Star Trek: The Next Generation ( S3 | EPs 17, 23)

Comments

S3 "Captain's Holiday"

Clay F

Thanks. I so hope Data's Day gets through. About midway through that episode, one of the most randomly delightful scenes in the entire series happens. (Though people's mileage will vary.)

WastedPo

She's definitely missing out on certain aspects of this show. I personally love the "slice of life" moments on TNG. But I get the impression that this is precisely the kind of stuff that Cassie's demographic dislikes and isn't voting for.

WastedPo

@Chris I love Attached - but in addition to the list above there is Reunion (which might be required to continue Klingon arc), we have other amazing episodes like Brothers, Data's Day, Devil's Due

John Sullivan

Shore Leave from season 1 of the original series.

Shawn Kildal

"we haven't seen a lot of kissing in Star Trek" guys we're not showing Cassie the right episodes

Neill Shaughness

Its not from this Star Trek series but does anyone remember the Star Trek episode based on Alice In Wonderland with a six foot white rabbit?

Zachary K.

I will be voting for Data’s Day for sure! I think The Inner Life will be voted in.

Mike LL

Certainly agree with Attached: I sense Cassie is just waiting for an episode like that!

Chris Clarke

First Contact lays out the prime directive and the significance of being warp capable, which ties into the film. It's also a Riker episode, which we haven't got a lot of.

EricH

This really highlights to me just how many good episodes there in season 3 alone. I’m so glad you’re enjoying these episodes Cassie! I am so stoked for the season three finale “best of both worlds”. I think you’re really going to love it! As for the episode “Sarek”, Vulcans are not exactly the same as humans and so I wouldn’t consider it abusive for them to repress their emotions. The idea is that they used to be violent savages before they learned how to repress their emotions because, as they stated in the episode, Vulcan emotions are so much more intense than humans emotions.

Cody Nelson

For Season 4, I really hope people vote for both "Data's Day" and "The Nth Degree." I think Cassie would especially enjoy Data's Day. Not only does it focus on characters, but few other episodes capture as well what daily life on the TNG Enterprise is like. But at this point I'm more or less resigned to the fact that very few of my personal favorites are going to be watched. I honestly would not be surprised if when she's wrapped up Season 5, there will be a bunch of messages saying, "Cassie, if you have the spare time, you should watch 'The Inner Light' on your own. It's really pretty good."

WastedPo

Face Of The Enemy is a great episode

Katie Jackson

Second Chances is a great episode. Think also for Troi, Face of the Enemy in season 6

rakesh

Therfore, family shouldn't could as one of the 4! It's just part of the three-part episode 🤣

John Sullivan

I wish we could do it by episode type. One mystery story. One political drama. One human (or non-Human) drama, etc

John Sullivan

After watching this reaction, it will be an absolute crime if the community doesn't vote in Attached (and Remember Me) when the time comes. Honestly, Season 4 is going to be VERY difficult to narrow down... -Best of Both Worlds: Part II -Remember Me -Future Imperfect -The Wounded -Clues -Night Terrors -The Drumhead -In Theory

Holly R

S4 - Ep 2 titled Family is a Part 3 of Best of Both Worlds and also very emotional. You have to watch it!

Hat

OH yea...Chain of Command part 2...that'll be intense

Pianodean

Man I am so hyped for Best of Both Worlds.

Phil Emral

@Clay "The horgan is for a friend." "I see. Someone close to you.." "That's right." "Someone you love.." "I wouldn't go that far."

John Sullivan

Inner Light will make it for sure. Drumhead hopefully

John Sullivan

And all the rest of us

John Sullivan

Amen

John Sullivan

Always enjoy when you crack yourself up Cassie! Almost as much as I enjoy you trying to speak Klingon! 😉 JK Excellent reaction! Two great episodes! Glad you’re liking Picard more and more. Probably an unpopular opinion among trekkies, but I like him more than Kirk. I also like you’re getting to know Worf. Probably my third favorite character behind Picard and Data. Looking forward to the next reaction!

Robert da Spruce

Still so many character building episodes got missed. :(

Chrissonator

Those are hilarious!

Raven Dark

TEAM WORF!!!

Riley

great reaction. These two episodes are some of the best of the series. The depth of the characters is amazing. I'm glad you are enjoying them so much. You're going to love the season finale I believe.

Michael West

I really enjoyed these. I actually own TOS - Enterprise on DVD. I'm betting a lot of people here do though. There's a couple of episodes that I'm hoping for that I know Cassie will really like in the future. Attached in season 6 and Second Chances in season 7. Both would be right up Cassie's ally. My sister is actually named after Deanna Troi. She's always been one of my favorite characters so, I hope we get at least one episode that features here a little more.

Katie Jackson

Couldn't agree more.

Katie Jackson

These were some great episodes. I haven't seen "Sarek" in a while and remembered it was a good episode, but man Sir Patrick Stewart really put in some work. I'm just loving these reactions to this show. Can't wait for the next ones!

Verteron

Aaah we all get to watch our favorite team..."Picard and Ricard". 😀

Ian A

Just out of curiosity, which episodes would you have chosen? This season has a bunch of good episodes. I wish we could have had a few more, but understand why the limit on episodes.

Verteron

Oooh, definitely seconding Family and Brothers. Reunion would continue the next major thread of Worf's storyline too. But I think she'll also REALLY love Data's Day, which features Miles and Keiko, as well as a great dance sequence that Cassie would appreciate. In Theory was hilarious, but having her watch Data's Day beforehand would be ideal for that. A "nice to have" would also be Night Terrors, where Data and Troi have to work together.

hurryupmode

I loved that Sarek called Riker "Number One" , all the fondness Picard has for Riker copied over LOL

hurryupmode

OMG The Klingons calling Worf a "Starfleet Fanboy" in your description made my night.

Scott Macaulay

I think Family is a given, as is Reunion. Reluctantly I'll have to grant Brothers also. But I won't give in on Qpid, which I think will be a popular choice. I want Data's Day as the fourth. I also very much like Clues and Remember Me. Those "head trip" episodes are the best. I will insist on Cause and Effect for season 5, lol. (As if I have any definitive say, LOL)

Mike LL

Rikers beard deserved its own credit spot! The costume department took the request for dress uniforms a little too literally haha. Sims of the father is one of my favorites, digs into big character building and sets up good future arcs. Sarek is a good call back episode to TOS , both episodes are good Picard eps that I think push him a little over Kirk.

Bubba Fett

Yeah, I gave up on advocating for watching the best or most interesting episodes. The prevailing winds are blowing toward watching story arcs and preparation for understanding minor plot points in the movies. I vehemently and fundamentally disagree with that premise, but it's a lost cause and I don't want to see a repeat of the rancor in the comments from the last several weeks. IMO let's just vote, and then go along to get along.

Allan Rumberger

For season 4 I'm going to vote "Family", "Brothers", "Reunion", and "In Theory." Qpid is a very skippable Q episode and Cassie didn't seem very excited to see him again on Deja Q anyway. The Drumhead is one of my all time favorite episodes and I wouldn't be opposed to it getting in but I think she'd love "In Theory." She deserves a lighthearted episode for a change and "In Theory" is totally her vibe.

greggreggreg2000

I'd forgotten how good "Sarek" was.

Zeroarmor7

The power of Rikers beard has taken a hold of her.

UKaiser98

Todd also plays adult Jake in DS9 ep 4.2. One of the best Star Trek eps ever imo.

Pickupthepieces76

I'm sure someone has said this already, but Khitomer (where Worf's father died) is where the secret conference was held in Star Trek 6. Michael Dorn (Worf) played Kirk and McCoy's defense attorney.

David Patterson

Like you, I really enjoy some character driven Trek! And the character of Sarek is always a joy to watch thanks to Mark Lenard's portrayal. Looking forward to you taking on the season finale: it will be epic! (Keep working on the 🖖: you're doing so well!😊)

Chris Clarke

Love it!

Stephen Dias

“Picard and Ricard” is an all-timer, Cassie. That was hilarious😂

Bryan Erickson

Yes, I hope we get to the episodes "Family" and "Homeward." There are others, I'm sure.

Stephen Dias

Those were two good episodes. Hopefully you get to see more of Worf's family story. It is very good. Great Reaction Cassie.

Rick Williams

These episodes are what develops TNG into the classic tv series that it is. It’s the character centric episodes that make TNG so different than TOS. TOS was more plot driven than TNG. Action was never the main factor in TNG, it’s the character arcs, contemplative themes, and how as an audience we grow to truly care about these characters. That’s why decades later the audience loved Picard Season 3 (2023) so much because it was a love letter to the fans about where and how these beloved characters were doing. The show runner Terry Matalas pulled it off beautifully. I look forward to seeing Cassie’s reaction to the season 3 finale that made the 80’s season cliffhanger one of the best of the decade. Thanks for watching the series young lady, it makes us older folks nostalgic.

Anthony Oberhauser

Family is such a wonderful episode, particularly in light of what Picard endures beforehand. One of the best of the series.

Chris Clarke

I guess we skipped that weird episode with Ron Howard's brother cackling as a child. Not sure where that comes from but I saw it in a meme I think and it's hilarious.

Chris Thom

Stop cracking your knuckles, Cassie! Stop it! Stop it!😖😂 [Shudders!]

Chris Clarke

It's the results of those darn polls. Many people seem to be focused on "important" episodes (callbacks to TOS or "lore" based), or episodes that set up the movies. It's making me dubious going forward. There are certain episodes that I assumed everyone would want reactions to, but now I think there's only a very slim chance they'll get watched. I'm also realizing that a lot of people don't appreciate the moments that focus on characters or light-heartedness, which is so odd to me, since those elements are what I enjoy most about Next Generation.

WastedPo

you could not have chosen a more boring pair of episodes.

pat on

Reunion (Season 4 Ep 7) will be an important next Worf episode as well as the season 4 finale. I think it should make the voted top 4 (assuming the premiere and finale are auto-picked)

Marcos

Hot take: Worf is the show's best character. Data and Picard get most of the best moments of course, and are probably the show's best *performances*, but Worf, as a literary creation, just has so many wonderful layers and angles that effortlessly create drama wherever he goes which he consistently rises to in interesting and revealing ways. And while Michael Dorn came into the show with considerably less experience or confidence as an actor than Spiner or Stewart, he also showed the most impressive growth over the series (and into DS9). His fierce dedication to a deeper understanding of Worf and of Klingons generally is inspiring and one of this era of Star Trek's greatest assets. It's also something the movies, unfortunately, didn't seem to notice, as they could never muster much interest in anybody but Data or Picard. That's why I've been pushing to feature plenty of Worf now, while we have the opportunity.

Robin T

She seemed bothered by the sound of the outfit, which I never paid attention to that sound before. She notices details.

Clay F

Picard is awesome. I also like Kirk -- charasmatic and true leader.

Clay F

I think Cassie would have enjoyed Captain's Holiday, even with the view of cheeks.

Clay F

(I took a break in between sessions) You're right about the Vulcan emotional suppression being akin to abuse - but its sadly necessary for the species as a whole. Vulcan history is scarred by rampant emotions before they learned control - they apparently put even Klingons to shame with their violence towards each other. Which is terrifying to think about.

Laura Thornley

I find the tng bloopers from the dvd set pretty hilarious. Michael Dorn Aka Worf continuously breaks character. Season 2 gags https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NOM-kLfDR8 Season 3 ( checked, contains no spoilers) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHXg9oKoWak

rakesh

Cassie, I can't tell you what a thrill it is to go through these episodes with you. I was never quite the Star Trek geek that my brother was, he had all these episodes, the entire series recorded on VHS as they came out. So I have seen all these episodes, but not in the last 20 years or so, lol. It is so fun and gratifying watching you absorb the stories, the culture, the character development midst some strange adventures created for TV long ago. It is almost giving me as much enjoyment, watching you watch the highlights of this series, as watching all my beloved 60 and 70 year old classic movies. Yes, your Star Trek is my favorite reactions on this channel now. Engage.

Mike LL

To be fair, even different actors pronounced some things differently in these episodes. You'd think. at some point, someone would ask "how are we pronouncing Bendii?' or "how are we pronouncing Sarek?"

Stephen Dias

Two great episodes. Patrick Stewart's performance in "Sarek" is amazing. I was moved to tears all over again.

Stephen Dias

There's likely a YouTube video showing several examples of The Picard Maneuver. I'm pretty sure I saw something like that at a convention once.

Stephen Dias

Discommendation basically means that the entire Klingon Empire literally turns their back on Worf and pretends that he no longer exists. He is stripped of his honor and his entire family is shunned, as are his decedents for seven generations. I have to admit, that I was not expecting that "Shut Up Wesley!" at all and almost spit my beverage all over my desk. lol.

Dustin Denner

These episodes are a great choice, I agree. If she watches them, I also think she would enjoy each one.

Tom Furze

That was some of the best Cassyisms to date: "Pickard & Rickard" "He does have bendy syndrome" "What if Troi helped Sacky" Nice to see Patrick Stewart show off a bit of his Shakespearian theatre skills doing about a dozen different characters Kind of ironic that during the mind meld, Picard spoke of "tenderness", which kind of melded with Cassie in a sweet sort of way

John Drake

Cassie has the best observational quotes. “That outfit looks leathery and uncomfortable” even though I should be used to it they always hit me sideways 😂

Wes

Discommendation is essentially exile - admitting guilt and forsaking any claims or rights. Its considered a dishonourable act by Klingons - valuing their own life over their honour.

Laura Thornley

The one and only Tony Todd (who plays Commander Kurn) is a surprisingly underrated actor. Its amazing just how many movies he's been in!

Laura Thornley

I’m so relieved that you get the pulse of Picard now (not that Ricard guy, lol). Jean Luc is no James T. Kirk, but he does exude class, professionalism and a passion for his officers that’s infectious. This was very much the reaction we were hoping for and we got exactly that. From here on… there is something called “The Picard Maneuver” with his uniform. See if you can figure out what it is 😉

Ike

Yeah, he absolutely does. And dare to say, I find the Klingon arc in DS9 even better than the TNG one.

Gábor Árki

Patrick Stewart is such a great actor and the "Sarek" episode really allowed him to show his range. He called this one of the most challenging acting roles in the whole 7 seasons. Mark Lenard's performance shouldn't be underestimated either. Great reaction as always Cassie , really pleased you are enjoying them.

Neil

Finished watching "Sarek" I think if Cassie was impressed with Stewarts acting in this, she'll love "The Drumhead", " The Inner light", "Darmok", and "Chains of Command Part II"

rakesh

You can tell Michael Dorn absolutely loved his work, Worf only works as a character due to his gravitas as an actor. The fact they bring him back for DS9 is no coincidence.

KTVindicare

My choices are: Family, Reunion, The Wounded and Brothers. Family closes an important story line from Season 3 (but gets reintroduced in First Contact movie). Reunion is essential for the Season finale and the Wounded is an important introduction to the Cardassian Cold War which is an important backdrop to several episodes in the later seasons. Brothers is important for introducing a character that will be very important in a later season finale and plays a minor part in Star Trek Generations. This is assuming that Cassie treats the Season finale like she treated the finale of Season 3.

KTVindicare

Don't get me wrong, I do think "Brothers" is a decent episode, I just don't think it will make it. As for Q, I also agree there have been too many Q episodes, which is why I advocated that we skip "Deja Q" for "The Offspring." However, that's not what voters are doing. All the other Q episodes going forward, apart from "True Q," are worth watching and I can't see them skipping "Qpid". People will pick "Reunion," because people will want to complete that loop. So that's two definites like it or not. My hope is for "The Drumhead," but with all these crazy picks so far, it's a coin flip. And the only reason why "Family" edges out "Brothers" is that Family feels somwhat like an epilogue to BOBW. Maybe also because of links to Generations. We shall see which one of us is victorious!

rakesh

I have never seen better performances than in "Sarek." Jean-Luc and Sarek were both portrayed beautifully, and it's amazing to see such a compassionate view of the ravages of dementia expressed in the realm of science fiction. This kind of intelligent allegory is exactly what the genre enables, when talented writers are involved. Thank you for this reaction!

Ben Livingstone

That's brutal 😮

John Sullivan

#SaveTheOffspring #BringBackOffspring

John Sullivan

@Clay maybe Family. I think she'll love that one. I'd personally be very happy with any of these: Brothers, Reunion, Family, The Drumhead, Future Imperfect, Data's Day, Devil's Due, Clues, First Contact, The Wounded, Legacy

John Sullivan

Have to agree to disagree. Maybe it's my teenage nostalgia but I put Brothers way up there on the list. My votes go to: Brothers, Reunion, Family, The Drumhead But I would be very happy with: Future Imperfect, Data's Day, Devil's Due, Clues, First Contact, The Wounded, Legacy Just no Qpid. Does she need every freaking Q episode? 🤣

John Sullivan

If you were not concerned about continuing the Klingon arc (i.e., with Reunion), is there another S4 episode (besides Brothers) you consider essential?

Clay F

I think she would very much like S3E16 Offspring. When I did my first rewatch of TNG, I remembered that episode the most of S3, even more than the S3 finale.

Clay F

Reunion is one of the ones I'll be voting for and campaigning for. Not only does it continue the Worf storyline but it also picks up the Kay'lar storyline that Cassie liked from Season 2.

KTVindicare

I disagree on both counts! Brothers isn't essential. Some cool scenes but we have already had introduction to one of the other characters. In regards to the MacGuffin there's nothing here that can't be ( and has been) explained with one line in "Generations". Qpid doenst haven to be paired with Cptains Holiday It would have been nice as background, but its stands perfectly well by itself. hell, you could even take it from the POV of the crew as they didnt know anything about her either. It' a moot point as it's gonna happen regardless. The masses always have voted for his eps, it's a romantic epsiode which Cassie will enjoy 100% and she's warmed up to the character. Face facts friend! I don't make the rules!

rakesh

You are getting better at the Vulcan "Live long and prosper" keep practicing. It will full come I have no doubt. And I so agree with you that the captain's performance was amazing. The Vulcans for wanting to suppress emotions, sure seem to know how to elicit it from us. Thanks again Cassie.

Tom Furze

Brothers is essential. It's one of the best episodes in the Data arc Qpid should be paired with Captain's Holiday, which we didn't watch. Just watch that one Worf quote on YT 🤣

John Sullivan

Whitegirl adorable? Yikes … a little tone deaf, no? I mean, what would your comment be if she were black … would you feel it appropriate to call her black girl adorable? 😬 probably just leave race out of things … The More You Know

Rollo Tomassi

cassie mispronouncing words is somehow forever whitegirl adorable

Augustine Lee

@ John Sullivan It will be a interesting to see what doesn't make the cut for Season 4 but I reckon it will end up 2 "Family" 7 "Reunion" 20 "Qpid" 21 "The Drumhead" Redemption, Part I/II I like the following 19 "The Nth Degree" - we missed Barclays intro, this is a good ep, but competition is stiff 14 "Clues" - A good Mystery episode, but ultimately no consequence or long standing impact.. 11 "Data's Day" - recently rewatched. an ok day in the life of data. i think skippable though 5 "Remember Me" - probably the best Dr Crusher episode in the series. 3 "Brothers" - If only for the password encryption but looking how voting has gone so far I reckon the first 4 and 2 parter will happen

rakesh

Yeah, these are all real-life makeup and prosthetics. I think for Michael Dorn (Worf) his makeup time started with 4+ hours but as his prosthetics evolved and his makeup artist got more experience with it, they managed to squeeze it to around 3 hours. For guest stars and extras it was a bit more. But Dorn had to spend that time in makeup every single day, arriving 3 hours before his non-makeup cast members so that they will be ready at the same time. And they usually had quite long shooting days. That is some dedication for the part.

Gábor Árki

Season 4 thoughts for the next poll: Essential: - Brothers - Reunion (required to continue Klingon arc) Fun/Interesting: - Future Imperfect - Data's Day (Data's journal/POV) - Devil's Due (plays with theme of using technology for exploitation - but in a fun way) - Clues (mystery episode) - First Contact Personal Drama: - Family - The Loss - Legacy - In Theory (I think this is a lame/slow episode, but Cassie might like it.) Political Drama: - The Drumhead (personal favorite!) - The Wounded (Cardassians introduced) - The Nth Degree - The Mind's Eye (so-so Geordi episode) Skip: - QPid (Please no! I beg you, guys! Cassie doesn't even know who Vash is) - Suddenly Human - Remember Me - Galaxy's Child (we didn't see 1st Leah Brahms episode) - Half a Life (Cassie doesn't know Lwaxana) - The Host (1st Trill episode, but not good)

John Sullivan

*Laughs in Expat* 🤣

John Sullivan

Felt (Squeaky!) Kurn was hard done by. His overall arc in this and DS9 felt pretty sad by the end. I guess we're doing the whole Klingon Arc then, which will be interesting as it will sacrifice a lot of other good eps. I also forgot how much I liked the tweaks in Worfs looks this season with the longer hair and Yellow uniform and sash. Onwards to the Best of Both Worlds! ( still secretly hoping for an offspring surprise viewing.) Surprise us Cassie!

rakesh

[3:33 am] I’m up! I’m up. Let me put on my brand new glasses and go get some coffee. These are the really good ones most voted for.

Ike

I guess we need to watch "Reunion" in S4 now? S4 has a lot of "essential" episodes 😬

John Sullivan

Yay. It's the middle of the night, but putting on your reaction now. EDIT: Enjoyed your reaction. Hate that you dealing w/seasonal allergies. Picard is the No. 1 reason I became hooked on this series. In E23, yes those "dresses" are formal uniforms. I thought you would like seeing Spock's father (and the Vulcan salute) and have that connection to the original ST. In E17, I have never noticed the sound coming from Worf's brother's suit/body when he moved around. You notice details. The first half of E17 is somewhat analogous to Riker serving on a Klingon ship in an excellent S2 episode ("A Matter of Honor"), which I believe came in 5th in the S2 final poll. As for the second half of E17, a good example of Picard supporting his crew -- here he was Team Worf all the way. I am no expert, but as you seemed to recognize, what Worf did (worse than death for him) at the end of the episode was for his brother. Worf could have chose to die for the Klingon Empire to avoid civil war, but discommendation also accomplishes that. I think also Worf maybe chose discommendation (and thus not dying) for Picard and to not cause potential alliance tensions.
