Grosse Pointe Blank (1997) - Full Reaction

This was crazy! John Cusack was so good in this haha. A day in the life of a hitman... this was witty and clever and I liked it. Sorry this last week has been lacking video wise. We got back from a little family vacation and the schedule will return back to normal this week! I'll post an update tomorrow :) Hope you all had a great Super Bowl Sunday!

love watching this. Its been a minute. Great reaction. lol. And Im a Cusack fan also. High Fidelity should be soon if you havnt seen it. Thnx Cassie

pkleo73

I love this movie, it is absolutely one of my favourites and I'm really glad you enjoyed, but I must admit, the whole "Budro the dog" plot line has annoyed me too for YEARS. Having seen it many times, I do get it now, he was doing a job in the Pacific Northwest and ultimately accidentally killed his wealthy client's dog, and the little assassin guy had been hired to take him out as revenge.I love this movie and the quality of the back and forth dialogue, it is brilliant, but I don't know if it was always this messy in the script or just got screwed up in the edit, but just like you were saying to yourself while watching it trying to figure that whole thing out can really distract from trying to just enjoy the movie.

Sam Lowe

YES!

pkleo73

she plays another fantastic sidekick in Working Girl with Melanie Griffin, Harrison Ford and Sigourney Weaver - love that movie. And she's great in a more lead role in My Blue Heaven with Steve Martin and Rick Moranis. plug plug :)

Walter

Xanax the 💊 is known for its calming effect for people that can't handle high stress environments, side effects are memory loss so they won't recall incidents but you also lose other memories, friends, family, relationships, correct spelling etc. Also weight gain and aggravation. Champax and drugs💊💊 for antidepression and severe pain suppression also have similar effects.

SHANE MARSHALL

His sisters are usually in his movies

SHANE MARSHALL

I didn't know Joan Cusack and Ann Cusack were siblings for years. They both are great. And I love Minnie Driver. The movie Sleepers with Her is a must-see. Sleepers is based on a true story and has some great stars in it.

Eddie Perkins

Cassie, I hope you get well soon 🍿🥤 and diet drinks usually contain Aspartame which is very toxic for your health in a variety of ways. If they contain natural sweeteners such as Stevia or Xylitol then half the battle is won

SHANE MARSHALL

If High Fidelity hasn't been on your list, it should be. My favorite John Cusack film.

Farbod

I just had to watch “Dan In Real Life” after this movie.

Uncle Phoenix

I laughed so hard because my wife (Sharon) and you were both worried about the beautiful house getting shot up simultaneously..

Clifton Owens

Heathers is nothing like GPB

Cole Jennett

More like this - Heathers (Christian Slater and Winona Rider - dark comedy about teen suicide) / Four Lions - (Riz Ahmed from Rogue One in a British dark comedy about Islamic terrorism)/ Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - (introducing Jason Statham and Vinny Jones to the world) - Guy Ritchie movie wildly inventive and darkly comedic.

pinkdino99

This was why the 90s was such a great decade for movies. You had all of this boring marketed trite, and then all of a sudden something like this hit the shelves of the local Blockbuster. And what a soundtrack.

pinkdino99

Long way to Fear the Walking Dead, I really like her in that!

Greggory Shaw

I think last night’s MVP ought to be Paul. He handled that like a Champ.

Larry Darrell

If you want to see "the sidekick", Joan Cusack, in her first role, look for "My Bodyguard" - a Chicago film from 1980. It's also the first film for Jennifer Beals ("Flashdance") and Adam Baldwin who you saw in "Independence Day"

Bert Towle

And the drunk woman who sat with them at the bar was his other sister, Ann Cusack. There’s also another brother, Bill Cusack, who plays a waiter.

Larry Darrell

His secretary was played by his real life sister Joan Cusack.

Joshua s. Jackson

The actress playing Martin's mom, was Barbara Harris. This was her last film. She played the mom in the original Freaky Friday (1976) opposite Jodie Foster. She starred in Alfred Hitchcock's final film, Family Plot (1976) alongside Bruce Dern. She was part of the All-Star cast of the Robert Altman directed Nashville (1975), which was nominated for Five Academy Awards in 1976, including Best Picture alongside Dog Day Afternoon, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest & Jaws. Nashville won the Oscar for Best Song, written by actor Keith Carradine, brother of David Carradine (Bill, of Kill Bill). And Barbara Harris starred in another film, kind of centered around a high school reunion, Peggy Sue Got Married (1986). (Same year Martin and Debbie graduated ;-). This film, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, also stars Kathleen Turner, Nicolas Cage, Catherine Hicks, Jim Carrey, Joan Allen, Kevin J. O'Connor and a young Sofia Coppola and Helen Hunt.

Larry Darrell

This movie has so many hidden details that I didn't get until I had seen it several times: Martin is continually saying "It's not me" when he kills someone, superficially meaning that he is just the weapon, and not responsible. However it could also be him subconciously realising that the job of a hitman is just not compatible with who he is and he is past his breaking point. The pills that Grocer takes seem to be something to numb his emotions and allow him to kill without remorse, something that Martin used to do but doesn't anymore, and may explain why it's taken so long to lose his tolerance for killing.

ProgressiveRoxx

This has to be my favourite reaction to date! I knew Cassie would like this movie, but I've seen it so many times I'd forgotten just how crazy it seems to someone watching for the first time. Seeing her reactions to this off-kilter dark comedy classic while having no idea what to expect from scene to scene, made it all the more enjoyable to rewatch. I'd wager this is a movie Cassie would happily watch again and again like the rest of us. 🍿

Luke Godfrey

What a fun movie. Knew the general premise but never actually seen the whole thing before. Great reaction too! Even though I hadn't seen the movie before, I practically know the soundtrack by heart (parents owned the CD when I a kid). Some great jams!

SeanATX

That was great. We need to get her to watch High Fidelity

Caelin Beaty

When I first saw this many years ago, I was really into the dark comedy. But now that I’m older, this is a very different movie. I don’t feel know that it works as well when I was younger. Thanks for letting us watch it with you

Anjolie Lanel

P.S. John Cusack, Joan Cusack (secretary) & Ann Cusack (drunk friend) (all real life siblings). FYI.

Philip Alan

"Is that a potato?!"

Philip Alan

I take it you haven't seen Happiness. My sense is that you don't really know what a dark comedy is.

Carol_White

Jenna Elfman the lady in the neck brace is hilarious., She was in Darma and Greg, Edtv, a really fun romantic comedy with her is called keeping the faith. Starring her, Edward Norton and Ben Stiller directed by Edward Norton. Confession I've seen this movie probably 50 times and everytime I see the scene where he's holding Robbie and they're staring into each other eye, always makes my eyes water up a bit..

Ryan Towell

Great soundtrack in this one. Lots of great alternative/college hits of the 80s . Definately on the unusual side but a classic film.

Canadianant

John Cusack was on a great run in the late 90s. As you're in the mood for more Cusack, I'm throwing out another recommendation for Being John Malkovich!

Henry Graham

This fim is such an underrated gem. John and Minnie have great chemistry. And it was fun to have John and Jeremy together again like they were in Serendipity. Then you have Dan Aykroyd playing another quirky character, which he does so well. And Alan Arkin playing the therapist was such great casting. Cusack was made to play roles like this one and be in cool, witty independent films. I loved your reaction to my favourite scene, where he and the baby are looking into each other's eyes/souls... that scene always kills me, in a good way.

Phillip Bates

Fun movie. Great music. Great Reaction.

Rick Williams

I think it's a little odd to suggest that people aren't voting for their favorites. Grosse Pointe Blank is absolutely my favorite movie out of the movies you listed. I'm sorry your favorites didn't get chosen this time. I'm sure they will come soon enough. I won't denigrate your votes, I would ask the same respect from you.

Robert Haynes

I think this is a great reaction video. It’s just one of those reaction videos I know is always going to make me happy, In The Future.

Uncle Phoenix

I always think of “Dan In Real Life” whenever I hear Pete Townsend. (FYI: IF I ever get married...)

Uncle Phoenix

I think that we all would love High Fidelity.

Uncle Phoenix

That’s so funny.

Uncle Phoenix

Right, I've been hoping for that one!

Greggory Shaw

Benny the Jet is mentioned in Say Anything… as well, and I believe is also the guy who kicks him in the face while sparring in that movie.

Cole Jennett

This is one of the movies along with Father of the Bride, Dan in Real Life, Sabrina and While you were Sleeping that I’ve watched a hundred times and will never be sick of!

Cole Jennett

I hope that one stays with Cassie for a long time!

MikeLL

Grosse Pointe Black is one of my favourites! If you lke John Cusack, and want a good love movie, try High Fidelity!

Alex Lee

“Bing Bing Bing Bing Bang Popcorn!”

Cole Jennett

Another great dark comedy starring Cusack that’s worth catching is “The Ice Harvest.”

Just Plain Bob

90s classic. I knew you'd love it because it's a weird rom-com.

Odd Thomas

I dated the love of my life in high school in the 1980s. We broke up, then 18 years later we got back together again. We've been married for 23 years now. :-) As a result, this movie really resonates with me, both for the time period and for the romance.

Wally Hartshorn

John Cusack is the master of quirky charm. His characters are usually odd, but very lovable. And I have seen Minnie Driver in 3 different romantic movies/storylines (this, Return To Me, Good Will Hunting) and she is incredibly charming every time. This movie is an oddball romantic choice, but I love it.

Walter

Likewise. 😂 I couldn't help but say: "Yes. A composition 4 potato. Deadly when heated." 🥔 💥

Zane From Canada

Cassie, I think what you should do is in the polls is, you pick out what people have voted it on, and then you make a pick out of the same poll. I think people are choosing not the one you want to see but what is the craziest one they can choose. Like choosing I Robot over Lost In Translation. Or Grosse Pointe Blank over Silver Linings Playbook and Officer in a Gentleman. I am not knocking Grosse Pointe Blank. It's just compared Oscar winners there is no comparison. If you put Wild Things (1998) with Kevin Bacon, Bill Murray, Neve Campbell in a Romantic Movie poll with Oscar Winners they would choose Wild Things which by the way Wild Things is like Fifty Shades Of Grey on steroids. I ultimately think you know what you want to see so you should make your own pick. Your selections tend to be so much better than what the Cassiens choose.

Zachary K. (Swiftie)

"Is that a Potato?" That one got me.

Christopher Smith

I love this movie!! The soundtrack is great

thomas king

Love this movie! I am Class of '86 so it has a special place in my heart. And both John Cusack and Jeremy Piven might look too old for their 10 year reunion (especially with Jeremy's hairline) but they're only two and three years too old. respectively. By Hollywood standards that's right on the money. Joan Cusack is a delight in every single role. And the drunk woman at the club who interrupted their drink was another Cusack sister. The scene with his mom was so sad, I agree. I mean, obviously, Martin dropped out of touch with them but he probably sent a whole lot of money so that his mom would be taken care of. Although really, that place she's in looks very nice, so maybe someone put it in a trust for her care. And the scene with Martin pouring the whiskey on his father's grave is something, too. Clearly that was a strained relationship. One thing I appreciate about Martin's character is that he has all these glib, funny answers to "what do you do?" but he doesn't lie to the people who are important to him. He tells the truth to Debi, to Paul, and to Debi's dad. They all assume he's joking. And just about my favorite scene is between Martin and Bob Destephalo. I used to teach high school and I once got into a random class discussion about masculinity and how it could be misused and misunderstood. (The term "toxic masculinity" wasn't really a thing yet.) But I actually pulled up that scene on YouTube to make a point. Here's this professional killer face to face with the biggest jerk from his high school and the jerk is trying to start a fight. The obvious way that scene should go is for Martin to knock Bob down with one punch. Instead, he talks to him. "Who do you want to hit, man? Because it's not me." Then comes the drunken poetry and the hug. I said to my male students, "Look at how he handles that. Look at how Debi is smiling. There is not a woman alive who wouldn't be completely attracted to that kind of strength and restraint." And that's why it's so emotionally devastating for her to see him kneeling over the bloody corpse of that assassin. Anyway, I was delighted that this won your poll!

Rosanne Stewart

The darkest of dark comedies, this movie is fun, fun, fun. A romance that is so charming and suave, this is the romcom that chicks can show their guy, and their guy won't even know that he is watching a rom com, ha ha. I loved Cassie's reaction to this one. And I loved Joan Cusack, John's sister in this one as the hitman's office assistant. If they ever make The Hitman's Office Assistant, sign me up for that one!

MikeLL

How this one even got on the poll, I have no idea, but I do love this movie. I still can't think of it as a romance. I do love Minnie Driver, though. She is an undervalued gem. She was absolutely mesmerizing in "Good Will Hunting" too, although everyone was great in that. If you liked this one (i.e., dark comedy with run of the mill, if somewhat dysfunctional, romance in it) you should see "The Whole Nine Yards", "Analyze This" and "Analyze That". From the poll, "Silver Linings Playbook" should have won it for a genuinely romantic movie. And the one I'd recommend as a PPPotM would be "An Officer And A Gentleman" - it's the OG romantic drama that put Richard Gere on the map. You need to see him when he was young and it'll never win a poll, it's just not current enough.

David Collins

"True Romance" would also be a great one to react to.

FischerMax98

Such good chemistry between Cusack and Driver. Action romance done very well. One of my favorites. Check out A Knights Tale for fantasy/action/romance.

FischerMax98

"No meetings." I can appreciate that. During filming, John Cusack was age 30 and Minnie Driver was age 26. I agree that John Cusack was perfect for the role. The actor as Bob (who read out loud a portion of his poem) also was Randleman (Bull) in Band of Brothers. I thought the movie hilarious. Witty and clever, as you said. I enjoyed the movie. I think the movie good for a dark comedy poll or a hitman poll, and there is enough romance for it to be in a romance movie poll. I was glad to hear you may react to other movies in the romance poll (a good list). My top two from the romance movie poll are: 1. The second place "Silver Linings Playbook" (2012). --Jennifer Lawrence won Oscar for Best Actress. 2. The third place "An Officer and a Gentleman" (1982) for nostalgia and because a classic, and I am a Debra Winger fan. My daughter likes this movie. Silver Linings Playbook nominated for 8 Oscars including: -Best Picture -Bradley Cooper (wow) -Robert De Niro (De Niro transformed himself) -Jacki Weaver (I have to mention her b/c she damn good acting).

I was born in Grosse Pointe, Michigan!

David Crabtree

Yes! Exactly yes! The fight in the hallway is between student and teacher. John Cusack has been training with Benny "The Jet" Urquidez for around 20 years the story goes. Benny is a world champion. He shows up in another epic fight with Jackie Chan. I haven't seen Grosse Pointe in a while - I must see! 🙂 Minnie Driver doing a Jamaican accent for fun 🥰 Sister Joan Cusack is great in it too...!

Mannygogou

I always thought it should have been the 20th reunion, not the 10th. “Oh, my youth! Oh, I’ve peaked!” Y’all are 27! You’re only five years removed from keggers and frisbee golf on the quad! Great movie though. Aykroyd weird as hell, what a bizarre performance.

Brian Harris

I've always enjoyed this movie, it is zany. Certainly probably a bit lighter on the "rom" and also darker on the "com" than the other movies on the list, but it is still an enjoyable movie. All the movies on the list were pretty solid in fitting the criteria for the month for various reasons. I didn't vote for "Grosse Point Blank" but I fine with it winning, and pretty much would have enjoyed any on the list. It probably wasn't the first, but was a bit of a pioneer in showing the everyday life of someone with an unsavoury job, and doing in a matter-of-fact way. This amps it up a bit though, as "Martin" never actually lies about his life as he is trying to be a better person, but nobody believes him. A few familiar faces that Cassie half recognised, but didn't really place. There was Hank Azaria, who played the NSA agent "Lardner", he does plenty of voices from "The Simpsons", but from the channel , he is in "Heat', but if I had to guess maybe the" Night at the Museum"? He is on so many thing. The woman in the brace at the reunion is Jenna Elfman and she was the start of hit sitcom at the about the sametime of this movie called "Dharma & Greg", I don't think she has been in anything that has been on the channel, but she was in loads of 2000s rom-coms, not many as the main character so it may have been one of these. "Debi'" father "Bart" is played by MItchell Ryan, who was also in "Dharma & Greg" with Jenna Elfman, but he played "Genreal McAllister", the boss villain in "Lethal Weapon".

I just noticed now that the ghoul's name Felix LaPoubelle in French means Felix The Garbage Can. 😂😂😂

Zane From Canada

This is a movie I have heard a lot about but never actually seen it. Have to wait for weekend to watch along. I hope you had a great holiday. I really need to take some time off myself. So much annual leave saved up plus long service leave. Over 100 days all up.🤣😳 Just listening to the reaction as I am typing and certainly my interest is piqued in just first 5 minutes.

Brian McGovern

Also, WAIT UNTIL DARK and THE ROCKETEER.

Stick Figure Studios

Alan Arkin, the actor who was the grandpa in Little Mis Sunshine - he was a fine actor for many years. He died about 8 months ago at 89. Cassie if you want to see him when he was young you can check out the comedies: 1. The Russians Are coming 1966 and 2. The In-Laws 1979. If you want a more serious subject, there is the holocaust movie about Jews escaping from their concentration camp. Title of the movie is "Escape from Sobibor" It came out in 1987 It also stars Rutger Hauer. Maybe your remember the movie Blade Runner with Harrison Ford. Rutger was the replicant - machine who wanted to live. He was also in Batman Begins. The movie Escape from Sobibor is a very touching movie. If you didn't know it before Alan Arkin is Jewish.

John Liebling

I really love this movie so much

MattN

hope your vacation was good. This was one of the movies I’d put on in the video store ALL THE TIME when we were cleaning up at the end of the day. I haven’t watched it in nearly a decade tho. Excited for this.

This should be good!
