My brain obviously doesn't wrap around time travel... but it is so romantic! These two had great chemistry, a touch of magic love story and a perfect February movie! This was my PPOTM, enjoy! Star Trek VI will be up tomorrow :)
I was going to suggest that they watch Il Mare. The ending is different, as I recall; kinda like the difference between "Forever Young" and "Late to Dinner."

It is confusing I admit. Look at it this way, the only thing that time travels is the letters but what they do differently in their timelines can effect the other such as the tree and her telling him not to go causing him to not try to cross the street and therefore die. All he has to do is just wait his two years and then meet up with her in her year. The only reason it didn't work at the restaurant is because in her timeline he had already died. When she stopped that from happening and he just lived his life they could then meet.

First time watch… terrible. Love both actors, but couldn’t she give him lottery numbers then meet up later both rich and in love.
Maybe shallow but this movie has plot holes the size of a house.
Yay happy ending?

Nobody ends up dying. You two have trouble with timelines and following them. It was my first time watching this movie. It sounded confusing and weird so I never wanted to watch it. But, it was actually pretty good. And I didn't have any trouble following the different timelines. I wish I could lay it out for you two on a white board or something. You just need it mapped out so you can see it. Great Reaction Ladies.

I'm glad you and Carly reacted to this one, Cassie. I suggested this movie to you back in 2022. I think one of the things that made this a tricky one for you to wrap your head around is that you went into it thinking it was a time-travel movie. The characters never travel in time. The letters are the only things traveling in time.
When Kate leaves the letter in the Lake House mailbox in 2006, asking the next occupant of the house to forward her mail, the letter shows up in Alex's Lake House mailbox in 2004. His reply, from 2004, shows up in the Lake House mailbox in 2006.
The tricky part is when they meet (or try to meet). When they agree to meet at the restaurant, Kate has to wait only one day, whereas Alex has to wait 2 years and one day. I think if you watch it again sometime, it will become more clear to you. Anyway, cheers for the happy ending!!

I had never seen this movie before. I find the comments here intended to convey some logical coherence to the movie's plot to be quite interesting. I agree that one shouldn't think too much about the logic behind the movies goings on, because I couldn't find any, or at least dwelling on such concepts would dispel the movie's emotional impact, which I found to be considerable. Once again I was wrapped up in Cassie's and Carly's reactions, and was as swept up in the movie as they were. A great February reaction.

I've always loved this movie because it's a different take on a romantic tale and it has a happy ending... and their chemistry is great. I really loved the performances and that it's set in Chicago but still has the lovely lake house setting. And I like that Jack, plus the lake house, is their connection to each other through those 2 years. And Christopher Plummer, who plays his dad, has been in so many good films, including the two that you mentioned plus The Sound of Music, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Star Trek VI, Must Love Dogs, A Beautiful Mind and 12 Monkeys and many more. I'm glad that you both enjoyed it. I won't explain the time travel bits as I see some people have already done a good job of that above.

Keanu is in 2004 and Sandra is in 2006. They are moving forward in time at the same rate. If it’s February 1st 2004 at 1pm in Keanu’s time then it is February 1st 2006 at 1pm in Sandra’s time.
Imagine two cars on a road. They are 2 miles apart. They are both going 60mph. They will never meet.
so the date they make. Keanu makes the reservation for 2 years and 1 day ahead. Sandra is already 2 years ahead. She only has to wait one day. Keanu has to wait 2 years and 1 day.
Keanu lives because like the tree, if you change the past it changes the future. And we saw it changes for her immediately. And to answer Carly, no. Nobody else died. They just lived happily ever after. The end.
So once again. They are both moving forward at the same pace just two years apart. Like the cars. But NO. Nobody died.

Oh... I watching Il Mare. The South Korean movie The Lake House is based on. An interesting movie but they are two different movies to me. Each movie is connected by the mailbox and time travel but the cultural differences and the Holidays each movie picks to start on, really change the movies up. Il Mare (The Sea) is a Christmas movie and the romantic shift to Valentine's Day gives The Lake House a different feel to me.
Maybe it's just an American-Hollywood thing.

That’s true, but in on the concept art of the future condo, there were trees in front of the building, so they were planned. (It’s a strange detail for the movie to include.)
I know there weren’t trees in Kate’s time and the grown tree suddenly appeared to her, thereby demonstrating that Alex could affect the future and “planting the seed” of hope for the end of the movie… but what if Alex inadvertently caused a paradox by planting the one tree, the condo developer never planted the other trees?

I’ve never watched The Lake House before. I appreciated it wasn’t a rom-com and had an unconventional “sci-fi-ish” twist. Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock had great chemistry together.
I know it’s a romantic movie… but the cold-hearted logician in me couldn’t get past that if I discovered a time-travel mailbox and I was on the past-side of the connection, I’d ask Kate to look up winning lottery numbers (ones that didn’t win originally) and promise to split the winnings with her.
If you think about it too much, it’s a rabbit hole of an ethical dilemma because Hurricane Katrina occurred in 2005!
… It’s just a movie. A sweet romantic movie with a time travel gimmick. (Don’t overthink it.)

There is something Science Fiction can give a romance that makes me go all mushy.
The way I this movie. Alex dies in Kate's Arms and they make a connection as she tries to save his life. In her grief, she went to the lake house a place Alex is deeply connected to. The connection she had with Alex was strong enough to bend/warp spacetime.
The Letters, the tree, and the book were all moved or changed by them within this time loop. The 3rd party to this loop is Jack the dog. She was a stray that most likely sensed the bubble in time and could feel time the way Kate and Alex couldn't.
As Sci-Fi goes it's good. I don't mind changing things in my time-travel stories. In fact, I find it more interesting than a set timeline. The only issue I have is Kate doesn't send Alex Lotto numbers. They already know they love each other.
I mean 2 years of Lotto winnings helps a lot of people. It builds hospitals, schools, whatever you can think of.
Of course I understand why they didn't. But if anyone in chat starts getting emails from me 2 years in the past. They're getting some lotto numbers from me.
That was good. In real life, they liked each other and never even told each other how much. As I have always said people need to learn to communicate more. https://youtu.be/LotSRXM_JAY?feature=shared

The Time Travel aspect of this film is fairly simple if you draw it out... like Doc Brown in Back to the Future. I remember Cassie saying a few times before that She likes diagrams. Start by drawing ONE Line and write the years 2004 - 2008 on it spaced out. This will help you to see where Alex and Kate are at any given point on the Timeline. There is only One Timeline and only One Universe.
With every letter that Kate writes to Alex, she is changing the past. She is changing the past, the same as Marty and Doc Brown did, but where Alex and Kate differ, is that Alex and Kate do NOT have a Time Machine in which to "travel" with. They are Not creating Off-Shoots from their timeline... or if they are, they are not able to go to them or see them, because they are unable to "travel" through time. All Alex and Kate can do is communicate back and forth between the Past and Present.
Notice that there is NO Future. Alex is in the Past. Kate is in the Present. The past changes and the present just adapts and morphs into the changes that were made.
Time for both of them was always moving forward at the same speed. Alex just needed to catch up to Kate at a point where she knew who he was, but was unable to because his appearance on the Timeline stopped in early 2006, before Kate started writing letters. Until she changed... well you know. Think of Alex doing the same thing The Tree did. Alex most likely had new memories of the past two years, but that is unimportant. All that matters is Alex is in the Present with Kate now.
This is as much of Time Travel that the Film requires for the viewer to understand. Any more details are really just for Time Travel Buffs.
(I had a completely different version of this written before, which honestly flowed better. But, I accidently swiped left on my mouse and erased All of It. I was almost gonna walk away and say "forget" it... but I decided I wasn't gonna be beaten like that. ;-)
Speaking of Time Travel Buffs, I recently saw a film on Netflix... Time Trap (2017). It's not a big budget film and the writing and dialogue isn't the best... but it was a Time Travel movie unlike any I had seen. The Premise and Story was so much Fun and will have you thinking about it for days afterwards. Imagining Cassie trying to figure out Time Dilation is a pretty funny thought.
----------------------------
Note: the film that Kate was watching with the little girl and again at home when Morgan told her to turn it down... was Notorious (1946)... a Romantic Thriller, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, and starring Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman and Claude Rains. This film, I believe, has been on a Poll a time or two.
Lastly... to quote Simon Wyler "it's like Nietzsche says, 'Life would be senseless without music.'" The correct quote by Nietzsche is actually, "Without music, Life would be a mistake."
Both Work. Both True... and if you'll allow me to add one more.
Without Carole King, music would be senseless.

Cassie, do you remember Christopher Plummer? You mentioned before that you liked watching "The Sound of Music" with your mom. He is the one who fell in love with Julie Andrews. And long ago when both Shatner and Plummer were very young; it's Shatner who was his understudy. Time as Spock would say, it's "Fascinating" The Lake House came out in 2006...that's 41 years after The Sound of Music. And the Sound of Music came out 26 years before Star Trek VI...I mention that because Christopher Plummer is in ST6. Though I won't give you any spoilers...it would be interesting before they role the credits if you can identify him.

The tree did just appear. In 2006, she told him she liked trees, so in his time of 2004, he planted the tree outside her building, so, as soon as he planted it in 2004, it would appear in 2006.

Cassie, in the outro, I think you said that she didn’t remember that it was him that she danced with and kissed, but she did. When she was sitting in the pub, she said “oh my god” under her breath and then she wrote him saying “That was you” and asking why he didn’t say anything because she liked him and he said she would’ve thought he was crazy.

Always enjoy when Keanu Reeves is involved as "The Replacements" gets a mention. Keanu cops a bit of stick about his acting, and often consider a bit of a proxy for the audience to put themselves into the story, but is acting is pretty good in this.
It not exactly time travel, more like a rip in time that isolated to the lake house, or at least its mailbox, with "Jack" the dog as the guide. But like with all time bending stuff, don't think to hard about it as it is always full of paradoxes, and it will make your brain hurt. It all worked out in the end.
Both of you ladies were following along much better than you gave yourself credit for, there was only a couple of places where you were a bit of the rails. I almost thought Cassie had figured it out when the bus accident first happened, she did almost guess and pulled back her thought.
Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock do have good chemistry, and this maybe because of something that came out the in the past couple of years, where they both said they had unrequited feeling for each while making Speed, but neither pursued them.

Cassie and Carly, there is a deleted scene where they figure out they are living on the same day, just 2 years apart. When they made plans to meet at the restaurant in 2006. It was the next day for her, but he was in 2004 and he would’ve had to wait 2 years and a day to catch up to her for their date.
When they went on the tour of the city “together” it was the same day, just 2 years apart, Alex was in 2004 and painted that message on the wall that it was nice to spend the day together, but she saw the message in 2006.
When she was meeting with Alex’s brother on Valentines Day in 2008 and learned that he died in 2006, she figured out that that was why he didn’t show up at the restaurant and when she figured out that he was the man who died on Valentines Day 2006 at the plaza in the accident, she ran to the lake house to get him the note so he would hopefully read it in time and not go to the plaza and cross the street, which he didn’t because he did get her note. So technically since he didn’t cross the street, nobody died in an accident there. She wrote that warning note at the lake house on Valentines Day in 2008 hoping he would get it in time on Valentines Day in 2006 and then he had to wait another 2 years again until 2008 to catch up with her and go to the lake house where she was waiting having just put the warning note in the mailbox. It was the same day for her, when they finally met at the end, but it was 2 years for him to catch up. Since he never died, the timeline changed so for Alex’s brother and everyone else, Alex never died. I hope that helps and didn’t confuse you more
