Forever Young (1992) - Full Reaction

Wow, what a rollercoaster of emotions!! It was tender, heartwarming, and heartbreaking all at the same time. Mel Gibson and Elijah Wood were amazing in their roles and Jamie Lee Curtis was fantastic as always! The story kept us guessing the whole way through. Even though it was bittersweet that Mel and his love didn't get their life together, the ending still felt satisfying in its own way :))

Forever Young (1992) - Full Reaction

That was good. Conspiracy Theory (1997) is another excellent Mel Gibson film you would like.

Eddie Perkins

Always (1989) is a remake of A Guy Named Joe (1943), starring Spencer Tracy, Irene Dunne and Van Johnson, and co-starring Ward Bond, James Gleason, Esther Williams and Lionel Barrymore. This was the film that the parents were watching in Poltergeist (1982), while getting High.

Great reaction! This was a wonderful move. I saw it when it originally came out since I was a Mel Gibson fan, but only one time. It was fun to revisit. A couple more movies that you'll love that have similar vibes to this, although for entirely different reasons. First, Richard Dreyfus (who I am confident you'll see and absolutely adore in Mr. Hollands Opus, soon I hope), John Goodman, Holly Hunter and the late great Audrey Hepburn (her last role) - "Always". It's a somewhat dark romantic comedy about a pilot, no darker than Forever Young though. No spoilers from me, either. Second is "Frequency" with Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel. It's an excellent and very heartwarming somewhat off beat light sci-fi/fantasy adjacent movie, sort of how "Forever Young" might also be considered sci/fi, that also plays on some similar themes. Right up your alley.

Finally got to watch this and it didn’t disappoint. Not that you’ve ever disappointed, mind you. I really enjoyed watching this with you girls. I had held off watching it for the last couple years hoping you’d get to it, and i bet I watch it again soon. I think you kind of get Mel Gibson’s appeal better now😉 I still remember you seeing him at first in Braveheart and not buying in right away😂 So happy you both seemed to enjoy it so much, even with the heartbreaking side of it❤️

This was the reaction I wanted from this movie. It’s been on my wish list for years, so it’s great to finally tick it off. This is a great easy movie, I don’t watch it often but when I do just makes you feel good!

Biggman83

Hello Cassie. There is another film with young Elijah Wood, Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith. It's called "Paradise" from 1991. It's unknown to many. I can highly recommend him to you. A very good performance from all the actors. I hope you check it out sometime. Have fun. And by the way, a great reaction...

Eddie

I can only imagine the kind of senior discounts you get...

Mike Lemon

This was a fun reaction! Thanks Cole, Cassie and Carly. I can relate to a character displaced in time. Just finished my taxes and because years ago my birthday was officially miss entered as from 1800’s, I was again unable to e-file. And if I try to enter my official birthday from the 1800’s, the software claims that is, of course, impossible. I still don’t look a day over 130. Guess I’ll have to go down there again, stand in a really long line, and show them I wasn't part of an army experiment that got misplaced after a chemical fire. As one does. 😊

Steve Holton

Gel Gibson is great in every roll I have seen him in. He is just a great actor. Good movie with nice twists and turns. Great Reaction Cassie and Carly. Keep up the good work. I appreciate what you ladies do for us.

Rick Williams

When was Silverado announced?

Brian Lowery

Another Elijah Wood movie or two from that era. Huck Finn and Radio Flyer

Steve Slayman

A Mel Gibson movie I haven't seen. Enjoyed it, and now I'm pumped for Silverado (hopefully a reaction w/ Carly).

Brent Petty

That was definitely a bittersweet movie. His character was shown when he came to the defense of Claire immediately. He was a consummate gentleman. This type of movie is good to get both brain and heart racing. The dichotomy where joy meets sorrow, hope meets struggle, make for a very cathartic moment.

Tom Furze

So Steve Miner who directed this movie actually directed Friday 13th Part 2. Jason didn't even have his hockey mask yet. Elijah Wood actually is from my hometown.

Zachary K. (Swiftie)

And little Joseph Mazzello, from Jurassic Park. Radio Flyer was another favorite of my childhood. And I’ll add… The War (1994) with Elijah Wood and Kevin Costner.

Larry Darrell

If you want another young "Frodo" movie, check out Radio Flyer (1992). A word of caution- the subject matter may be tough for Cassie, but nothing graphic.

Mike Lemon

When y’all were talking about the song forever Young, I thought you meant the good one by Rod Stewart. Alas you were talking about the other one.

Michael Lynch

Another fantasy/romance movie that came out a year earlier was called "Late for Dinner' Another one about Cryonics. I liked it more than Forever Young. It's a good film, I still watch it every now and then, cause there's good humor in it, its got adventure and drama as well as of course the love story etc.

Ryan Towell

So sad... yet, happily in the end - at the end. The two agreed in the end... it was sweet. (and looked forward to Secretariat)

Terry Yelmene

I liked this movie, because it could be the prequel to either “IDIOCRACY” or “ZOMBIELAND”. IT ALL DEPENDS on "Miles Bennet Dyson”. (The Scientist who got the Secret Formula at the end of the movie.) Will he perfect Hibernation and create the world of IDIOCRACY; or will he CURE death and create the world of ZOMBIELAND.

Uncle Phoenix

Y’all are continuing your journey through my childhood with this one… which was partly the intention with my Trivia List last year. So glad y’all liked it. Many Thanks to Cole for this one. Now, the Songs titled, “Forever Young” (which have nothing to do with this movie.) You girls are thinking of the 1984 Alphaville song, “Forever Young.” I’m sure most younger people who did not come from the 80s were introduced to this song by Napoleon Dynamite (2004). Definitely an 80s Classic, rightly so. https://youtu.be/dH8VEaGiG5Y?si=-PRYjVCbyKD9PVuh However, there was a much more popular song titled “Forever Young,” which came before. Written and performed by Bob Dylan along with his old band, The Band… “Forever Young” appeared in 2 versions on his 1974 Planet Waves album. The first one, a slower paced version, was the last song on Side One of the record. Here is Bob Dylan and The Band performing the song live, during The Band’s 1978 farewell concert film, The Last Waltz, directed by Martin Scorcese. (Notice the drummer, Levon Helm… actor in and narrator of, The Right Stuff (1983). And hopefully one day, Helm will be seen on this Channel in the film, Coal Miner’s Daughter (1980), playing Loretta Lynn’s father.) https://youtu.be/Yt1DAMecaWA?si=WUDYKz4STVUbViKv The second version of the song, from the Planet Waves album, was the first song on Side Two of the record. This one is a little more fast paced. Also, this one is the version that Cassie SHOULD know the best, since it was the Theme Song for the TV Show, Parenthood, for 6 seasons. Bet you didn’t realize, Cassie, that you have heard this Bob Dylan song, at least, approximately 103 times before. https://youtu.be/5wBp_DBNE2I?si=Q6cXOHs3zNiSzY0j And now the honorable mention goes to Rod Stewart. In 1988, Stewart along with 2 band members wrote a song titled, “Forever Young” which was very similar in style and meaning to Bob Dylan’s. Rod Stewart asked for Dylan’s approval and they agreed on sharing the rights to Stewart’s version. It is also a beautiful song. https://youtu.be/mwG6g5boyF4?si=4xon9IDV2oZdETVY Bob Dylan’s, “Forever Young,” is one of my Top Ten, All-Time favorite songs. The lyrics are like a Prayer that you should say to yourself and your loved ones… Everyday. “May God bless and keep you always May your wishes all come true May you always do for others And let others do for you May you build a ladder to the stars And climb on every rung May you stay, Forever Young May you grow up to be righteous May you grow up to be true May you always know the truth And see the light surrounding you May you always be courageous Stand upright and be strong May you stay, Forever Young May your hands always be busy May your feet always be swift May you have a strong foundation When the winds of changes shift May your heart always be joyful May your song always be sung And may you stay, Forever Young”

Larry Darrell

Another movie I remember quite enjoying at the time but I haven’t seen it for years. Of course I couldn’t admit to enjoying it at the time; I had a reputation to protect. 😉

James UK

Walter Goggins did a great job in “JUSTIFIED”.

Uncle Phoenix

He was a talented immigrant who came to America, made a fortune; (As of 2010, the LA Times estimated he had a net worth of $1 Billion.) and then got “Chopped in Half” by his two ex-wives. (His last ex took his Laker’s tickets to soothe the relationship between Mel’s son and her Boyfriend.) That’s about as AMERICAN as one can get.

Uncle Phoenix

Cassie really said it all in the post for this reaction, she summarized all that needs be said about this tender tearjerker. I'm sad that they didn't have their life together, but that ending was a wowser. This movie was a nice twist on the time travel trope.

MikeLL

Not seen this before so looking forward to going it a go. But hope your feeling better Cassie

Dean Holt

I have not seen this movie in ages, but it is one of the few that left a lasting impression on me when I was a child. I think I saw it on TV when I was probably not more than 10 years old, and this may have been the first Mel Gibson movie I ever watched. I remember finding the idea of hibernating for decades and waking up in the future quite fascinating. Gibson was born in the USA, but his family moved to Australia when he was around 10. I think he did have an Aussie accent in his earlier Australian movies, like Mad Max, and it is also notable in his earlier interviews, but not as much as during his roles. However, after he returned to the USA, he switched to a more American accent for his roles and his natural accent also faded, but not entirely.

Gábor Árki

Amazing that the guy at the gate who Mel yelled at was Walton Goggin's, listed in the cast as Walt Goggins. I recognized him instantly. Best known as one of the bad guys in Django and The Hateful Eight, also the bad buy at the bank that Hope interacts with in Antman and The Wasp. Kind of neat that the inside of Nat's jacket lists the city he lives in as San Marcos, just about 30 miles away from where I live. Quite a drive to get from there to Long Beach, where the Los Alamitos Training Base(air field) is. Not sure why they've have The San Marcos Annual Air Show there, haha. And then that lighthouse at the end with the house they built for the movie, was filmed up north of San Francisco.

YodatheHobbit

Hey Daniel is quite Captain America-ish, isn't he? Parts of CA: The First Avenger absolutely reminded me of this movie when I first saw it.

YodatheHobbit

OMG, it is Frodo! It’s been years since I’ve seen this, but it still holds up. Jamie Lee Curtis always plays a great mom. I think I would change the ending though. Perhaps there was a secret government facility with Helen frozen (Harry died as an old man saving her) and government needs to know exactly how Daniel was awakened to save her. Daniel “borrows” an airplane with Nat to go find secret base. Nat repeats what he did easily - no aging side effects - Mr. & Mrs McCormick got to live their whole lives at that house by the lighthouse. Oh, and Nat graduates at the top of his class at the Air Force Academy in Colorado.

Ike

Please check out Mel doing an English accent in The Bounty with Anthony Hopkins.

Arggh! I can’t watch it until at least Sunday.😢

Cole Jennett

I’m so happy you enjoyed this movie Cassie, and I’m really excited to watch along with you later tonight to see your reactions. I think when most people think of Mel Gibson movies, the first ones to come to mind are the action packed hits like the Lethal Weapon franchise, Braveheart (this will always be one of my favorite movies), and The Patriot. But he has so many other movies that demonstrate his range and skill as an actor. This is one of those movies. To me, if a movie brings out multiple emotions from beginning to end, its a good movie. Mel Gibson, once again, proves that he is so good at that. Say what you want about him as a person, but the man can act. And its such a good story!

Dan M

Haha, did. Cassie just give a spoiler. First time watch for me. 😁

Pickupthepieces76

Well if you wanna se a roller coaster of emotions, then I have a perfect suggestion 🫠🤩🥰😍

Björn Karlsson

I watched The Man Without a Face a couple of years ago and I was flabbergasted by the sight of the notoriously anti-Semitic Mel Gibson reciting Shylock's monologue from The Merchant of Venice!

Henry Graham

Mel Gibson I believe is American who was raised in Australia

Scott Souza

It’s been a while since I last saw this movie! “Man Without a Face” was Mel Gibson’s directorial debut and for some reason that movie has stayed with me.

Rose

Looking forward to this!
