Star Trek: The Next Generation (S1 EP 1-2) - Full Reaction

It's begun! I won't spoil too much, but this was fun to watch live with some of you. I'm sure the crew and characters will grow on me but I do really miss my old pals! I'm curious to know what you guys thought of these episodes when you first watched them?

Star Trek: The Next Generation (S1 EP 1-2) - Full Reaction

Point of interest, most of the scripts used for season one were originally written for what was suppose to be a reboot of 'Star Trek' in the 70's, but that never materialized, instead they moved onto the big screen.

Where to start... Having watched everything Star Trek and loving that universe soo much... Wishing we could achieve that 'greatness' in my lifetime... I loved these episodes! During or just after this time a big push for 'Star Trek' came about. Virtual Trek on MSN started and Star Trek conventions started up in earnest. Then the Star Trek Technical manuals came out! I was in heaven! LOL I'm a bit different in that part of the original motto holds great meaning to me: "...explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and civilizations..." This doesn't mean I don't like the 'battle aspect' of the show, but what I didn't like was the turning of the movies towards this so as to appease 'the shareholders' and to draw more people to watch them. Because of this show and everything Star Trek I joined V-Trek lol These two episodes dive right into: "...explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and civilizations..." like few before! Least I forget the encounter with Q! Data and the reference to Pinocchio! LOL Love DATA! We all were impatient for part 2 - one week away!!! These episodes were a great introduction into The Next Generation! "Let's see what's out there. Engauge!"

Like others have said you are not alone in missing the TOS crew, and you only saw a mere 4 original series episodes, just imagine the fans at the time who had seen all the episodes multiple times. At the time the general feeling was you can't have Trek with the original crew and the fact that those first two seasons were weak didn't help. I feel had this show been on network TV (it wasn't as it was one of the first if not the first series made directly for syndication) it would probably have been canceled by the end of season 1 or 2. But season 3 saw improvements everywhere, visual effects, uniforms but most importantly the writing which paid more attention to characters instead of plots, not that the plots were not still great. Then a certain episode happened in season 3 and everyone suddenly took note, and the season ended with a powerhouse that had people waiting for the 4th season with unheard of desire. TNG was now on its way to being regarded as the gold standard. And the greatness not just of Q but of the Q / Picard relationship added to the legend. With all that being said many, including myself, believe the next series Deep Space Nine is the best Trek series and needs to be seen. However in its third season and lasting until the series ended its 7 year run it developed into a massive arc with one central story line. It still had stand alone episodes but many, many more than 4 episodes per season would need to be viewed other wise you can't follow it and understand was is going on, but it is well worth it. It also had its own standout and beloved recurring guest stars.
