Silver Linings Playbook (2012) - Full Reaction

Sorry for the delay this week! This definitely wasn't the conventional, romantic movie but I knew I was watching something special. The performances were amazing. I love how it felt real life and shocking at the same time. It's one I can't stop thinking about! Kill Bill 2 coming tomorrow! Love you all!

Silver Linings Playbook (2012) - Full Reaction

Comments

I am so thankful that I watched this with you. I enjoy so much you being you. YET being open to everyone else being everyone else. I don't know if you know how rare that is. I love watching you watching "your kind of movie", but what has kept me here is how open and respectful of things and people outside of your zone. The way you summed up your reaction was Pitch Perfect!: "I'm not sure how accurate that was at looking a people with bipolar or OCD or other mental issues, but it opened my eyes to it. I loved the line [by Pat], 'What if people like me and Danny and Tiffany see something that you guys don't.' We all have our own crazy and our own issues and everyone is struggling." I also appreciate how you picked up on how special a moment it was for Pat's mom to watch him dance... the actress was amazing, but I think maybe that shot in particular was important for the director, David O. Russel, to nail because his real-life son struggles with autism and mood disorders, and I think in that shot it was him looking onto his son with all the love of any father. Like Temple Grandin said at the end of the Biographical Picture about her, "We are Different; not Less-Than!" (Do put that Emmy winning film on you list!...) Thank you for seeing these characters' difficulties for what they are... things that make them Different not Less Than.

Brad Lowry

I gotta say if you like David O'Russsell you should see "I ❤️ Huckabees"; if you haven't already. One of his best.

Doc Savage

This was a lot better than I thought it would be. I could relate to a lot of this. My father's bipolar, and our whole family are compulsive gamblers. The movie Rounders (1998) with Matt Damon and Edward Norton is excellent now that I'm thinking about gambling.

Eddie Perkins

The best David O'Russell movie is Three Kings with George Clooney. I also really liked Amsterdam, but that's a very Marmite movie. You either love it or hate it.

Odd Thomas

This movie makes me wish I could meet a girl as messed up as me and we could fall in love.

YodatheHobbit

Little Miss Sunshine? Big Labowski? Ya Cassie... I see it! Just off enough... to be a bit too real. It was real enough... Jen won the Oscar for this one.

Terry Yelmene

I watch the patron full-length versions and the YouTube Versions of all the films Cassie reacts to. Her ability to understand and share her heartfelt feelings and empathy for characters, love, and sensitivity to life's problems makes me enjoy all the movies I've seen in a fresh new way. Great Job, Bright Angel Cassie.

Clifton Owens

I can think of the 3 David O’Russell’s and Serena, what’s the 5th?

Cole Jennett

It's a great film and the acting was superb. I loved your reaction and your thoughts at the end. It is a film that makes you think and does have a "realness" to it. If you follow sports at all, this film really rings true with all of the superstitions and crazy fan bases. But the real hero here was the love story between Pat and Tiffany. Excelsior baby!

Phillip Bates

Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence have actually starred in 5 movies together.

Shawn Kildal

It's hard listening to Stevie Wonder's song My Cherie Amour without thinking about this movie.

Shawn Kildal

Being a diehard Cowboys fan, it's tough for me to love this movie. And yet I do.

Shawn Kildal

Personally I'm the same in that I had their characters at where she seems 25 sh in this and I had cooper at early 30s. Strangely though I remember seeing American hustle in the theaters and in that movie I kind of bumped against it. I'm not sure why maybe it's the fashions where she seemed too young for him for some reason in my head. I enjoyed that movie as well but I just remember thinking they're ages were pretty wide apart in that one. Stop being said I thought they were excellent in the roles

Canadianant

Agreed. Love the new set.

Uncle Phoenix

My late mum pretty much go thru this in my family every day. Dad, younger brother & me all have almost same issues

Russell Teo

Still find it hard to believe that Jennifer Lawrence was barely 21 when they filmed this. Cooper would have been nearly 37. She plays so much older in this, yet she plays younger in Hunger Games which she filmed just prior. Katniss was only supposed to be like 16, but Tiffany easily seems mid to late 20’s. In the book she was supposed to be in her 30’s but I’m so glad they changed it for her.

Cole Jennett

"Goodnight Moon."

Brent Petty

No doubt. Philly fans booed Santa Claus, after all. :)

Brent Petty

This is why I’m a patreon member. Cinema changes how you think about life about hope and loss and about your place in the world and sometimes it helps to give you hope without the sugarcoating.

Thomas Thompson

That movie was crazy. But, it was real. That is life. Life is crazy. I liked it. It was my first time watching it and I didn't know if I wanted to watch it. I ended up watching it because Cassie watched it and I said why not. And I liked it. Thanks for getting me to watch it Cassie. You are the best.

Rick Williams

Cassie: (Laughing) "This is not funny." If you can't laugh, then you will actually go insane. There's always time for laughter. It's the Best Medicine, it Heals Wounds and it Brightens up the Darkness. The Next Best Medicine, is Music. The list of directors who do popular music in films very well is not a long one. Tarantino is at the top, and very close behind is David O. Russell. There is something for every mood in this film, which is fitting. From Led Zeppelin, to Stevie Wonder, to Johnny Mathis, to Dave Brubeck. My favorite highlights... "Hey Big Brother" by Rare Earth... Motown's first majorly successful All-White Band, combining the Motown R&B/Funk with Rock 'n' Roll. If their music doesn't lift your Spirits, then there might be something wrong with your ears. But don't worry... I'm sure it can be fixed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_EdveSn6EE Two other Soundtrack favorites of Rare Earth's I know everyone should of heard before, from other films... "I Just Want to Celebrate" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ouNWSiYn6w "Get Ready" (originally by Motown's own, The Temptations) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaWdw8wK7Gk Back to Silver Lining's Playbook... "Girl from the North Country" by Bob Dylan... originally from his 1963, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan album. Re-Recorded as a duet with Johnny Cash in 1969, for Dylan's Nashville Skyline album. Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash do not have the Prettiest voices, but that doesn't mean they aren't Beautiful. Put them together, and it's a Musical Romance for the Ages. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgovvJVgopk Lastly... a Challenge for Cassie's Musical Ear. (Something I know she won't do, but I'm having fun anyways :-). What song appears in Silver Lining's Playbook (2012) and Kill Bill Vol.2 (2004)? Hint: The versions of the song are different, by different artists, but sung by the same person. They also sound the same, too. And of Course, Anyone can play if they want to. ;-)

Larry Darrell

Remember how much Cassie loved Kevin Klein in "DAVE”. He was so Tender. Wouldn’t Cass love Kevin Klein in “SILVERADO”. A fun Western with Kevin Costner and Danny Glover.

Uncle Phoenix

That one is always fun. Glad you enjoyed. Love how they depicted tailgating as accurately as they did, which on some teams like the Eagles might be actual crazy

Omar

I’m so thankful you enjoyed this one! I was so nervous, lol. Probably the most excited I’ve been for a reaction since Braveheart. This definitely would have been on my trivia list!

Cole Jennett

Such a great reaction and an unconventional movie. Some of my favorite quotes by Cassie: "Cassie had seven oranges." (I want to hear the rest of that math question!) "We are all a little crazy, aren't we?" (Or did I imagine Cassie saying that? It is such a perfect quote for this movie.) "I can't take this kind of pressure!" (Ha ha ha!) This movie seemed to be the kind of movie where it was all improvised. I'll have to look that up and see if it is true, but I seem to be able to spot that nowadays. Just like I've always been very good at spotting lip syncing. (Hint, if they are performing for TV, singers are almost always lip syncing.)

MikeLL

I remember watching this in the theater. Wow that was a long time ago. Long ago in terms of that it was a different world from today. And tomorrow we can look forward to A.I. 😄

Mannygogou

Decidedly not a romance/rom com? I think that’s up for debate. Decidedly? By whom?😂

Cole Jennett

I'm all in on Out of Sight. That's a really good one.

Brent Petty

Great movie, Cassie, but decidedly not a romance/rom com. I know you've received a ton of recs on this, but if you need a not seen RomCom/or pure Romance breaks from some of the suggestions in the next few months, here are a few quick recommendations. The romance recommendations are less formulaic than, say, You've Got Mail or City of Angels. MOONSTRUCK DOC HOLLYWOOD THE SECRET OF MY SUCCESS TIN CUP SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE HIS GIRL FRIDAY THE ILLUSIONIST (Romance, not RomCom) OUT OF SIGHT (Romance - and smiles - and crime solving) TO CATCH A THIEF (Romance - and smiles - and crime solving) THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR (1999 - Romance and crime solving) THE ENGLISH PATIENT (Romance) OUT OF AFRICA (Romance) THE HORSE WHISPERER (Romance) ALWAYS (Steven Speilberg/Holly Hunter version - Romance) THE PAINTED VEIL (Romance) A ROOM WITH A VIEW (Romance) Cheers! Dave

Above Average Dave

Great movie and great reaction. An acting tour de force in this one. Anxiety levels through the roof watching it but with just the Right touch of romantic comedy ending. Hard not to fall in love with the characters in this movie.

Canadianant

This is perhaps my favorite romantic movie - I’ll tell you why. There are no perfect characters in this movie. No one is glammed up to be magnificently beautiful or over-the-top appealing. The connective tissues between every character is authentic and traceable. You find yourself secretly cheering for Pat and Tiffany to get together - not because they are gorgeously compatible; not because they deserve each other; not to chase some serendipitous breadcrumb left behind in Act I - but because they haphazardly displayed a need for each others’ company and the potential of that, coupled with genuine love and affection, makes “Happily Every After” a mortal lock. Tiffany found a partner that will always tell her the unvarnished truth, because he actually loves and cares about her. Pat found woman that loves him for who he is, now - not what he could become later. He now has 3 songs that brings him to Tiffany, instead of one that caused him pain. The Silver Lining in this loving relationship is “fullfilment and well-being” and I’ll take that over a typical romantic-comedy or the “against-all-odds” love story any day of the week. Loved, loved, loved this reaction! (BTW - another 20 pts for the Star Trek reference. The “Excelsior” was indeed that “bucket o’bolts” sabotaged by Scottie and later captained by Sulu) Well done, there : )

Ike

Truly delightful movie. I had a bit of a big day and it was great to have this to come home to. I think my favourite type of reaction content is watching someone discover something you already know they’ll love and how could anyone not love a movie that ends with all the characters getting together for a big dance contest. David O Russell is a bit of a mixed bag as a director (and person) but his Three Kings (1999) is probably the best American war movie of the 90s and should be seen by many more people.

Jacob King

The dance contest certainly does have "Little Miss Sunshine" vibes. The fish-out-of water family supporting one of their own surrounding by people super serious about the contest not knowing what is going based on the behaviour of the family & friends. Also like to shout-out to Jacki Weaver, the wife/mum, this was one of first couple of Hollywood movies. The Oscar nomination for this basically made her an overnight Hollywood sensation, and she has been in so many Hollywood based things since, even though she has been a well known actor here in Australia since the '70s. It was the Australian movie "Animal Kingdom" that got her Hollywood's attention. The movie is probably a good recommendation for the channel, and was even made into a US TV show.

Mojo One Thousand

I also liked that they didn't land the big move in the dance. Real life is messy sometimes.

Brent Petty

I was thinking it was either American Hustle or Joy.

Brent Petty

I still think Bradley was snubbed! Jennifer was great but I thought Bradley had the better and stronger performance. He says so much with just his facial expressions, like when he freaks out at the doctors office when he hears the song. You can tell he's embarrassed, knows how bad he looks and is heartbroken, that scene is really so sad.

Annie519

I loved him in Alias! Will was always one of my favorites! That was such a great show that I wish got more attention these days!

Annie519

I love this movie. The performances were just spot on this is one of my all time favorites. Watching this with you just enhances the movie for me. Thanks Cassie for another great reaction. Don't worry about any delay. Your reactions are worth the wait.

Zachary K. (Swiftie)

On a side note: the lighting you're using is FANTASTIC!

Philip Alan

Cooper, Lawrence, DeNiro, and Weaver (the mom) all received Oscar nominations for this film. Lawrence won for Best Actress. The film was also nominated for Best Picture.

Brent Petty

This is such a great film, I love how it really dives into mental health and showing it in a very real way and showing different kinds of mental health, Pat obviously was bipolar but Tiffany was severely depressed and Pat's father clearly had OCD. I love how they first bond from talking about meds, lol. Jennifer was great and deserved her Oscar but I think Bradley was sadly snubbed and deserved it more, I just thought he had the better and more difficult performance. The scene when he freaks out about the wedding video is so unsettling and feels so real. My brother also has bipolar and he acts very similar to Pat, like waking his parents up at 4 in the morning and rambling about nonsense, lol. And luckily he too got help and is doing much better and the biggest thing was having his daughter, she completely changed him, he will have his little outburst once in a while but nowhere near like he used to. And I love in this film that they aren't saying he's miraculously cured now but has a more healthy way of dealing with it and has that support. And last, the ending is so funny when they cheer about their score and everyone else's confused reactions. I love that they didn't nail the big move, it kept it more realistic and the dance itself was very bipolar, it was all over the place and I loved it. And don't worry, it was okay to laugh when you thought you shouldn't or weren't suppose it, I did too. lol And a fun fact, the scene when Pat's dad is talking to him in bed and starts to cry that wasn't in the script, Robert did that on his own and it really makes the scene so much better. And that's why Robert is one of the greatest! And I'm pretty sure Bradley's reactions were also genuine since he wasn't expecting it so he just had to go along with it.

Annie519

I hadn’t seen this movie since its initial release. I don’t even think I knew who Shea Whigham was at the time (this was before I saw Boardwalk Empire), let alone remembered Chris Tucker being in the cast. What a wonderful film! It begins with words and ends with beautiful, powerful acting plus editing to set the pace. I know people who have OCD, who are bipolar and their paths are not easy. This movie gives a glimpse, and it’s riveting.

Marja

I love this movie. The acting is phenomenal across the board. I have a brother with severe bipolar disorder and this was so well done. Your reaction was amazing.

Farbod

Excelsior! The casting in this one was spot-on, and always liked how unconventional it felt; first of four movies to date featuring Bradley and J. Law; is that other 70s movie you’re thinking of American Hustle? Christian Bale and Amy Adams were also in it, and it was from the same director of this one David O. Russell

JL_83

I haven’t seen this movie, and based on Cassie’s comments, its probably not what I was expecting. But I look forward to experiencing it for the first time here. However, I don’t think I can keep my eyes open any longer 😴 so it will have to be a Saturday night watch for me. Until then…

Dan M

The garbage bag isn't really that weird. Working out in a trash bag increases your sweat rate, which can lead to significant weight loss immediately after the workout due to the loss of water weight from sweat. I remember seeing the wrestlers at my high school running the stairs in garbage bags to make their weight class.

Brent Petty

I’m glad you found peace with your mental illness, I just wish it didn’t take a movie to make you feel that peace. And you are never alone. You have an entire community of movie lovers like yourself to talk with right here 🙂

Dan M

This movie finally gave me peace... Like I finally received permission to be okay with having mental illness. To not feel like I have to hide it. I finally felt like I wasn't alone anymore. I will always cherish this film.

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

Watching your reaction now. Edit: Done. You did seem lost for words at the conclusion -- was a sudden positive emotional ending in the movie. Then, you took the hour break to collect your thoughts before doing the outro. I thought the tension (mental/emotional strain) throughout the movie would be a distraction or unpleasant for you -- but that the performances, subject matter, and ending would more than make up for it. I have watched this movie several times over the years. I first watched it in the theater late on a weeknight in 2012, and was caught off guard how much I like it. Good point about not being the typical chick flick (I never thought about it) and having a good chick flick ending. To me, one of the best endings in movie history. I agree that Robert De Niro was good -- he transformed himself into that character. And of course, Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper gave damn good performances.

Clay F

Hell yes...love this movie. "Can we get through one $%&#ing conversation without you reminding me that my goddamn husband's dead?"

Steve Mercier

one of my all time favorites.

zynjams

I remember watching a young Bradley Cooper when he was on ALIAS. He has certainly blossomed into becoming a top notch movie star. This might be my favorite role of his.
