Secretariat (2010) - Full Reaction

Comments

I just watched Secrateriat again so fun . I had the amazing luck of seeing this race live on TV. Unless you’re an athlete, or you love sports in some way or horse racing at all, it’s hard to appreciate what that horse did. He was the favorite for the Kentucky derby but not for the triple crown he knew he was too good for the other horses and only ran as fast as he had to . The horse racing experts didn’t think it then , it was only after the Belmont did they realize how great a horse he actually was . To see it live as it was happening was Surreal it was like time is standing still ….people in the fairgrounds, and in the stands were crying all over the place as he pulled away further and further and further… I was even getting choked up at the way that horse ran I was transfixed I couldn’t move watching . It was just otherworldly to see it happen live. Sports Illustrated voted secretariat the athlete of the year No one and I mean no one !!! Could believe what they were watching. I recommend watching the short documentary and actual race on YouTube

I know, I know, I've commented twice already, but just to point out...Sham finished dead last in the Belmont. And ladies, as much as Jack acted like a jerk (a little), he actually was quite supportive for this time period. And just to remind folks how little women were valued at this time (but has nothing to do with this story, btw)...The court case Oregon v. Rideout in 1978 was the first in which someone stood trial for raping his spouse while they lived together. By 1993, marital rape was a crime nationwide. Still, in the 1990s, most states continued to differentiate between the way marital rape and non-marital rape were viewed and treated. Yes, the USA hasn't always been perfect but we do tend to 'bend' toward what is right (eventually). And I'll suggest again...Dreamer (2005) is another great horse racing movie starring Kurt Russell and Dakota Fanning - it'll make you laugh, cry and cheer. Thanks for the fantastic reaction to a fantastic movie. This is why y'all are my favorite movie reactors.

crazyivan

Sorry, I had to leave another comment after watching this reaction (again). Diane Lane was the girlfriend who got punched in Streets of Fire (1984) and Fred Dalton Thompson (Bull Hancock) was an actor before (and after) he served as a United States senator from Tennessee from 1994 to 2003.

crazyivan

I see you've recognized Scott Glenn (Mr. Chenery) from Silverado, and will wager another one of your father's favorites from the 80's was The Right Stuff (1983). Scott Glenn played Alan Shepard (first US man in space)...but it's over 3 hours. Great movie about the space race.

crazyivan

"Let It Ride" is an outstanding hidden gem of a movie. Good Pick.

Clifton Owens

That’s right about Secretariat’s heart. He had a super sized engine!

Catherine LW

Another great underdog sports movie is Miracle about the US hockey team that beat the Russians in the 1980s Olympics called the Miracle On Ice. It's also by Disney. I highly recommend it. After Secretariat died, they conducted what is the same as an autopsy for a horse and found his heart was twice the size of normal horses... basically, Big Red was as close a horse could get to being perfect as a physical specimen.

Sarah H.

There are several documentaries about the horse and Penny that are really good.

Nanette Davis

This is an excellent movie about a fantastic horse. My father has raced horses all my life, and I have heard him talk about Secretariat and Man O' War many times. Secretariat is the track king of Belmont Park. His record of 2:24.00 from 1973 remains the speed record for the Belmont Stakes, and his win of 31 lengths is the most significant margin of victory ever recorded in the race. Apart from setting the world record at the 1973 Triple Crown races, Secretariat was named the American Horse of the Year in 1972 and 1973.

Eddie Perkins

As a diabetic this almost gave me a sugar episode. The smaltz was heavy in this tale, but then it is Hollywood. Still, Secretariat was IMO the greatest horse I've ever seen. All 3 races are available to watch on YouTube and I hope you watch them. Also espn did a wonderful job with his story and is a must watch. Great reaction ladies, as usual.

softshoes

I watched all three races live on tv as a kid. My Dad said there was no horse that could beat Secretariat and he saw Seabiscuit, War Admiral, Citation and Whirlaway when he was young.

Catherine LW

It's not a well known story in the UK and while I was vaguely aware this film existed I was pleasantly surprised. Great movie. Sadly Nelsan Ellis who played Eddie Sweat died age 39 from heart failure in 2017.

Found uploaded version of movie on YT: https://youtu.be/CepWvgJSLxQ?si=X1bcNz1KAjereB7t

I have been waiting a long time for you to watch this movie. So glad Carley watched it with you. I don't know if you noticed, but this is a movie you can show your kids - no bad words, no sex, no violence. The 1973 Belmont Stakes was one of the greatest sporting events of the 20th century. I've heard stories after Secretariat won by 31 lengths, several people in the stands and at home watching on TV wept because of the overwhelming way Secretariat won.

T J

"The Horse Whisperer" 1998 with Redford, great romance. "Let it ride" 1989 with Richard Dreyfuss, a good comedy.

richard wilkinson

I think “Ruffian” with Sam Shepard is another solid horse movie that flies under the radar. She was as important to the horse racing world as Secretariat. His racing career ended in 1973 but the next super horse would be Ruffian in 1974. She was a big dark bay beauty (almost black) and dominant on the track - considered one of the greatest fillies in horse racing history and possibly the greatest as Lucien Laurin once said, “As God is my judge, she might be better than Secretariat.” Ruffian’s legacy lives on in more ways than one.

Rose

My father was a huge horse racing fan. And took my siblings and I to the racetrack a lot when we were kids. Probably something that would be frowned upon these days. But seemed perfectly normal at the time. I still have fond memories of going to the track with my Dad and siblings. Secretariat was a little before my time. But I’m a big fan and have seen all his races. I highly recommend watching the Belmont Stakes on YouTube to see just how dominant he was. Horses start racing at 2 years old. And the Triple Crown races are for three year olds only. That’s what makes it one of the most difficult feats in all of sports. A horse gets one, and only one chance to win a triple crown race. Let alone all of them. There’s no “Get ‘um next year”. Next year, the horse turns 4 years old. And cannot race in any of the Triple Crown races. Because a new batch of 3 year olds come of age and races. Great story! Great movie! And great reaction ladies!

Robert da Spruce

You picked some really good movies for your poll. And when you get reactions from Cassie and Carly like this…you deserve a pat on the back.

Dan M

One if my all time favorites!! You just can’t watch it and not feel great afterwards!! The greatest horse that ever lived! ❤️

Carol Rocha

I cannot wait. Happy birthday March 30, Secretariat!! Thank you guys for watching this. You’re GOING TO LOVE IT

Carol Rocha

Another sports movie to watch is 'We Are Marshall' and/or 'Remember the Titans'

JPDotCom23

You guys gotta watch Dreamer starring Kurt Russell and Dakota Fanning. Another true story based on a race horse and an even unlikelier against all odds story. So heartwarming. You guys will love it. Also, Kurt Russell as a race horse owner? Come on...must watch haha.

shaneth138

You recognize Diane Lane from The Perfect Storm! She plays Mark Wahlburg's girlfriend.

shaneth138

I'm glad you two did this movie. And I had to chuckle at the Sharpay start. lol.

Lawrence Adams

Same🥹

Cole Jennett

Great reaction ladies !!! I would recommend, since you'll seem to be into horse racing, "The Black Stallion - 1979". One of the most beautifully shot movies I have ever seen.

Bill Maurer

It’s crazy that you didn’t recognize John Malkovich (Lucien). The bad guy in “In the Line of Fire” that terrified you.

Michael Lynch

When the gospel music hits during the last turn in the Belmont scene it makes me cry every time, just like when Forrest asks Jenny if little Forrest is smart or slow in Forrest Gump. No matter how many times I see these scenes I cry. Immediate waterfalls.

Jack Burton

I always thought Secretariat knew exactly what he was doing in that last triple crown race. For a horse who had always come from behind to suddenly decide to take the lead and hold it, he must have figured hey, I only held back those other times to make it interesting for the crowd. But this one, I'm gonna show them I could have done this anytime I wanted. I'm gonna leave no doubt that I'm the fastest. BTW, I also echo those who recommend Phar Lap for your viewing. Another underdog horse who became the hero of Australia, although it is hard to find the film. I recently saw it on youtube, however in its entirety.

sharkey197

Good movie. Secretariat was a great horse. Great Reaction Ladies. Now you two are ready for Horse Whisper.

Rick Williams

Dirt track racers who are more athletic that Secretariat (or close-ish). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTmDz5UGmlY

Mike Lemon

All of Secretariat's races are one youtube. They are really igreat.

sharkey197

I was 13 when Secretariat ran this race. I remember the announcer saying, "A middle linebacker could have rode big red that day and still won.

Habman

"Obsessed with Penny!" Both... of the ladies "Just Loved It!" And to this day... Secretariat's records still stand - truly the greatest thoroughbred that ever lived. BTW Cassie, one of Diane Lane's roles you reacted to and really liked a lot, was the girl friend of 'Bobby' (Mark Wahlberg's character) in- 'The Perfect Storm'.

Terry Yelmene

I had good memories of secretariat. While on the subject of sports movie, I highly recommend put "Ice Castles" the original 1978 version on your radar. It's from Rocky era. It was rated as "3 handkerchief tear jerker" Definitely will need a box of tissue.

Tech Citizen

His accent seems odd, but John Malkovich actually lives in Paris when he's not on location for some movie set. On the other hand, James Woods speaks French like a native.

Above Average Dave

This movie certainly provides all the sport movie feelings that a good sport movie can deliver. Don't really buy John Malkovich as a French speaker, but besides that very minor nit pic, the cast of the movie are all excellent. Cassie and Carly were clearly captivated, which always makes for the best reactions! Go Big Red!

MikeLL

Yes! This was the movie I wanted you to watch the most because I knew it was a sure thing! I feel so incredibly lucky you decided to do two from the poll. I was looking for “happy tears” and I found them🥹🥹. Thank you so much!!❤️

Cole Jennett

Amazing right? And I agree about Sham.

Cole Jennett

oh my gosh, your comment just gave me goosebumps, so so amazing!

Cassie

I stayed up til almost 3am watching it! I didn’t care that I had an 8am meeting. And since my 99¢ rental from Prime is good for a while, I may watch it again tonight!

Marja

One of my fave sports/horse movies. I know what’s going to happen and I fall apart each and EVERY time!

Marja

Ill wait and see the YT version of it. This movie is finally lol, one I love. And no offense at all, but been a while on that for me at least. Great true!!!!!!!! story.

Michael J

One of my earliest memories is when I was pretty much still a toddler, my parents hosted a Triple Crown party to see if Secretariat could win the Belmont. And my enduring memory of that is a whole room-ful of adults gathered around a TV set. And as a group, men and women alike, they all started crying. It was like seeing something supernatural, something magic happen on live television.

Chris H.

Never seen this movie, but knew of Secretariat, but not the backstory of the owners, which was interesting - obviously there were likely some liberties taken. There may be a couple of more recent Aussie contenders for the "greatest racehorse" with the names of "Black Caviar" and "Winx". I don't think there are movies about them at the moment, and I am surprised someone hasn't done it. However, there are two other Aussie horseracing movie that I know of, and there maybe more. One is about a similar horse to secretariat named "Phar Lap" from the 1920's and '30s, with a film of the same name that was made in the '80s - it would probably be hard to find these days. The other is "Ride like a Girl" which is true story about the Melbourne Cup ("the race that stops a nation") and a jockey name Michelle Payne, who is played by Theresa Palmer, who would be known from "Hacksaw Ridge".

Mojo One Thousand

"Phar lap" was also know as "Big Red". There is also some contention between Australians and New Zealanders as to whether "Phar Lap" is an Aussie or a Kiwi, as the horse was born in New Zealand, but spend a large portion of it's life in Australia and is where is had a lot of success.

Mojo One Thousand

So goes a good deed in a weary world. In 2010 at the Preakness I bet on a horse called Looking At Lucky end up getting the trifecta and winning six thousand dollars first time I ever won on horse race. Secretariat was a great horse. Now all these horses are kept for there bloodlines. Great reaction Cassie as always. You definitely lifted my spirits. Made me feel a little better. Thank you!

Zachary K. (Swiftie)

Fred Thompson has also been seen as the President of NASCAR, Big John, in Days of Thunder (1990), and as the Flight Director, Ed Trudeau, in Die Hard 2 (1990). Fred Thompson’s first acting role was in 1985, in the film Marie, also starring Sissy Spacek, Jeff Daniels and Morgan Freeman. This was not a hard role for him because he was playing himself. The film was the true story of Marie Ragghianti, former head of the Tennessee Board of Pardons and Paroles, and her and Attorney Thompson’s role in bringing to light the political corruption within. Fred Thompson already had a storied career before acting. Even having a role in the Senate Watergate Hearings.

Larry Darrell

I had never seen this movie before. Historically I heard of Secretariat, but not in great detail. I must say I found myself tense at each race, but that last race was something else. To win by that much, I agree, Super Horse really hits the mark. Thank you so much ladies for watching this.

Tom Furze

I watch the actual Belmont race from 1973 on YouTube at least a few times a year. Just an incredible sports moment. The ESPN mini-doc is worth watching too: https://youtu.be/QtuEoiYiqZw?feature=shared

Marcos

Oh my God I want to watch this right now so bad. I have been asking and asking for this to be watched. Alas, it is 6:20 in the morning and I have to go to work. Dammit.

Michael Lynch

Diane Lane was also Mark Wahlbergs girlfriend in The Perfect Storm.

Brian McGovern

I knew the basics of the Secretariat story, but when I saw the movie, my initial reaction was to feel like they must have taken some creative license at the final race in Belmont, thinking no way a horse could win by that much. So I looked up the race on YouTube and watched the replay of the actual race. If anything, the movie downplayed the degree to which he dominated that race. It's truly the most amazing horse race I've ever seen. The only sad part about that story for me is that Sham was also very truly one of the absolute greatest race horses of all time, but only had the misfortune of being a three year old the same season as Secretariat.

David Collins

told ya, LOL, next selection, the Majestic. ( I think Im on my third year suggesting that one. )

zynjams

I live in Louisville. I can see Churchill Downs from my house. It's impossible to overstate how deeply that horse endeared itself to this city and state. He is the real Shadowfax, the King of all horses.

Nick Thousan

I love this movie so much! Secretariat's story is so phenomenal! I also love Dianne Lane as an actress! This movie shares the top spot for my favorite of her works with a little known, very underrated cult classic called Streets of Fire which I totally recommend!

Kaida171

Big Red still holds the record for all 3 Triple Crown tracks.

Timothy Roberts

Only Secretariat was never really considered an underdog. I was disappointed that they left out his stablemate Riva Ridge who was the real savior of Meadow Stable and turning Sham into some villain. I can’t. Unless you meant Chenery, then yes, the producer focused on Chenery because he said “her’s was the story of the underdog to Secretariat’s great run.”

Rose

Here’s your next movie poll: true sports stories

James UK

The character "Bull" was played by Fred Thompson. He did do commercials. He also was on Law and Order for years, and you saw him in your reaction to The Hunt For Red October as a US Navy admiral. He was also a US Senator for Tennessee. You know John Malkovich as the assassin from In the Line of Fire. The director (Randall Wallace) wrote Braveheart and also wrote and directed We Were Soldiers.

Brent Petty

Secretariat is my favorite racehorse - the greatest racehorse who ever lived - but another big chestnut decades before Secretariat was the compelling and powerful true story about the Australian champ “Phar Lap.” Highly recommend. BTW - there’s a documentary called “Jewels of the Triple Crown” (1989). My dad had the VHS tape and it was one of my favorites things to watch growing up. I fell in love with horses after watching “The Black Stallion” (1979) and the animated “Black Beauty” (1978). The documentary is special and has rare film footage that tells the stories of the 11 horses (at that time - now there are 13 horses) that have won the Triple Crown. The great sports journalist Jim McKay narrates the documentary. The full-length documentary has been uploaded on YouTube. I really wish the film “Secretariat” was more about the horse than the owner, Penny Chenery + family. The music at the end was so random. It actually caught me off guard when I first saw the movie in the theater. The sounds of a horse racing at full speed is already music to my ears and I can’t stop cringing at that moment when the music overpowers everything else.

Rose

I watched the Triple Crown races with my dad in 1973. The Belmont was the greatest sporting event I have ever witnessed.

Dana Regan

I was lucky enough to watch on tv all Secretariat’s triple crown races in 1973. I had never paid attention to horse racing before. Big Red was as big a sports star as any football or baseball player. The entire country was glued to those races. After Secretariat passed away they found his heart weighed 22 lbs compared to the average race horse which was about 10 lbs. He was the greatest race horse and he had a great owner.

Michael and Phyllis Selby

Nothing like an underdog story. 🏇🐎

Zane From Canada

This has Dianne Lane in it right? I would watch her read a phone book. Woah Mumma!
