My friend used to like to say... of all the souls I've met in my travels... His was the most huuumhan! He would always blurt out that last part having lost control of his composure.

I was crushed as a kid that the didn't bring Alley back. She said the reason she didn't return was because they offered her a bigger part in III but less money, so she said no.

On YouTube, you can see a vintage clip of Siskel and Ebert's review of Star Trek 2:The Wrath of Khan (1982) with both giving it thumbs up. Siskel even states at the start of the review that despite that he didn't like the original Star Trek TV series nor the first Trek film, he really enjoyed Wrath of Khan, calling it a pleasant surprise. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmxskKnA1Hc

Oh damn this film! I love it so much. I must have seen this dozens of times since I was a kid and I STILL cry for Spock and Kirk. Spock’s sacrifice without any hesitation and then Kirk’s determination to save him and the realization he can’t. But the big moment is when Kirk’s voice breaks at the service when he describes Spock as the most human. If I’m not crying by then that bit always hits me. Say what you want about these actors and these films but the last part of this film is just so emotional. Let’s get to the next one ASAP!

Don’t sleep on 6. That’s the movie that best captures the feel of the original series and feels like a return to serious business after the movies became increasingly campy and self-parodying (elements that start creeping in in 3, become fun in 4, and get absolutely intolerable in 5). 6 is an analogy of the thawing of the Cold War (Klingons = Soviets) that was happening at the time. It holds up better than 3 IMO.

Once when a cop pulled me over I said "beam me up Scotty" having no idea what that meant . He thought I was drunk but I wasn't of course.

Just to add my own overly long comment: I loved the movie as a kid but I also read the novelized version, which was great and included two subplots that didn't make the film: (1) You spend a lot more time with the scientists on the station, and (2) you learn a lot more about Saavik's backstory. Both cuts were good for the film's pacing, but the scientists were interesting and Saavik is fascinating. She's a half-breed like Spock, but she's half-Romulan, not human. When the Romulans abandoned her colony they left the half-breed kids behind to go feral. The Vulcans found them and Spock convinced the others they had a moral responsibility to take care of them. She is devoted to him as a mentor and has embraced Vulcan culture, but still struggles with control of her emotions. She was the math tutor to Scotty's nephew, and when he died she snuck off to a conference room and started ripping chairs off the deck in a rage, shearing right through the steel bolts. R.I.P Kirstie Alley.

Cassie, a few clarifications on story points that you asked about during the reaction. When Scotty made reference to “Christmas tree” he was referring to the manner in which he had to jury rig the ship’s engines and weapons - like the confusing jumble of lights on a Christmas tree. The reason that Kirk wanted to go into the nebula was to even the playing field. Spock informed him when he beamed up that the Reliant could still “outrun and outgun” the Enterprise, due to the damage inflicted by the initial attack. Entering the nebula eliminated those advantages. Neither ship had shields (so “outgunning” was no longer an issue) and both ships were blind (eliminating the “outrunning” advantage). Finally, when Spock told Kirk that Kahn was thinking two dimensionally, he meant that literally. Kahn’s experience in warfare was on old Earth, where fighting was limited to ground combat and limited aerial combat (that is, limited by the atmosphere). Spock’s point was that space combat takes place on a much larger scale, in all three dimensions. In other words, “up and down” (as much as anything in space can be considered up or down) has to be considered as well as “back and forth” or “side to side.” This gave Kirk the advantage, since he has experienced combat in three dimensions and Kahn has not. Notice that, after Spock offers this bit of advice, the Enterprise stalks the Reliant from behind and BENEATH (third dimension), striking the fatal blow.

Never found ST III "cringy". It wasn't as well written as the second, but it was okay (way better than the first movie of the series). Star Trek V, though... that one is very cringy. Bad comic version of Star Trek and violates the rules of the world Star Trek was built on.

Hello, Cassie, nice gift for the New Year! I am going to critique your marketing pitch for Factor a bit. Since I work in sales, I thought I’d throw out a few suggestions. First off, I’m thinking about trying Factor, so you’re doing damn good. But, I detect a sense of guilt when you’re doing the ad read. Just remember that you’re doing us a favor in telling us about new things. Sales is necessary to educate the public and improve their lives. Also, before you start a pitch, say to yourself, “This is going to go well.” Then just use your natural voice and personality. I have a colleague who used to go into “infomercial mode” in his demos. My company hired a consultant for $500 an hour to help him improve his demos. And she failed to help him find the issue. So, he asked me to pick apart his demo, and I attended, listening carefully. As it turns out, there was nothing wrong with his demo. It’s just the voice he was using to speak sounded infomercial. And his natural, genuine voice is extremely compelling. Thus, it was as though he was showing up to meeting in a Volkswagen when his natural cadence is a Ferrari. Anyway, your pitch is natural, and it’s great, just lose the guilt please. We’re fortunate to have you bring us new enhancements to our life, and you’re mixing in humor and entertainment. Your voice, like that of my colleague, is very compelling and brings people in. End of soap box speech. Another suggestion is just messaging. I’m thinking of trying Factor because I am tired of Door Dash drivers drinking my drinks and eating my meals. Since Factor isn’t a shared meal, or a meal that smells like cigarette smoke from the delivery driver; that’s appealing to me. Anyway, good pitch, you smoothie, knock ‘em dead, and remember, you’re doing us a favor by informing us about new things!

Your “Hello!” after Khan takes off his cloak (right after calling him a silver Fox!) was the funniest thing I’ve seen in ages. And you probably figured this out by now but that rookie Vulcan captain in training was Kirstie Alley in her film debut, who became better known in comic roles, most notably the owner of Cheers in the later seasons of that sitcom. For some reason she didn’t come back for the later Star Trek films so Saavik was recast. (Sadly she died a little over a year ago after a difficult life.) Anyway it was so fun watching this reaction, and so glad to see you loving Star Trek. I agree that it’s better than Star Wars, but it’s also a much messier universe to navigate. I’m torn between suggesting you go back and watch more episodes of TOS (which you need to do at some point; maybe in a few years you’ll watch them with your kids); skipping the next movie (which is useful plot-wise but is SO cringey) and watching Star Treks IV and VI instead (because you’ll love both of those movies, but V is even worse than III); and skipping even further forward to The Next Generation. But you’re on the path you’re on and I will be here with you for it wherever you go. Live Long And Prosper.

Let's just do all 168 episodes! And then all 172 of Voyager too. It would only take 2 years if we did 3 episodes a week.

Little trivia for you Cassie-In the longer director's cut there a scene that explains that dying crewman that Scotty carries to the sick bay is Scotty's nephew which explains why Scotty is more upset with his death.

Brilliant. I've been watching the funeral scene since it came out in the theater and I still well up to the bag pipes. I've always thought Star Wars hits you in the heart and Star Trek hits you in the intellect. But those times Star Trek hits you in the heart, it hits deep.
