Lincoln (2012) - Full Reaction

Sorry this one is so late! It's been crazy over here! So as someone who grew up in Canada, it's been really fun watching these "presidents day" movies. I knew a bit of some of the stories, but these movies really help solidify them in my mind. I've learned so much over the past few weeks in watching these movies, this one especially powerful!

Lincoln (2012) - Full Reaction

Comments

Enjoyed my rewatch of this movie that I love and your reaction on this Christmas Day.

Clay F

Too PC? Lol ridiculous.

Ben Schwartz

I had to stop watching. It is just too pc for my tastes. The Gore Vidal miniseries with Sam Waterston is still the best Lincoln performance I've seen. The novel is outstanding, too. But maybe start with some of Bruce Catton's wonderful history works on the Civil War.

thansen

After watching "Lincoln", you should take a look at "Manhunt" on Apple +. It's about the search for John Wilkes Booth

Bill Maurer

Finally got around this reaction. Saw it once when it came out, but for whatever reason it didn't resonate that much with me at the time (though the DDL performance certainly did). Having now watched again, it was fantastic. One of the least Spielberg-ian of Spielberg's films, but in a good way. Boy I hope Daniel Day Lewis is compelled to another movie at some point. What a phenomenal actor.

SeanATX

There are few really good good Civil War movies. This is one of them. Some others you should watch are Gettysburg, a wonderful movie for around the 4th of July about the pivotal battle, Gods and Generals, a movie about General Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson and Gone with the Wind, the highest grossing movie of all time when adjusted for inflation. I would love to see you do reactions to Ken Burns and his series. There's many but I personally would start with the Civil War by Ken Burns. Baseball is also excellent but realistically all his documentaries are top notch.

Matt Atkinson

Hey Cass, loved the reaction as always. One small thing: you mentioned checking out the Last of the Mohicans, but unfortunately that video hasn't been available for a long time.

Cade

So he is basically the Creeper (Jeepers Creepers)? I always suspected it.

Mike Lemon

Day Day Lewis hibernate for 10 years and make 1 movie to win all awards

Russell Teo

Ralph Bellamy - a name very few will recognize; he started his career in the 1930s. Cassie, you'll remember him as one of the old brothers in Trading Places. His last role was in 1990 Pretty Woman...he died the next year at 87. An excellent film you and Carly would enjoy, which has been recommended before by others is "His Gril Friday" staring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russelle...Ralph plays the boyfriend of Rosalind's character. All of this is a long about way of recommending another president's film... "Sunrise at Campobello" came out in 1960 so Ralph is not going to be as old as in Trading Places. He portrays a small part of Franklin Roosevelt's life. True fact Franklin was completely paralyzed from the waist down. Though there are a few pictures of him walking...how could that be. Franklin when he was younger had a very strong upper body. He'd place all his weight on another strong person's forearm, and the little momentum of that lead person moving was enough to make it appear that Franklin was also walking. There were plenty of people in his day who died from Polio, entered school with one leg much shorter than the other, or kids forced to live with an Iron Lung, because their muscles were too weak to help them breath. Another interesting fact, his wife Elenore, was already a Roosevelt before she married Franklin, they were cousins. Her uncle was the president of the United States - Teddy.

John Liebling

Mr. Smith and To Kill a Mockingbird are both great films. Two that both Cassie and Carly would appreciate. Because of Lincoln's unusual height that's why when he debated Senator Stephen A Douglas - Stephen was referred to as the little Giant...he stood a full foot shorter compared to Lincoln. Many women in those days were under five feet.

John Liebling

I read about his sons after this. They mentioned Willie in the movie, I thought he was much older when he died, but only 11. They also had another son Eddie who died when he was four! I too, as a mother might have gone mad. Poor Tad too, wow it is so humbling to think of the things that could have killed you back then and thankful for modern medicine

Cassie

oh man that is so heartbreaking. She was present and right next to him right? So tragic

Cassie

thank you so much for saying that!

Cassie

hahaha i see what you did there, it did feel SO real

Cassie

wow, i did not know that, a year of prep? wow

Cassie

wow thanks for the link, incredible!

Cassie

Fun fact: btw Hal Holbrook was not only was in this movie but he was deep Throat in All the presidents man

MatthewBrown74m

Technically he's Irish.

Stick Figure Studios

Few reactions... could be considered... important. Cassie, as an American, this one... is. Thank You.

Terry Yelmene

Daniel Day-Lewis is 6′ 2″, and Abraham Lincoln was 6′ 4″, making him the tallest U.S. president ever. Some movies I think you would like. Mr. Smith Goes To Washington (1939). I know you know the story, but I don't know if you have ever seen the movie "To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)" Also, "Gone with the Wind (1939)" was voted the favorite film of America. It is regarded as one of the greatest films of all time, and in 1989, it became one of the twenty-five inaugural films selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.

Eddie Perkins

You need to ensure your upload advertising matches what you’ve actually uploaded. You’re way behind in this, Silver Lining Playbook, Masters of the air? Hat are you doing? If you need a project manager; I’m certified and can do it for free.

Brandon Dague

Gotta love Steven Spielberg. If you are ready for more historically based Spielberg, I suggest Amistad and Bridge of Spies. Both are excellent. If you want more Daniel Day-Lewis you might try There Will Be Blood, In the Name of the Father, or Age of Innocence. Also, though he is not the lead in it, I highly recommend Room with a View which stars Julian Fellows, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Simon Callow, Helena Bonham Carter, and Daniel Day-Lewis.

Tinkerbell

I'd like to see some documentary reactions. Maybe some Errol Morris and Werner Herzog.

Stick Figure Studios

Cassie already sets herself apart from other reactors with her heart and sincerity. I wonder if she'd like to diversify even more. Nobody reacts to documentaries...Cassie I wonder if that is the next step for you. Ken Burns has a huge list of great documentaries including the Civil War. Much of what he's produced is very educational. Some not yet appropriate for very young kids, such as your kids so far. When your boys and daughter are in their teens, they'll be able to handle the carnage of the Civil War. Something to think about. Truth is you'll never run out of great musicals, classic rom-coms, and classic dramas to show case on your platform. I give you five stars for the great reactions which always adds to the quality of your PIB community. Hoping you and your family have a healthier 2024 in the coming months.

John Liebling

Gods and Generals (2003), starring Stephen Lang, Robert Duvall and Jeff Daniels.

Larry Darrell

You are now ready for 'Amistad', also, a Steven Spielberg film. Anthony Hopkins' final oration is one of thee best movie dialogues I've had the pleasure of watching.

JPDotCom23

Such an incredible performance by Daniel Day-Lewis, it's so strange to think that, while a very good actor in his own right, this was almost Liam Neeson in this role.

JPDotCom23

Daniel Day Lewis is so incredible. I mean he's just a British actor. But he is so good at transforming himself into any character, no matter the dialect, accent, tone of his voice. He's just so good.

Ryan Towell

These two films make great companion pieces.

Stick Figure Studios

Unfortunately, only one son had a long life. Little Tad died when he was 18. He had a speech defect, and the other children were cruel calling him stuttering Tad. Only Robert lived a long life, died when he was 82. He did not attend Ford's Theatre, but he was near the WH when his father was murdered. He became Secretary of War under President Garfield, who was assassinated in 1881. In 1901 Robert was in attendance at the Buffalo New York's World's Fair when William Mickinley was assassinated. From that point forward he always said no to any invitation from a President to attend a WH function. He was afraid he was bad luck. He died in 1926, three years before the Stock Market crashed. He was 60 when the Wright Brothers flew and was 74 when WWI came to an end in 1918.

John Liebling

I hope Cassie gives 1776 and Yankee Doodle Dandy a chance this coming July 4.

John Liebling

Who shot him? John Wilkes Booth. Booth was shot 12 days later, through the neck and slowly suffocated. His last words were, "Useless. Useless." when he attempted to raise his arms. Booth conspired to murder other members of Lincoln's cabinet. The man who would eventually purchase Alaska from Russia two years latter, he was Seward and he was stabbed that night, but survived his wounds. Only Lincoln had the heart and intellectual brilliance to conduct the war to victory and get the 13th amendment passed. He was only 56 when he was shot. Mary Todd went nuts, and it was Robert who placed her in a mental institution.

John Liebling

TY. I think I got what I needed. Dummy me was trying to watch it on Patreon while I had it pulled up on Amazon prime. All on my iPhone. Like Picture in Picture. But I think now that what I need to do is pull the Amazon movie up on my tv and watch along with her on Patreon. Although it would be nice to have the ability to see both on my iPhone. I know it’s small. But things in my life are so that my iPhone is all that I have sometimes. 😏 Thank you for your help. If you have any suggestions on that I would be happy to hear them. Maybe I just need to invest in an iPad. ? Idk.

Carol Rocha

Another classic that Ieads up to this film is Amistad. It predates the Civil War by about 20 years, but it is definitely one of the impetuses that lead to it. Anyway, it's a historical drama, it's based on a true story, it's a Speilberg directed film... I mean, it just checks so many boxes for you. It could also be a late entry for Black History Month, and it loosely fits into Presidents Month too. You would love it.

Aaron Mann

My goodness, what a great a movie and fantastic reaction. I thoroughly salute you because you were easily able to follow the complicated constitutional issues Lincoln faced, and you also emotionally carried the same sense of urgency, empathy and understanding as any history scholar - perhaps a credit to Spielberg’s usual masterful direction also. This reaction is going on my list as one of the Top 5 you’ve ever done and watched! [It’s also another epic performance by DDL that brought my favorite president to life] An EXCELLENT end to Popcorn POTUS Week! Thanks.

Ike

let me count... I've seen maybe 20 on that list.

Mannygogou

Also “Glory” from 1989.

REDR58

Gandhi is incredible.

"The ballot is stronger than the bullet" Abraham Lincoln "That's why I say it's the ballot or the bullet. It's liberty or it's death. It's freedom for everybody or freedom for nobody" Malcolm X

Zachary K. (Swiftie)

A marvelous movie with a terrific cast (Tommy Lee Jones, Sally Field, Joseph Gordon Levitt, James Spader, Hal Holbrook, Adam Driver, etc) and a stunning performance by our greatest living actor Daniel Day-Lewis. So glad you got a chance to watch it. Even more glad that you loved it. Just to recap now, these are the films directed by Steven Spielberg that you have watched for the channel. Jaws Raiders of the Lost Ark E.T. Indiana Jones & Temple of Doom Indiana Jones & Last Crusade Jurassic Park Hook Schindler's List The Lost World Saving Private Ryan Minority Report War Horse Indiana Jones & Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Lincoln Here are the ones you still need to see* Duel The Sugarland Express Close Encounters of the Third Kind The Color Purple Empire of the Sun Always Amistad Munich War of the Worlds The Terminal A.I. Bridge of Spies The Adventures of TinTin The Post Ready Player One The Fabelmans And here are the ones you really don't need to see 1941 The BFG *Excluding Catch Me If You Can and West Side Story which I understand You've already watched outside of the channel

Stick Figure Studios

She will love MR SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON.

Stick Figure Studios

Great Reaction Cassie. I like how greatly you felt this movie. How you make me feel the movie also. It was a great movie which I would have liked even if I watched it without watching it along with your reaction. But, watching it for the first time with your reaction enhanced my experience. Your strong emotions helped me to feel it even deeper than I would have. That's what's so special about watching a movie with you. Thank you.

Rick Williams

Whenever I try to “sell” people on this film who haven’t seen it, I always say: “it stars David Strathairn, Tommy Lee Jones, Sally Fields, Abraham Lincoln, James Spader, Hal Holbrook, Joseph Gordon Levit….”

Eric Galdes

I'll probably have some more to add in regards to this movie later, but all I could think watching this reaction just now was that you need to see Gandhi (1982). Like girl, you would love that movie, and all the messages behind it. Just so many sorta similarities going through my head to this movie and Gandhi. Highly, highly recommend to put that one on the shortlist. You are familiar with the main star, Ben Kingsley, and you are familiar with the director, Richard Attenborough.

Astraeos

This cassie is one of my favorite reactions now I am glad you loved it ❤️

MatthewBrown74m

Both excellent, especially Good Night and Good Luck (11 requests at poppcornrequests.com). Bridge of Spies has 14 requests.

Clay F

Another good political movie, not this era, Good Night and Good Luck along with Bridge of Spies.

CG Shunk

Cassie you probably didn’t recognize him, but one of the soldiers in the beginning who starts to recite the Gettysburg Address is Lukas Haas who played the little boy in “Witness” which you watched on the channel here last year.

REDR58

A Room With A View, high class chick flick and one of Daniel Day Lewis’ early stand out roles.

Thomas Thompson

The tacit deal during the creation of the US Constitution - which is a magnificent document of compromise - was the idea that if a state no longer wanted to remain in the union, they could withdraw. The delegates thought this was so obvious that they didn't even bother to codify it in the document. The representatives from New York and the New England states were very vocal in this regard (so much so that New York was not one of the original ratifiers of the Constitution). The feelings lingered to the point where, just before the War of 1812, the New England states were seriously considering pulling out of the union and looking to form their own confederation or perhaps joining with Atlantic Canada to form a new nation.

Above Average Dave

Cassie, if you’re looking for another great film involving politics (but which is apolitical), try “Mr. Smith Goes To Washington.” It stars James Stewart and is absolutely fantastic.

Just Plain Bob

Cassie, another excellent Daniel Day Lewis movie is My Left Foot he won one of his 3 Oscars for that movie. He is the only actor to win 3 Oscars for Best Leading Actor

Tara

3 Oscars in just 6 nominations. By comparison, Nicholson has 3 Oscars and 12 nominations.

Brent Petty

I remember when my kids were that age. A tough job. Rewarding but demanding. I also got sick (e.g., colds) more.

Clay F

"The dean of the Lincoln-haters is Thomas DiLorenzo." https://www.thedailybeast.com/the-rancid-abraham-lincolnhaters-of-the-libertarian-right

Clay F

Daniel Day-Lewis went away for a year to find "Lincoln's Voice." Reading every book, note, diary, correspondence that he could get his hands on to find the voice. In the movie, we're not hearing Daniel Day Lewis play Abraham Lincoln. We're hearing Lincoln. That soft, tired, and weary voice is Abraham Lincoln's voice. So incredible. Definitely deserved this Oscar win.

Zane From Canada

What a heartfelt reaction. I'm amazed at how moved you can be . . . by history! I'm also struck at how different people seemed to be back then. You could argue at how less enlightened they were from us, although I wonder how much that is true, but they also were more well spoken, eloquent and better educated than the average person of today. I know this is true as of 100 years ago. The average elementary school kid of today would fail miserably at the average school test of 1924! For some reason, after this reaction, I want you to watch MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON (James Stewart in a Frank Capra directed gem), because of the depiction of politics and the Senate. And SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT for a fun time with a young Sally Fields. Both movies very different from this one!

MikeLL

Another movie on or about the Civil War you should add to your watchlist is "Gettysburg". A movie on the pivotal battle of the War and a turning point for the Union Army. Avoid the extended version, too many speeches and the regular movie will be more than enough Thanks and hope you feel better soon

During the dream sequence early on in the movie where Lincoln is alone, standing on the deck of a ship that’s moving quickly, he is onboard the USS Monitor, the first ironclad ship built for used by the US Navy: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Monitor Here is how contemporary Washington and other places were recreated for the movie: https://www.artofvfx.com/lincoln-ben-morris-superviseur-vfx-framestore/

Strangely apt that Booth yelled "Sic Semper Tyranus" on the stage after killing Lincoln. Though it is the motto of The Commonwealth of Virginia, it was originally made famous as what Brutus yelled after killing Julius Ceaser. Just as for those ancient conspirators, assassinations rarely yield intended results. One martyrs the victim, and the backlash more often than not, detracts from the conspirator’s goals. Booth should’ve heeded the rest of Brutus’ story, where Mark Antony easily turned the Roman people against the conspirators and over the centuries people were happy to associate his name with “Brute.” Someone dull, stupid, and violent.

Steve Holton

is this your first time trying a watch a long? We can help, you can do a split screen or two devices and just press play when i do!

Hope you are feeling better, Cassie. There are times when I watch one of your reactions and think, "She's a mom with three young kids. How can she even find 2-3 hours in her day!?" (not to mention the prep, post-production and the care and feeding of your Patreon Humans and social feeds). Meanwhile, we're out here like, "Hey, when are you going to watch...?" All is to say, you and Ben are appreciated and we know what this takes, even if we seem to forget sometimes. Cheers and God bless!

Above Average Dave

Robert Lincoln was also present at the assassinations of two more presidents in his lifetime. He was traveling with President Garfield when he was shot at a train station in 1881, and he was giving a speech at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, NY fifty feet away from where President McKinley was shot in 1901. He begged off opportunities to meet presidents after that. “There seems to be a certain fatality to presidential functions when I am present” was how he explained it.

Brian Harris

Now you gotta watch Abraham Lincoln Vampire hunter to get the real story of Lincoln.

Alex Gorell

I am so happy that you watched this masterpiece of a film. I hope you get it on DVD or Blu-ray! The bonus features and behind the scenes bits are fascinating. I would also greatly encourage you to watch again soon with Carly as she needs to see it too! For me it is Spielberg's best movie - every bit as good as his Schindler's List! Thank you again for watching this when so many reactors don't!

Lamar Savage

Well, your reaction to this (one of my favorite movies) did not disappoint! I was very impressed how you stayed with the subtle and nuanced discussions/debates through out the film. Well done, and thanks so much for adding this to POTUS month.

Roger Hagerty

Edwin Booth, the brother of John Wilkes Booth, saved Robert Lincoln from being run over by a train car a few months before the assassination.

Ben Livingstone

Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theatre during a performance of a play called Our American Cousin. You think we live in strange times? Here’s how weird that time was: Booth was a famous actor of the era - it would be like if Leonardo DiCaprio killed the president. He did it in front of a full theatre. Sneaked into the presidential box, shot Lincoln in the head (he was seated right next to poor Mrs. Lincoln at the time), grappled with an Army officer who attempted to disarm him, then LEAPED FROM THE BALCONY sixteen feet down to the stage, broke his leg, shouted “Sic Semper Tyranus” (Latin for “thus always to tyrants”), and booked it out the back door. Truly one of the wildest moments in American history. Booth was caught and gunned down a few days later. It turned out it was all part of a conspiracy to decapitate the Union and restart the war, but it failed because Booth’s co-conspirators, who were supposed to kill the Vice President and the Secretary of State while Booth was killing Lincoln, got cold feet. I often think there’s a pretty good movie in Booth’s story. The man was deranged and violent, but he certainly didn’t lack for big dreams.

Brian Harris

Maybe I’m being biased but it has to be said: Daniel Day-Lewis must be one of the greatest actors to ever grace the screen; this earned him a well-deserved third Oscar, and he’s also the only man to win 3x in the leading category!

JL_83

I know its going to be a good day when I open my eyes from a good night’s sleep, the sun is shining bright, and I see a notification on my phone that this reaction is now available to enjoy. Can’t wait to watch this over the weekend!

Dan M

Help…..I rented this video on Amazon prime to watch along with Cassie in the Patreon app. Obviously that won’t work or am I missing something? TIA

Carol Rocha

The President is executive branch, not legislative branch, and thus typically does not speak in the House of Representatives. (The President does give a State of the Union Speech once per year on Capitol Hill.) Excellent movie and reaction. “I am the President of the United States, clothed in immense power.” Daniel Day-Lewis (Oscar for portrayal of Lincoln well deserved) transformed himself into Lincoln (as he did with his characters in Gangs of New York and Phantom Thread -- as you noted). I liked your outro. I noticed the guy from Chernobyl. He did well portraying Grant. Grant was a key in the North winning the war. I also noticed Lukas Haas (the kid in Witness) as a white soldier talking to Lincoln early in the movie. John Wilkes Booth (a confederate/southern sympathizer who grew up in Maryland) assassinated (shot) Lincoln. Booth thought he would be considered a hero by many, but instead was generally despised. You recently have had much content right up my alley = the four President movies, Silver Linings Playbook, etc.
