FOREIGN MOVIE POLL 2 of 2

Thank you all so much for all your suggestions last week about options for a foreign movie poll! There was so many we are going to do TWO polls, then the top 2 of each to go on to a final champions poll! I think these are going to be fun!

go vote on the other poll here

Comments

Where’s “Society of the Snow”? Is a must

Marcelo

Couldn't disagree more that the 2011 version is better than the original.

Cade

Not by Fincher. The one from 2009 is the original (and much better) version in Swedish.

Cade

It's a goal of mine. 😁

Above Average Dave

lol You crack me up Dave

Rose

Yeah, that was my vote too. The last bit is so good.

David Blount

Too late to vote, but don't miss Cinema Paradiso. For cinema lovers.

Martie

If you ever get around to Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. exercise caution I love that movie but it can be very tough to watch I would say the darkest film Fincher has done.

Christopher

Should watch a director’s entire work

AC5555

its on the other poll! i voted for that one

Cassie

If Intouchables(2011) isn't on it, I'm not interested

Nick Parker

The original. And it did have sub titles, I meant non dubbed.

JackTupp

Cassie is Canadian/American, so the rest of the world's films would be foreign to her.

Richard Maurer

Hey Cassie, if you watch the movie "Das Boot", it's best to watch the director's cut from 1997. It's even more intense than the theatrical version

Daniel Fuchs

..at least 3 🙂

Björn Karlsson

What’s the classification of a foreign movie when PiB has a worldwide audience?

LDC7080

Das boot looks good. It was in Original German and English Dub when it came out. My parents had both versions.

Kyle Prince

....or a certain year from a certain country. Lets say (totally random) 1998 and Sweden 😅😉

Björn Karlsson

You saw the Fincher remake then went to the theater for the sequels? Or you saw the Swedish GWTDT?

Chris Thom

For a first time viewing of Cinema Paradiso, if you have a choice I recommend that you watch the shorter 124 minute version. This is the original international theatrical release which won at Cannes and the Academy Awards.

Richard Mouritzen

Ooooh, nice!

Philip Alan

So many jokes I could make here, but political comments aren't allowed.

Richard Maurer

What a tough choice! Back when Netflix was actually still good, I was introduced to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo... non subbed. I loved that movie so much I eventually went to an art house showing of The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest. Never done anything like that before or since. Das Boot, on the other hand, an old roommate basically said here, have you seen this, so I watched it. It was really dated but so gripping and compelling. I honestly couldn't believe I watched the whole thing.

JackTupp

Downfall is excellent.

Clay F

Haven't seen many foreign to be honest. Ashamed to say. Maybe 25-30 tops. Excluding English, Australian and some South African. Last real foreign thing I saw was My Brilliant Friend on HBO. Enjoyed that one quite a bit.

Chris Thom

2014 was a fine year, but saying " first" goes beyond that. I used to be quite the regular $hit poster on aintitcoolnews and it was de rigueur to have first "first" comments on a thread. Cassie herself has done it. And it's all good fun.

rakesh

Rose Knows™! 😁

Above Average Dave

Cinema Paradiso is wonderful. Have you seen the silent classic “The Passion of Joan of Arc”? If you have, then you’ve already seen a “landmark of cinema.” If not, then you’re in for a riveting cinematic experience. The full English version is uploaded on YT (see Public Domain Diary channel) with the Voices of Light score - Renée Jeanne “Maria” Falconetti gives a performance of a lifetime - arguably the greatest performance ever captured on film.

Rose

if there's enough buzz about CP - I would hope Cassie / Carly will watch it anyway and love every second of it. It's EXACTLY what they want out of a movie; romance, flashbacks, tender moments about a boy growing up and finding his first love....it won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 1990 for a reason!!!!

KJ

I don't want to take away from Downfall, this is a very good movie that Bruno Ganz who played Hitler should have a Academy Award for. I was blown away. I am very fluent in German so, I didn't even need subtitles. Just because one scene in the movie gets recreated over and over again all over YOUTUBE doesn't mean anything. It shouldn't take away from anyone's choice.

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

They are similar in that they are both submarine movies. That's it. Totally, completely different movies though.

Johnny

Haven't seen it. But I want to. Looks like classic Oscar Bait...and I kinda dig that.

Chris Thom

Saw some clips online. Looks great. Italian movies are great.

Chris Thom

Had never heard of Cinema Paradiso before, but just watched the trailer and it looks really good. Going to try to find that on a streamer. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo could be a fun...thriller reactions are some of the best on the channel in my reaction. But if you're going to watch that one I think it should be the Fincher version. It's the superior version in almost every way.

Chris Thom

I voted The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2009), Das Boot (1981), and Downfall (2004).

Clay F

dragon tattoo is excellent. Cassie said she very much liked the Starz Outlander TV series. ENews on Outlander: "the most graphic and disturbing rape scenes ever to air in the history of television."

Clay F

Was. He died in 2019. Great actor in a amazing performance

Bill Maurer

Yes

Bill Maurer

Downfall is an amazing movie. Bruno Ganz portrayal of Adolf Hitler was completely unexpected. Being able to convey that even the worst kind of person in the world has some semblance of humanity is powerful. Ganz should've been nominated for an Oscar that year. Kevin Bacon gave a similar performance that same year in The Woodsman.

Zane From Canada

Don't worry about it. I cancelled my membership two or so weeks ago. I feel PiB has gotten too big. I don't participate as much. It wasn't worth the expense. I can still enjoy Cassie on YouTube.

Jeffrey Schmidbauer

I think Kung Fu Hustle will fall into the same reaction category as Big Trouble in Little China. Just a guess.

Above Average Dave

To be serious (for a moment, anyway) - As a lifelong horror fan, holocaust films while important, are way more traumatizing than horror films.

Richard Maurer

Well, if we're going to do anime, I'd include "I Want to Eat Your Pancreas." Romantic, but sad.

Stephen Dias

Not horror It's history,it's about remembrance and it did happen,I've visited Amsterdam and the 'Anne Frank' house, that day had a huge affect on me..

Celeste McAllister

I've seen my share of foreign movies, but have only seen three of these. To be fair, I can't really count "Das Boot": it was a midnight showing and I fell asleep. It will be interesting to see which are chosen.

Stephen Dias

Well you, for one. but there must be other people.

Richard Maurer

In case my rant below has nothing to do with why you're cancelling (since you didn't say), please disregard. Why are people canceling in the foreign film polls? Did you honestly think the older classic ones would win? Older movies will never beat newer ones, maybe once in a great while, at best. Why do you think I'm always pushing for a classics only horror poll? Because they have no shot against newer horror films, in case you didn't know the answer. Before I even voted I knew the two leaders in this poll would be GWtDT and Das Boot. The fact that Gojira is in 2nd place in the other poll was pleasant surprise, but probably has more to do with name recognition for most people.

Richard Maurer

Throw in "The Seven Beauties".

KJ

Agreed - this is perfect for her and Carly to react to. Has all the elements they want; flashbacks, romanticism and young love.

KJ

And she didn't like it that much.

KJ

AGREED! This is has all the elements of a love story her and Carly want; flashbacks, romanticism and young love. They need to see this movie!

KJ

EXACTLY. Her and Carly would love it.

KJ

Hey-ho: c'est la vie!😬

Chris Clarke

I haven't watched the movie. Your opinion and feelings are irrelevant and not for debate when you post spoilers. You could have easily explained your displeasure without resorting to such tactics and your reaction to continue to provoke instead of doing what you should have done at the begining and edit your comment tells me all I need to know about you.

rakesh

Oh, das Boot, finally. Was wondering about that ever since your Hunt for Red October reaction. It's by far the best submarine movie ever made, and it shows a side of WW2 most americans never think about. So it has my vote!

Shanwyn Nightfox

You make 2014 sound so long ago. To me, it feels like yesterday. It's a matter of perspective.

Jeffrey Schmidbauer

No sign of the 3 I suggested.

Richard Maurer

And they say the horror fans are the ones who want to traumatize Cassie ;-)

Richard Maurer

Today is my last day here anyway. I cancelled my subscription to PiB.

Jeffrey Schmidbauer

Please remove spoiler. It’s one of Cassie’s top no-no’s.

Just Plain Bob

it might be worth noting, for those unaware, that Run Lola Run will be getting a re-release in theaters this summer with 4k restoration, since it's the 25th anniversary.

AzraRillian

This poll was basically designed to give GWtDT the win. It and Das Boot are the only two films in the poll most average movie fans have heard of.

Richard Maurer

Spoiling a movie is always wrong, no matter what your feelings about the movie being spoiled are.

Richard Maurer

Great idea, but unlikely to happen because YT exists.

Richard Maurer

Maybe "modern version" was incorrect to say. But is it not a similar movie? I haven't seen Das Boot and U-571 in a very long time, but when U-571 came out I know a lot of people were saying it's a "rip-off" of Das Boot since they tell a similar kind of story with similar plot points and some similar scene shots. I do remember people saying Das Boot was a more dramatic film but U-571 was more entertaining which is why they liked it better.

Alberto Gramatges

One day you'll actually be first and then the sky's the limit!

Richard Maurer

so youre one of the bros that want to bring garbage to this channel.

zynjams

Dragon Tatoo is a very difficult movie to watch.

David

Yeah i havent. TBH the only ones I voted for are the ones i've seen and really enjoyed which is run lola run and downfall

rakesh

Remove spoiler.

rakesh

No,No,No 😉

Eddie

It was very clever but your favorite? The Cape Fear episode will forever be at the top. Bake him away, toys!

Shehab Dawoud

100% agreed. THAT SCENE (we all know which one, well both of them with those characters really) is one where Cassie absolutely will not be able to watch it.

Stranger2Reality

It's great, but I actually prefer the sequel SANJURO.

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, TGWTDT is gonna be a tough sit.

Stick Figure Studios

Ganz is a treasure.

Stick Figure Studios

I'd say BICYCLE THIEVES myself, but there are a lot of truly excellent films in this poll.

Stick Figure Studios

Why is Girl with a Dragon Tattoo winning, another wasted poll.

Biggman83

It's the one movie on ther I haven't seen.

Stick Figure Studios

I'm gonna submit that nobody who has actually seen both movies argues that U-571 is better than DAS BOOT.

Stick Figure Studios

Well, she's already seen SEVEN SAMURAI.

Stick Figure Studios

These and so many more.

Stick Figure Studios

My guess is the majority of the patrons haven't seen it.

Stick Figure Studios

They're on there, but at the bottom of the pile.

Stick Figure Studios

It's German!

sarCC

Cinema Paradiso is right up your alley! It's a shame it doesn't get more votes

Lachrisho

Voted Rashomon, GWtDT, while good, is still somewhat overrated and is part of a trilogy anyway. And what's with the people saying to watch the Fincher version? You do understand this a FOREIGN movie poll, right? Same with Gojira (Japanese) vs Godzilla (American/Japanese).

Richard Maurer

Never thought I’d see the day when ‘Bicycle Thieves’ and ‘Yojimbo’ are on a poll. Great must see movies! Shame they’re not going to win.

Biggman83

House of Flying Daggers, The Raid...I wish.

Richard Maurer

A future Martial Arts poll would be great, but if Enter the Dragon is in it the poll is over before it begins.

Richard Maurer

How is Cinema Pardiso not polling higher? It's an absolute materpiece

Rich H

Had a friend that was into that movie. Is it Russian?

Chris Thom

Where is “The Worst Person in the World “?

Joe M

Three Colors is amazinf

AC5555

It’s a Cassie film.

AC5555

Ikiru/Living as a double feature pack 😂

AC5555

Every single one of these films needs to be seen. And many more.

AC5555

Too relatable for me. Being ultra romantic. Loving films. Leaving home and everything I’ve ever known to be a filmmaker.

AC5555

All of these need to be watched on her channel. Let’s be real. 😌

AC5555

That's the plan, 😏🤫

Moe howard

For a truly awful example of it, try the Warrior and the Sorceress with David Carradine, lol

John

I think Yojimbo could be a week of it and clones, the way the Sevens week was, since that plot has been used many different times. Have it, the first Leone spaghetti Western with Eastwood, A Fistful of Dollars, and Last Man Standing, the Bruce Willis gangster movie together.

John

Shall We Dansu? should be on this list as well. Beautiful film. Also, Pan’s Labyrinth.

Brian Lowery

I wish Like Water for Chocolate would have made this list. Great Mexican love story

zynjams

Brutal rape scenes is not my form of entertainment, dragon tattoo is horrendous

zynjams

Seconded about The Lives of Others.

Cinco DeNio

Agreed.

Stick Figure Studios

Me too. Maybe in a future martial arts poll?

Stick Figure Studios

The most iconic works in cinema getting the lowest votes is the standard operating procedure around here.

Stick Figure Studios

Bummed Your Name wasn't on this

Philip G.

Yeah, I agree with Stick Figure on this one. Maybe next time have it be Pre-2000 and post 2000 at least.

Damien beatty

I know romantic comment is your favorite and cinema Paradiso is so beautiful award-winning and a gorgeous musical score by Ennio Morricone. You’ve got to watch cinema Paradiso and you will cry …a lot

Galen Prenevost

https://youtu.be/K-UDABxrlEI?si=mR8WMF_SslOCHKiM

Lamar Smith

I saw a particularly funny news piece about a German-speaking Swiss boy who came to America for a year of foreign exchange. He wanted to go out for American football and Coach was going to have to cut him for his own safety. Until the young man came out and showed off his soccer prowess by kicking 50 yard field goals. Clearly Coach had a QUICK change of heart. So, he gets going and his teammates assign him the nickname ‘Das Boot.’ The confused Swiss boy went to Coach asking, “Why are they calling me ‘The Boat.’ Coach chuckled and set him straight.

Lamar Smith

Le Samourai and Run Lola Run are two of my favourite movies so it’s an easy vote. Dragon Tattoo is a rough watch.

Jacob King

Its wayyy too "rapey" for Cassie. I think the people that are voting for that are being cruel

Kuskesh Haramzadeh

I absolutely agree with you but ‘Das Boot’s’ dub is particularly abysmal.

Lamar Smith

That's a very solid list.

2-Can

With all the great classic foreign films in these two polls, I'm disappointed that the titles leading are a) the most recent and b) they darkest and/or scariest. Sigh. :-/

Stick Figure Studios

This poll is impossible to pick from, they are all so good.

Christopher B.

…oh and Alain Delon in Le Samurai is just the epitome of continental cool.

Ria Grix

@David Blount it always makes me so emotional!

Allison

Yep. Some veeeery good suggestions in here. Just the first four alone are absolute essential viewing.

Ria Grix

The original Swedish version of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is one of my all-time favorites. I love that movie. Das Boot would be great, too, but it's pretty darn long. One movie I'd love to see added is The Lives of Others. Freaking amazing movie. Also, Hara Kiri would be a great choice.

John Neiberger

Sad to see some of the most iconic and absolute legends of cinema getting such low votes. Bicycle Thieves is quite literally one of the most influential films in cinema history, I can’t count the amount of times movie directors and actors quote it as being one their favourites. Voted No.2 in BBC Culture's poll of 209 critics in 43 countries for the greatest foreign-language film of all time. Rashomon is the movie that really broke Japanese cinema into the west and consistently appears in all time greatest movie charts. Like Top 100 Essential Films of All Time by the National Society of Film Critics. Clint Eastwood probably owes Toshiro Mifune’s Yojimbo as the starting point for his entire career. Certainly every cowboy and San Francisco based cop he ever played was heavily influenced by Mifune.

Ria Grix

Truly one of the greatest films ever made.

Stick Figure Studios

Not me.

Stick Figure Studios

those are of course excellent akira Kurosawa films but id start you off with Ikiru.

ExploreWinnipeg

It won't win, unfortunately, but I voted for it. I think Cassie would love it.

Stick Figure Studios

but it's the feel good movie of the year!

Matt Rose

If you haven't seen Downfall. please watch this clip ( spoilers obviously) and change your vote. https://www.captiongenerator.com/v/2299719/vote-for-downfall-in-the-pib-foreign-movie-poll

rakesh

It’s great to see her starting to pay more attention to foreign films

AC5555

My opinion but it’s a film 101 movie and for good reason. I’ve seen it so many times now and there’s still nothing I can dislike about it. 🤷🏻‍♂️ It hurts me emotionally in general.

AC5555

We should push for it to win.

AC5555

Agree. And the last 20 minutes of the movie are soooooo good.

David Blount

The Kite Runner

James

Cinema Paradiso isn't going to win but I think you would love it. A lovely and touching movie about movies. And Rashomon is so important for its influence on so many other films that came after it.

Allison

I'm the other. :-) For those unfamiliar with it: It's a French comedy from 1973, starring the great actor Louis de Funes. It's a broad farce, very much of its time. Plot: a bigoted and irascible French bourgeois finds himself on the run and having to disguise himself as a Hassidic rabbi, together with an Arab revolutionary. Hilarity ensues.

Happy Hanukkah

Although it probably won’t win, I know you and Carly would love Cinema Paradiso.

Philip Herman

No body.

Johnny

LOL - No, It's not the modern version of Das Boot. It's not even remotely the same movie, and it is NO WAY better than Das Boot.

Johnny

I'm delighted to see one of my votes in the middle of the pack rather than near the bottom!

Bert Towle

People sleeping on Run Lola Run.

Farbod

I don't think one is clearly superior to the other, I think it's interesting to see the different choices each one made in adapting the book.

Patrick Egan

Too many good choices. I want to see Dragon Tattoo, but I know that it is going to be a tough watch for Cassie.

ArsTropica

RUN LOLA RUN!! Let's GOOOO! :)

Philip Alan

Also it's surely the only film that has a section on its Wikipedia page about how the wife of the film's publicity agent protested its release by hijacking a plane (!!!) and getting killed over it. Crazy stuff

Henry Graham

Rashomon, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Das Boot... decisions, decisions.

Bill Hayden

......and so many genres

Björn Karlsson

Who thinks U 571 is better than Das Boot?

Hiraoka Toru

One of the best movies of the amazing French comedian Louis de Funès.

Gábor Árki

Disappointed not to see Hero (2002) not on either poll

Sean Stuart

I'm the one who suggested Das Boot, but if that does get picked I wonder if Cassie should at some point down the road also watch U-571. Which is a more modern version of the same movie with differences. Some people argue it is better then than Das Boot.

Alberto Gramatges

Cassie should seriously consider starting a monthly foreign movie reaction. She could start with the top four in each of the two polls she’s currently running. There’s just far too many superb foreign films to only watch one or two a year.

Just Plain Bob

I feel the same way. The only thing that was an improvement, in my opinion, was the opening title sequence with Karen O's cover of "Immigrant Song."

sarCC

I'm just happy that a) there are foreign movie polls, and b) Cinema Paradiso is on one and getting some love, if not many votes.

Richard Mouritzen

Downfall all the Way. An excellent movie

Matt Atkinson

I watched this in a film class in college. No subtitles. It was the worst grade I got in the semester. It was excruciating to watch, lol. Though Rosemary's Baby was probably the most disturbing of all the films we watched.

Matt Rowland

Original language plus subtitles are always better.

Uncle Phoenix

I voted for The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob because.... what the heck even is that?!

Henry Graham

I was able to vote for “all that apply,” so I went with TGWTDT as well as Bicycle Thieves and Cinema Paradiso.

Marja

I prefer Cassie to watch the David Fincher version with Daniel Craig. She likes DC!!

BoyNamed_Sue

I’m peeved the Three Colors trilogy is not one of the options (having said that LOS DAS BOOT!!!)

Rosario Cicero

It won't win but you should totally see Bicycle Thieves. I watched that in a film class in college, and let me say, I want as many people to experience those 90 minutes of excruciating boredom as I had to sit through. It's a right of passage! LOL 🤣

Matt Rowland

Absolutely yes it would be,add 'Life is Beautiful' 'The Devil's Arithmetic' 'Conspiracy' 'The Grey Zone' 2001...

Celeste McAllister

100

Uncle Phoenix

David Fincher is so good.

Uncle Phoenix

I do it only to piss you off.

Jeffrey Schmidbauer

Had to vote for RASHOMON because it was my introduction to Japanese film.

Uncle Phoenix

The throwaway Rashomon joke on "The Simpsons" is possibly my favorite Simpsons moment.

Paul Stelter

Personally I think they're both trash, but at least Fincher knows what he's doing with a camera.

Henry Graham

I voted for the bicycle thieves, even though I know it will lose. It’s an excellent film however, at the risk of sounding critical Italian neo realism (which influenced generations of filmmakers around the world) begins with Rossellini‘s open city, which he began filming in the streets of Rome days after the German army had left the city. It is ultimately I think a more important film than a bicycle thieves.

Thomas Thompson

Why do you make this 2014 comment on almost every post? It was cringe-worthy then and has only gotten worse.

Mike Lemon

It's of course very good, but that's going to be a rough watch if it wins.

Paul Stelter

I don’t think I’d recommend The Girl With the Dragon tattoo to Cassie. That said, Swedish version is better. The extended version (40 mins longer) is even better. The pacing, story and the reveals are done better than the American ver. It’s also more graphic. Personally I love the Swedish version and thought the American version was a cash grab too afraid to tell such a brutal story.

John Rando

Cassie has already seen that one off-channel

Dave

While I would normally vote for the original Dragon Tattoo, Run Lola Run is one of my all-time favorite films. So inventive, smart, creative, funny, thrilling and romantic. It's definitely one I always look forward to showing someone who hasn't seen it. It's just amazing. I do hope you eventually watch it.

sarCC

Have to go with Das Boot, even though I'm highly claustrophobic. (And yes I saw it in a theater; it was almost as rough for me as for the people on screen...) The theatrical version is 150 minutes, but if you watch the Director's Cut (209 minutes) probably best to break it into two uploads.

Paul Stelter

Das Boot. In original German version please. English dubbed version loses very much feeling and emotion. Original German version has subtitles.

Eugene Hahn

"män som hatar kvinnor" or The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a great first movie in the millenium series you almost need to commit to all 6 movies to get the best experience IMO the Akira Kurosawa movies are masterpieces but you really need to get into a slow movies that teels a story vidually as much in the action about a time vhere Japan was very poor and famine ruled the lands

Ulf Jerlström

Well, at least it's not the Fincher one.

sarCC

No sign of the one I suggested...😞

Chris Clarke

You guys are so mean voting for the girl with the dragon tattoo.. Cassie DO NOT

Neil Varma

"On the day of the film's release, October 18, 1973, while Georges Cravenne, the film's publicity agent, was promoting the film, his second wife Danielle Cravenne [fr] hijacked an Air France B727 which was en route from Paris to Egypt.[6] Armed with a .22 long rifle and a fake pistol, she threatened to destroy the plane if the film was not banned. Cravenne declared herself to be a member of the solidarity movement for the French-Israeli-Arab reconciliation and considered the film's release unacceptable as it was being released during the Yom Kippur War.[7] Cravenne agreed to let the plane land in Marseille to refuel. French police disguised as maintenance workers boarded the plane and shot and killed her. Cravenne was 35 years old. The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob was still released." - I WANT TO WATCH THIS NOW!

rakesh

Would this be a good time to recommend, Sophie’s Choice (1982)?

Larry Darrell

Here. :D I was one of 2(?) who suggested it. I knew it doesn't have any chance, just wanted to give some recognition to the great Louis de Funès. His movies are huge around this part of the world, they are always on TV and almost everyone knows who he is.

Gábor Árki

Excellent, excellent suggestions. I haven't seen all of these but the ones that I have are all worthy. TOKYO STORY, in particular, is an absolute must see. I'd also suggest ANOTHER ROUND.

Matt Rose

Beyond embarrassing that The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is going to win this poll.

Henry Graham

Dearest Cassie, if ‘Das Boot’ wins, you don’t need the extended edition and they’ll offer you to watch it in VERY bad dubbed English. Skip that entirely. Do German with subtitles, you’ll be glad you did.

Lamar Smith

I rate them about the same. There are superior elements in each version of the film.

Matt Rose

Probably due to the American version, but Dragon Tattoo feels like the most American choice of the lot. It's a good movie, but hoping for another choice.

Pickupthepieces76

Too many good ones in both of these polls. I'm going to throw my weight behind BICYCLE THIEVES as a film that you absolutely must see.

Matt Rose

I'm pulling for 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' I can personally vouche for this movie..Can we get a HOLOCAUST POLL ? 'The Boy in the stripped pajamas' 'The Diary of Anne Frank'.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Celeste McAllister

My choice is Cinema Paradiso; among the leaders Das Boot. I wonder who saw Rabbi Jacob here (I did) :-)

René Ferland

Thanks Cassie, for including Le Samourai on this poll. It is not well known enough to win or get many views on YouTube, but its influence on modern action/crime films in many countries is unmistakable. After seeing it filmmaker John Woo dressed as the protagonist in Le Samourai for about a year, he thought him so authentic an anti-hero. Thanks again for a worthy attempt to include it. I hope just its inclusion on this poll will lead some potential fans to see it. 😊

Steve Holton

Downfall and Das Boot are both very excellent movies. Both horrifying for different reasons.

Laura Thornley

Did you mean Amelie? If so, she’s already reacted to it.

Justtired

Where is the love for CINEMA PARADISO???

_tragicmike

I have a suggestion for a foreign film to check out. Pan’s Labyrinth. Imo, Guillermo del Toro’s best work. Highly recommend it.

Movieguru88

For future polls I’d add Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) 🇫🇷, Let the Right One In (2008) 🇸🇪, The Worst Person in the World (2021) 🇳🇴, Tokyo Story 🇯🇵, The Hunt 🇩🇰, The Cranes are Flying (1957) 🇷🇺, Come and See (1985) 🇷🇺, Rohmer’s Tale of Four Seasons, Boyfriends and Girlfriends, and Green Ray 🇫🇷 , Shoplifters, Like Father Like Son or Nobody Knows 🇯🇵 , The Virgin Spring , Autumn Sonata, Scenes from a Marriage, The Seventh Seal 🇸🇪 , Broken Embraces (2009) 🇪🇸, Close (2022), Mustang (2015) 🇹🇷, El Sur (1993) 🇪🇸, Kisses (2008) 🇮🇪, Quiet Girl (2022) 🇮🇪, Where is the Friend’s House (1987) 🇮🇷, 400 Blows (1959) 🇫🇷 , High Hopes & Life is Sweet 🇬🇧, Memories of Murder 🇰🇷, Cleo from 5 to 7 🇫🇷, War and Peace 🇷🇺

AC5555

Das Boot is the best movie on that list.

Johnny

I’m going with one of the Akira Kurosawa films! Love them both but picking Rashomon! All the choices are great!

Mark Ultimatemusings

"Downfall" has probably one of the best acting performances I have ever seen in any movie. Bruno Ganz's performance as the World's worst human being is mesmerizing. Great, great acting

Bill Maurer

It didn't refresh fast enough.

Jeffrey Schmidbauer

Amile, Infernal Affairs 2, Elite Squad, House of Flying Daggers, The Raid...

pinkdino99

Das Boot is a timeless classic, a real gem, Very fine, powerful work

Pat Cecil

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. "I forgot to ask you, you like **** ***?" 🤣🤣🤣

William Bryan

I love this idea! Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is up there as a fun movie too, one day!

JennP

Still early but Rashomon doing so poorly is very disappointing. Maybe most people here haven’t seen or heard of it but its influence on cinema can’t be understated.

Shehab Dawoud

Au contraire mon frere

rakesh

Fincher's remake of Dragon Tattoo is better

Odd Thomas

The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo would be a popular one on Youtube i would imagine.

Adam Doyle

Downfall was such a good film, but I think Rashomon has such a lasting imprint on the films we watch today, which I wont say for potential spoilers.

Blake Evans

Cinema Paradiso is one of my favorite films of all time. I cry at the end. Every. Time.

Above Average Dave

Dragon Tattoo no contest

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

I think Cassie is going to be squirming all over the place during Girl With the Dragon Tattoo if that wins. Run Lola Run is a lot of fun, but I also think Downfall is a very good, very important movie.

Stranger2Reality

Downfall wasn't that Hitler movie were everyone and their mother recreated it? Like Ohio State not beating Michigan or Kansas losing to UNI just to name 2 of like hundreds.

Nothing a particularly wish to vote for on 2 of 2, so instead a "write in": Patrik, Age 1.5 (2008) Swedish with subtitles, 72% on Rotten Tomatoes

Yojimbo is one of my favorite films

Oh man, I want to vote for “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” because it’s such a great movie, but I’m genuinely concerned that some scenes are gonna be too much for you.

I saw all the Swedish originals first, and IMO it's one of the rare instances where the English remake was far superior, but that's largely because David Fincher is such a fantastic director.

Cassie, please watch Cinema Paradiso regardless of what happens in this poll. It’s Entirely up your alley. It’s a love letter to romantic love, cinema and Italy. It’s influenced me and made me feel better after moving away from home to study film and become a filmmaker. The score is by ennio Morricone. Aside from that, nothing else much to say. Great choices here. Bicycle Thieves is perfect too. As are Yojimbo, Das Boot and Rashomon.

The girl with the dragon tattoo is one of those rare exceptions where the American remake is far far superior

Thomas Thompson

Das Boot should really be watched as the series - the film leaves too much out
