[YT Edit] X-Men (2000)

Hey guys! Here is the YT edit for X-Men, which will premiere later this evening!

[YT Edit] X-Men (2000)

Comments

If you watch The Cowboys, you need to catch John Wayne's last movie - The Shootist. Ron Howard is in this, too (kid from Andy Griffith grew up and became a great director).

W. Miller

For Your Information: The orginal trilogy is X1, X2 and X3. Then it's First Class which tells Erik's and Charles origins. Then Days of Future past combines the two timeliness and acts as a reboot. Then the rest of the younger cast movie continue on. The Wolverine movies are kinda a mess. The 1st one changes a little bit from the X-Men movies and the 2nd is a complete standalone movie that's a hidden gem. Then Logan is the final movie ending of the series, and by far my favorite of them all.

Jacob Antony

Right, Half want to burn down the world while the rest want to be left alone.

Jacob Antony

A Good, John Wayne, Cowboy movie I never heard of until a few years ago. "The Cowboys." Definitely worth a watch. Bruce Dern plays a GREAT bad guy.

Pat Murray

There's a boatload of comments here, so just in case no one else brought it up: Logan / Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) has a strong sense of smell, among other things. That's why he was able to figure out Mystique pretending to be Storm (Halle Berry). You first see him use his sense of smell earlier in the movie, right before he and Rogue were attacked on the road.

Mario

The Graduate (1967) currently has 25 requests at www.popcornrequests.com If you have not requested it there, you can increase the number of requests to 26.

Clay F

Way off subject here, do you guys think Cassie and Carly should react to "the graduate" with Dustin Hoffman? It was Hoffman's big break. I think it's a 60s essential and it's currently free on Amazon prime.

Jeffery Parks

You'll get a lot more backstory on all these characters as the series goes on, especially in First Class. I'm really glad you guys liked this one. The sequel is pretty much universally thought to be even better. I still remember seeing it opening weekend and the crowd was absolutely going crazy, especially after the amazing opening scene. Can't wait to see you guys react to more of these!

I am 65 and collected Marvel since I was a kid. Especially Fantastic Four, Captain America and Thor. I had to sale a lot when I became disabled and had to declare bankruptcy. I don't understand the idiotic thinking at Marvel. When they were basically adapting stories from the comics they were making billions of dollars. Now they are losing money. I have dreamed about a good Fantastic Four movie for many years and now it looks like I will never get it. Just adapt the Galatus Trilogy. If you want to introduce a female Herald do it after the Surfer is condemned to stay on earth in the third movie. And that is not a Female Silver Surfer, just a female herald. Frankie Raye (sp?). I really like the Falcon, but he is not Captain America. Make a good Falcon movie. I would enjoy that a lot.

William Brownlee

After hearing what they are doing to the Surfer, I don't have much hope for anything Marvel.

Mike Lemon

Channing as Gambit would have been a complete fail - and they intended for the movie to be a comedy/romance. Thank goodness he turned down the role in Origins bc of G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, so Taylor was cast instead. Gambit is one of my favs (besides Rogue) - he’s such a badass character- but too bad the Cajun isn’t getting much love.

Rose

I forgot how grounded/serious these movies were

John Sullivan

As someone who has not seen the new Planet of the Ape movies either, I am 100% with Carly. I saw the trailers with Apes on Horseback with guns, and it just strikes me wrong. Also, no one I know is telling me I need to see these movies, so it's hard for me to believe they are worth my time (But I could be wrong! Let me know if I am wrong!)

Robert Haynes

There was a period where Channing Tatum was rumored to play Gambit in a future iteration of the X-Men, but it fell through.

While I agree with Annie519 and others that X-Men Origins Wolverine was not good, the opening montage may be one of the best this side of The Watchmen. If they had told that story — the one the montage details — and worked it toward what happened to Logan that's flashed in X-Men and explored more deeply in X-2, it would've been a far better movie.

Above Average Dave

Actually, Stan Lee has said repeatedly that X-Men had nothing to do with the civil rights movement. That he and artist Jack Kirby were both Jewish and both had served in WWII, the treatment of the Jews by the Germans was foremost in their minds more than anything else. That said, the storylines evolved mostly in the 1970s with the launch of the new muti-ethnic, international team to reflect all sorts of isolation/castigation/ othering of people who are different by society. Conversely, if you are motivated to read issues of Captain America and The Falcon that came out during the 1970s, they are very strongly influenced by the civil rights movement. There is even one scene where Cap theorizes that he may have had colonial ancestors and Sam replies saying "And they probably owned slaves who were some of my ancestors." There were other similarly candid conversations and storylines throughout that run that dealt with race, drug use, poverty, political extremism and several topics that were consistently in the news.

Above Average Dave

I believe in the comics he also uses the metals in the earth to elevate and move, as well as using the planet's magnetic field.

Above Average Dave

Agreed completely. They need to watch X3 just to understand the story continuity for later films, but that movie is not very good. And X-Men Origins: Wolverine is awful, they should just skip it completely. If it was up to me, I'd say do X2, then X3, then The Wolverine, then X-Men First Class, then Days of Future Past. Then they should just finish out with Logan, skipping over Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix, as those movies are quite bad as well.

Other intros of the Xmen to the MCU is the new Deadpool movie which will have Wolverine in the movie as well

Matt Atkinson

My apologies you're right about Fox but X men is Marvel and thus can and will be apart of the MCU once Disney acquired the rights back from Fox. So Disney putting Professor X in the Dr Strange movie is Disney beginning to tie in the Xmen franchise into the greater MCU universe as a whole. Kelsey Grammer as the Beast was in The Marvels and Evan Peters as Quicksilver was in Wandavision as other tie ins to the Xmen begin.

Matt Atkinson

Incorrect. It’s 20th century Fox not Sony and the x-Men movies are NOT apart of the MCU. How Patrick Stewart was in Dr. strange is explained thru the multi verse concept but that was not the same Xavier as these movies.

Stan the Man

Building off this comment, the intent was always to create empathy and open up conversations about how to treat the oppressed outsider. Professor X was based on MLK Jr., while Magneto on Malcolm X. This is why they are friends even while pushing against each other.

Dissonant Bard

X-Men is the same universe as the Avengers and the other MCU movies. Sony owned the rights to them so that is why the MCU hasn't made movies for them yet but that is about to change. Disney reacquired the rights and will now merge them in. Professor X was in Dr. Strange and the multiverse of madness for starters.

Matt Atkinson

Neither is X-Men Origins Wolverine! That's the worst, lol

Annie519

X2 is good, not so much X3.

Pat Murray

As a fan of the comics since the late 1970's (yes, I'm that old), I was excited for this movie. I'd forgotten a few the good parts. The timeline is different from the comics, but that didn't stop me from enjoying it.

Stephen Dias

Regarding X-Men, it is an allegory for BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ people.

Everderp

Magneto has metal lining in his clothing, which is why he is able to fly.

Laura Thornley

Fun fact Ke Huy Quan from Everything Everywhere All at Once was actually a stunt rigger, an assistant fight choreographer and a translator on X-Men (2000) shown in behind the scene videos planning the Wolverine vs mystique fight with Hugh fighting his Stunt Double. I only found out about all of this when he got his Oscar so I imagine there's alot of people who had no idea he worked as a choreographer on films.

LittleGalaxyBoy

I also have the blu ray box set. The first film is definitely the best, but all five are very worthy of being seen. I’m gonna be curious, when Cassie gets around to watching them, to see if she recognizes Armando in Escape and Conquest as Khan from Star Trek.

Just Plain Bob

I agree, but I suspect the thought was "we can't have too many thirst traps in one movie". Which is of course nonsense, even if its not aimed at my demographic.

Laura Thornley

I'm so stoked you're watching these movies. I think they filmed this one right before Lord of the Rings so Ian had to jet over to New Zealand when they finished. Also the guy who played Toad was the bad guy in the Star Wars the Phantom Menace. He was Darth Maul and get's his little Darth Maul moment in this one, when he's fighting Storm and twirls his metal pole.

Morgan A. Colbert

After watching X-Men 97 I doubt they'll screw up the X-Men when Marvel Studios/Animation have just released some of there best work with X-Men 97 that surpasses the original X-Men series and movies. All they have to do is use X-Men 97 as a blueprint for the MCU X-Men and it will be amazing. X-Men also kickstarted Kevin Feige's career as his first Marvel producing job was X-Men (2000) before he became President of Marvel Studios in 2007 and switched his focus on building the MCU. Feige has been trying to introduce the X-Men into the MCU since Iron Man (2008) so I cannot see him allowing the X-Men to fail after so many years. Feige being producer on X-Men 97 also gives me hope as well moving forward that he understands the X-Men so I just cannot see him pumping out lacklustre X-Men content when he's been waiting 24 years for this chance. X-Men 97 feels like Marvel testing out the water on what people want in X-Men content. With the extremely possible reaction to the show I can already see Marvel taking notes on how they can translate these characters and stories into live action by using X-Men 97 as the building blocks if that makes sense. Marvel has no doubt leant from the mistakes of the Fox X-Men movies so I truly believe that the X-Men will be fine.

LittleGalaxyBoy

Cassie worrying about whether it was ok to call mutants “mutants” (a 100% fictional new species), is the most millennial/Gen Z/Canadian thing ever. 😂

Just Plain Bob

Right? The franchise is basically Wolverine and Friends. I still couldn’t believe Taylor Kitsch; that was bad casting.

Rose

So happy you're starting this series! You guys are going to love them :)

Joe George

I remember picking up the graphic novel God Loves, Man Kills (1982) and being shocked at the opening scene..... God Loves, Man Kills Spoilers Below, Amazing Graphic Novel that Inspired X2 (2003) so don't want to spoil the opening of the novel for anyone: SPOILERS BELOW: Where we see two Mutant kids being gunned down. They are later discovered by Magneto who finds them hung up on a swing, each with a sign reading Mutant hanging over their chest. I'm glad the film didn't hold back when it came to these more mature themes and topics. Magneto being a Holocaust Survivor is something I hope they continue to keep as a core part of his backstory, into the MCU and future takes on the character across comics.

LittleGalaxyBoy

yes me too, I saw it on the BBC one night in the 70's too, with the family, it was a memorable watch for sure, very clever story telling and great performances. I got the original movie box set last year, and that one holds up extremely well.

Pat Cecil

I fear they will screw them up. Marvel reminds me of George Lucas and his treatment of his own Star Wars franchise (when he destroyed the negatives to create his “special editions”). He lost sight of what made his creation great. I feel like they’ve done likewise.

Just Plain Bob

One of my fondest memories is the first time I saw the original Planet of the Apes back in the 70s when it aired on TV. It’s an absolute sci-fi classic.

Just Plain Bob

I adore Gambit but I don't think he would've gotten much screen time if he was in the movies with Logan in the picture :( At least us Gambit fans are eating good with X-Men 97 :)

All Characters first Appearances: 6:28 Professor X (Charles Xavier) - Uncanny X-Men #1 (1963) 13:44 Cyclops (Scott Summers) - Uncanny X-Men #1 (1963) 5:55 Marvel Girl (Jean Grey) - Uncanny X-Men #1 (1963) 15:13 Iceman (Bobby Drake) - Uncanny X-Men #1 (1963) 7:20 Magneto (Erik Lehnsherr) - Uncanny X-Men #1 (1963) 12:01 Toad (Mortimer Toynbee) - Uncanny X-Men #4 (1963) Quicksilver (Pietro Maximoff) - Uncanny X-Men #4 (1963) Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff) - Uncanny X-Men #4 (1963) 8:28 Wolverine (Logan) - The Incredible Hulk #180 (1974) 13:40 Storm (Ororo Munroe) - Giant-Size X-Men #1 (1975) 11:17 Sabretooth (Victor Creed) - Iron Fist #14 (1977) 16:08 Henry Gyrich - The Avengers #165 (1977) 16:24 Mystique (Raven Darkhölme) - Ms. Marvel #16 (1978) 13:23 Shadowkat (Kitty Pryde) - X-Men #129 (October, 1979) 5:58 Senator Robert Kelly - X-Men #133 (1980) 5:21 Rogue (Anna Marie) - Avengers Annual #10 (1981) 15:01 Pyro (St. John Allerdyce) - The Uncanny X-Men #141 (1981) 14:56 Jubilee (Jubilation Lee) - The Uncanny X-Men #244 (1989) Wanda & Pietro!!! Toad, Wanda, Pietro, along with Magneto's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants were introduced in Uncanny X-Men #4 (1963). I imagine you heard this from commenters during the Wandavision reactions but both Wanda and Pietro are Mutants in the comics, Children of Magneto. For the MCU, Marvel had to dance around their Mutant origin as Fox owned the movie rights to the characters. Wanda and Pietro are also Avengers in the comics so this created a little loop hole for Marvel to use them in the MCU but they just couldn't reference their Mutant origin or say they were Mutants. Who is... Marvel Girl? Jean was introduced in X-Men #1 (1963) as Marvel Girl a name she'll maintain throughout the 1960s/1970s until the early 1980s. I can't say for sure when the name was dropped but it was around the 80s. Jean's a grown woman by the later comics and these movies so it wouldn't fit calling her a girl when she's in her 30s but maybe Marvel Woman sounds cool? Jean as a much cooler name that I'll not reveal here :) Mystique and Ms. Marvel!!! Mystique making her first appearance in a Ms. Marvel is a surprise but makes sense for events surrounding Mystique, Rogue, and Ms. Marvel in the comics and Animated Series. Ms. Marvel during this time was Carol Danvers who would later become Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers you know from the MCU played by Brie Larson. Wolverine vs Hulk? Yep Wolverine did indeed make his first ever appearance in a Hulk comic. Logan was sent to the Canadian border by the Government to stop the Hulk from crossing, pretty sure Hulk was hunting the villain Wendigo? Could be wrong on that but regardless Wolverine vs Hulk is something I need to see in live action. Henry Gyrich? I actually had no idea that Henry Gyrich was the person in the helicopter with Kelly. Henry was a big deal in the X-Men Animated Series so I'm surprised they revealed he was dead thanks to Mystique taking his identity. Could've used Henry later down the line for future movies but I guess they had other plans.

LittleGalaxyBoy

Cassie, Her answers remind me of what you would answers would be for the same exact questions except for the dog of course. https://youtu.be/y_J8OgZ2CcE?feature=shared

Carly’s Wolverine Claws! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Jim Sarbinoff

The original Planet of the apes is a brilliant movie

Pat Cecil

Hey Carly :)

Pat Cecil

I was always miffed Gambit wasn’t in X-Men. Rogue/Gambit were one of the most popular characters from the comics and 90s animated series. Still enjoyable but so much focus on Logan.

Rose

I love this movie!

Pat Cecil

Almost 25 years ago and better than most of the Marvel movies of the last 5 years. They will be doing new X-Men movies soon and I hope they don't screw them up too much.

William Brownlee

I remember being a little kid and being surprised at how “adult” this felt when I saw it. Maybe the movie is of its time now, but it felt so fresh and new to see a real comic book movie like this. I mean, we were coming off campy stuff like BATMAN AND ROBIN.
