[YT Edit] Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986)

Comments

I love Cassie's vulcan ears

V M

I didn't watch mean watch it first. More as need to watch it to understand Star Trek 8. Like Space Seed set up Wrath of Khan

Jeremy

I'd start with Encounter at Farpoint first, then Q Who, then BOBW, and even Family afterward.

Chrissonator

Decades after this movie, engineers actually invented transparent aluminum

John Sullivan

The best Trek movie IMO

John Sullivan

One thing about the movie not mentioning what happened in the episodes: remember these where theatrical releases for general audiences. Star Trek was in the public consciousness enough for everyone to know who Kirk and Spock were, but your average viewer wouldn't know, for example, that they did the slingshot-around-the-sun thing in one of the episodes. So the films avoided a lot of lore (Khan notwithstanding) and tried to be more broadly entertaining.

David Conroy

"Are you sure it isn't time for a colorful metaphor?"

Paul Stelter

Love to see you so excited about Star Trek. They’re a great ensemble cast. The next generation is my era and I think that cast also pulls off that great team dynamic too.

Ria Grix

I have my criticisms of the Abrams movies, but I'm pretty sure Cassie will enjoy them. (I'm thinking of the first two.) If Cassie were to completely skip TNG, I wouldn't loudly complain.

Happy Hanukkah

Fun reaction, Cassie. A fun fact from this movie: One of the police officers in the hospital is played by Joe Lando who played Byron Sully on Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.

Mark Vaderr

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is the last one with the original crew and is a must. Star Trek: Generations is the crossover with the Next Generation cast.

Dustin Denner

The JJ Abrams movies just don't feel like Trek though. Like he wanted to turn it into another franchise. He self admits that he doesn't like Star Trek. And the second of the new movies was a total and complete letdown.

Kristin D

I hope this is the last one for awhile. Spread these out, Cassie.

Brent Petty

#6: Undiscovered Country is the last movie with Kirk and full crew. #7: Generations is the crossover. Or you can say first look at a multiverse lol

Jeremy

If you watch Next Generation episodes, make to watch Best of Both Worlds. Season 3 episode 26 and season 4 episode 1. That'll help with Star Trek 8: First Contact

Jeremy

Is it possible that Star Trek IV has just become my favorite of the Trek films simply because I rewatched it through Cassie's eyes?? 🤔

Brent Fugett

Cassie!!!! You make an absolutely proper Vulcan!

Brent Fugett

I agree. Most Trek fans don't seem to really like the TNG movies very much anyway, except maybe for First Contact. Seems like most TNG fans here mainly want her to watch a bunch of episodes of the show rather than those movies, so it would be better to just skip right to the JJ Abrams trilogy, as it's about the original series characters, and doesn't involve any of the other shows at all.

Stranger2Reality

Great ear reveal! After the final two original crew movies you should watch the 3 JJ Abrams reboot movies as they involve the original crew before you start TNG.

Andrew Roach

This film is just pure joy. Cassie I think you looked great with your Vulcan ears.

Don

I’m so excited for when you start watching Next Generation. I loved the original Star Trek but Next Generation took it to a whole nother level. You are going to love the next captain and others.

Ruben Cifuentez

next is Star Trek 5 then Star Trek 6 then watch some Star Trek the next generation then the crossover movie which is called Star Trek generations. Such a fun ride.

Jack Pflieder

ST6 is not the crossover - its the last one with all the original crew, ST7 is the crossover and 1st of TNG ST crew. ST6 is a must see

Inspired [*5] by this movie, here's the first track [*1], Captain Nemo [*2], of the album Dive [*3] by Sarah Brightman [*4]: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJwLZWUSK6Q *1 OK, it's the first two tracks, including the intro. *2 Yes, it's a cover. *3 "Its unifying theme is water and the ocean." *4 The original Christine from The Phantom of the Opera musical. [ADDED:] *5 By which I mean *I* was inspired to provide this link; not that the song itself was inspired by the movie. Good Lord, this is turning into a law review article. :-)

Just finished watching your reaction, and all I can say is…you are an absolute delight! I am smiling ear to ear because you are SO INTO THIS! And I’m loving it! BTW…you have two more movies in this series to watch before you get to TNG. The Final Frontier and The Undiscovered Country.

Dan M

My reactions to the reaction (apply smileys liberally): 0:07 No offence, Cassie, but your Vulcan salute sucks! 0:47 Yes, yes, you hair looks good... for a pointy-eared freak! 5:20 Who? Don't leave us on tenterhooks, tell us!!! 9:24 It's just a jump to the left... 12:26 Deus ex technobabble. 12:48 But of course. 13:08 Yes, Kirk, we see what you did there. 13:59 I am reminded of this clip, "The smartest Batman goon ever": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMd4S-LkywI 16:41: "The Kappamaki, a whaling research ship, was currently researching the question: How many whales can you catch in one week?" 17:09 They time traveled back from 2286 to 1986, so 300 years. 19:54 And Cassie wins this round of Le Mot Juste! 24:21 Ba-dumm-tss! 32:32 Agreed. James Brown is very disappointed. 33:49 Did someone call me? 35:00 Don't be silly, Cassie! Do you think they would actually dare kill a main character in a Star Trek movie? 35:54 ... and thanks for all the fish! 36:26 Cassie thinking she's God.

Happy Hanukkah

I bet someone gave those to her during a live stream. I don't know that for sure though.

Shawn Kildal

Uhura does big things in 5.

Mark Daniels

Marshmellon anyone?

Roger Germinder

Right. She was married to Will Decker.

Roger Germinder

Alameda definitely has that “island” mentality, and rolls up at 9pm most nights! Anything bad that happens is probably done by “outsiders.” But it’s quaint, and I finally made it to the flea market on the base about four months ago. I prefer to visit the drinking holes that have popped up around the former base in recent years. Always quoting the classic Chekhov line regarding “wessels”!

Marja

I went to the College of Alameda for one semester and would occasionally go there on the weekends to that big flea market. I lived in Berkeley so going to Alameda felt like a trip back in time. And my brother in law was stationed there on the Enterprise during Vietnam. It’s been a while since I’ve been there. I moved to New York and would sometimes explain that Alameda is kind of the Staten Island of the West.

jdj830

Still don’t understand why people feel a need to let her in on the crossover. There’s no reason she should have been let in on this before she watched it🙄

Cole Jennett

I disagree slightly. Cassie wants to see Spock acting "more human" and in number 5 he definitely does that. "Row, row, row your boat"...

Chris

There are 2 more exclusive of this cast. 5 isn't the best, but it is sort of fun, then 6 gets pretty good again. Star Trek: Generations is the crossover episode, with castembers from both series'. I grew up on Star Trek, and I loved all the movies. I'm really enjoying how much you're loving them, too!

Chris

I think a lot of Trek fans don’t like The Final Frontier because of its theme. While its certainly not my favorite of the film series, it is canon. And if Cassie is committed to becoming a Trekkie, then she should watch it.

Dan M

Alamo Drafthouse in Austin is the greatest theater in the world IMO. I used to go to Fantastic Fest every year. Aptly named, because it is fantastic.

Just Plain Bob

"Weren't those a birthday present from Dr. McCoy?" "And they will be again. That's the beauty of it."

2-Can

Yeah Cassie. Where did you get the ears?

Jeffrey Schmidbauer

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is the dog in the bunch.

Jeffrey Schmidbauer

Feel free to skip V, most do. You can go right to VI and not lose anything.

Roger Germinder

About ten years ago Alamo Drafthouse theater in Austin had a whole day where they showed 2, 3 and 4. It was such a great time. Since childhood I'll still pick up a computer mouse, speak into it and say, "Computer," like Scotty. I'm so glad you're watching these Cassie!

Morgan A. Colbert

Seventh Heaven. The mom on 7th Heaven

Carol Rocha

What better occasion to recommend Big Fish (2003)? ("ACKSHOOALLY..." :-) ]

Happy Hanukkah

😂😂😂

Dan M

That one scene sabotaged my usage of GUIs* for 4 whole decades! (* More precisely, WIMPs. Happy now?)

Happy Hanukkah

The very important lesson from the truck scene is: "Don't do too much LDS." :-) (No offense intended.)

Happy Hanukkah

I had no idea Next Generation was on the list. You never get over your first, and they were my first Trek. Hope you enjoy them.

aarswft

There’s two more, and I think you will love ST6, so please stick around for that - which might be a challenge. I am not the only one who thinks 5 is the weakest of the series and if you skip it you won’t be lost. But please watch 6 before you move on to TNG. By the way, my brother-in-law served on the actual USS Enterprise depicted in the film during the Vietnam War. He was there when there was a major explosion on the ship in 1969. He got a big kick out of seeing the ship depicted in this film. Sadly he died two years after this film was released of cancer that may have been related to the chemicals he was exposed to in that explosion, at the age of 40. Anyway that was another great reaction Cassie!

jdj830

Alternatively, you could just lean on my expert opinion below ;) This list - in broadcast order - is my best reduction of the entire show into an even 30 episodes, covering most of the key ongoing storylines and best stand-alone episodes. Whatever your final list is, it should probably be taken from this (give or take - I'm sure there are other favorites I failed to include, though nothing I would consider essential). The *starred titles are those I would pick for Cassie if forced to narrow it to just 8. Probably. Cutting it down that much is REALLY hard to do :) Encounter at Farpoint Datalore A Matter of Honor *The Measure of a Man *Q Who Yesterday's Enterprise *Sins of the Father Sarek **The Best of Both Worlds 1&2 Family Brothers Reunion *Data's Day Clues Redemption 1&2 *Darmok Unification 1&2 Cause and Effect I, Borg The Inner Light *Relics Chain of Command 1&2 Descent 1&2 Lower Decks All Good Things...

Robin T

That's not quite what *I* was hoping for tonight. 😜

Happy Hanukkah

Awesome, right before bed.

Matt O'Keefe

I don’t care for any of the movies except First Contact which I would love her to watch. Picking just a handful of episodes would be difficult. Measure of a Man would need to be included for Data.

Kristin D

I can’t wait for her to watch VI!!

Kristin D

There's six, seven is the crossover.

Molly Campbell

A heartwarming reaction to a heartwarming movie! 🚀

Gabriel L.

As a Bay Area native and former Alameda resident, this movie has always tickled me!

Marja

Before "Okay Google" and "Hey Siri," there was "Hello Computer." 😂

Dustin Denner

I think this is the most main stream of the movie series, and a ton of fun. The scene in the truck when Kirk and Spock hitch a ride with Dr Taylor is hilarious. And, like most Trek content, it has a very important message and a lesson to be learned.

Dan M

I was hoping for I robot tonight, maybe tomorrow with any luck.

Brandon

So I had a thought about how to approach The Next Generation. I love hearing about how you've had some exposure to it as a kid because of your dad, and now of course we know just how big a fan he is because of the wifi password, lol. So perhaps he could choose some of the episodes you watch? As many have said, for various reasons we NEED more than 4 eps of the series. At LEAST 8 or 12 (I'm counting in multiples of 4 because I figure 4 eps per video). So a cool way to break it down would be one video covering the absolute essentials (Q Who and Best of Both Worlds Parts 1/2... which are required viewing for the films), one video featuring top picks by Patreon subscribers, and finally one "Papa Popcorn Picks" with episodes hand selected by your dad. Yes?

Robin T

I feel the same, except reverse the order 😁

Dan M

I think this is the best of the ST movies with the original TV crew. Though Wrath of Khan is a close second Thanks

Bill Maurer

Nice ears! Just a note about Scotty and the formula for transparent aluminum - in the novelization, it is confirmed that Scotty already knew that he was speaking with the inventor of transparent aluminum, so Scotty wasn’t changing history, he was fulfilling it. Also, if you didn’t figure it out or look it up, Gillian is the mom from the TV show “Seventh Heaven.” I’ve been enjoying these reactions. Really looking forward to Star Trek VI.

Dave Harrison

"How do we know he didn't invent the thing"🤣🖖💜

Paul Spacone

Loved this one so much, Cass! My wife and I have thoroughly loved watching the full reactions of the Star Trek films with you. Can't for you to get to Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country! It's my favourite one, and a beautiful farewell to Kirk and crew.

Justin Samlal

Such a fun movie 🎬 ❤️❤️❤️❤️
