserving of their overwhelmingly negative reputation imo.

Stick Figure Studios

The horror, the horror.

Stick Figure Studios

I would prefer the 1953 "War of the Worlds" over the Tom Cruise one.

Dustin Denner

If you think this channel has recency bias you're really going to be disappointed by the rest of them.

Richard Maurer

👆This.

Larry Darrell

Ah OK, for some reason I don't get community posts in my recommended anymore. Which is aggravating because I miss all the polls

Hail to the King

She posted this on the community tab for the channel on YouTube.

Tim Raths

Keep in mind that we had to wait MONTHS between “The Best of Both Worlds” part 1 and part 2.

Daniel Turbyfill

TNG Best of Both Worlds!

Anthony Goodwin

Apocalypse Now is going to be a tough watch. When you're done watching you'll feel like Dorothy, at home in your bed, saying "There's no place like home. There's no place like home."

resinmonkey .

Dan M: It's a very good reaction channel. Just not for me.

Grad

Robert Durant: Too much recency bias.

Grad

I never speculate on which films I don't think Cassie will like, so no comment on Apocalypse Now ;-)

Richard Maurer

🔥Hot take - X3 isn't nearly as bad as most fans say it is.

Richard Maurer

If I left every reaction channel where I didn't get my way the majority of the time I wouldn't be a member of any reaction channels

Richard Maurer

I don't know if Cassie's already mentioned it but she did an interview this week: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMp7tHYf3yk

Hail to the King

Hope you're feeling better. Can't wait for Smokey and the Bandit.

Stuart Guthrie Jr.

Its okay if you don’t like the content, but there’s no need to be a downer.

Dan M

x3 and war of the worlds? are we being punished.

pat on

Why?

Robert Durant

Toodle-oo!

rakesh

If I may make one final suggestion, Cassie: if it is at all possible for you to do so, I would strongly urge you to watch APOCALYPSE NOW in your home theater. There are a number of movies that greatly benefit from the big screen presentation and APOCALYPSE NOW (with its immersive sound design, spectacular locations, gorgeous cinematography and impressionistuc use of color) is absolutely one of them. I watched it on a TV for years before finally going to the theater during it's recent re-release and it was truly like I was seeing it for the first time. There are just some films (APOCALYPSE NOW, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, etc) that need to be experienced that way.

Stick Figure Studios

Hmmm. Maybe it's time for me to move on from this channel.

Grad

I’m just happy it was represented by Purdue. Otherwise… I doubt it would’ve been on the schedule anytime soon.

Shehab Dawoud

I actually have a CD with a radio recording that recreated CAPTAIN BLOOD with original cast including Errol Flynn, Olivia de Haviland and Basil Rathbone recreate their roles for a radio audience. I learned the studios would do these on occasion to get more legs out of what we'd call the "IP," and with the actors under contract, they often reprised their roles (in this case with great gusto). It's like a fantastic table read with sound effects and a studio orchestra, and complete with the original commercials.

Above Average Dave

The only scene from the REDUX that I wish was in the theatrical cut is *SPOILERS AHEAD* when Kurtz reads the Time magazine article. I find that scene very important to his character.

Stick Figure Studios

I've been pushing that one for a long time.

Stick Figure Studios

I agree. The other versions have their pros and cons but the original is still the definitive one.

Stick Figure Studios

When I was in Jr. High I got really into old radio shows (like THE LONE RANGER, THE GREEN HORNET, THE SHADOW, etc). I would buy tapes of episodes that they sold at the bookstore and listen to them over and over again. I particular liked Orson Welles' clever WAR OF THE WORLDS broadcast (this was before I ever saw CITIZEN KANE, so I didn't even know who Welles was). I had a vague notion of the stir it caused from pop culture (and movies like SPACED INVADERS), but had never heard the actual recording itself. I must've listened to that thing at least a hundred times throughout my adolescence.

Stick Figure Studios

I second the theatrical cut

Stick Figure Studios

Apocalypse now is a pretty heavy movie

Kevin Mazza

Yeah, APOCALYPSE NOW is gonna be tough at times and just confusing at others, but it's essential viewing.

Stick Figure Studios

For my money, it's the greatest war film ever made. It's in my top 20 and I've been pushing it on this channel for a long time (the theatrical version is the one I've been recommending).

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, I'm not a fan of PLEASANTVILLE.

Stick Figure Studios

I mentioned AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD for you. They just decided not to include it.

Stick Figure Studios

She tends to avoid anything that may be polarizing politically. But I agree, I’d look more forward to seeing her reaction to it than almost anything.

Cole Jennett

Easily on the TV Scene Mount Rushmore

Cole Jennett

Oh The Newsroom!! I loved that show too!... Jeff Daniels' speech in the Pilot is worth the price of admission.

Michael Enos

None of you had a shot anyway.

Richard Maurer

I've got a fever for classic horror, and the only cure is a Classic Horror poll!

Richard Maurer

Why didn't she react to The Newsroom??? That's all I ever wanted :'(

Eli van Aggelen

Yeah, it's one of those rare films that manages to become much more than a sum of its parts. It's insane that such a nightmare of a production can manage that. Perhaps it wouldn't have if everything had gone smoothly. And yeah, I'm very curious to see Cassie's reaction. It's one where I'm not really sure how it'll go. I could understand it going either way.

Guy Gordon

Probably because of all the heartbreak. lol

Chris Thom

Have no clue if she'll appreciate the film or not. So curious, though. For myself it immediately took a spot in my top ten. That movie is dark super but magical. Love all the literary references mixed with a real life war that had barely ended at the time.

Chris Thom

Definitely one you just have to roll with. Because the premise is very stupid logistically. Think of it like an odd dream that helps you work through some stuff and it gets better.

Chris Thom

I think she's already seen Seven. Skeleton Key was talked about a bit around Halloween, I think. The Day the Earth Stood Still was on a poll. Expanse would probably be waaaay too many episodes. Not sure about the others.

Chris Thom

Shots fired. Lol. Bill Hader has some funny clips about that movie.

Chris Thom

Can't wait for The Best of Both Worlds, Smokey and the Bandit, and Pleasantville. Hope you get to feeling better Cassie. Hope Carley is doing good too.

Brian Wood

So this is totally off the subject but I know you're a Swiftee so I heard on the radio that Courtney love crapped all over Taylor calling her music "not important" I was like well Courtney when has your music ever been..... I stopped myself. I was running through her songs in my head Doll parts, Malibu, Celebrity Skin, Then I stopped at Violet, Violet that female empowering, male bashing song. Which OMG Courtney and her band Hole. Hellayeah. I had the biggest crush on Courtney Love and as much I think she shouldn't have pissed off the most ravenous fan base in the world. I love Taylor Swift, but Courtney Love/ Hole, has her beat on this one. https://youtu.be/cH_rfGBwamc?si=DHv7pkOTfC_9cBI5

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

Thanks man, that's two off the list. Do you remember which of her reactions was the first one you saw? Mine was 300. Never thought I'd like a reaction channel but I was very wrong.

Ahmad Copeland

I sent her a DVD of The Day The Earth Stood Still but she has yet to watch it. I know she said she seen deja Vu before and she saw seven before the channel but the others I don't think she's seen.

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

I appreciate that. The already seen page is gonna be clutch. Thank You

Ahmad Copeland

I feel remiss. I knew that Apocalypse Now was coming up, and also that we were heading for a foreign movie poll, and I did not suggest Aguirre, the Wrath of God?!?! I mean, put a conquistador helmet on Cassie and she's practically indistinguishable from the title character! :-P :-P :-P

Happy Hanukkah

Ah, from the first Poppies, CinemaRules. No not them, but thanks to you and Cassie for the suggestion. It's also not Catch-up Packets or Ramblers. Which leads me to further add that my pair are Caucasian and probably North-American.

Happy Hanukkah

The "new good morality" is where it falls apart, but that discussion has to wait until it has been watched.

Mike Lemon

Seven was watched pre-channel. I don't remember seeing any of the others discussed but they might have been. I think she would love Life, hopefully it gets a little love. Her "already seen" list- https://letterboxd.com/pib1/films/

Mike Lemon

Clay, that almost sounded... preachy. :-)

Happy Hanukkah

Same! But I suggested she pick both and make it a double feature. If you haven’t seen it, U-571 is also such a good movie with a great cast.

Dan M

This is a question for more the active members: I'm new here and I freakin love this channel. But since i'm about 3 years late i was wondering if any of these movies have already been in the conversation before or in a previous poll and lost or never discussed so I can suggest for the channel. Movies are Dèjá Vu (2006), The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008), The Tomorrow War (2021), Life (1999), Seven(1995), The Skeleton Key (2005) and last the TV Show The Expanse (2015). Help me out everybody, Thanks in advance.

Ahmad Copeland

That's a good comparison.

Stick Figure Studios

Not preachy imo. A new good morality that overcomes archaic preachy.

Clay F

I agree with you on your opinion of The Last Stand. I liken this movie to Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. It was good, but not my favorite, and it was necessary to see in order to move on through the series.

Dan M

I literally yelled YES! Before I realized there was another option.

Katie Jackson

Pleasantville is good, but gets very preachy.

Mark Vaderr

Newsroom is awesome. I've watched it all the way through twice. I'm pretty sure I've seen U-571 but I know I've never seen Pleasantville. So I'd be happy with either.

Ahmad Copeland

Yeah, I'd agree. And I'd still consider it the best version overall. It's a miracle ANY cut managed to get to a finished state. For those who love the movie, or are fascinated by a train wreck, the CinemaTyler youtube channel has been doing an amazing deep dive series of videos for nearly 5 years on the making of the film (getting near the end, finally). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIGAcW86ZJ0&list=PLGciYgiR4atEUey1J37g4Bjy7rI2wzPi3

Guy Gordon

I knew you’d be excited once you saw Pleasantville mentioned in Cassie’s post.

Dan M

For a first watch, I always recommend the theatrical version.

Clay F

For me, Pleasantville is one of those movies that is enjoyable in the moment, but when you think about it for a minute it falls apart.

Mike Lemon

There were two British guys that presented an award at Poppies #2 if I remember correctly, that’s probably where she was going with that. I can’t remember their names but I watched them react to Firefly.

Cole Jennett

I did a slow double take on reading that. :)

Guy Gordon

The PBS American Experience documentary on the 1938 radio broadcast by Orson Wells (then age 23) is stunning. https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/worlds/

Clay F

Apocalypse Now is one of my all-time favorites, and it will be VERY interesting to see a Cassie reaction to that one. :) Wonder which cut it'll be. It's one I'm not picky about, as I enjoy all the cuts, but I'm hoping she does either the theatrical or final cut, as Redux is probably the one she'd have the toughest time with. Totally looking forward to this one.

Guy Gordon

The PBS American Experience documentary on the radio broadcast by Orson Wells (then age 23) is stunning. https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/worlds/

Clay F

I disagree about two of those three praises.

Mike Lemon

Maggie. Sloan is nice to look at. Mackenzie. Charlie and even Leona. Jeff Daniels nails Will. Wow.

Clay F

Several years AFTER the Brits captured several Enigma machines and three years after they began successfully decrypting the messages sent using the machines (there are several good books about the work performed at Bletchley Park). The capture of U-505 was virtually meaningless, other than as a trophy. Other than the fact that subs were involved, the movie and the real world event bear absolutely no resemblance.

Just Plain Bob

Pleasantville is a wonderful feel good movie that needs a bigger audience. Romance, fantasy, Jeff Daniels…

Jacob King

I love Pleasantville. Seeded with a new good morality (imo) that grows and blossoms. I also enjoyed the nuanced performance by Jeff Daniels.

Clay F

It’s loosely based on true events. The US did in fact capture a German sub, U-505, which carried an enigma machine on June 4, 1944.

Aaron Mann

I say Jim, but then I think, wait what about Sloane? Or Maggie? Or Neil? Not to mention Mac and Charlie, and obviously Will. Everyone is perfect in every role!

Cole Jennett

I picture thousands of Patrons re-enacting the scene in Ghostbusters when Louis (Rick Moranis) learns that Dana (Sigourney Weaver) has a date, and realizes he's not on it. Or, like Obi Wan, I sensed thousands of hearts breaking across the universe.

2-Can

U-571 by a mile. Lots of suspense. Loosely based on a true story. Historical drama. Just checks a ton of boxes for you.

Aaron Mann

I don't recall a British accent. (I can't think of such a British pairing, off-hand.) ("Are they bigger than a breadbox?" :-) )

Happy Hanukkah

Both U-571 and Pleasantville are very good, but in this case I think I'd go with U-571. I guess since you just recently watched Memphis Belle, why not another WW2 movie? It does seem a little fitting with one being set in the sky and the other in the sea.

Timothy Fisher

"Pleasantville" your kind of movie shouldn't be missed

R Harper

Looking forward to "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" and "Furiosa"

Joel Wayne

were they british?

Cassie

I am honestly shocked there isn't one single comment about this double date mentioned at the end.....lol. Pleasantly surprised.

Joel Wayne

Just watched the Redux on TCM a couple of days ago. Hadn't seen Apocalypse Now in ages and it wasn't as "messed up" as I remember growing up lol.

Joel Wayne

Cassie: When you're done with your current show, I highly recommend you give the new version of SHOGUN a go. It's complete now and you can watch it on Hulu. It's excellent, featuring first rate production values, great acting, and an engrossing story.

Matt Rose

Looking forward to X3, War of the Worlds, Last Action Hero and any unexpected more dramatic movie you might suddenly react to that I'm a fan of. Love surprises.

YodatheHobbit

Especially if she was there to read it to you in person, amiright? :-P

Happy Hanukkah

Not going to lie, I'd LOVE to see Cassie do some 30 for 30 reactions. I'd be more than happy to suggest my favorites for her.

Matthew Folz

With Apocalypse Now, I am predicting several moments of cringing groans, blankets over heads, and shouts of "OH MY GOSH!". Interesting pairing choice for the PPotM. U571 and Pleasantville are two very different movies. Excited for ST:TNG, X3, and War of the Worlds. Like many on here, I too am imterested to see Carly's reaction to WotW.

D. T. Nelson

So looking forward to more March madness movies, X3, Smoky and the Bandit, and more Star Trek! I can't get enough of the Trek!!

Mike LL

No I’m good. Money isn’t really the issue I just don’t really watch reaction videos anymore. It was a nice thought though.

Tim Raths

Wow. This is going to be quite a week. While I've always liked LAST STAND and never thought it was deserving of its abysmal reputation, I will admit that it is the first misstep in the X-MEN franchise. A big part of that is due to the fact that Bryan Singer, who directed the first two, did not return for this third one but instead opted to make SUPERMAN RETURNS, so they ended up with Brett Ratner who was one of the worst directors of major Hollywood motion pictures of the last 30 years. It's not terrible, but I predict that neither of you will like it as much as the first two. Definitely stay through the end credits. Steven Spielberg's WAR OF THE WORLDS is another movie that I always thought was undeserving of its reputation. I know that many do not love it, but I do (despite a few issues I have with it). Knowing that Carly is going to be joining you for that one, I'm very intrigued to see her reaction as it is going to be intense. But the film I am most interested to see your response to this week is Francis Ford Coppola's APOCALYPSE NOW which for my money is the greatest War film ever made partly because, like all truly great films, it transcends its subject matter to become universal in its scope. It is not just about the Vietnam war, it is about the darkness that lies in in the human soul (indeed it is adapted from an old novel entitled HEART OF DARKNESS) and while I have little doubt it will not be the most pleasant experience for you, it is essential viewing for anyone who takes cinema at all seriously. It is a work of art: beautiful and brutal, sublime and intense, profound and enigmatic. It is a masterpiece... and a word of advice, watch the original 2.5 hour long theatrical cut. Of the three extant versions (including the 2001 re-release APOCALYPSE NOW REDUX which adds an hour of footage and the recent so-called "final cut" which splits the difference), it is still the best. As for whether you watch U-571 or PLEASANTVILLE, I really don't care as I always found both films to be rather mediocre. I guess I liked U-571 a little bit more, but it's not a hill I'm willing to die on. Glad to hear that you are enjoying THE NEWSROOM. My wife and I do like Aaron Sorkin, so we watched it a few years ago and dug it (especially the first season; the second two weren't quite as good imo). Anyway, really looking forward to this week. As always, keep up the good work. :-)

Stick Figure Studios

Huge Chamberlain fan, when are we watching some Allen Quarterman....and the new Shogun....absolutely incredible

Chris Retzlaff

Movies With Mary started reacting to The Wire and she is on season 2. I would love for Cassie to watch this, as it's the best TV series ever. It would be hard hitting for Cassie, but also worth it!

Mike LL

I wish it was Milla. Charlton Griffin is good, but Milla would be so much better.

Mike Lemon

If you're taking patreon votes, definitely put me down for Pleasentville.

Matthew Folz

I’ve watched The Newsroom all the way through at least 4 times.

Daniel Turbyfill

I'll pay another month for you if you want.

Philip Alan

Since we're all here, maybe one of you fine folks can help me out. I'm trying to re-discover a reaction channel on YouTube. The videos feature two very average looking men, at least one of them with a beard. (The only further hint I can provide is that one of them claims his memory is so terrifically bad that he has no problems watching movies anew.) (No, it's not the Nice Dudes, nor pReview'd.)

Happy Hanukkah

Pleasantville

Korny

You're listening to The Divine Comedy? I love Milla Jovovich! :-P https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yr3iqz4miGk

Happy Hanukkah

X3 is not as good as the first two. I will likely skip the X3 reaction.

Clay F

Yep, I've rewatched, Hard to resist.

Clay F

Yup. Theatrical cut is still the best version. Final Cut ain't too bad, but they're both better than the REDUX which is a bit of a slog.

Stick Figure Studios

"Love your guts"? Don't think I have ever seen anyone sign off a letter with that valediction before. 😄 I kinda like it.

Brian McGovern

The original theatrical cut is still the best version.

Stick Figure Studios

It is one of the greatest documentaries on the making of a movie ever. I actually saw it before I saw APOCALYPSE NOW. Rest in peace, Eleanor Coppola.

Stick Figure Studios

Pleasantville -- please. The Newsroom TV Show is awesome. I was hooked after the first episode. For a first watch of Apocalypse Now, I recommend the theatrical version.

Clay F

Looks Cassie good, can't wait to watch these movies with you. I am back in the ER so I won't be joining you tonight. I hope you guys have fun! 😀

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

So glad you mentioned the radio broadcast by Orson Welles. Brilliantly conceived and executed. I have a copy on CD. It’s enormously entertaining.

Just Plain Bob

Junior almost steals the movie from Jackie Gleason who stole the movie

Bill Maurer

I also recommend The Making of Heaven's Gate and the Unmaking of a Studio (2004). Another brilliant retrospective documentary that is brutally honest about a volatile production and ended with the bankruptcy of United Artists. Apocalypse Now is briefly mentioned in the documentary by the UA executive that hoped that Heaven's Gate (1980) would turn out to be another masterpiece born from a troubled production. Unfortunately it was not to be. The documentary is also available in full on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnG-KZwrCxs

JONATHAN REDFERN WILLIAMS

I love the characters so much. Especially Jim

Cole Jennett

Great lineup, Cassie. I love Newsroom. Count me in the Pleasantville camp. U571 is a decent movie, but as others have said, highly fictional. Looking forward to War of the Worlds. If you haven't already, check out the history behind the 1938 radio broadcast.

Michael West

Even better Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds

LittleGalaxyBoy

The 2005 version of War of the worlds is quite something but. it goes without saying, the 1953 version is a must watch at some point, it includes the coolest alien ship designs ever put on film, real scu fu classic

Pat Cecil

Definitely Pleasantville.

Bill Hayden

TNG finale will blow your mind! It had the trek world on the edgo of their seats!

Pat Cecil

Ditto. Every so often I get a craving, and will watch a few episodes just to go back.

Larry Darrell

I consider “The Best of Both Worlds” to be the unofficial first TNG movie. In fact it got a theatrical release a few years ago which I saw. I can’t wait for your reaction video of it!

Cody Nelson

My excitement- the Atlanta Braves have the best record in baseball!!!! CHOP ON!!!! 🪓🪓🪓

William Bryan

I've read that they started filming the first season only a few days or a week after 9/11 happened, and that David Simon and his writers correctly predicted that the FBI would focus more on terrorism and less focused on the war on drugs.

JONATHAN REDFERN WILLIAMS

ooh fab! Looking forward to all the upcoming stuff :)

Pat Cecil

I 2nd, Hearts of Darkness (1991). One of the greatest documentaries about the making of a film.

Larry Darrell

Finally you’re seeing APOCALYPSE NOW (1979)! It’s one of my all time favorite movies. I sincerely hope you see the original theatrical version and not either of the more recent revisions (REDUX and FINAL CUT). The original version is still the best one.

Joe “Retroclassic” Pinney

I don't think X3 is as good as the first two. Wish you were watching the original War of the World's, but know you and Tom Cruise. Lol Just not a fan of Apocalypse Now. Some movies just don't interest me. Glad you are watching Smoky and the Bandit. Just silly, crazy fun. Don't take it seriously, just laugh at Jackie Gleason.

William Brownlee

So Cool to hear that you’ve been watching The Newsroom!! It would be interesting to here your thoughts on it sometime. I’d say go with Pleasantville. It may have more of a lasting impact on you. War of the Worlds… I’ve talked about having Cathartic experiences with films before. Well this one was a humdinger. The Family dynamics in the film was very, very similar to mine. Really looking forward to this one. I’m gonna try to pop into the Live, if there’s time. I just have to watch True Romance tonight. The anticipation has been too much. Smokey and the Bandit is the next film I’m so, so excited to see next. Just so you know… Down here in the South, we consider Smokey and the Bandit to be a Documentary. ;-)

Larry Darrell

David Simon knows his stuff. Only thing I didn't love about The Wire is how often the filming screwed up my lunch breaks! Great depiction of B'more in late 90s/early 00s

Mike H

I agree: Theatrical cut. Then, maybe Final Cut and/or Redux if interested.

Ron

I agree, although there are some who say The Sopranos is better

JONATHAN REDFERN WILLIAMS

Had a great weekend because my wife and I picked up our youngest daughter at Penn State to bring her home for the summer! Its great having her back home! I wish I knew more of the movies on the Foreign Movie polls to have a more informed vote. But I’m glad you included Gojira/Godzilla. Despite being a monster movie, Godzilla is more of an allegory for the trauma in Japan after WWII. Really looking forward to seeing what The Newsroom TV show is all about! Pleasantville or U-571 as your Popcorn Pick of the Month? How about both! A Double Kernel Pick of the Month! Just like they used to have double features in theaters back in the day.

Dan M

The best thing about The Newsroom, is that once it’s done, you will miss them so much you will want to start it over!

Cole Jennett

Best television show of all time IMO. By a mile.

fallingupdownthere

PLEASANTVILLE!!!!!!!!!!! I really hope you choose that one! One of my all time favorite movies. Also can't wait for Best Of Both Worlds. One of the best episodes of Star Trek and when you're counting 11 tv series that's really saying something. Also X-MEN! I've been in a X-Men mood since X-Men 97 came out so I'm here for it. War Of The Worlds is good but will probably unsettle you. Some of the scenes can stick with you. It all looks great and I can't wait. See you tonight!

Katie Jackson

I just finished the absolutely awful 2024 Shogun and to get that taste out of my mouth I finished up the audiobook again and watched the terrific 1980 Shogun. The 2024 is one of the worst adaptations I have ever seen, how it is being praised, I have no idea. Next up for reading (audiobook)- The Divine Comedy. Maybe forth time is the charm getting through Dante. When that gets a bit much onto Existentially Challenged by Yahtzee Croshaw for a break.

Mike Lemon

I loved Dave Roberts for that steal in Game Four. Hate him and the Dodgers now lol

William Bryan

To answer your question, I've been rewatching some of HBO's The Wire (2002-08), the show that launched the acting careers of Michael B Jordan and Idris Elba. It's a really brilliant drama set in Baltimore Maryland. YouTube reactor You, Me & The Movies have just recently finished reacting to all 60 episodes!

JONATHAN REDFERN WILLIAMS

So Awesome!!

Larry Darrell

Agree. Original first. Then if you love, love, love it watch Redux.

Chris Thom

Oh hell yes!!!!! After Houston eliminated Atlanta in the NLDS my attention turn to the ALCS. God those were some of the best games I've ever seen!!!!!

William Bryan

Some good stuff coming this week for sure. Looking forward mainly for WOTW and TNG.

Joe

Yep. When I saw it in the theater, I knew nothing of the actual history and just assumed it was an accurate depiction of real events. I felt like I’d been duped when I found out it was completely fictional.

Just Plain Bob

Dang this looks like a great week to have joined Patreon. Sick! (in a good way). I think you gotta do Pleasantville. It's such a classic with many you'll recognize. And you've done a lot of military lately.

Chris Thom

Get well soon 🤞❤️🙏

Neil Varma

Let's see a Four Days in October reaction!

fallingupdownthere

I love that you're watching Apocalypse Now, Cassie. I know this probably won't happen, but I'd also really hope you'd also react to it's acclaimed making of documentary, Hearts of Darkness: A Filmaker's Apocalypse (1991). It's one of the most brilliant, brutally honest retrospective making of movie documentaries ever, ever made! It's available to watch in full on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFYzVsrrPjE

JONATHAN REDFERN WILLIAMS

Looks like a great week!

Desmond King Descepticon

What a great week ahead, woohoo! Pleasantville is a nice little movie, it has my vote. The Newsroom is probably top 3 tv show of all time for me. Aaron Sorkin writing just dances and flows and I like the concept of it. Would have loved a watchalong for that, but I understand.

Pickupthepieces76

This is my last week as a Patron, it’s been nice chatting with you all.

Tim Raths

Besides Star Trek that is one SOLID week. Apocalypse Now another one crossed off the must watch list.

Shehab Dawoud

"Ortiz fights it off centerfield. Damon running to the plate, and he can keep on running to New York. Game six tomorrow night." -Joe Buck Cassie I know you don't follow baseball but look up the 2004 ALCS. You'll see why the Boston/Yankees cap exchange is significant in War of the Worlds, epecially since the movie came out the following summer.

William Bryan

'Smokey and The Bandit' AND 'Last Action Hero"?? Oh my days! Can't wait!

QuigonJim25

X3: The Last Stand is definitely one of the films of all time. Jokes aside I do like elements of the film it's just not on the same level as the Dark Phoenix Saga from the comics or the 90s Animated Series which to many is the definitive version of the storyline spread across 5 whole episodes. The Phoenix Saga was infinity War levels of story build up planning across a decades worth of X-Men comics so having it be the third film was... an interesting choice. Behinds the screens drama as well relating to Cyclopes actor. I hope you both enjoy it, mainstream viewers with no X-Men comic knowledge tend to enjoy this film more thanks to having no comparison or bias towards the comics. The film did pull from Gifted storyline as well and personally I think the whole film should've just focused on the gifted plotline and keep the whole Phoenix Saga for a future film. Cannot wait for more Star Trek episodes :D

LittleGalaxyBoy

Which version of Apocalypse Now are you planning to watch? I recommend sticking with the shortest, ~2.5 hour long theatrical cut (or maybe the ~3 hour long Final Cut, but not the ~3.5 hour long Redux Cut). Also, this was one of the most difficult movies ever shot, so the 'Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse' about the making of the movie is a highly recommended watch. Pleasantville would be a perfect Popcorn Pick movie. But you would also enjoy U571. Also, I'm super stoked for SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT coming up. Just one suggestion: don't think much about it, just sit back and enjoy the moustache. I mean movie. 😄

Gábor Árki

I'd definitely go Pleasantville over U-571, not just because I think you'll like it a lot more, but because U-571 is a pretty forgettable movie. Also, War of the Worlds was such a strange mix of good and bad. There are some absolutely incredible sequences in that movie, but a lot of boring melodrama mixed in as well. And I learned from watching it a bunch of times that as soon as Tim Robbins shows up, there's basically nothing interesting that happens for the rest of the movie. Not his fault though, just that his character's appearance signifies the end of the good scenes in the movie, and it's all downhill after that.

Stranger2Reality

heard really good things on LOVE LIES BLEEDING.

Matt Rose

Pleasantville is such an out of the box film, nothing like it. And you'll see two performers from Seabiscut...and oh so different from Seabiscut. It's a very interesting and entertaining film. It's also a Cassie and Carly film.

John Liebling

For sure do not do the Redux version. It's a death march. It's interesting to watch once but most of the added stuff deserved to be cut, in my opinion. I honestly think the Theatrical Cut is the best cut.

Matt Rose

Looking forward to Tales of the Empire on May 4th. Gonna have to miss tonight, I promised myself tonight I would watch Love Lies Bleeding, Kristen Stewart's new movie. Been rearranging some things. Making a sci-fi room and a Round-the-World room, which also means tearing up the rest of my house! LOL oh lord. Anyway, sorry you're under the weather again but the Kernel Queen always comes out on top!

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

I absolutely loved The Newsroom. Hope you love it too!!

Andrew Rose

Got to be plesantville

Seymor Butz

Be sure and at least check out the Fall Guy old TV show intro / song... it's fun. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dj9ev40C30M

Christopher Smith

Well there is one movie this week I’m excited to watch with you Cassie. I just saw war of the worlds for the first time a couple months ago and I liked it a lot. Not into marvel films or Star Trek so I’m happy to have something to watch this week. Just finished apples never fall on Hulu and it was pretty good. Now I need to find something new to watch. Hope everyone has a great week. Happy watching 🙂

brooke atkins

my main issue with the film, actually.

Matt Rose

oh, do PLEASANTVILLE. Really good movie with a lot to say. U-571 is pretty decent too but I'd honestly suggest doing DAS BOOT instead. The wife and I are seeing THE FALL GUY this weekend. Word is surprisingly good on it.

Matt Rose

Cassie, if/when you watch U-571, please bear in mind that it is completely fictional. Nothing depicted in the movie actually happened.

Just Plain Bob

Can you confirm if you're watching the original theatrical cut for Apocalypse Now? Definitely my recommendation for a first time viewer.
