A joy for me the Popcorn Kids reaction to this. My photo is dated but I remember as a teen the growing anticipation of the wonder horse and how it captured the hearts of the entire nation, the Triple Crown so so rare. Few thought he could win the Belmont and he just blew the field away, left them. in the dust of history. Seeing their reaction not knowing the history made me relieve it again, the thrill of it. Thanks Patreon and Popcorn gals. Secretariat was spiritual in way, almost human with his swagger and pride, possibly purposely teasing the other horses the way it ran from behind.

Absolutely. A longer time investment would be the ESPN SportsCentury documentary, here for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lhfi6zOLdK4 "He's going too d@mn fast."

Cassie, if you've never seen it, I would recommend you watch the actual footage from the real Belmont Stakes race that Secretariat won. Honestly it's tough for the film to really do it justice. It's arguably the most lopsided win in sports history: https://youtu.be/vfCMtaNiMDM

While I love Secretariat, I'm always made they ignore Riva Ridge. While Secretariat won the Triple Crown in 1973, Riva Ridge won 2 of the 3 races in 1972, trained by Lucien and jockeyed by Ron. So Secretariat was Penny, Lucien and Ron's second Derby wins. While Secretariat is said to have saved the farm, it was mostly Riva Ridge. While Secretariat's breeding right sold for 6 million, Riva Ridge's sold for 5 million. At the end of 1973, they had a "match race" between the two, with Secretariat winning, but both broke the track record. Secretariat was such a great horse that he overshadowed Riva Ridge and kinda inherited Riva's legacy. Riva Ridge is almost forgotten.

The fate of some of the best racehorses that are sent to stud and have failed as stallions in the U.S. and shipped overseas is tragic. The great racehorses Exceller & Ferdinand - their horrific deaths have inspired the horse rescue movement and the most prominent organization is oldfriendsequine.org. Its founder Michael Blowen created this thoroughbred retirement farm to ensure that thoroughbreds whose racing and breeding careers have ended - among them includes Kentucky Derby winners to horses that have never raced on a track - live the rest of their lives in comfort and dignity. Old Friends is one of the top tourist attractions in Kentucky. It’s definitely on my bucket list.
