[YT Edit] Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)

Comments

yes, chow yun fat, known for double guns, i guess like laura croft. the killer [made him], anna & the king [cant remember, clasic story, love jodi Foster] the replacements, i think - 1st cross over to the states, its ok. but i love this movie, the actresses are stunning!! LT

leo tierney

Great comments, wonderfully written.

Mike Smith

This is a beautifully shot, haunting, soul-filling film. One of my all time favourites. Subtitles don't bother me in the least. So glad you 2 watched it!

Mike Smith

There is another YouTuber whose channel is called "Chinese With Jessie." She (and sometimes her significant other, who speaks Cantonese) reacts to movies but also comments on the quality of the Chinese spoken. Jessie and Lee had a lot to say about the quality of the Mandarin spoken in CTHD which isn't surprising given that few of the principal characters were played by native-Mandarin speakers. But I found it really interesting that they rated Michelle Yeoh's Mandarin pretty poor in CTHD, but gave her Mandarin high praise in "Everything Everywhere All At Once." Evidently Michelle Yeoh worked hard in perfecting her Mandarin, which says a lot about her work ethic!

Please watch Hero with Jet Li!

Evan Eckstein

This movie has a version wich is dubbed in English, easier to understand.

Steve H

My first martial Arts movie was the early '70s -"Return of the Dragon" Starring Bruce Lee.

Steve H

I couldn't finish this one. Subtitles on a film I really didn't care too much to watch in the first place. 🫤

Louis Chapman

Aye. I was watching the YT edit. But it was still just too distracting. I couldn’t connect with it

Don

If you want to check out more Wuxia (this style of martial arts films), you might try the films by Zhang Yimou. His films Hero, Curse of the Golden Flower, and Shadow are all good, but my personal favorite is House of Flying Daggers. It also stars Zhang Ziyi who played Jen in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. House of Flying Daggers, in addition to being just a generally good movie, is visually stunning.

There’s actually a sequel on Netflix with Michelle Yeoh called Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny. It’s directed by the first film’s martial arts choreographer, Yuen Woo Ping. I haven’t seen it yet, but the average review describes it as “Ok” lol It was also filmed in English as I guess there was criticism from Chinese viewers in the first film that it was told in Mandarin, but only one of the main characters were fluent in Mandarin lol

Gilbert Gonzalez

I used to watch that all the time when I was younger lol I was so sad it didn’t last that long

Gilbert Gonzalez

Dear Ang Lee, We have decided to change the ending of your film. Could you please shoot some extra footage to add the finale. Yours sincerely Cassie & Carly.

Ria Grix

"Eat Drink Man Woman” is such a tender movie. I watch it every year.

Uncle Phoenix

Ok, Dave. That's helpful. Thanks.

Robert Jewell

That "Coming Up" post showed Shop and Scissorhands full length reactions coming to Patreon. She has not included Shop in any YouTube updates, and a Shop YouTube edit has not been released here on Patreon. We shall see what she has in store...

Dave

I've learned that I prefer the YouTube edit for this reason. The YT edit provides the "best of " reactions with much less "dead air." I don't need to see the entire film, I've already seen it and I know what came between the cuts.

Michael Gilbrook

Say, anybody remember the punnily-named TV show Martial Law? (Sammo Hung, with Kelly Hu and Arsenio Hall(!).)

Happy Hanukkah

Yes, but... If West Side Story won a poll of "gritty urban dramas," the grumbling would be understandable. Why, it would be nearly as bad as if Star Wars won a science-fiction poll! :-)

Happy Hanukkah

I'm not saying the second Ip Man isn't enjoyable (the tabletop scene is memorable), but I feel it's a clear step down from the first. (Not to mention that the second part is too much of a ... homage to another famous sequel (IV).)

Happy Hanukkah

This is a great film. But I don’t think this was a good one to have a reaction to. Everyone’s concentrating on the sub titles. Less reacting and less watching the reacting. Like I said great film which I’ve always enjoyed but I just didn’t enjoy watching along like I normally would.

Don

Some of the comments on this film remind me of when "West Side Story" was first released to theaters. "Who ever heard of gang members dancing in the street" or "Not another song"...... Please, people, show you have a little culture, otherwise you're only succeeding in embarrassing yourselves...-Just sayin'......🤔

Tombstone is a Marshall Arts movie. The Brady Bunch is a Marcia, Marcia, Marcia Arts movie. Love Actually is a Marital Arts movie.

Feel free to check out my comment below but crouching tiger has always (in my view) not just been a kung fu film. It talks about the essentials of both Chinese kung fu philosophy and Chinese philosophy, culture. Speaking as a Chinese American with my parents being on the traditional side I got to see every detail as capturing the cultural traditions and norms and how the very universal story of someone coming of age and discovering themselves comes into conflict with all the aforementioned social constructs. Adding to that the Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun Fat relationship which fits into how a “traditional relationship” would be. Both parties afraid to make a move because of both internal reasons and respect to their friend dear departed. Just my fifty cents. I think Cassie is breaking incredible ground with this one. Sure it was harder for them to understand and might be a leap instead of a walk into the genre but I’m happy this happened. I do agree she should see some smaller ones like Bruce Lee films.

AC5555

I loved the second Ip Man! Haha

AC5555

I think Memoirs is a great recommendation.

David Conroy

It's a mystery. Cassie had posted a "coming up" item and for one section were images from The Shop. . and Edward Scissirhands and one other film I think was Jingle All the Way without any preconditions, plus I'm on PIB Patreon so...

Robert Jewell

My interpretation too. She committed so many mistakes.

AC5555

This is such a great movie! I hope you add House of the Flying Daggers and Hero to your future-watch list. Also, if you like more Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi together, Memoirs of a Geisha is not a kung-fu movie, but worth it.

Calu

She was full of remorse over the things she'd done. She asked him to make the wish because she knew his heart was pure, not hers. She jumped out of guilt, and hoped his love would redeem her.

David Conroy

Yes and no. :-) Like you, I prefer "straight" martial arts (MA) movies, but Wuxia is a perfectly legitimate sub(?)-genre. I'd rather have an upfront Wuxia movie with its Cirque du Soleil MA than a straight movie that overdoes its MA past suspension of disbelief. (And there are way too many of the latter. Eg, IMO the first Ip Man was fine in this regard, while the second had me grimacing.)

Happy Hanukkah

My guess is that she did it as a Patreon exclusive this year and will release it to those of us in the cheap seats next year (which is what she did with White Christmas.)

jdj830

Let me get this straight: Carly is celebrating finally feeling better by... confining herself to bed for three hours? :-) (Love the little-sister vibes @ "charades." :-) )

Happy Hanukkah

PiB fans do it again 😄 Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is as much a martial arts movies as Maverick was a Western!😆😆😆 It's all wire work ballet 🩰. Cassie should have gotten Bruce Lee as her first martial arts film like she should have gotten Clint Eastwood as her first Western 🎤👇 But the good news is it can only get better from here!

Todzilla

honestly you should watch Enter The Dragon it really was the west waking up to martial arts movies, and became a template for a thousand movies since and to this day, Bruce lee will forever be the greatest, there may be better technical fighters, i don't know, but more charisma? never.

david smith

Fearless starring the legend Jet Li is mandatory.

Thanks for watching this one! Ang Lee is an outstanding filmmaker (one of my favorites) with an extensive filmography that taps into themes of repression, immigration, intergenerational conflict, and above all family. Most of all I appreciate how he deals with the very real situation of social ethics and cultural traditions coming into conflict with bids for self identity and exploration. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is along these lines, far more than just a martial arts film. It’s a romance film, a deep look at Chinese culture and philosophy, relationships, moral traditions and ethics, etiquette. History. Also of self identity. One of my all time favorite films. Zhang ziyi gets a lot of love and she’s great but I always connected more with the delicate relationship between Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun Fat’s characters. I also share the same birthday as Chow Yun Fat, and Michelle Yeoh is brilliant. Their restraint toward confessing their feelings really follows through on depicting conservative Chinese views on how you behave. For a long time, romance and marriages of love weren’t considered appropriate or proper. Everyone got married in arranged marriages. Chow and Michelle’s characters were friends and Michelle was married to someone Chow regarded with great respect. In a conservative society, it would be considered great disrespect and socially unacceptable for him to approach and consummate with his friend’s wife. Much more so for her because she was a woman. Zhang Ziyi’s character was a counter to that society. But she also did so many wrong things. Going behind Jade Fox’s back and learning new things. Disobedience to her master is the worst. She flirted with Li Mu Bai. She stole the sword and not only lied but used her power for glory and adventure. I also recommend seeing the Pushing Hands - Wedding Banquet - Eat Drink Man Woman trilogy, Sense & Sensibility, Brokeback Mountain and The Life of Pi. To answer your question about when this takes place, it’s set during Qing Dynasty China (which began ruling China in the seventeenth century and continued until it collapsed in 1912. I hope you’ll study Chinese more as it’s some of the most fascinating history ever. I’m biased because I’m Chinese American and all these stories about Chinese history are crucial to my childhood lessons and education. But yeah, I hope white people come to love China more. With Hong Kong martial arts films, particularly with Wushu and Kung Fu, a lot is fantasy especially with how people can fly from place to place but some of it isn’t completely true. In the art of wushu, Qigong is a real practice of finding inner peace and driving your energy into your body. They’ve even done demonstrations where they’ve balanced their chests on top of spear points and they used qigong to not be pierced by the steel. It’s that strong. With the hair men wear in this film, it’s called a queue. It was the hairstyle of the Manchu, the ethnic group ruling the Qing Dynasty. It became the mandated hairstyle for men under their rule. With martial arts films, it’s a huge genre and can be further extended to the Hong Kong Wuxia film genre. Chang Pei Pei who plays the Jade Fox is a famous actress of wuxia films and her character is the biggest criminal in the world. But yeah other films you can see include Hero, Once Upon A Time In China, Enter the Dragon, Wong Kar Wai’s Grandmaster, Donnie Yen’s Ip Man franchise… House of Flying Daggers.

AC5555

I’ve been waiting for it too and very much so because I’ve missed her reactions to classic cinema. I’ve been sad about the shortage of classics lately since it was my main attraction point to her channel. The fact that she watches old movies.

AC5555

Michelle Yeoh still amazing after so many years, such an underrated Bond girl as well.

LittleGalaxyBoy

Looking forward to this, but just a quick thought, what happened to The Shop Around the Corner?I thought it was on your Xmas list. Maybe I'm mixed up.

Robert Jewell

You could claim the Rocky series as Martial arts... 😁
