True Romance (1993) - Full Reaction

I definitely saw the Quentin Tarantino influence in this movie! It was BRUTAL but Patricia Arquette was incredible. She was so likeable, maybe the only truly likeable character in the whole movie? I think they really did love each other! crazies!

Sorry I saw this way to late. I am deleting I think 75-80% of my posts on here anything that's not postive. After almost getting admitted to the hospital today. It's time to do some housecleaning.

Thanks Joe. I was wanting to say this, but couldn’t find the time to do it right. Tarantino did approve of the final film of True Romance and was proud of it. He agreed the happy ending worked for the film that Scott made.

Fun little Quentin Tarantino character crossover theory. Producer Lee Donowitz in this movie could be the son or grandson of Donny Donowitz aka "The Bear Jew" from Inglorious Basterds. 😁

I prefer Natural Born Killers. True Romance feels like Tarantino doing a practice run for NBK.

i absolutely love this movie. enjoyed your reaction. didnt know if you were gonna make it through this, until it occurred to me you had already seen Kill Bill. lol. I am one that will still say go watch Reservoir Dogs. Its worth it. At least you can chalk up another to the Tarantino list. Thnx Cassie!

Sepeh, good comment. She didn't recognize. Like you indicate, shows how good Gary Oldman transfored into the character.

I was waiting to see if Cassie would recognize him... It seemed like she didn't, which I guess is a testament to just how much of a chameleon Gary Oldman is. Cracking performance.

You can see in Hopper's eyes the moment he realizes he isn't getting out of this alive... As he won't give up his son. One of my favourite movie scenes of all time...

Not true. The film that you're speaking of is "Natural Born Killers" which was directed by Oliver Stone and originally written by Tarantino. Stone literally rewrote the film and changed it into something else that didn't resemble Tarantino's original script. QT has publicly criticized it and has not seen it to this day.
"True Romance", however, has been seen by QT and has embraced it. He said Tony Scott did a good job of not changing the characters or their dialogue. The film stayed true to QT's original script for the most part even though the ending wasn't what QT had in mind. Overall, he was happy with what Tony Scott has done with it!!!

No... it was suicide. He knew he would break, and that he did not want to break. So his insult was his 100% guarantee to get a bullet in the head. The irony that the address is on the fridge...

Well, if anything, Tarantino actually didn't like the outcome, a lot was changed from his original screenplay, he had nothing more to do with this film after the script was sold, he never liked how this movie turned out. He often said he wished he would've directed this movie.

IMO, Clarence was a lonely guy, who daydreamed a lot. He had ideas about who he wanted to be and who he could be, but never had the courage to do anything himself. He kept his spirits up by talking to his own personal cheerleader in his mind, in the form of Elvis.
Then Clarence meets Alabama and she says She loves him and they’re married all in less than 24 hours, I believe.
Clarence gets caught up in this whirlwind romance, and realizes that he isn’t alone anymore. He’s got to be somebody now, for Alabama. He wants to be strong. He wants to be courageous. He wants to be the biggest and best guy in her life. He needs to prove this to Alabama, and Drexl was his opportunity.
Clarence didn’t even know who Clarence actually was or what he was capable of, until he was tested. When he went to Drexl’s, he was scared out of his mind, but knowing he had Alabama now, it gave him courage.
Admittedly, he got that “Stupid” kind of courage that allows you to do something, totally irrational. But it was courage nonetheless, and something he never had until Alabama came into his life.
He barely made it out of Drexl’s house alive and when he came back to his house to see Alabama, he was visibly all over the place. He was rambling and confrontational. He was losing it.
Then Alabama said that what he did was “so romantic,” and kissed him and climbed into his lap. That right there centered him on “Who” he was going to be, from now on.
The rest was history… and, on film, it was Awesome.
Realistically though, I think it’s better to figure out who yourself is, Before, you get serious with or marry a girl. Don’t let a woman (or man) change you.
Unless it’s for the better, of course.
Just Don’t Lose YOU in the Process.

This is a great scene. Hopper knew he was a dead man, so he figured might as well get in one last jab at Walken's heritage.

Yeah the whole thing about killing Drexel just didn't seem to fit Clarence's personality. A comic book nerd who loves kung fu movies and Elvis. And now suddenly he's a cold blooded killer because he met a girl? But yeah aside from that, awesome movie.

Cool Note: In 2015, at The Theatre at the Ace Hotel in Los Angeles, Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette returned to be a part of a Live Stage Script Reading of True Romance.
Other actors were brought in to fill the other roles.
Jon Favreau as Gandolfini’s Virgil,
Keegan-Michael Key as Drexl,
J.K. Simmons as Hopper’s Cliff,
Kevin Pollak as Walken’s Vincenzo,
Jason Siegel as Floyd,
Mae Whitman as Dick,
and The League stars,
Paul Scheer, Jay and Mark Duplass as Elliott, Nicholson and Dimes respectively.
This would have been cool to see.

Favorite scene for me, and would never be done now-a-days, the one where Christopher Walken is questioning Dennis Hopper. Such awesome acting. Oh, and fun fact, in the final scene of the movie the son of Alabama and Clarence is played by Patricia Arquette’s real son Enzo.

Well this movie sure was something lol! That's Quentin Tarantino for ya, for a guy with aspergers like me, he sure knows what he wants in his movies whether he directs or writes it lol! My thoughts, it had everything I expected, I'm honestly speechless! Honestly my favorite scene was the interrogation scene between Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken, that scene was beautifully shot and well acted by those two, even though I knew Hopper's character wasn't going to make it out alive! One thing this movie had going for me was the cast, terrific cast of actors, huge fan of many of them! I knew you probably wouldn't like this movie much despite it had a happy ending which is what you're into lol! I myself wouldn't put this in my top favorites or top favorite Tarantino movies, but I'd watch it again if I wanted too! I gotta say though, Patricia Arquette, gosh she was gorgeous! I honestly know her more for her first debut role as Kristen Parker in A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3: THE DREAM WARRIORS, one of the better sequels lol! I'm not the biggest fan of Tarantino, there's only a handful of his movies I actually like, that being: KILL BILL VOL. 1 & 2, INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, and DJANGO UNCHAINED, those are awesome! Anyway, still enjoyed your reaction to this movie! I so hope your PPOTM of May will be U-571 lol, looking forward for your LAST ACTION HERO reaction, that's gonna be so fun! Glad you liked my comment on MEMPHIS BELLE! Hope you have a good week, love and support, you (and Carly) are the best, and God bless you & the family🥰😇🤗😁😉👍✌🌹

When I joined this Channel… my first Top 5 films that I came up with to recommend included True Romance. After getting to know you better, Cassie, I later re-watched True Romance through a mental Cassie filter and realized there were some things that might not go over so well. So I decided to not push hard for True Romance, but still hoping that you would see it someday.
Well, that was today, and it was just what I expected… and it was Awesome! Thank You. It’s definitely not a favorite of yours, and that’s OK. From what I’ve heard you say in the outro, and the Live tonight, I think you appreciated the film and the rewards gained from it…
Father Worley’s Bravery…
Alabama’s Fierceness and Strength…
Dick Richie’s Goodness…
Floyd.
And I have to mention the Sicilian scene. I am in the belief that this scene is one of the greatest ever filmed. I know the language made you uncomfortable, but just know that that language had a purpose. It wasn’t there to offend the viewer. The language was meant to offend the Sicilian killers.
Every racial slur was a metaphorical stab to the Sicilian’s Heart and Pride. This was a good thing. Seeing a man who is tied up and about to be killed, get a One Up on his Killer and strike a blow that will last long after he dies… and he does this with just words. Such a smartly written, directed and acted scene. Hopper and Walken were Magnificent.
Christopher Walken was only in this scene, and yet he’s one of the most memorable things about the film.
You should go back and watch it sometime, now that you know what to expect.
Other Film Titles mentioned in True Romance, which should be remembered.
(excluding Apocalypse Now and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly)
Fear and Desire (1952)
Jailhouse Rock (1957)
Rio Bravo (1959)
Doctor Zhivago (1965)
Bullitt (1968)
The Deer Hunter (1978)
Mad Max (1979)
Lastly… To save time I’ll only mention one of the films being watched on TV, within the film…
Freejack (1992), starring Emilio Estevez, Rene Russo, Anthony Hopkins and Mick Jagger.
I always liked this one as a kid, but haven’t seen it in years. It’s a fun Action/SciFi movie with a great cast.

Floyd knows he’s smart and he always wants to help, but no one trusts him. Dick is always yelling at him, telling him to get out of the fridge, get a job. Dick yanks the phone away from Floyd and he’s verbally frustrated because he was just trying to help.
As they’re leaving he tells Dick to get some beer… and some cleaning products. I’m sure he intends to clean the house up.
My favorite line of Floyd’s is after he knowingly told Gandolfini what motel Clarence was staying at, but Gandolfini wasn’t trusting him, Floyd says, after he leaves, almost under his breath, “…Condescend me, man… I’ll F******* kill you, man.”

Christian Slater, Gary Oldman and the actor who played the Hollywood producer who was buying his coke at the hotel towards end of the movie also all co-starred together again in The Contender. Jeff Bridges plays the President and Sam Eliot (Virgil from Tombstone) plays his Chief of Staff. Not saying it's a better movie but I wager that would be a much more pleasant viewing experience. Joan Allen is the real star in it. You'd probably know her best as the wife from Hachi and the CIA agent Pam Landry from the Jason Bourne trilogy.

The music that plays over the opening credits is derived from a piece by Carl Orff, which was used in Terrence Malick's 1973 film Badlands, a clear influence on True Romance. Badlands is one of the great American films and one you might like.

GARY OLDMAN is the creepy pimp DREXL (killed by Clarence relatively early in the movie). As most do, I despise the character Drexl. Yet, I like how well Drexl was portrayed by Gary Oldman. Stunning.
As you may know, Gary Oldman is:
--Dracula in BS Dracula (1992) (you reacted to)
--Jim Gordon (the good guy in the police dept) in the Dark Knight trilogy
--Churchill in "Darkest Hour" (2017)
--Puritan minister Arthur (fathered illegitimate child) in "The Scarlet Letter" (1995)

When drugs leave the source that they were produced they are 100% pure. For every single transaction where the drugs change hands they become less pure as the seller will add impurities to the drugs to increase their yield to the point where it hits the streets and it is less than 10% pure. The thing to remember about these movies is that they are fantasy. Once that truth is accepted you can enjoy the performances.

If you can, I recommend watching that scene again. Its on youtube so you should be able to find it pretty easily. Both Walken and Hopper signed on to the movie specifically to do THAT SCENE. Indeed, a lot of heavy hitters in Hollywood wanted to do the film just for that scene. Scenes like that don't come along very often. In addition to the quality of the writing, look at the direction of the scene...the blocking, the shot selection, and the use of music. People give a lot of credit to QT for the script but honestly, director Tony Scott directed the heck out of it. There are so many subtleties in play throughout. Add in the perfect performances from Walken and Hopper (line delivery, body language, everything) and you really have an all timer. You can also see the genesis of the opening scene in INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS with how this scene is written and constructed.
Anyways, great reaction, Cassie. I know you didn't love it but I think you'll dwell on it for a while. Rewatch it in a few years and think it will click for you. Cheers!

I did something with this reaction I don't usually do: I watched the intro and then jumped forward to the outro to see what you thought and your response is about what I expected. *SPOILERS FOR THOSE YET TO SEE IT* It was kind of cute to see you trying so hard to highlight the good elements in a movie that you otherwise clearly did not enjoy. You're a very sensitive and diplomatic individual. I, fortunately, do not have to be, so I can be more blunt and say I'm not as enamored of this film as many are and am in no hurry to watch it again (maybe I'll check out the YT edit when it comes out). It is certainly stylish (Tony Scott is a better director than Tarantino) with a terrific cast, fine performances and the typical smart, memorable pop-culture-infused dialogue Tarantino writes (and yes, the Sicilian speech is a highlight), but I've always found the whole thing overall to be a bit too ugly (particularly the James Gandolfini/Patricia Arquette fight scene) and cynical (although Tarantino has said that his original script would have been even more cynical as he planned to kill off the Christian Slater character, but Scott didn't want to). I'm not squeamish when it comes to movie violence, but this one went a bit too far for me as much of it felt gratuitous and there seems to be an underlying misogyny to a lot of it (it's basically a nerdy white straight virgin adolescent male fantasy come to life) and while I admit it is entertaining (I was, after all, once a nerdy white straight adolescent male virgin too... who even worked in a video store -- like Tarantino -- had/have an extensive knowledge of cinema), I don't believe it merits all the attention it receives. I definitely would not have recommended it to you, but it is part of the "filmbro canon" and as such is going to get foisted on reactors for some time to come.

Val’s credited as, from memory, ‘The Oracle’ or some such. He plays ‘Clarence’s’ ‘Elvis’ vision.
Gary Oldman was ‘Drexl.’

You can see in Dennis Hopper’s performance that he understands the position he’s in, the sorts of people he’s dealing with and the conscious decision he makes to take himself out of the equation.

Dearest Cassie, you didn’t mention it and most people, by far, don’t spot him: Did you ever see Val Kilmer?

Cassie: when you talk about 'what you liked', you left out Clifford Worley (Dennis Hopper). I respectfully submit that you should reconsider that character.
Spoilers ahead if you have not seen the film: Of any character in the film, he's probably the purest in terms of being a hero. He comes through for Clarence in multiple ways in his limited amount of screentime, but especially in his scene with Walken. Obviously the language that he uses is horrible, but he also has to say something that would be absolutely unendurable for Vincent Carcotti/The Antichrist (Christopher Walken) to tolerate. Better to have a quick death and reveal nothing than to sit there and be tortured and possibly reveal the desired information.

FYI it looks like Cassie watched this on Amazon. I synced up my 4K copy of the Director's cut, and it synced up just fine for the full runtime

I buzzed ahead to the Walken/Hopper scene.
Spoilers ahead if you have not seen the film: You asked 'why doesn't he just lie?' right before Hopper begins his 'history of Sicily' monologue. The whole point of the scene is that Walken knows how to tell if people are lying (he learned how from his grandfather). When Hopper realizes that there's no bluffing his way out of this, he knows that the only thing to do is to insult Walken so egregiously that he'll be forced to kill him on the spot.

A couple of things:
1. This is my favorite Brad Pitt performance. I have so much appreciation for the wild shit young actors do before they’re famous, when they’re hungry and have something to prove. And Floyd is great, because on the page, he’s nothing, he’s the stoner roommate, but Brad looked at that page and said, “I know this guy. I had a roommate like this guy, or my friend had a roommate like this guy, or I worked with a guy like this at a coffee shop on Venice Blvd,” and he took that knowledge and made a person out of it. I mean, he still does that now, but how many normal dudes do you think Brad Pitt runs into in his daily life now? I think that’s why so many movie stars are at their best before they get big, they’re still connected to the real world.
2. That scene with Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken about the history of Sicily is widely regarded as one of the best written, best acted scenes in movie history. I don’t know if I agree with that, but it definitely has the ingredients.

I’ve never seen this movie, but I’m looking forward to experiencing it for the first time with you. I’ve heard a lot about it, mostly good, and your Patrons really seem to like it.
I’ve always liked Christian Slater as an actor. There’s something about the way he speaks that I always found interesting. He reminds me of a young Jack Nicholson. And Christopher Walken and Gary Oldman make any movie they’re in so much better. But, being a Quentin Tarantino movie, I’m sure there will be a fair share of eyebrow raising moments.

Tarentino, before making movies worked in a Video store. I like to think Tarentino was making a film about one of the day-dreams he might have had at the counter, where he lives a life of intrigue and danger, and gets the girl in the end.

"He creeps me out so much." Shows how good and versatile of an actor that Gary Oldman is. I developed a crush on Patricia Arquette 30 years ago when I first watched this movie. She is incredible as an actor in the miniseries "Escape at Dannemora" (2018). When I was young, I liked how aggressive Clarence was in the beginning in going to see the pimp, but now I am with you -- Clarence should have just walked away like Alabama did.
Dennis Hopper who played Clarence's dad (Clifford Worley) is in Apocalypse Now (1979). (By the way, Clarence indicated that Apocalypse Now is his favorite Vietnam War movie.)
Alabama: "You're going to be on TJ Hooker?"
Clarence: "You get to meet Captain Kirk?
William Shatner (Captain Kirk) was police sergeant T.J. Hooker in the "T.J. Hooker" TV series (1982-1986).
Drugs are not your world, as you say. Just seeing it makes your legs go numb.
Typically, cocaine is diluted ("cut") with an adulterant to stretch the amount of product to increase profits for dealers. "Uncut" means that the cocaine is pure, not diluted (not cut), and thus less amount is required for a user for a given high.
"Don't drive away like that. Be calm."
A happy ending (even w/all the death I guess). They in love with a beautiful kid (and the money). I read there was debate among Tarantino and others regarding the fairy tale ending, which I liked the ending -- better than the original Tarantino ending that had Clarence dying and Alabama leaving alone with the money.

Also you may not remember this Cassie but Christian Slater was the young ensign that woke up captain sulu in undiscovered country. He was in a bit of slump but came back recently in the superb TV program Mr Robot.

I figured this would be your favorite Tarantino movie - especially after you hated on Pulp Fiction lol. However I was surprised that you warmed up to Kill Bill as much as you did. I gotta say though: the one movie you should totally avoid is Reservoir Dogs. There's nothing about that movie you would remotely like. If you think there's too much needless violence in the movies you've already seen, Reservoir Dogs makes the other movies look like a Disney Movie
