Up this week!

Hey friends!!
Hope you’re having a good MLK Day, and that it can be hopeful and thoughtful for you. We are on our way home from a little weekend away to Ben’s brothers, it was chill and a little warmer than where we live so two thumbs up! Meanwhile….back home in Alberta they are literally in the polar vortex, it got to -50 degrees (in fahrenheit too) at some points. My parents were without water again. Stay safe and stay warm my Canuck kernels!
This week we have a little break from Star Trek, with I,Robot (which won the YT community poll of the 51-100 drawings) I’m randomly watching Tron because we head on our long awaited Disney World trip soon and there is a Tron ride and i just feel like that’s the responsible thing to do! Don’t forget about Crocodile Dundee, one of your suggestions for Australia Day next week! Coming up soon will be ST5, Three Men and a Baby (YT runner up) Presidents Week and of course some romance in February too ❤️❤️ I’ll be posting a Classic Romance poll (pre 1970) soon!
Just for fun
Currently watching….The Bear (Only ok for me, but feel like I’m in the minority with that opinion) Ben and I are also watching REACHER (I like it but it’s not GRABBING me) I have enjoyed watching the award shows highlights!
Currently Reading: My book club is reading The Silent Patient. Haven’t quite started yet but I’ve got a week! I’ve heard great things, have any of you read it?
Currently Loving: Planning out DW like it’s the most important exam of my life, I literally have worksheets. Fast internet, Valentines jellybeans are the best holiday jellybeans, coaching my boys basketball team and my heated electric blanket that i’m in a relationship with!
Thanks for being here guys ❤️❤️ Truly madly deeply
Cassie

I recommend The Dressmaker a really good Aussie movie.

I would include the original classic sci-fi film version "The War of the Worlds (1953)" and "War of the Worlds (2005)" with Tom Cruise. Both good and worth watching.

An excellent movie from Australia is "The Dish," as in the huge receiving antenna in Parkes, Australia. Humorous (not a comedy), charming, and based on a real event. Actors include Sam Neill (Jurassic Park) and Patrick Warburton (Seinfeld). I've mentioned it before in these posts, and hope that one day it gets some visibility because it is a very good movie. If not watched now, for sure schedule it for July to coincide with the anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission.

I watch the crucial votes at the end frequently. The South Carolina vote. "Here is your slavery, for all the good it will do you! Now vote damn you!" The James Wilson decision, and subsequent vote. "Every mapmaker in the world is waiting for your decision." "Revolutions, Mr. Dickinson, come into this world like bastard children... half improvised and half compromised. Our side has provided the compromise. Judge Wilson is now supplying the rest."

I liked Crocodile Dundee 1 and 2, but 3 was not as good as the other two. Paul Hogan was a huge comedian in Australia with his own tv show, The Paul Hogan Show, before the Dundee movies put him on the international scene. He created some of Australia's iconic comedy characters. Do a search for Paul Hogan on Youtube and watch some of his funniest skits.

I have been watching "1776" every Fourth of July for about 40 years, starting with renting the video tape from the local library, then on Laser Disc, and now on DVD. Every time John and Abbey sing "Till Then" it gets me, so it should wreck Cassie.

I am a giant fan of 1776. I know by heart four or five songs from the show, but it is 18th century C-SPAN with singing. If you're in a patient mood for it, the drama is fantastic, it totally works, and its great. But its nearly three hours, and its just... the main bulk of the story is its a government hearing with singing. Remember I like the musical!!!

And if you want a total change of pace... Two future presidents in John Adams and Thomas Jefferson - set 13 years before our first president, George Washington became president in 1789. The movie is "1776" Oops I just snuck in a musical. As an historian, and one who appreciates musicals, I enjoyed it. It came out in 1973. Cassie I am sure you know who Gweneth Paltrow is...her mom is in this movie...Blythe Danner. It's a way to learn a little history, be entertained with good humor, and clever musical tunes. It's amazing after how much went wrong early in the war, and that the US was able to win its revolutionary war in 1781. At that time, we were a nation of 13 states and 3.5 million citizens and 500,000 slaves. And that the Constitution would be written six years later and approved, without the Bill of Rights. It was only promised that one would be added. It's amazing how those first 10 amendments truly define what it means to be an American. Cassie and Carly if you ever want to take an amazing trip visit Washington DC Smithsonian Museums. There are many of them. There is one created for our Centennial in 1876. Everything in that building is as it was in 1876 it's a way to truly be a time traveler. I know your kids a very young, too young to appreciate the museums in 2024...but in a few years when they are older it could be a great experience. Even though it's a very long trip from UTAH.

"Young Einstein" is a movie I haven't thought about in a long time, and haven't seen in an even longer time. I enjoyed it when I was younger, and I honestly don't remember the last time it even played on Australian TV where I am. Not sure what I think about it these days.
It has some great Aussie actors in it. But I think it always reminds of the infamous Simpson's episode where they travel to Australia, and there is bit where Lisa is shown a picture that has a sign "Yahoo Serious Festival" and her response is "I know those words, but that makes no sense..."
It's a movie that fits into a list of about 4 movies that most international people think of when they think of Australian movies, as they are the one that had a big impact internationally, so it would likely:
* "Crocodile Dundee"
* "Young Einstein"
* "Mad Max" - (at least the character, depends of the age of the person, it could me "Mad Max 2" (aka "The Road Warrior") or more recently "Mad Max: Fury Road" but that may be considered less of and Australian movie based on the cast, but still the same character).
* "Australia" - because it is a movie called Australia that has some high profile Australian in it. Probably fits into the February theme pretty well to honest, with Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman with Baz Luhrmann directly. The app says Cassie has seen it.

I would argue the 80s rom-coms are generally poor compared to other decades. There are some Top 10, Top 50 movies listed previously. But the 1980s produced some of the best science fiction movies of all time so there is that. Also that's a lot of Nic Cage!!!

It still has a cult following and is definitely a 1980s pop culture reference (at least that one scene), but I wouldn't call the story itself memorable. I remember enjoying it when I watched it, but, with the exception of the "knife" scene, I don't remember anything about the movie. It didn't stick with me. Other films, include many I watched years before Crocodile Dundee, stuck with me so much I can still quote entire scenes of dialog. Dundee and it's star, Paul Hogan, have gone the way of pop culture icons Max Headroom and the Teddy Ruxpin. Still remembered by a select few and those of us who are products of the 80s, but not by most of those who grew up after that decade.

Yes Automan was definitely attempting to clone TRON. When you consider that when TRON was made there was no way to automatically animate things, that’s when you realize how revolutionary the film was. For instance, every single frame of the light cycle scene had to be entered as coordinates into the mainframe for rendering. Every. Single. Coordinate. And to have it come out so beautifully was a testament to their pioneering spirit.

Thanks for the info Jon! I know the original Tron is older with graphics that probably pale in comparison with what can be done today, but I kinda like those older VFX. And I know for the time it was groundbreaking. After all, Star Wars IV was released in 1977 and I thought those VFX were amazing.

If Cassie passes on Coming To America yet again, I'll denounce her to HUAC! :-)
For Michael J Fox, I'd prefer The Secret of My Success (1987) or For Love or Money (1993), on the strength of his romantic interests (Gabrielle Anwar and Helen Slater).
Another interesting Keanu Reeves rom-com is Destination Wedding (2018), opposite Winona Ryder, but I hesitate to recommend it*. Unless you are favorably predisposed to the leads and are willing to put up with (very) flawed main characters, and even then, ... well, you're better off watching Coming to America for the twentieth time.
[*I enjoyed it (and respected the effort), but it was touch-and-go.]

It doesn't qualify for *Classic* Romance, but if we're including more recent fare, I'll nominate Intolerable Cruelty (2003). It's a Coen brothers film starring George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones. (Please don't let the title throw you off.)

Sounds like you and the fam had a relaxing, and warmish (not sure if thats a word, but by golly it should be!) few days. Nice line-up of movies coming! Is this the original Tron or the sequel? I'm mostly enjoying the Reacher series. Huge fan of the books. Unpopular opinion coming... The 2 Reacher movies with Tom Cruise... Really good. Cruise, while diminutive in comparison to the Reacher character, brought the Reacher intensity and intellect more so than the current one. Still, horses for courses, I know I'll enjoy all the upcoming reactions! That is until or unless you do a musical! Can't abide by that. ;)

I'm most excited for CROCODILE DUNDEE this week. Before you watch TRON, I think it is worth knowing that it is going to show its age and feel dated visually. It was made during the infancy of such effects. Personally, I've only seen it before the sequel came out and I do like that one more. Also, I hope THIRTEEN DAYS with Kevin Costner is considered for Presidents Week.
I do have a couple of more recent romantic movie suggestions for February where the leading man is one of Cassie's favorites. Movies, that I'm surprised she hasn't seen yet (or they are just not marked as one):
WORKING GIRL (1988) with Harrison Ford
DOC HOLLYWOOD (1991) with Michael J Fox
FOREVER YOUNG (1992) with Mel Gibson
A WALK IN THE CLOUDS (1995) with Keanu Reeves
SIX DAYS SEVEN NIGHTS (1998) with Harrison Ford
THE LAKE HOUSE (2006) with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock
FOOL'S GOLD (2008) with Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson
PS: also, February might be a perfect opportunity to finally make COMING TO AMERICA (1988) with Eddie Murphy happen.

Since you’re coaching a Basketball team, it makes sense to put up a Basketball poll. Also suggesting Any Given Sunday with the Super Bowl right around the corner, and Malcolm X for BHM, it’s been long overdue IMO.

Tron is okay... for a low budget early 80s,movie (I actually liked the 2010 sequel better, though others don't). Crocodile Dundee is okay... for a low budget mid-80s movie. I remember watching it on video with my family a few years after it came out. Enjoyable, but ultimately forgettable. I really enjoyed I, Robot. There are a significant number of others who don't because the ideas in it strayed so far from the premises created by Issac Asimov in his short stories (Three Rules of Robotics, etc). What is funny is that, although the movie shares the name of one of Asimov's collection of short stories, the original film is derived from Agatha Christie. I think the story is is very good. The performances are good, too. Especially the voice and motion-capture acting by Alan Tudyk. Tender and chilling in equal measures.
Looking forward to Star Trek VI (The last original cast movie) than I am the 5th), But I REALLY am interested to see you watch another Leonard Nimoy directed film—Three Men and A Baby.
Now if we could just get your Patreons to vote for Pleasantville.
My wife and I just finished the second season of Reacher. It's okay. Supposedly the books are better. The Tom Cruise Reacher films aren't bad. My wife is reading the books now and seems to enjoy them. I need to start reading again soon (I have a big backlog), but I'm more interested in completing the writing on my second novel.
If you want to get into an excellent show (if you haven't already seen it), check out Ted Lasso. ...... of course, you have all those seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation coming up...

Hey Cassie: I was in Walt Disney World in December. A few things on the TRON ride:
1. it's based on the sequel, not the original. The aesthetic, the music, everything...if you can, watch the sequel, TRON: LEGACY before you go.
2. It's a great ride but it's much too short, especially for the trouble of getting into the virtual queue. The GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY ride at EPCOT is 10x the ride that TRON is.

If you’re gonna do something for President’s Day, my vote goes to All The President’s Men, co-starring Robert Redford. It chronicles a really important chapter in Presidential history and is a great movie. Also worthy of consideration is Thirteen Days starring Kevin Costner. The first focuses on the wrongdoings of the Nixon Administration and the second deals with Kennedy’s response to the Soviets putting nuclear missiles in Cuba (the Cuban Missile Crisis). Both are superb.

Also, you might want to consider the Broadway shows on your date(s) at the American pavilion. They take real broadway stars of the Disney shows and bring them in to do the concerts. Nice line up! I haven’t seen Tron at all, so looking forward to enjoying it with PIB. Crocodile Dundee is lots of fun. ST IV, my 2nd favorite in the movie series after Wrath of Kahn. And First Blood is Stallone at his 2nd best (after Rocky and Rocky II).
I totally understand you’re planning strategies for your trip to Disney World. I just went with my family over the Thanksgiving holiday and planning it out was a month long event. One important piece of advice Cassie…download the DW app if you don’t have it already. Its the only way to get on the Tron ride. There is no stand by line…only a virtual line. And be prepared to get on that virtual line as soon as it opens. We got on within the first minute that it was available at 7am and our call group was still at 6pm 😤 However, while no ride is worth that kind of a wait, it was a great ride! Hope you all have a great time!

There's five movies in the franchise, not three, just FYI.
But your comment illustrates what I'm referring to, as you think of John Rambo as "the lone hero" because that's definitely not at all who he was in that first movie. They took a complex, morally questionable and disturbed character from the first film and turned him into an absurd almost superhero in the sequels.
It's totally fine if you like the sequels version of the character, but he's quite different in those movies than the guy who has a complete breakdown at the end of the first one, and who is dealing with postwar PTSD in First Blood. The rest of the movies in that series are quite different after that first film. If you don't see a difference, then we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Amen. It’s an awful movie with no relation to the stories by Isaac Asimov beyond the name of the movie and the names of some characters. In fact, much like the travesty “I Am Legend”, which also starred Will Smith, the “lessons” to be derived from the movie are the exact opposite of those intended by the author. But, hey, it’s got lots of pretty computer drawings so lots of people like it.

As an Australian, I wouldn't have recommended Crocodile Dundee. I know it is high up the list on Popcorn Requests, and it is good movie and worth a watch (I will watch because I haven't seen it completely in a long time). It just seems a bit like a tourist destination of a film these days. I would have gone with some things that aren't necessarily as well known, such as the "Strictly Ballroom" or "The Dish" both of which have a bunch of things for Cassie to engage with and enjoy, while still servicing a bunch of things thematically around the timing with other movies that have been or will be watched in the next while.

You watched First Blood? I love that movie but I hope it wasn't too much for you! Personally I would not continue with the Rambo movies after that one, even if you liked First Blood. The rest of them are not at all like that one and get really ridiculous real fast.

The Tron ride is more closely based on the sequel, but they're technically in the same universe, so it works! There's lightcycles in both. 😁

Watching Tron before the Tron ride is indeed the responsible thing to do. Some might say, the logical thing to do.

Did you know Rambo: First Blood was filmed not too far out of Vancouver in and around the town of Hope, BC. I hope you had your knife ready for watching Crocodile Dundee.

When she watches Three Men and a Baby (1987), I wonder if Cassie will spot the notorious "ghost" in the film!

Another top requested movie is welcome in Croc Dundee and I haven't seen Tron in ages so they both balance out the travesty that is I, Robot. A lopsided week for sure, sometimes you have to take the good with the bad, but the ugly is usually to be avoided. Palatable only with Cassie!

Think we will get "The Searchers" before we see "Enter the Dragon."
Happy New Year and safe travels. I do enjoy your channel and thought you and Carkly's reaction to "Ransom" was one of the best.
I hope "An Affair to Remember" is on your February list

Not one of these I'm not hyped to see the reaction. Especially Tron. Special place in my heart from childhood.

Stick with the bear. Those people are kind of abrasive at first, but you'll get it.
