Upcoming Ya'll

I spent one weekend in the south and I'm ya'll-ing all over the place!! I had a whirlwind trip to Charleston SC, with 8 of my cousins and it was stunning and so needed and wonderful. Except the last travel day. We had tried to save money by driving to vegas and flying from there but when our flight got delayed by 4 hours, we were suddenly having to drive from 12am-6am to make it home. All the sour skittles and caffeine couldn't help me. I didn't trust myself driving but I was a passenger talker-keep-awaker. Yesterday I was a zombie but here we are back again! Check out some pics at the bottom of the post, it was so BEAUTIFUL there.

It was embarrassing how much I talked about movies on the trip guys. Every place we visited reminded me of a movie I had seen, especially with all the history in Charleston. "have you guys seen 12 years a slave?" "Have you guys seen Glory or Lincoln?" "Have you guys seen Steel Magnolias?" after seeing all the Magnolia trees. It didn't stop haha.

This week we have some fun ones I think! Planes, spaceships and cocaine oh my! Also, I just actually went randomly live on here to do a live drawing of movie requests #100-250, I had to take it down but it was chaotic and we picked 9 movies for a poll, I'll put that up soon. Also give me your best suggestions for a foreign movie poll on the comments on this post. Our wildcard poll winner from the sweet 16 was Total Recall. I'll watch that after I'm done the final four.

I am loving LOVING the spring weather, almost time to plant all my flowers, kids are winding down school, you get to wear shorts and a sweater in the evening and it feels like birds should help me get dressed in the morning! I hope where you are you are enjoying the start of spring and all the peps in your steps.

Going to have the Extra Butter Live 3/29 at 7:30 PM MST

Pop Quiz Trivia Night will be in MAY!

Ok going to coach a soccer game, were 0-2 but tonight feels like our night!

Love you all.

Cassie

Have you yet considered Event Horizon for a react? You've seen enough horror flicks now that you should be ready for this one. As well, I also recommend watching Ultramarines and Helsreach -- these are films set in the Warhammer 40000 franchise, and they'd be a good primer for when the Warhammer 40K Cinematic Universe launches in the next couple of years with Henry Cavill (Man of Steel, The Witcher, Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare) as Executive Producer

Robert N Douglass

Thanks for the info, Dave! Will do - and the video was great 😊

Rose

Oh, that one is excellent. The Grey Fox is another great Canadian film.

Jeff Boice

i think she will love it overall, its a great movie...maybe a couple of scenes she might not like too much but she will love the ending

Ewanbhoy Martin

Coast-to-coast drives are a life experience and such an adventure! (twice!). If you ever get over to visit your aunt and uncle, make sure you side trip to Asheville (about 15 miles away) and Hendersonville (just south of Asheville), which looks like a Hallmark town (especially in August/Sept which is apple season there - so many varieties). There's also Brevard and Traveler's Rest (also great during peach season - SO fresh), which are just above Greenville, SC. Here's a glimpse at Black Mountain, truly a special place!: https://youtu.be/vEiZCbHQIxA?si=jALnLA5aJXTKdRIe

I need to do a proper tour of the Carolinas! Also I know you and a few others have rec Cinema Paradiso so I had to put it on top 🤗 I really enjoyed that one and the score is gorgeous. Someone else mentioned Howl’s Moving Castle and I really would love to see Cassie’s reaction to that one but remembered her past experience with Spirited Away (regardless still one of my fav PiB reactions). However, I’m glad others have suggested Your Name.

Rose

I haven’t been there but I must visit; I love mountains and it’s such a quaint town. My aunt and her husband visited us in SoCal once before. During my cross-country roadtrip I just zoomed down the east coast and didn’t have much time for sightseeing (time crunch because of job relocation). I had always wanted to do a cross-country road trip so I took advantage - ended up driving coast to coast twice. It was a great adventure!

Rose

A lot of looking away from the screen in that one

Stick Figure Studios

I forgot about SHALL WE DANCE? That's a lovely film.

Stick Figure Studios

I predict she will not like it.

Stick Figure Studios

Just watched an amazing movie based on true events the name is Finest Hours awesome movie must recommend

Kevin Mazza

oh my goodness… True Romance? Well… that’ll be an experience for sure.

djKENTO

I know it’s heresy, Stick Figure, but I thought William Friedken’s adaptation of Wages of Sin - Sorcerer -with Roy Schieder and Burno Cremer was superior to the original. And the original was great.

Above Average Dave

That is such a beautiful little town - just outside of Asheville and right in the Blue Ridge. Such a great community and, for such a small place, lots to do (and eat!). Have you/do you visit? We love that place! It’s not far from the county farmer’s market in the summer (straight-up amazing) and smack in the middle of mountain biking and hiking paradise.

Above Average Dave

Meet Joe Black, Legends of the Fall.

Above Average Dave

Very much so. All about the true Orwellian nightmare that was East Germany and the Stasi during the cold war - but told through the eyes and experiences of just a few characters. It is a truly haunting movie and has a ton of implications with how we are tracked and recorded through so many different devices today.

Above Average Dave

God bless, and thank you, Kevin.

Maybe for the foreign film poll... maybe could include the category type of each movie because... maybe fewer people would have seen the film and would have to guess from the title alone what kind of movie it might be (for example "Thriller" "Comedy" et cetera). A link to a full description would be better though. Also maybe the less Cassie knows about the film the better, maybe, so the descriptions would be for the voters... who may not be familiar with some titles. Another thought - a different reactor started saying on their poll "Please only vote for a movie that you plan to watch - if you are not going to watch it, don't vote for it." Which I think is sensible. It's a solution to certain particular issues.

Mannygogou

I saw Hard Boiled in the theater years ago (one of those revival? theaters) and I remember the loud din at the bird house! And then with the action... the astounding action... I noticed one guy in a seat in front of me, they would see something in awe and they'd turn their head to look at their buddy next to them! Meanwhile they're missing 66% of the action! You see they're used to normal "western action" and they see something incredible on the screen and their "full" already... but John Woo (director) has just started with the sequence... and there are still 66% of the scene left to see but the guy thinks it's over - sensory overload - can't take in anymore - they're looking at their buddy to confirm how astonishing the sequence was... The sequence that they didn't even see in full. This is a little spoilery talk isn't it? 🙂 But there was a time you could describe this movie to someone and they wouldn't believe you anyway... it could still be like that today.

Mannygogou

These are great choices, Rose! Downtown Greenville, Clemson and the whole mountain area is fantastic. Such a different vibe from the Low Country, Charleston, Mount Pleasant, Isle of Palms and that area. Cross-country drives are a whole ‘nother conversation😀😀

Above Average Dave

Aw hey Dave - my aunt lives with her husband in NC (Black Mountain).

Rose

I can’t wait for Memphis Belle! Here are a few of my favorite foreign films: - Cinema Paradiso (1988) Italian Drama - The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) Classic French Silent Film **Must-see** Viggo’s favorite film!! - The Secret in Their Eyes (2009) Argentina Crime/Thriller - Shall We Dance? (1992) Japanese Rom-com - Forbidden Games (1952) French War Drama Highly recommend driving cross-country in the U.S. South Carolina is absolutely beautiful and before I moved from Arlington, Virginia I went to see the cherry blossoms in D.C. - stunning 😍

Rose

Cassie, based on your observed appreciation and sensitivity for films based on true stories, drama, war, etc. I think you would very likely appreciate the movie THE KILLING FIELDS (from 1984), which is based on a true story of journalists in the events in Cambodia in the mid 1970s, and one of the lead actors was an actual refugee/survivor. It won and was nominated for several Oscars.

Elias Shaikh

It’s funny that without watching Hard Boiled , a person could (from the Title) mistakenly think it has something to do with breakfast.

Elias Shaikh

Apparently it came out in 1999; it's on YouTube, and Amazon have it on disc. Good reviews if you Google The Road Home Chinese film.

Chris Clarke

YOUR NAME is so, so good.

Matt Rose

So fun! If you come down here again (or over here, I guess, since you're flying from Utah), and you want to give the group a heads-up, my wife and I live in NC and love food, so we know lots of good places between here and Savannah. Of course, your family is always welcome for a home-cooked Italian meal too! Cheers and glad you got away and had fun!

Above Average Dave

The Host (2006) - Korean, by Bong Joon-ho (I forgot this one, I used to recommend it all the time...🙂) (Edit) Top 3 choice from my foreign film recommends - but I can't tell if these are the "best" - the other ones I mentioned I haven't seen in a while... Hard Boiled (1992) - Hero (2002) - Godzilla Minus One (2023) available streaming soon

Mannygogou

Me personally, I like Masters of the Air better than Memphis Belle.

Clay F

Yes on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (the original). Back in the day, I watched that before the remake.

Clay F

Blinkande lyktor is awesome 🙂

Björn Karlsson

Hard Boiled - So many American action movies owe a lot to that great film, as well as some Asian ones - The Raid Redemption comes to mind.

Richard Maurer

How about all 3?

Richard Maurer

this was the magnolia one, also old rice field crops, we took the tour!

Cassie

Time to stock up on some Roman Ale, maybe.

Elias Shaikh

Oh wow, ok

Elias Shaikh

Yeah, I believe the popcorn requests app also shows them as seen which is why I was so confused because in her dialogue in the reaction it seemed like she had no experience with Sherlock Holmes really other than pop culture references

JC762

the first two watched episodes from season 3 were posted as watchalongs, the second 2 episodes will be tomorrow and the YT release Saturday for all 4

Cassie

I noticed that too and immediately got excited about a theme week where she could watch one of the old Basil Rathbone / Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes movies, YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES and the two Guy Ritchie / Robert Downey Jr ones, but her letterboxd list says she's already seen the first RDJ movie, so who knows?

Stick Figure Studios

Thank you. Been here a while, though, just not on Patreon. CT on YouTube channel.

Welcome to the PIB community Chris! 😎

I think she should start with the original Japanese release of Godzilla before she gets to Shin Godzilla or Godzilla -1

ok , wow 4 hours thats crazy . Y'ALL must of been hurtin 😋😄 I'm right there with you on the movie quiz especially since they are fresh in your mind , so did they see most of the movies ? pictures are great , that bridge one with the water 😍😍 sorry no foreign films come to mind.

Sam R.

Been waiting for Memphis Belle for a while! Hell yeah!!!

John Casamassa

Yeah we have watched a few Brad Pitt movies with her my favorite of course is Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Then there is Fury, 12 Years A Slave. I think I am forgetting one or two .

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

IDK if Sanjuro is better, but it definitely feels like a more rounded story.

Uncle Phoenix

I, sadly, never got around to watching Star Trek; and I am really enjoying these episodes and would definitely enjoy more.

Uncle Phoenix

AND…Brad Pitt shows up. (Popcorn loves BP)

Uncle Phoenix

Love that your movie knowledge is invading your real life, that's so cool. You'll love Memphis belle which is much more of the story of a single air crew of the 8th Air Force in the 324th Bombardment squadron. Your vacation photos look great, glad you enjoyed the south! Come back anytime!

David

Yes. Most Japanese anime is notoriously difficult to get past the copyright guard dogs.

Joe “Retroclassic” Pinney

THE JOY LUCK CLUB (1993) is actually an American film. It’s in both English and Chinese (Mandarin). So you’re right, it doesn’t qualify as a foreign film, even though it’s partly in a language other than English. It doesn’t really even qualify as a “foreign language film” because so much of it is in English.

Joe “Retroclassic” Pinney

I could have definitely come up with more. 😂 I know for certain that I haven’t included an awful lot that should be seen by any budding cineaste. But it’s okay; movie lists are great because you see lots of titles that you’ve never seen before, and maybe something sounds intriguing, and you jot it down or look it up online, maybe read a little about it, add it to your watchlist, probably ask someone about it, and eventually you see it and are (hopefully) enriched by it. It’s just like English language movies. There’s so many movies and so little time to see them all, but over the course of our lives, we can certainly try. Why limit ourselves to just the popular ones?

Joe “Retroclassic” Pinney

No ones suggested Betty Blue aka 37°2 le matin. A wonderfully strange tale of decent into madness. It's altogther entirely too risqué for this channel ( especaily the first 4 minutes), but its still a haunting movie. Béatrice Dalle was impossibly beautiful in that movie. almost like a proto Angelia Jolie. That movie poster adorned many a university students room in the late 80's

rakesh

Some of it, most was filmed a bit south in Beaufort SC, as was "The Big Chill"

Keith Jones

I fear such a huge list will put off potential picks. But have to say you've got some corkers in there. "City of God" is a fantastic film, forgot about that one, so i'll add that to my list also!

rakesh

THEATRICAL My guess is she will react to the theatrical version, which you can rent/stream on Amazon Prime Video ($3.49) or Apple TV ($3.99). UNRATED -- DIRECTOR'S CUT You can stream the unrated version (apparently director's cut which adds a little more violence) at Vudu (Fandango at Home) for $3.99.

Clay F

Indeed. Particularly the scene with James Gandolfini. Pure psychopath.

Ip Man (2008) -- good suggestion.

Clay F

True Romance is intense.

Clay F

+1 for Let the Right One In

Clay F

I feel like you've done plenty of Next Gen homework - bring on the movies!!

Odd Thomas

True Romance is actually known for one scene it should be two but " The Sicilian Scene" (Christopher Walker/Dennis Hopper) is one of the most iconic scenes in movie history. Tarantino himself has said that is one of his most proudest moments. Tony Scott directed this but Tarantino wrote the screenplay. James Gandolfini was cast as Tony Soprano because of this movie. Gary Oldman and Val Kilmer are so well disguised you won't recognize them.

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

Is that a drama?

Chris Thom

That's what I gathered. Zero knowledge about it.

Chris Thom

Foreign films: Your Name(2016 ‧Japanese/Fantasy/Romance) - I have requested this about 100 times and will continue to do so because believe you will love it. It's kinda like a Disney movie combined with a rom-com designed for a 16 year old and mixed with some Sci-Fi. What could go wrong? :D Ip Man (2008) - Chinese movie based on a true story.

Joseph Peters

Yes but easiest way to call it out from the RDJ movies. The office is also British but………

JC762

The British series ? Even the RDJ ones are done by Brit Guy Ritchie. Holmes is British !

pinkdino99

Hey all. In a recent Star Trek reaction. (The Data/Sherlock one) if I heard right Cassie seemed to imply that she hadn’t really seen any Sherlock Holmes stuff. I don’t think she mentioned the RDJ movies or the British series with dr strange :). Is it possible she really hasn’t seen these or did I miss something?

@ Chris Thorne - It has the power of consistency (so some power, but not very much). And to join the committee all you need do is post requests for a Classic Horror poll in every Upcoming post Cassie makes. And it doesn't hurt if you can find a way to make the post interesting.

some others - Return of Martin Guerre/Sommersby, Wages of Fear/Sorcerer

Birdie Num Num

...and City of God (from Brazil thou), The Hunters, Dead snow, Nikita, A man called Ove, Jalla! Jalla!, Kopps, Evil.

I was gonna suggest Godzilla Minus One, but it s not out yet for streaming or purchase i think

Hehehe... If that would have helped 🙄🙄

Hopefully you've included this already, 3 Idiots

I considered recommending the 1994 La fille de d'Artagnan (Revenge of the Musketeers), starring Sophie Marceau as the daughter of d'Artagnan. It's fun and I enjoyed it (other than rolling my eyes at most of the swordplay), but I ultimately decided it was a bit too inconsequential.

Foreign movie: Dramas: 𝑫𝑶𝑾𝑵𝑭𝑨𝑳𝑳 - This is the movie all those angry hitler memes came from a couple of years back. Its truly quite an amazing film about the last days of Hitler in his bunker. It shows an important part of WWII that is rarely seen. You've gottten into a groove watching war movies and this is much much more and i think this is rates very highly. Oscar nominated. I second all the german movie suggestions and my favourite of them is good bye lenin!

Alecco

I'm always up for more horror

Eddie Perkins

Foreign movie suggestions: DAS BOOT / THE BOAT (1981) - Probably the most well-known German movie internationally. I recommend the longer Director's Cut, although here in Europe you don't even have access to the theatrical afaik. GOOD BYE LENIN! (2003) - In 1990 a young man is trying to shield his mother awaking from a coma from the reality that the Berlin wall has fallen, and her beloved East Germany is no more. DAS LEBEN DER ANDEREN / THE LIVES OF OTHERS (2006) - A 2007 Oscar winner about how the East German secret police is surveilling someone. THE INTOUCHABLES (2011) - A quadriplegic aristocrat hires a young man from the projects to be his caregiver. LES AVENTURES DE RABBI JACOB / THE MAD ADVENTURES OF RABBI JACOB (1973) - Probably doesn't have a chance, just wanted to give some recognition to the amazing comedian Louis de Funès. My first pick would have been LA GRANDE VADROUILLE (1966), a WW2 comedy, but apparently that is not streaming in the USA.

Gábor Árki

Rashomon is great and all but The Hidden Fortress gave us Star Wars..It would be cool for Cassie to catch all the similarities

Jacob Wagner

A lot of good ones have been mentioned, out of those, ‘Rashomon’ is my favorite. To me, it’s Kurosawa’s greatest contribution to cinema. But if I may, I’ll add two films. One is ‘Incendies’ (2010), one of Denis Villenueve’s (director of Dune) first films, it is truly astonishing. The other is ‘The Hunt’ (2012), a Danish film with Mads Mikkelsen giving maybe the best performance of his career. It’s also tough to watch but I believe it’s very important. And let me know if you need coaching tips from a licensed UEFA coach🫡

Welcome home from Charleston Cassie! Glad you had a great vacation with your cousins! And so sorry the trip home was stress-fest. Beautiful pics of you, Carly and the cousins! I don’t have a lot of experience with foreign language films, but I would like to suggest the original Japanese release of Godzilla (not the American release, which is dubbed in English). David Patterson

LOVE to see Memphis Belle on here out of the blue…you’ll love it! I got give Masters of the Air a full shake. It didn’t grab me at first but I’ll chalk it up to being during a busy time for me. I’m sure it’s very good.

Great photos of all y’all! As for foreign language films, you have quite a few great suggestions here. Very. very fond of CINEMA PARADISO (Italian and a love note to the movies) and WINGS OF DESIRE (German) but I’ll add BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF because it’s pretty amazing, and because Émilie Dequenne, Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel all in the same film.

Above Average Dave

Foreign films: Possibly my favorite film of all time is LES ENFANTS DU PARADIS (1945), a remarkable romantic epic miraculously made during the German occupation of France. I think you would love it. Another French film I would recommend include DIVA (1981), a stylish and quirky thriller that kind of set the aesthetic tone for the 80s, and for your cinematic education you have to delve into the films of Francois Truffaut; either 400 BLOWS or JULES ET JIM will do nicely. From Sweden: It's also time that a cinephile like you is introduced to Ingmar Bergman, a tremendously influential filmmaker. Probably his most accessible film and ultimate statement is FANNY AND ALEXANDER, which I think you'd like, and if you want to get a lot of film buffs' references and jokes you should watch THE SEVENTH SEAL. From Japan: aside from the obligatory animation you should watch Kurosawa's RAN, one of the great war movies, and a weird and funny film called TAMPOPO might be the best way to get inside the modern Japanese psyche. Germany: THE TIN DRUM is an intense masterpiece; DAS BOOT is the closest you'll ever get to being inside a submarine, THE LIVES OF OTHERS is an engrossing character study with amazing acting. And WINGS OF DESIRE is essential viewing. Russia: ALEXANDER NEVSKY, HAMLET, and SOLARIS. The Soviets knew how to do historical epics, Shakespeare and metaphysical sci-fi as well as anyone.

This link here shows it $10 cheaper on Amazon. https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/True-Romance-Blu-ray/314068/

Tim Raths

Agree Le Samouraï is great. It is from 1967 though.

Steve Holton

She's seen Amelie.

jdj830

It's expensive but I'm in, it has 3 good commentary tracks: Christian Slater, Tarantino, Tony Scott. That's 4 watches right there.

Brian's Dog

Gonna recommend the Viggo Mortenzen Spanish language film Alatriste(AKA Captain Alatriste: The Spanish Musketeer). I don't think I've ever seen it, but I've always wanted to. It was one of the films he made after LOTR, so he is quite Aragonish. Imagine Aragorn with a big moustache and a big hat.

YodatheHobbit

Le Samourai (1957), a fun French twist on the American Film Noir genre. Tokyo Story (1953) by master Japanese filmmaker, Yasujiro Ozu. Also Certified Copy (2010) though this may cause Cassie too much confusion! I'M still confused...even though I loved it.

Kent Theaker

Foreign Film - "Das Boot" - A German U-boat stalks the frigid waters of the North Atlantic as its young crew experience the sheer terror and claustrophobic life of a submariner in World War II.

Alberto Gramatges

"The past is a foreign country." I shall thus recommend the foreign-language film Much Ado About Nothing (1993 or 2012, Ye Olde Englishe).

Happy Hanukkah

Wow didn't know that thnx for your comment

Chuck Schuldiner

If you order this release you get both versions. https://www.arrowvideo.com/true-romance-blu-ray/13745654.html

Tim Raths

(By the way, the placement of that apostrophe is paining me. Good thing you provided yourself with the travel tiredness excuse. :-) )

Happy Hanukkah

Foreign movie nom: Black Book (The Netherlands)

Pickupthepieces76

Why not it a romance movie at heart, Lol

Greggory Shaw

It's getting rereleased in theaters.

Greg McDaniel

This list should be the poll pretty much lol

Jacob Wagner

You need to visit more Southern states. There really is southern hospitality and so many beautiful places to visit and we have the best food ever.

William Brownlee

Cool I'll mention a foreign film I'm fairly certain nobody will suggest. "Run Lola Run" 1998. It's a Germany film and subtitled. The filming style reminds me a little of the first Matrix film.

Chuck Schuldiner

I love that you are doing a foreign movie poll I would chose these first. 1) Germany "Das Boot" (1981) there are two versions I prefer the longer version but it doesn't matter to me which you pick. 2) Japan "High and Low" (1963). 3) France "Le Samurai" (1967) one of the coolest films. 4) Sweden "Show Me Love" 1998 known also as "Fu#*ing Amal" 5) Italy "The Conformist" (1970) 6) Hong Kong " In the Mood for Love" 2000. 7) Germany "Downfall" 2004. 8) China "Hero" 2002. 9) Spain "The Devil's Backbone" 2002 by Guillermo Del Toro 10) Japan "The Twighlight Samurai" 2002. 11) Italy "Cinema Paradiso" 1988. These are all great choices to star out with.

Damien beatty

I second the recommendations of Life Is Beautiful (1997, Italian), Kung Fu Hustle (2004, Chinese), and Ip Man (2008, Chinese). I'll add the very successful: - The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob (1973, French) - The Visitors (1993, French) - Bon Cop, Bad Cop (2006, French and English) [ADDED:] And while I'm at it: El Mariachi (1992, Spanish).

Happy Hanukkah

Joe “Retroclassic” Pinney

Well, I hope Y’ALL had a good time, lol. Did you eat or drink anything especially good down in South Carolina? (I’m a foodie) Looks like a fun couple of movie in the pipeline - very excited! Sorry, I don’t know any foreign films that you haven’t seen already. [Snatch, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Chocolat’ you’ve already watched] I think?

Ike

Thanks. ,:-) Yeah, WINGS OF DESIRE is sublime. That's one of my wife's favorite movies and she introduced me to it. PURPLE NOON I've always liked, though my favorite Tom Ripley movie (of the four that I have seen so far) is actually THE TALENTED MR RIPLEY (which she never had a chance to watch as she died a few years before it's release).

Stick Figure Studios

My first foreign pick is “Joy Luck Club”, but I have a feeling that it doesn’t qualify, so my second pick is “Eat Drink Man Woman”.

Uncle Phoenix

Foreign- The Man Who Sued God (2001) [a nice little romance], La reine Margot (1994) [I remember liking it but I don't remember anything about it], The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2009), Ichi (2008), Canadian Bacon (1995) [OK not foreign but maybe I can slip it by the goalie?]

Mike Lemon

My suggestion of foreign films: El secreto de sus ojos (2009), from Argentina Den Skyldige (2018), from Denmark Kimi no na wa (2016), from Japan I have seen those with subtitles. I personally don't mind but subtitles are not popular in the US. The first two have been remade in the US but the originals are far better. The third one has been dubbed in English pretty well.

René Ferland

Speaking as a Southerner, let me just say that Cassie and Carly are an absolutely lovely pair of honorary Southern Belles! That being said, and sincerely meant, I think you would both LOVE "Memphis Belle", so I hope Carly can watch it with you!

Richard Rolen

Looks like you had a wonderful trip! Never been to South Carolina before. Looks beautiful! Glad you had got to take a little respite from your busy schedule. Sounds like you’re recharged and ready to jump back into the swing of things. Looks like a nice eclectic week of reactions. Looking forward to all three!

Robert da Spruce

Great choices. Purple Noon was actually Patricia Highsmith's favorite adaptation of her novels. Alan Delon correctly became a star because of it. He's also great in Le Samouraï Wings Of Desire hits amazingly sometimes. So ultimately life affirming.

Steve Holton

Suggestions for foreign films, since anything from studio Ghibli can be tricky on YouTube, I won’t suggest anything from them, but here some good ones: Amilie, House of Flying Daggers, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, La Vie en Rose, Kung Fu Hustle, Diabolique, in the Mood for Love, and Pan’s Labyrinth. Also, from last year, both Anatomy of a Fall and Zone of Interest were very good.

Tinkerbell

Foreign film: Your Name (2016) or Cinema Paradiso (1988) (theatrical release not director's cut)

Richard Mouritzen

The Raid: Redemption (Indonesian action/martial arts) or Brotherhood of the Wolf (French period action horror) or 13 assassins (Japanese samurai action)

Jason Murawski

I've seen Disney Cars (2006) multiple times with my kids. Now that you mention it, I can see both follow a similar template. But that's pretty typical as very few are truly unique.

Tech Citizen

Foreign film suggestions: Das Boot, Downfall

Justin Frey

Cassie, Rafifi is one of the best Heist films ever made, btw.

Jon Johns

Yep Seventh Seal after watching Last Action Hero or even Bogus Journey she ever even gets to Excellent Adventure would be rad

Jacob Wagner

Cassie has a reaction to Amelie on the channel. She's also already seen Life is Beautiful, before the channel...

Jon Johns

Oh!! Can I add: "Wings of desire" vs "City of Angels" to your list!

Jon Johns

Sanjuro is better and has that aweome final duel but I suggested Yojimbo so she can also watch A Fistful of Dollars

Jacob Wagner

Which cut of True Romance will we be watching? I need to order it ahead of time. Thanks!

Brian's Dog

Foreign movies!?!? Rashomon! It's by Akira Krosawa (Seven Samurai) it's a courtroom drama! (Sort of) and has inspired story-tellers ever since; you'll find the premise familiar! You'll see some familiar faces from Seven Samurai, too. (Kurosawa used many of the same actors over and over)

Jon Johns

If I must . . . 😏

Mike LL

I suspect you are right.

Stick Figure Studios

YOJIMBO is great, but I hold the unpopular opinion that it's sequel SANJURO is better.

Stick Figure Studios

Definitely get on Wages of Fear..unfortunately 400 Blows is the only Truffaut film i've seen but I want to see the rest of the series following Doinel's character

Jacob Wagner

@Larry: I agree. Even though I saw both of those films before I saw bergman's, I was familiar enough with the imagery to understand what was being referenced in them.

Stick Figure Studios

I don't think Cassie would make it through this movie. She couldn't make it through World War Z.

Rick Williams

I still need to see WAGES OF FEAR myself, but 400 BLOWS is one of my favorite films from one of my favorite filmmakers Francois Truffaut.

Stick Figure Studios

My suggestion of foreign films: M (1931) Amour (2012) Pan's Labyrinth (2006) A Seperation (2011) Grave of the Fireflies (1988) The Lives of Others (2006)

Martin

Great list. Lots of the same titles on mine. I suspect Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN will be a bit too explicit for Cassie and while I thought about including PICKPOCKET, I decided instead on A MAN ESCAPED for my Bresson (even though my personal favorite of his is DIARY OF A COUNTRY PRIEST, I thought AME would be more accessible).

Stick Figure Studios

Cyrano de Bergerac 1990. It's a more faithful telling of, the source material for Roxanne, which you have reacted to. It's a beautiful love story, I think you'd love it

david smith

When I read about how you kept asking everyone if they've seen this or that movie and couldn't stop talking about them, I laughed so hard. Listen to our Cassie The Movie Buff! Guys, she's one of us! Awesome pics. Looking forward to more movies, and more Trek!

Raven Dark

SOCIETY OF THE SNOW (2023) Spanish, adventure drama, true story MARSHLAND (2014) Spanish, detective thriller NORTH FACE (2008) German, adventure drama, true story HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE (2004) Japanese, animated adventure

Hail to the King

Good one!

Stick Figure Studios

Ah soccer! I was a coach for 15 years and the president of our youth league for 7. While I don’t miss the admin side, I do miss coaching. A few Foreign Films I enjoy: Cyrano de Bergerac (1990) The Secret in Their Eyes (2009) Throne of Blood (essentially based on MacBeth 1957) Admittedly, most of the foreign films I watch are horror and would not fit in the “scary, but not too scary” category 🤣

Justtired

Speaking of Hitchcock (well we weren't speaking of Hitchcock, but we were talking about the Hitchcockian-like CHARADE), since Cassie has now seen VERTIGO, NORTH BY NORTHWEST, PSYCHO, and THE BIRDS, she is now ready to see the the Mel Brooks film HIGH ANXIETY, which spoofs all those Hitchcock films. And if Cassie likes Mel Brooks spoof films (she liked MEN IN TIGHTS and YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, and tolerated SPACEBALLS) as much as I like to write too-long run on sentences like the first sentence of this post and this one, she will love HIGH ANXIETY!!!!

Mike LL

A thought: a lot of great foreign films have been remade for American audiences (for good or for ill). You could do an original/remake poll. Off of the top of my head, excluding ones I know you've seen: - THE INTOUCHABLES/THE UPSIDE - THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO - LET THE RIGHT ONE IN/LET ME IN - SPOORLOOS/THE VANISHING - RINGU/THE RING - INSOMNIA - LA CAGE AUX FOLLES/THE BIRDCAGE

Matt Rose

I would recommend Volver (2006)

Diane David

I Agree. You have to watch True Romance :-)

Larry Darrell

The Seventh Seal (1957) would actually be pretty cool to watch before Last Action Hero (1993)… and before Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey (1991), if they make it that far.

Larry Darrell

M is fantastic but runs afoul of Cassie’s prohibition against movies with violence against children. I love City of Lost Children. Ron Perlman is great in everything (I’d love to see a reaction to Hellboy) and it would make a nice primer for Dark City.

Just Plain Bob

+1 for Doc Hollywood (1991)… with a supporting cast of Woody Harrelson and Bridget Fonda.

Larry Darrell

Great photos! That's so awesome, I've been through but never TO Charleston, probably not your scene but I've always wanted to visit some of their supposedly haunted sites, I love that stuff lol. For foreign movies, I have to recommend CITY OF GOD, a true story from Brazil. Oh, and PAN'S LABYRINTH, directed by Guillermo Del Toro. Also, super excited about True Romance, love that movie.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

I just checked her letterboxd list and apparently she's seen SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE.

Stick Figure Studios

And Kevin Spacey, fresh off “The Usual Suspects” and “L.A. Confidential.”

Just Plain Bob

You are right. I just checked her list on letterboxd and she has seen that one. I'm surprised but pleased. After I posted my comment, I thought of a few more that I forgot, so I've added them.

Stick Figure Studios

Lots of great foreign film suggestions so far! I would add to the list “Beauty and the Beast” (1946) by the French filmmaker, Jean Cocteau. It’s a surreal, dreamy take on the familiar fairy tale with great sets, costumes and black & white cinematography. I think you’d really enjoy it.

Silver Machine

My favorite foreign films (no particular order, just off of the top of my head): DANGAL RIFIFI RAN ANOTHER ROUND PLAYTIME DAS BOOT GRAND ILLUSION THE RULES OF THE GAME LE SAMOURAI HIGH AND LOW TOKYO STORY BICYCLE THIEVES PICKPOCKET EL AURA THE THREE MUSKETEERS PART 1: D'ARTAGNAN THE THREE MUSKETEERS PART 2: MILADY THE ZONE OF INTEREST TONI ERDMANN A SEPARATION THE INTOUCHABLES DOWNFALL CINEMA PARADISO 8 1/2 LA STRADA RASHOMON Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN

Matt Rose

Messengers (1999) Japanese. The photos are great, glad you had a wonderful time, except the late drive. Although sometimes driving at night when there's little traffic can be enjoyable.

Mac61

Came here to recommend the same thing. For some reason, I was thinking the film was set in Charleston, but it was Savannah. Savannah is only 2 hours down the coast from Charleston and they have similar Old South vibes. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997) also features a young Jude Law.

Larry Darrell

Oh, well then She Loves Me, She Loves Me Not, aka Scary Amelie.

Jeremy Young

She has already reacted to that in a Patreon exclusive reaction.

Mike LL

Foreign Movies: Amelie Life Is Beautiful Let the Right One In (original Swedish version) Slumdog Millionaire *anything by Hayao Miyazaki, but they are fast to hit "copyright" claims*

Adam Doyle

I second Rashomon, Ran, Das Boot, Rififi and Kung Fu Hustle. I thought I saw Pan’s Labyrinth on her list of movies she’s seen, although it’s difficult to imagine the circumstances under which she would have seen it. Otherwise, it would be my favorite on your list. I weep every time I see it.

Just Plain Bob

Very nice photos, Cassie. Foreign Film Recommendations: Nosferatu (1922) Germany Gojira(Godzilla) (1954) Japan Life Is Beautiful (1997) Italy

Mark Vaderr

Glad you had a great vacation. Great pictures. Every year my vacation spot is Garden City Beach. It's a couple miles south of Myrtle Beach.

Stuart Guthrie Jr.

Totally a good point there. I'd like to think that with as much as she's watched in the last few years, a little bit of "film school" might be something she would be interested in. I figured I'd put out the artsy stuff, as the more popular recent ones will get plenty of mentions. :)

Rick Moreno

Like for Train to Busan. That's a horror film even Carly could handle.

Brent Petty

Pleased to see you are opening up to more foreign language films. Here are some of my favorites just off the top of my head that I think you might enjoy. Wild Strawberries The Seventh Seal La Strada La Dolce Vita Bicycle Thieves Play Time M. Hulot's Holiday The 400 Blows The Wild Child Rashomon Ran Dreams Das Boot Aguirre: the Wrath of God Andrei Rublev Rififi Kung Fu Hustle Where is the Friend's House? The Young Girls of Rochefort M Wings of Desire Day for Night Jules & Jim Purple Noon A Man Escaped City of Lost Children Cinema Paradiso Hero

Stick Figure Studios

For foreign films I want to also suggest 400 Blows from France an essential coming of age drama and The Wages Of Fear a high octane road movie

Jacob Wagner

It can be foreign language or October, but Train to Busan is excellent.

Brent Petty

Presuming you mean the Extra Butter Live is on 4/29.

Brent Petty

I'm guessing Cassie won't dig True Romance because it's similar to Pulp Fiction.

Stevan Carter

My recommendations for a foreign movie poll: *Let the Right One In (since there’s no way it wins the poll currently running) *Rififi (one of the all time great heist movies) *Raid: Redemption (a modern martial arts masterpiece) *In Order of Disappearance (great Scandinavian suspense/thriller) *Rogue (Australian thriller) *The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (the original; this movie is so, so great - my favorite on this list)

Just Plain Bob

As much as I like art films I'd say the same thing about most of this list..I didnt see most of these films til film school

Jacob Wagner

How soon do you expect to post the Star Trek TNG season 3? I was wondering since we haven’t seen any since season 2.

Elias Shaikh

I was going to put Yojimbo on my list, but couldn't remember if she's seen it already. Same with Parasite.

Rick Moreno

Foreign language film: Amelie

Jeremy Young

I really really think Cassie would hate and not be able to handle Oldboy. Great movie but I would never recommend it to someone like her.

Stranger2Reality

Love these pictures Movie master Cassie !!

Neil Varma

Dang..some really heavy hitters there

Jacob Wagner

Definitely second Doc Hollywood. Great movie, funny, romantic and touching. Cassie would absolutely love it (if she hasn't already seen it). Also, I never saw Cars, but my understanding is it's a complete rip off of Doc Hollywood.

Stranger2Reality

Spring is alive and well here in Oklahoma!! I'm super excited for True Romance!! It's one of my favorite films of all time!! Foreign Language: Train to Busan

fish_thefilmcollector

Now that you are a "Movie Buff", of course you're going to see elements of movies in the places you go. Great pictures!!

Ron

She said in the now deleted live video today that it will be next week for X3.

Mike LL

Belive it or not, but I will suggest the swedish Show me love aka Fxxxing Åmål from 1998. Elin here to the left agrees, but she is still shy.

Björn Karlsson

My suggestions for a foreign movie poll are Lady Snowblood (1973 Japan) the film Tarantino borrowed heavily from to make Kill Bill and then Yojimbo (1961 Japan) by Akira Kurosawa this film would later be remade as the first film in the Clint Eastwood western Dollars trilogy A Fistful Of Dollars..

Jacob Wagner

March 29th = April 29th I assume. 🤣🤣🤣

Joel Wayne

I'll just repeat my comment here that I hope you watch all 3 remaining Season 3 Star Trek episodes together as a group. You know there were several months separating seasons 3 and 4 of Star Trek, so if you watch the season ender of season 3 and then immediately watch the first episode of season 4, you will be doing something that only a time traveler in 1990 could have done! It is unnatural! It is not meant to be! And the two episodes were meant to be watched in separate sittings, which is why they were produced the way they were! Glad you enjoyed Charlston! That state is just south of my North Carolina, which is a beautiful state also! So excited about what you have coming up! (And I guess I have to watch True Romance, too! LOL)

Mike LL

Glad you had a good time in Charleston, it's a beautiful city. My sister was just there a few weeks back. For foreign films, there's a bunch, but here are some of my top picks: Nosferatu (1922) - Classic German Vampire story Rashomon (1950) - Japanese film about eyewitness unreliability Rififi (1955) - Classic French heist film The Seventh Seal (1957) - Swedish period piece set in medieval times Das Boot (1981) - German submarine film set in WWII Ran (1985) - Kurozawa takes on King Lear Police Story (1985) - Jackie Chan! Three Colors (1993-1994) - Polish/French trilogy of interconnected movies based on the French flag Oldboy (2003) - Tale of revenge served cold.

Rick Moreno

Ip Man (2008)

Andrew Ramos

Children of Paradise is one of my all time favorite foreign films. I highly recommend it. 🙂

Matt

No X-Men: The Last Stand this week?

ROBERT CLARK

True Romance wow that's random i don't know if Cassie is gonna like it especially if she didn't like pulp fiction 🤷‍♂️

Charles Briggs

In the memory of South Carolina, I think I'll suggest something like "Doc Hollywood"

Tech Citizen

Trips like this are awesome, but with family they're even better.

Tom Furze

Charleston looks as wonderful as ever! My foreign film rec: Sweet Bean (2015). It has almost no profile, so probably bad for the channel, but watching it will make your life richer.

Paul Cox

Great photos. Charleston is a great place. Glad you had a good time. Also, I think you have lost a month on the extra butter live, it’s April, not March ....:)

Michael West

Spring is better than Summer, in that it's not too hot! I HATE heatwaves!

JONATHAN REDFERN WILLIAMS

It looks like you guys had a lot of fun. I didn’t know you were in a bike gang. 😃

Brad Enervold

Nice. Shouldn’t it be “pop quiz, hotshot” trivia night though 😉

Alex Ch

Cassie, after your trip to my region, you gotta see “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.” It’s based on a true story set in Savannah, Georgia (which is basically a character in the film). It stars John Cusack and was directed by Clint Eastwood. Great movie based on the book of the same name. Don’t worry, despite the name it’s not scary at all. In fact, the last act is a court room drama.

Just Plain Bob

Welcome to being a true cinephile. Everything will remind you of a movie now.

Jackson Harper

South Carolina. Very beautiful state. Glad y’all enjoyed it.

Tom Furze

Such beautiful photos, Cassie!
