Memphis Belle (1990) - Full Reaction
Added 2024-04-29 05:50:05 +0000 UTC
I can't help but compare this to Band of Brothers and Masters of the Air. It's not really fair, though, since those were mini-series with so much more time to develop the characters and their stories. But I still enjoyed getting to know the crew of the Memphis Belle and seeing them overcome challenges and support each other. And that landing had me STRESSED! I was on the edge of my seat for the whole last 30 minutes... Hope you enjoy!
Sorry I'm a little late this week! We had some family come into town which slowed things down a bit. True Romance will probably be up by tomorrow morning!

Further, from her "Patreon FAQs/Start Here" above:
WHY ARE THE MOVIES BLURRED?
One of the biggest questions I get is about the movie being blurred during the full-length reactions. The reason the movie needs to be blurred is due to copyright issues. As much as I would like to, I can’t show the full movie, just the reaction. So like it says before you join, it is meant as a “watch along” and you will have to sync your own copy along with my reaction.

Just for context, the poem Danny reads is "An Irish Airman Forsees His Death" written by W.B. Yeats about aerial fighting in the First World War where air combat was in it's terrible and bloody infancy (it's often forgotten that in percentage terms the attrition for aircrew in WW2 was less than that in WW1 where life expectancy was often measured in hours).
Along with "High Flight" by John Gillespie Magee Jr. (A Canadian pilot of the Second World War) it is one of "those" verses aircrew even to this day know.
In my opinion there's never been a truly "great" air warfare picture, they all have flaws, but Memphis Belle cracks along at a decent pace and maintains tension well.
If you want a portrait of the WW1 experience I can very much recommend "Aces High", "The Blue Max" and "Dawn Patrol". Again, all have flaws, but they all give a feel of what it must've been like.

I understand your nervousness when flying and landing. You are probably smarter than most. As the wizard said to the cowardly lion, your confusing courage with wisdom. It's healthy to be nervous. Years ago I was flying out of Dallas to Minneapolis on a DC-9 (2 engines side by side on the tail). I was sitting in the rear of the plane when about 40 minutes into the flight everything went silent on one side of the plane. We'd lost one engine and had one left. They routed us back into Dallas and cleared all traffic in front of us. Within 15 minutes we were on final approach. We could see the fire trucks, ambulances, and foam trucks lining the runway as we came in. Just like the movie I watched the ground and the instant I saw the runway pavement under us the wheels touched down. I don't know who the young woman was sitting next to me but we held hands all the way down until we were on the ground. My brother was a DC-8 and 747 Captain and he has stories. More goes on than the general public would like to know.

I've seen where fighter pilots have said that the movie with the most realistic depiction of Dog Fighting was The Battle of Britain from 1969.

I’ve seen Fire in the Sky, Dan - I kind of had a crush on DB back in the 90s so I’ve watched most of his movies 🤭 some of the images in that one are still pretty vivid … ick. I also enjoyed his performance in Eight Men Out - another notable role as Shoeless Joe Jackson.

Cassie, in addition to "Titanic", you will also remember Billy Zane as the gentle hearted male stage performer Mr. Fabian in "Tombstone". He arrived in Tombstone with Josephine on the stagecoach with the theatre troupe in the scene when Josephine is introduced and first sees Wyatt Earp. The troupe then performed that night in front of a rowdy crowd. Mr. Fabian of course was eventually murdered by the Cowboys gang.
I checked through the comments, and noted this in a reply to the comment where I saw Billy Zane mentioned, but nobody else pointed this out so I thought I would post a comment about it too.

It’s been a long while since I watched this film. I know I’ve always loved it. Great Cast. Great Story. I even got to see the real Memphis Belle a few times as a kid on field trips, after seeing the film. That’s a very memorable part of my early years.
I think I’m gonna have to wait till tomorrow night however. Tonight’s gonna be True Romance.
In the meantime… if there has ever been a more Perfect Time to watch an episode of the 80s TV series, Amazing Stories, it would be now.
Amazing Stories, Season 1 Episode 5…
The Mission
A story about the men in a B-17 Bomber during WWII. (Masters of the Air, Memphis Belle)
Starring…
Kevin Costner (Tin Cup)
Kiefer Sutherland (Doc in Young Guns)
Casey Siemaszko (Charley in Young Guns)
Episode written and directed by…
Steven Spielberg (Lincoln)
The episode is 50 minutes long.
Even if you don’t React to it, it’s still worth watching.
Thanks again Cass for what you do. This year’s films, really have been a tour through my childhood.

This was probably one of the last times a number of b17s were able to be in the same place. Only a handful are still even flightworthy. Was the downside of MoTA the cgi was a necessary evil. This one and 12 o'clock high is probably the two top bomber related movies. Gregory Peck was spectacular in 12 O'clock. Worth working into your rotation down the road.

8th Air Force Museum is in Savannah, if you ever get back to the South, Cassie. Also, the WWII museum in New Orleans is spectacular with two large buildings, one with actual airplanes, including a B-17 and P-51 Mustang suspended from the ceiling in the Freedom Pavilion. There are also landing craft, tanks and life-sized dioramas where you get the feeling of what it was like in certain areas. Perhaps most interesting, they have recordings of oral histories from men and women involved in the war throughout the museum. I'd also probably get kicked out of North Carolina if I didn't mention that the Special Forces and Airborne Museum (with tributes to your friends from the 506th in Band of Brothers, and the Rangers and Delta units that participated in the Somalia battle from Blackhawk Down) is in Fayetteville, and well worth the trip! Again, spectacular - as you walk into the exhibits, you are transported into nighttime in a French village in Normandy complete with the sounds of machine gun fire and German 88s going off in the distance — just like a paratrooper on D-Day.

I saw a clip of an interview with Eric Stolz where he explained that (at least) part of the reason he was replaced is because he told the crew that he saw the movie as a tragedy - b/c Marty returns to a future in which all of his experiences and social interactions never happened. That was apparently the wrong answer.

2024-04-29 12:43:41 +0000 UTC
A few connection to the "Back to the Future" in this movie:
* As others have said Eric Stoltz was the original "Marty McFly" because Michael J. Fox was the original choice but initially unavailable, and then as it wasn't working out with Eric, he did get replaced by Michael J. Fox midway through production, even with his "Family Ties" commitments... he worked crazy hours.
* BIlly Zane (from "Titanic" as others have said), was also a member of "Biff Tannen's" gang for all 3 "Back To The Future" movies.
* Courtney Gains, the red-headed waist gunner with the medal was in the Tom Hanks movie "The 'Burbs" that was reacted to last October. He played the weirdo neighbour's son. He was also in "Back to the Future" as the guy that cuts in on "Marty's" parents when they are dancing but prior to kissing, while "Marty" is playing in the band.
On a different note, David Strathairn was also the blind hacker in "Sneakers' named 'Whistler", I was hping that it may get mentioned, but "Lincoln" was more recent. And, others have mentioned a bunch out of John LIthgow's filmography, but the one that has a reaction that I don't think has been mentioned is "Footloose", as the anti-fun preacher-father of the love interest.

I'm very very happy you loved this movie Cassie, this is one of my all time favorites, it's in my top 100 favorite movies of all time! I grew up watching this movie as a kid and for a brief time I wanted to be a pilot lol! It's actually because of this movie that the B-17 Flying Fortress is my favorite WWII bomber that we had in our arsenal! As for fighter planes, don't get me wrong the P-51 Mustang is my second favorite and it was top of the line back then, but my favorite fighter was the P-40 Tomahawk, those babies are sweet lol! Now I don't know completely on my history of our Airborne battles over the skies of Western Europe, and I don't mean to lower your spirts, but not 100% of this movie is completely accurate! The part about the Memphis Belle flying for 25 missions is true however, so don't worry your pretty little head about that lol! If you want a more in depth story about the Memphis Belle, I recommend you check out the 1944 documentary "Memphis Belle: A Story of a Flying Fortress" I've watched it a few times, I'm sure you'll like it! As of where the B-17 is currently, it's preserved and on display at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio! Of course it has been referbished, so not much of it's interior is original, it had suffered from deterioration and vandalism over time, lousy rapscallions lol🤣 Gosh, I'd give anything to see that bomber in person with my own two eyes lol!
I've got to say Cassie, I applaud you👏for recognizing so many actors in this movie, well done! Harry Connick Jr., you would recognize him also from INDEPENDENCE DAY! Nice job recognizing Matthew Modine from FULL METAL JACKET as Pvt. Joker lol! Eric Stoltz who plays Danny the radio operator, he's been in a number of movies, fun fact, he was originally going to play Marty McFly in BACK TO THE FUTURE before Michael J. Fox fully commited to the role because back then he was already commited to the TV show "Family Ties"! I'm sure you probably figured this out, but the actor John Lithgow who played that publicity Colonel, you'd recognize his voice as Lord Farquad from SHREK lol! I'm a little surprised you didn't recognize Billy Zane who played Valentine the bombadier, he was the villain in TITANIC! As for Tate Donovan who played Luke the co-pilot, I too IMDB'd him because I knew him from a few other films, but I couldn't figure it out, however what made my brain explode was a voice over he did for a Disney 90's animated classic, prepare yourself Cassie.......... he voiced Hercules in Disney's HERCULES, WHAT!!!!😱🤯🥴😵LOL🤣
Great watch Cassie, one of your best this year in my opinion! Now that you've seen this, I do so hope soon you'll consider reacting to a few more WWII based movies that are entertaining, though not historically accurate, RED TAILS and U-571, those are great movies! I also highly recommend several other movies that most of these actors have been in, for example, one particular pirate movie that Matthew Modine starred in, CUTTHROAT ISLAND, despite the fact that it was a box office bomb that unfortunately put a studio company out of business I know I know! But it's almost 30 years old now and I think it holds up to this very day and is in my opinion a classic, it remains one of my all time favorite pirate movies that has everything you would expect in a pirate movie, and I'm sure you and Carly would enjoy watching it as well, we need to get some pirate movies on this channel lol! I also recommend a super hero movie Billy Zane did that's gained a cult following and this based off of comic super hero predates Superman & Batman, I recommend THE PHANTOM, it's a fun campy somewhat cheesy movie that does have quite a bit of Indiana Jones vibes, but very entertaining, I'm sure you'll like it! Anyway, thanks for making my night Cassie, really enjoyed this reaction! Love and support always, you're the best (Carly too) lol! Have a happy Monday, and God bless you and the family🥰😁😉🤗😇👍✌🌹

Hope you're gonna eventually get to Red Tails. I haven't seen Memphis Belle yet, but Red Tails is about some of the fighters that protected the bombers like it. Would be fun for me to rewatch it. Glad they didn't throw Danny out. Eric Stolz who played Danny (as noted in a comment above) played the drug dealer in Pulp Fiction who sold heroin to Vincent Vega at "friend prices" and later had the adrenaline shot for Mia Wallace.
There are several actors in this movie that I like. You noted a few. Billy Zane (Val) as a relatively new actor showed his talent. Matthew Modine did well as both Captain Dennis here and as Joker in FMJ. As you likely know, Harry Connick, Jr. (good voice) was with Sandra Bullock in "Hope Floats" (1998).
I like the awesome "Masters of the Air" better, but this is a good movie. I like the second half of the movie more than the first half. Less cliches. While the character development that exists is somewhat muddled to me, I could feel the human experience of the crew collectively. Well done by the movie in that respect.

Lol, pretty funny this one got you reaching for IMDB midway through the movie; this was quite the ensemble. Eric Stoltz played Marty McFly in "Back to the Future" but was replaced mid-shoot by Michael J. Fox and also played a drug dealer in "Pulp Fiction". Matthew Modine was in "Full Metal Jacket". Billy Zane played the bad guy fiancé engaged to Kate Winslet in "Titanic". His best movie was the thriller "Dead Calm", which also starred Nicole Kidman. Sean Astin is Samwise Gamgee in "Lord of the Rings". Harry Connick Jr., crooner extraordinaire, was also in "Independence Day" with Will Smith. John Lithgow was in the TV show "Third Rock from the Sun". He also played an excellent bad guy in the Sylvester Stallone movie "Cliffhanger". David Strathairn was in "L.A. Confidential" and played the blind guy in "Sneakers". No Bond, but he was in a couple of Bourne movies.
