Dave (1993) - Full Reaction

I think we all need a DAVE in our lives! Geez this was fun and heart warming and so dang enjoyable. I am glad I didn't make the connection this was the same actor who played Otto from A fish called Wanda, I hope I wouldn't have held it against him! Enjoy!!

Such a gem of a movie, always leaves me smiling. I'd like to recommend 'Life as a House' as another great Kevin Kline movie. Also stars Hayden Christensen as a teen who is estranged from his father (Kline); a good acting job by Hayden.

Chryss Guiler

A couple of true political comedy-dramas you might enjoy Recount (2008) Game Change (2012)

Butt Head

Kevin Kline is such an under rated actor. I first saw him in the broadway turned motion picture The Pirates of Penzance which I highly recommend, he's so great in it. He was and is a bigger Stage actor than film actor. Although some of his films are great. like French Kiss with Meg Ryan, Sophie's Choice along side Meryl Streep, Silverado one of my all time favorite westerns staring along side: A young Kevin Costner, Danny Glover, Scott Glenn huge cast. Soapdish along side Robert Downey Jr, Sally Field and many others, IN & Out, Grand Canyon, I love you to Death, Just so many great films.

Ryan Towell

This is one of my all time favorites. It’s just a great movie. Great plot. No crazy special effects. I had been waiting for you to finally watch it and I was not disappointed🥰 as others are saying French Kiss is a great Kevin Kline movie that you can enjoy with Carly. And if you are interested in Charles Grodin(dad from Beethoven) may I suggest Heart and Souls an early Robert Downey jr film

Nicole

This! I love this movie. Her and Carly would love it

Nicole

One of my other favorite "Presidents Movies" is My Fellow Americans, Jack Lemmon and James Garner.

CG Shunk

Hello Cassie, your reaction was very funny to watch, maybe you would like to see the distinguished gentlman with eddy murphy, that's a funny movie too.

Claude GIROLET

I know this thread has a ton of recommendations, but with how much you loved Kevin Kline’s charm here, I highly recommend “In and Out”. It particularly would be a great movie for June with Pride Month, and Kevin Kline at his most charming, a great Tom Selleck role, and also a fantastically hilarious Joan Cusack!

Kevin C

Cassie, your reaction to this movie was everything I hoped it would be! I knew you would love it, and I enjoyed re-watching it with you so much! So now I’m thinking Kevin Klein will always be Dave to you instead of Otto 😁. If you want another really good Kevin Klein movie to watch, I recommend In and Out (1997), which also stars Tom Selleck (Peter in Three Men and A Baby).

Dan M

I am not sure if your little girl has seen Mary Poppins - the original from 1964 - if not I am sure she would enjoy watching it along with her mom. Your boys enjoyed Tron...I think your daughter would enjoy Poppins.

John Liebling

Cassie I am glad you had fun watch Kevin Klein. Following are other Kevin Klein films you would enjoy: 1. Chaplain staring Iron Man - he has a small part. 2. Silverado - interesting western. 3. Soapdish. 4. De-lovely Cole Porter biography. 5. Thye Pirates of Penzance - showing off his singing chops and the incomparable Linda Ronstadt. 6. Definitely Maybe. 7. The Big Chill. And lastly...78 Life as a house with a young Hayden Christensen - a year before he played Anikan Skywalker - he's a fellow Canadian.

John Liebling

If you havent already seen it, check out the movie "French Kiss" its a RomCom starring Kevin Kline (Dave) and Meg Ryan! Its great!

Aj R

I've loved this movie since it came out. And you're right, the music scores of the 90's had a distinct style. (I also love the warmth of the sound mix back then and the beautiful look of 90's film that we don't really have in today's media.) If you want to continue on your Kevin Kline run, you should watch "French Kiss" with Meg Ryan. I'm pretty sure you'd enjoy that one. (Edit: Also surprised you didn't comment on the secret service guy who Dave befriends is played by "Luther Stickle" from the Mission Impossible movies.)

WastedPo

I love this one, must've seen it 30 times, simply wonderful.

John

Absolutely brilliant watch-along! :) Total pleasure. Glad you got so much out of what is one of my favourite chill-out, feet-up movies. :)

James Forrest

I was a news junkie in the early 90s and watched stuff like the PBS "The McLaughlin Group" and CNN "Crossfire" depicted in the movie. I recognized a few relatively high profile journalists (e.g., PBS Nina Totenberg who covers the US Supreme Court). Also, several actual US Senators and US House members were in the movie. TIP O'NEIL Thomas Phillip "Tip" O'Neill Jr. (1912-1994) (born Cambridge, Mass.) -- a powerful Speaker of the House having the longest uninterrupted tenure (1977-1987) as Speaker -- was briefly in the movie. Tip O'Neil was elected to the US House of Representatives to fill the seat vacated by JFK after JFK was elected to the US Senate. HELEN THOMAS One of the most famous actual press members who appeared in the movie was Helen Thomas -- the only member of the White House Press Corps to have her own seat (which happened to be in the front row) in the White House Briefing Room. Fidel Castro was once asked to define the difference between democracy in Cuba and the United States. "I don't have to answer questions from Helen Thomas," the old revolutionary replied. Her signature line at the end of every White House news conference: “Thank you, Mr. President.” She was the first first female president of the White House Correspondents' Association and considered the grand dame of the White House press corps, outlasting nine American presidential administrations. She was a reporter remembered as a trailblazer for women in journalism but also as a grumpy old contrarian. Thomas was the only female print journalist to accompany President Richard Nixon during his 1972 visit to China. JFK said of her: "Helen would be a nice girl if she'd ever get rid of that pad and pencil." It was a sentiment echoed down the decades. "Isn't there a war somewhere we could send her to?" Colin Powell, the former US secretary of state, once asked.

Clay F

Yes. That was an interesting start to Cassie's reaction.

Rick Williams

Yes!!! Absoluitely!

Phillip Bates

that was luther!!?!

Cassie

no way, i love clever cameos like that!

Cassie

The "conspiracy theorist" being interviewed by Larry King is none other than Oliver Stone, the director of JFK, probably the most epic conspiracy film ever made--and also one of Kevin Costner's best performances.

Detective Dick Durkin

The Contender is a terrific film!

Juley

If you want to see more jerks in the Administration, watch "No Way Out" from '87 - Costner's next movie after "Untouchables".

Bert Towle

Awesome reaction. The reactions in which you smile a lot (e.g., Airplane, etc.) are nice. While I like your reactions that are emotional, figuring-it-out, and/or scared, etc., reactions in which you smile throughout are pleasant to see you that way. I guess you noticed that the stoic Secret Service agent Duane Stevenson is Ving Rhames (e.g., Marsellus Wallace of Pulp Fiction)? Sigourney Weaver is beautiful. Laura Linney (Randi) is an excellent actor -- she is great in John Adams (2008) series and Ozark (2017-2022) series. As for Kevin Kline movies, I recommend these two: "Cry Freedom" (1987). Also stars DENZEL WASHINGTON nominated for Oscar for Best Actor. The premise of Cry Freedom (1987) is based on a true story. Good to include in a Black History Month poll, though Feb is almost over. --has 2 requests at popcornrequests.com "The Big Chill" (1983). Nominated for 3 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Actress (Glenn Close), and Best Screenplay. --ranked 610 with 15 requests at popcornrequests.com

Clay F

Veep is good and so funny.

Clay F

I like Ben Kingsley in Gandhi (1982) nominated for 11 Oscars, winning 6 including Best Picture, Kingsley (Best Actor), Attenborough (Best Director), Best Cinematography, and Best Screenplay. I went to Gandhi's house in Mumbai a few yeas ago. Ghandhi (1982) is ranked 647 with 12 requests at popcornrequests.com.

Clay F

Charming film and reaction Cassie! Haven’t seen it many years. So, I forgot most of it. As others have said, a little surprised you didn’t recognize Luther from The Mission Impossible series playing Duane, the secret service agent. Looking forward to 13 days

Robert da Spruce

Kinda hurt my feelings when Cassie said she hated Bob.😢 I was surprised she didn’t recognize the Vice President (Ben Kingsley) as Cosmo in “Sneakers.” He’s great in everything he’s in but I particularly love “Sexy Beast.” If Cassie wants to see more Charles Grodin (he played Dave’s CPA buddy), she should check out “Midnight Run” with him and Robert DeNiro, another great comedy. He’s also good in “Seems Like Old Times” as Goldie Hawn’s husband, a criminally underrated romantic comedy/suspense movie starring Chevy Chase.

Just Plain Bob

A thoroughly underrated White House film is “The Contender”, with Joan Allen, Jeff Bridges and Sam Elliot (both also previously in The Big Lebowski), Christian Slater, and Gary Oldman

Paul Ark

Would have been x💯 better if his wife played the First Lady

SHANE MARSHALL

Cassie, there is a whole community of folks here who know a genuine, thoughtful, and wonderful person who would be quite 'Dave-like' addressing more heart-filled solutions to our country's issues... but you don't look anything like Joe Biden! This was a charming one and yes one with a big kiss at the end!

Terry Yelmene

Such a shame that movie’s been so forgotten. No Way Out is a ridiculously intense thriller.

Mitch M

"French Kiss”(1995) is such a tender movie.

Uncle Phoenix

I hope Popcorn gets around to watching Keanu Reeves in another ROMCOM “Something’s Gotta Give” (2003).

Uncle Phoenix

Love this movie. I hope you're watching No Way Out (1987 film) with Kevin Costner. Its a dramatic/mystery/action thriller and is great.

Wendy

I love this movie so much! It's so cute and handles the subject matter very well, adding in some real issues and tender moments to the comedy. Kevin Kline does an amazing job. He is also great in "In & Out", "The Big Chill", "French Kiss", "Soap Dish", "No Strings Attached", "Grand Canyon" and "Definitely, Maybe". He's such a good actor.

Phillip Bates

Works in theory, but I think you forgot about In & Out (1997). He's hilarious in that and doesn't have a moustache.

Luke Godfrey

I knew Cassie would love this movie, and I'm so glad she finally got to experience this classic 90s rom-com. It's one of my favourites. Here's hoping when Cassie was looking on IMDb she spotted In & Out (1997), another Kevin Kline 90s rom-com I know she'll love too. 🤞🏻

Luke Godfrey

In 2002, Kevin Kline made another movie I hope one day you may consider. The name of the movie is the Emperor's Club and Kevin plays a teacher of ancient history at an all boys school. It has much of the same warmth, wisdom, and character as Dave. Thank you for your reaction. It had been a long time since I watched this. It is a very special movie and it instills hope in what can still be true.

James

Great reaction to a nice, lighthearted, fun movie. Can’t wait for Thirteen Days though.

James UK

Great reaction Cassie. This is a severely underrated movie.

Matthew Folz

Completely agree about No Way Out. I saw she didn't have it in her collection, so I'm sending her the DVD in the next week or so.

Kirk & Dawn VanWinkle

There is a word to describe films like this… my favorite word… Capraesque Frank Capra made the greatest films about Doing What’s Right and the Power of the Normal, Everyday People. (ie. It’s a Wonderful Life) If you want to see the best of these kinds of Films, then look to Frank Capra’s… Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) Lost Horizon (1937) You Can’t Take it With You (1938) Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) Meet John Doe (1941) For one of the Best Capraesque endeavors of recent, in my opinion, watch… The Newsroom series on HBO (Max), created by The West Wing’s and The American President’s, Aaron Sorkin. ————————————- For another Fun Presidential comedy, I recommend… My Fellow Americans (1996), starring Jack Lemmon, James Garner and Dan Aykrord. “Beethoven’s Dad” is actually named Charles Grodin and is a terrific comedic actor. Look to… Heaven Can Wait (1978), starring Warren Beatty, Julie Christie and Jack Warden. (Romance Alert!) Seems Like Old Times (1980), starring Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase. (Romance Alert!!) Midnight Run (1988), co-starring alongside Robert DeNiro in an Action-Comedy. Lastly, one of my favorite, most reliable character actors, Kevin Dunn, who played Alan. He has been acting in films and TV almost as long as I’ve been alive, and I feel like I’ve grown up with him. From Ghostbusters II, Seinfeld, Hot Shots, Dave, Small Soldiers and Transformers. For a great little RomCom that he co-stars in, check out… Only the Lonely (1991), written and directed by Chris Columbus, and starring John Candy, Ally Sheedy and Maureen O’Hara. For a couple more Presidential run-ins, check out… Nixon (1995), directed by Oliver Stone, who you just saw talking to Larry King in Dave, about the Mitchell Conspiracy. In the film, Kevin Dunn plays someone named Charles Colson. (Name familiar?) Veep (2013 - 2019) series on HBO (Max). Dunn’s longest running gig. Highly recommend this series. This one made me Laugh-Cry ;-)

Larry Darrell

Cute movie. I always liked this movie. Sweet reaction Cassie. I thought you would love it.

Rick Williams

This film seems to have broken the rule where Kevin Kline with a mustache is in a funny role, and Kevin Kline without a mustache is in a dramatic role.

MotoDork

No way out is an excellent political thriller and Kevin Costner‘s breakout role and it takes place in Washington DC A Midsummer night’s dream is an excellent Kevin Klein film, one of my favorites. It’s one of the most fun, Shakespeare adaptations, and it’s a romantic comedy set in 19th century Italy.

Thomas Thompson

Wait that was Bonnie Hunt??? I wasn't watching that closely during that scene and assumed it was Laura Linney. A good cast gets even better.

ContrabandDonut

This is your basic, bad weather Sunday afternoon feel-good movie. Lots of cameos in this film I’ve never noticed before. The most glaring is Duane (Ving Rhames) who is Luther in Mission Impossible! The homeless shelter was run by The West Wing’s Nancy McNally. Laura Linney, the secretary, will play First Lady in another series. Bonnie Hunt as tour guide (been secretly in love with Bonnie Hunt for a few decades). Great reaction - the fun is contagious! This might even make next year’s Poppies.

Ike

Me too. Never happened... but she did recognize Charles Grodin from BEETHOVEN.

Stick Figure Studios

On of my favorite parts this movie is the massive number of people that played themselves in this, 28 congresspersons and media personalities, and 1 actor played themselves in this. Watching this when it came out it gave it a "realism" that was unique.

Keith Jones

It’s like she’s trying to help some cartoon, marshmallow woman deliver a baby.

Thomas Thompson

What a joy to watch Cassie's turnaround on Keven Kline. I want the SILVERADO reaction more than ever. With this movie it seemed that the February Love Month seeped into Popcorn POTUS Week and it was the best combo since chocolate and peanut butter (I'm looking at you, Reece's!)

MikeLL

Kevin Kline is such an amazing actor. You really ought to see him in "Cry Freedom" (1987) opposite Denzel Washington.

Jake McNulty

Delighted you finally got to watch this one Cassie, one of my favourite films. Regarding the question of how to react to a comedy over a thriller/drama etc, I would like to advise you not to overthink it, we all love the way you react naturally, and sometimes that might just mean watching a scene in silence, and whatever you feel just go with it. Keep up the great work.

Paul B

I knew this would be enjoyed, it ticked so many boxes with it being both about the US president and also fitting into the February theme. Didn't realise how many other actors of note were actually in this. I remembered the main four and vaguely Ben Kingsley, but there was Bonnie Hunt, Laura Linney, Ving Rhames, and Charles Grodin (to name a few). "Luther" (M:I) and "Cosmo" (Sneakers) didn't get any love, but glad that "the dad from Beethoven" (Charles Grodin) and "her! we love her..." (Bonnie Hunt) got some love.

Mojo One Thousand

Nice reaction. One of my favorite (along with Grosse Pointe Blank) movies. Really enjoyed the reaction.

FischerMax98

Wow…saw this for the first time back in school, think it was history class and looking forward to a rewatch; a cute, funny little comedy with an excellent cast as well…Luther was obviously assigned to protect the President before he joined the IMF 😂

JL_83

...Don't you miss the days when politicians at least pretended to care about the budget (or having one)... Those were the days.

Mike Lemon

One of the reasons I like DAVE better than THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT is it’s about the ideals and decency to which we should all strive to aspire — and are enabled by the Constitution to aspire — as Americans. Parties are not mentioned once in DAVE.

Jason Chirevas

House reps have been informally referred to as congressmen/women for, minimally, decades. I’d unclench on that one if I were you. You’ll feel better.

Jason Chirevas

Ahhhh! Cassie repeated one of my peeves- "Which is Congress and which is Senate?" - and everybody has been doing it for the last few years. It drives me crazy. The Senate is part of Congress so things like "Congressmen and Senators" makes no sense and should never be said. It is either 'Congressmen' or "**Representatives** and Senators." Not "Congress and Senate" but "**House** and Senate."

Mike Lemon

Surprised she didn't recognize Luther from the Mission Impossible series as the Secret Service agent.

Brent Petty

I was waiting for you to catch on that Duane is Luthor from the Mission Impossible franchise =)

Paul Ark

It has been more than 25 months since Cassie watched a non-english from Europe, and like 10 months since she (more or less) promised a non-english poll. I'm just saying😬🙄🙂

Björn Karlsson

So I remember watching this but I had to go back and see what I rated this on IMDB which I gave it a postive score. So I must have liked it. Which makes Cassie reaction even that more special. I agree we all need Dave in a our lives.

Zachary K. (Swiftie)

I hope we can finally encourage Cassie to watch SILVERADO with Kevin Kline, Danny Glover, and Kevin Costner. It has been a few minutes since Cassie watched a Western.

MikeLL

I was wondering whether or not you were going to recognize Dave as Otto from A FISH CALLED WANDA as this is an entirely different kind of character and shows what a versatile actor Kevin Kline is. The man's a national treasure. I'm so glad you finally got to see this and especially glad that, from the sound of things, you enjoyed it. I knew you would. This is one of my favorite films and I've been hoping for a reaction to it for a long time. Wonderful cast, a smart script, good direction by Ivan Reitman (GHOSTBUSTERS, KINDERGARTEN COP) and a charming score by Janes Newton Howard. For my money, this is the best "president" movie (I even prefer it to THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT). I can't wait to watch this reaction.

Stick Figure Studios

This, American President and Mars Attacks were really great reflections of 90s presidential movies.
