Ransom (1996) - Full Reaction

The tension in this one was just nonstop! Just when we thought things might settle down, they throw another curveball at us. Mel Gibson was so good in this! He really had us feeling every emotion. Hope you guys enjoy! Happy New Year!!

Ransom (1996) - Full Reaction

Comments

https://youtu.be/PToFI-yvn60?si=Rbgg44AoZHE0iePW&t=7169 - I don't know if I've ever seen anyone look more emotionally drained in my entire life than Cassie does at this moment.

Chris Breisch

That phone call gets me every time.

Abraham Walters

You two were hard to watch. I’ve seen this before and I knew what was gonna happen but you both kept me so emotionally invested, it was like I had never seen it. Great reaction.

Carol Rocha

The mama/auntie pain was real. Reminded me of watching this the first time. Ugh, I just wanted to hold their hands, poor things.

Esther Boogie

you broke my heart on this Cassie, the love of children is felt through the screen. It sucks seeing you and Carly hurt like that. As soon as you saw that boy chained and taped it was over for you, your anxiety showed through. this was tough to watch but a really good movie with messing with your emotions.

Jimmy Reyes

Oh my gosh! The anxiety of Cassie and Carly was almost unbearable to watch!

Steve Arnold

This movie I probably in my top 20 list. I saw this in the cinema back in 1996 when I was 13 and it made an impression. It’s one of those movies that I’ve only watched 2 times since, but it’s a real gem! I think I recommended this to you about 2 years ago, so I’m glad it’s finally ticked off the list!

Biggman83

that hurts my old, old heart... :)

Walter

What's a DVD?

Thoko

I ended up buying the dvd for this reaction and I am glad i did. I haven't seen this movie since the theaters back in 1996. Such a great film and I forgot how incredibly stacked the cast was.

Walter

I LOVE Payback. Such a great and really underrated film.

Walter

There's some of Kurosawa's "High and Low" in this. Also, Cassie, you probably know this by now, but two of the villains are played by guys you've really liked in other parts!

Ben Livingstone

Wow that was great! First time watch for myself as well. It was tough to watch along with you at times as you both were so invested in the situation. I had to sail the seven seas to find a copy of this movie as it's literally not available at all even for sale in Canada other than a used physical copy. I even checked my usual pawn shops for a used copy. No dice. My library system here has a copy in circulation but not even in our city so they were going to have to transfer it from another town which would have been weeks so I didn't feel too bad and doing what I did. I just feel like I kind of stepped up the pace a bit . Anyone on the edge it's well worth trying to track it down to watch along.a+--- ladies

Canadianant

You don't think Mel could be a bad guy? Watch 'Expendables 3'. I think this has to be the best reaction video I have ever seen. I am finally happy you two got to watch this movie.

JPDotCom23

Great movie and reaction, even if maybe just a wee bit dramatic. That’s what we’re here for though and I knew this would be a tough for y’all. Always remember this movie as the first ever DVD I ever saw.

SeanATX

I think Cassie is ready for the Mel Gibson Mad Max trilogy.

Scott Macaulay

I just used a free streaming site. I've watched it twice so far.

Brent Petty

Looked up this film and Gibson received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor for his performance in Ransom.

Brent Petty

OK. If anyone is interested... ransom is a remake of a film written by richard maibaum, who wrote thirteen of the original sixteen james bond films. If you add up the (Ru)ntime of every film he wrote... Slashing the Video and Cutting it all together... the total length of film would be approximately 4,501,072,513,574 minutes long. I could be a bit off on my math, but it still looks and sounds good. ;-) PS: I like to wear a Small Cap when I add. For some reason, I find it helps me focus and get to where I want to go faster.

Larry Darrell

Cassie if you handled Ransom, you're very close to being able to handle Doctor Sleep. Never thought I'd say that, but you are.

William Bryan

It's on the "already watched" list- https://letterboxd.com/pib1/films/

Mike Lemon

Kind of a forgotten 90s gem. Some other good Mel Gibson films from the 90s you'd enjoy: Conspiracy Theory with Julia Roberts and Payback.

Odd Thomas

My favorite Denzel movie by far and one of my favorites ever, but I'm not sure how much they would actually enjoy it. I know they'd appreciate it, but it's a lot of really rough stuff for an ultimately bittersweet pay-off.

Story Archer

For the love of god please watch - Man on Fire with Denzel Washington. Maybe one of his best movies

Kim Brink

I have seen that, I have two sisters who I used to live with.

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

Yo ho ho.

Carol_White

Depending on where you are, it's on Amazon Prime UK and a couple of streaming services (allegedly) in the states. DVD is easily available, Blu Ray not so much (I went to ebay as need region B). Amazon.com has the Japanese Blu Ray which should be Region A.

AdrianF

I use Express VPN for Netflix and some other UK stuff, but it doesn't work with everything.

AdrianF

I appreciate the link. I work in the film industry so I don’t pirate movies on principle but I don’t care if other people do it. I ordered the dvd. I do need to own this movie. I’ve just been waiting for it to become available. Thanks for the help though! 🙏

Jason Dolan

I watched this on a free site that has most movies, don't worry there's no adds either. There has only been a couple of times I have searched one and it hasn't been there. The site is https://lookmovie.click

Annie519

I wanna watch this. How do i even find it? Apple Tv, Youtube, Amazon Prime doesnt even have it.

TinCan Cosmanaut

This is such an emotional movie, and watching it with you two made it more emotional. I don't even have children, and I was on the edge. I can't even imagine what was going through your mind. You can never go wrong with a Mel Gibson movie. Now, you all need to watch Conspiracy Theory (1997). Mel Gibson is so believable in everything he does.

Eddie Perkins

This is such an underrated and great film, the tension is at it's best here and the performances are also great. They do a great job of putting you in their shoes. I can't imagine how scary it would be to have your child abducted or even missing. I don't have kids but I have several neices and nephews who are like children to me and the couple of the times that they have run off in a store or can't find them in the house to just discover them hiding under the bed or something is scary enough. I like that they portray the villains like real people, yes they were crazy but you saw them showing inner struggle to what they were doing. This was the first time that I saw Gary Senise be a bad guy and he did such a good job, honestly I wish he played a bad guy even more often. The one thing that does bother me is I wish Kate was a little more supportive, the first thing she does when Shawn goes missing is blaming him even though she was just a much to blame and then she honestly thinks it's about the money as to why he won't pay. I can understand disagreeing but if it were me and he told me why he thought that then I would support him as difficult as it would be. I felt bad for him that no one was on his side.

Annie519

Ladies! That was an amazing reaction. There were a number of times when I didn't think you ladies would be able to go on. This movie does put you through the ringer. Great movie. Great Reaction. I agree. Mel Gibson doesn't seem to make a bad movie. Thanks for joining for this reaction Carly. Cassie you should do a pole for Carly since she has a big birthday this month. A movie just for Carly.

Rick Williams

I found a VHS copy that I can send to someone if they have a working VCR 😂

Omar

Great idea 👍🏽

Omar

No gimmick at all. It was randomly picked in a drawing. I was not aware it was not available for streaming either.

Omar

I sent it also so glad it finally got watched 👍🏽

Omar

I think also you need to buy from a reliable vender like google or apple or Amazon

Jason Dolan

They are not legally obliged to refund. Until Sony reached a new (at least 30 month) agreement with discovery they were not offering refunds to any purchased content that was going to removed from their platform.

AdrianF

Cassie and Carly, I feel a little bad because of how raw your reactions were. I thought you’d enjoy Mel Gibson and Renee Russo together. but didn’t factor in how hard the plot might hit you. Hope your emotions have recovered. And if you want a cleanse for how much of a bad guy Gary Senise was in this one, just remember he was the super smart Astronaut on the ground in Apollo 13 that helped them figure out how to power the capsule back up and save the day.

Omar

Cassie, you have a big heart! 🧡

Mike LL

I was right there with you the entire time Cassie. Each time you saw the kid you got so emotional. Seeing you cry made me cry even though I have seen this. This is exactly why I would strongly advise against GOT because every other episode people you like you. Die medieval deaths or worse. You would be beside yourself. I think you should do a Cassie poll come up with a list of movies that are more your style like Fried Green Tomatoes. Just a thought.

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

guys should we sisterhood of the travelling pants the dvd? ill send mine to someone and then they can watch it and send it on the next guy.....

Cassie

You've nothing to be embarrassed about Cassie when your reaction is genuine. "I would press on the bullet wound !!!" That really cracked me up.

John Drake

Yes!, a second person recommending The Man Without a Face (1993).Such a good movie but it never gets mentioned.

Mike Lemon

Second that! Man Without A Face is such a hidden gem.

Blake Evans

Carly if you're a fan of Mel watch A Man Without a Face. Was the first film he directed and is one of my favourites with him. Also check out The Bounty. You won't be disappointed. Loved this reaction.

mattosh79

Wow! That’s was quite the emotional roller coaster! First off, I would like to wish Happy New Year to you Cassie and Carly! And to the entire PiB community! What a way to kick off the new year! I wasn’t there when you picked this movie during the Live. And I don’t know what other movies were on the poll. But I felt a little bad seeing how strongly this film affected you guys. That being said, the movie and the reaction were excellent. I hope you guys were able to come back down and relax after watching the film. Great start to the year ladies!

Robert da Spruce

When I visit the bathroom wearing white pants, I always ask myself: is today Jimmy Shaker Day?

ArsTropica

Wow! Did you two sleep that night? I mean, that was one of the most intense and raw reactions I've seen in a while. You could feel the tension in the air and the anxiety, especially from Cassie. Good thing Carly was there, I don't think Cassie could have handled this alone. I love how you two get so emotional and can connect with the stories and the characters so deeply. That's why I watch you. You are true empaths, and your feelings make the reactions so immersive. I've seen this movie a long time ago but could only remember one scene, the interview with the reward. So, throughout the reaction I wasn't sure how it's going to end. It is a really good thriller. I hope we'll be seeing more of such random DVD polls giving a chance to these more hidden gems. I have a Mel Gibson suggestion for February, FOREVER YOUNG (1992). It's a romantic movie starring him and Jamie Lee Curtis. Also, Merry New Year! Beef Jerky Time! 🥳

Gábor Árki

For everyone looking to stream the movie. I haven't found it but, the special edition is available on Amazon for $5.99 with 2 day delivery for prime members. This is the same copy I bought Cassie. I hope this helps those who wanted to buy it but, couldn't find it.

Katie Jackson

This movie was on TNT on demand with commercials. It was a challenge to keep it synched, but that's half the fun. Loved the reaction, but felt so bad for you when you were crying!

sharkey197

You Two are greatly empathetic and it is a joy to watch movies with you… even one’s like this, because I am right there with you, having the same emotions. I know what Carly is talking about when she mentioned watching movies with people who don’t react themselves to the movies they are watching. You are supposed to put yourself in the film and open your heart and mind to what the characters are feeling. It can be a healthy cathartic experience in which Things can be learned about Oneself. Not everyone is able to travel the world and see and feel the Wonders of the World first hand. Or be able to see and feel the Hardships of others, that can help Someone grow into a better person. However, through the Magic of Film, one can allow themselves to experience… even if only for 2 - 3 hours at a time… Amazing and Wondrous Moments or Moments of Despair. No matter which, they can all help One to realize certain Life Fulfilling Moments of their own. Well that’s my Deep Thought to start the year with… Anyways… An awesome New Years Movie that would have been great to preface this film could have been… The Time Machine (1960) This is the film that Shaker was talking to Mullen about, with the Eloi and the Morlocks. The film takes place on New Years Eve, and it’s always fun when a character asks, “Have you seen this film?” And Cassie raises her hand and says, “I have.” It’s a Classic too, by the way. Lastly… I’ve recommended a film before, and here it is again. No Escape (2015), with Owen Wilson, Lake Bell and Pierce Brosnan. This is one of those Healthy Cathartic Experiences that every parent should have. Happy New Year… to Cassie, Carly and the whole PIB Family. PS: Don’t forget to eat some Black-Eyed Peas. My Mom just dropped off a hot pot. :-)

Larry Darrell

Gary Sinise is such a good actor. The fact that you can find him so despicable in this movie given how much he is liked in other big movie roles (Astronaut Ken Mattingly in Apollo 13, Lt. Dan in Forrest Gump, etc). I count this movie among the most tense suspense movies like Air Force One & The Fugitive.

D. T. Nelson

All time best reaction? Most intense reaction ever? I don't know, but this one is going on a list. I really had to feel for Cassie and Carly being put through the wringer on this one. Only those who have a great sensitivity for other people, and children, AND who were not raised on a steady diet of violent thrillers could have had such a reaction. I am sorry that Cassie and Carly had to put themselves through all of that for our entertainment benefit, but boy was it entertaining! And gut wrenching!

Mike LL

Happy New Year Cassie and Carly. This is a good movie. Can't wait to watch your reactions tonight.

Rick Williams

I knew you would enjoy this an absolute roller coaster ride very emotional. good performances by first rate actors, Mel Gibson, Rene Russo and Gary Sinise

Doc Larry

They’d be legally obligated to return your money i would think. I buy all my movies thru google so I can access thru YouTube.

Jason Dolan

Sure, they can. The fine print usually details that by purchasing the movie you are not purchasing the content, but only access to the content as long as it is available on the service. It has happened before and I'm sure it will happen again. I don't recall which European VoD service it was, but few years ago their licencing deal expired with Studio Canal and couldn't agree. As a result, people lost access to all SC content they purchased on the platform. Not long there was some noise that Sony's licencing deal with Discovery expires so they notified all their users that all Discovery content people had purchased in the Playstation VoD will be removed. But they reached agreement before the content has been removed. It's been a while, but when Microsoft closed their Zune service, people lost access to all the music they purchased there. I believe at least Microsoft had the decency to provide some refunds.

Gábor Árki

Oh I can't wait to see this. I saw this at the theaters and I remember a particular spot went through me like lightening.

Brent Fugett

Can someone recommend a VPN for VOD. I use Avast VPN and it is not helpful for VOD, because it gets flagged and then the VOD provider won’t work with the VPN on.

Uncle Phoenix

For streaming yes but if you buy it they can’t take it away. Yes they can Maclunkey it but I myself am a short term rental on this planet and I like to have access to my entire collection when I travel but I do own about a thousand dvds and blu Reys as well. I ordered a RANSOM DVD though so I should have by Friday. Thanks for the advice!

Jason Dolan

If you want to avoid situations like this, I suggest purchasing on physical media instead. Digital ownership is a myth. When you buy something online, you are not really buying it, but sign up for long-term renting. The service provider can take it away from you at any time, if they lose the rights to distribute it or they shut down their platform. Or just alter it, like Disney did with SPLASH or THE FRENCH CONNECTION.

Gábor Árki

Amazing Reaction! I hope it wasn't too traumatizing for you guys. I do think this was easily one of the most intense reactions of yours I've ever seen. I was feeling pretty bad about sending it to you. Although I knew it had a happy ending. I wouldn't send you anything with a terrible ending. I don't like those kind of movies either. I'm glad you "enjoyed" the movie. I hope you'll also react to Conspiracy Theory when you're ready for another action/thriller. It's not as intense as Ransom and there are no children involved. It does star Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts and Patrick Stewart ( you'll get to know him more through Star Trek). Can't wait for next week. Hoping you'll be watching Star Trek 3!

Katie Jackson

Well I waited all week long to watch this with you guys and I can’t. I can’t find it streaming anywhere. Anyone know how to get around this or where to find it? Haven’t ever had this problem with any other movie I’ve watched on streaming. I’m very disappointed.

brooke atkins

I bought Cassie this movie on Amazon and sent it to her to watch. It was randomly chosen on the last live. It's not any kind of pay gimmick and, Cassie would never do anything like that.

Katie Jackson

If you're watching on a computer I download a torrent file from bt4gprx.com, download using qBittorrent, and watch on potplayer. All programs generally free of dodgy software

Hail to the King

It says that it can be watched on Apple TV+ but I have Apple TV and can't find it there either. This is incredibly frustrating. I don't think you can even rent it on Amazon Prime.

Story Archer

Does anyone know how I can actually watch this along with the reaction? I normally watch them side-by-side on my computer, but the movie can only be played on phone or TV aps. Sounds like other people are having trouble watching this reaction as well. It seems an odd choice to watch something so difficult for the community to participate in - I hope this isn't some sort of pay gimmick.

Story Archer

I have now way to stream this movie, but as I recall it was a good one!

David

I love this movie but I don't have the ability to purchase it - can't wait for it to be made available for digital ownership - I'll never forget watching it with my mom in theaters and when the big twist happened, she turned to me, like holy shit - I think watching my mom watch movies was where my love of watching reactors was born - she had the best reactions. When we watched The English Patient that same day (we did a double feature) she nearly broke my hand in that one scene with Willem DaFoe, she squeezed it so tightly! haha. Still not sure why you can't Purchase this film to own on Google TV - the licensing is always so odd to me, the reasons why a movie, like COCOON, is not available and lost forever. at any rate, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Jason Dolan

There was also the FBI agent who she saw as the cop in Gone in 60 Seconds.

Mike Lemon

Happy new year!!

Cojuancidence

Yes! I sent her Conspiracy Theory along with Ransom hoping she'd do both.

Katie Jackson

Mel Gibson is such a great actor (and director of other movies). Ron Howard directed this one and did an amazing job. I have always loved this movie because it keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end and the good guys win. Happy ending. Great reaction... I felt your anxiety. If I didn't already know what happened, it would have been hard to take, I think.

Phillip Bates

Always loved this movie. Its such a roller coaster. Who knew that Lt Dan could be so evil. Also fun fact, Cubby (Donnie Wahlberg) played the skinny guy in the bathroom at the beginning of the Sixth Sense.

Blake Evans

I am in the UK and watched on Amazon streaming. Frame rate was different so I had to keep adjusting through the whole movie to stay in sync. That's how much I have been looking forward to this reaction!

Dazman

Always been one of my favourites. That phone call scene where they are shouting at eachother is one of the most intense scenes ever. "GIVE ME BACK MY SON" gives me goosebumps every time. Twists and turns. Nobody does grieving rage like Mel Gibson!

Dazman

What a way to kick off the new year with a Mel Gibson thriller from the 90s, but they left out Murtaugh, lol…always liked this one but haven’t seen it in several years; curious what my reaction will be since I became a first-time father this past year! FYI: the child actor is Nick Nolte’s son in real life

JL_83

Great reaction. Mel Gibson is at his best in the scenes with heavy emotion, and Ron Howard knows how to create tension. The kidnapper was Gary Sinise, who you'd know as Ken Mattingly in Apollo 13 and Lt. Dan in Forrest Gump. He has also received MANY honors for his charity work involving veterans. You know Donnie Wahlberg as Lipton in Band of Brothers. Carly would probably know Rene Russo as Thor's mother in the MCU movies. Happy New Year! PS: Here's a tribute video thanking Gary Sinise for his efforts to help veterans and first responders. Watch it so you don't hate him :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7nCYnFsBqs

Brent Petty

Oof. I collect physical but yeah, 80usd is crazy. Hopefully my eBay one arrives, seller only has 3 ratings.

AdrianF

Carly knows Renee Russo as Thor's mom. Random thoughts: There was a time after this movie where my and my brother couldn't stop saying "GIVE ME BACK MY SON!" to each other as immature preteens. Man, it's been quite a while since I've seen Liev Schreiber in a movie where he was so young. Forgot this was the first thing I saw him in. I also even as a kid felt a little sick to my stomach whenever it cut to scenes of the kid on the bed. I realized when I was younger and watched this it never even occurred to me that Mel's character might jump off the roof in that scene, I assumed he just walked outside to be alone and not break down in front of everybody.

YodatheHobbit

There's loads of stuff that's gone missing, including some really high profile titles. True Lies and Abyss never got a Blu Ray release, though 4K is coming finally now. Free Willy is basically unobtainable for a reasonable amount of money on Blu Ray as another random example, although that does have an HD version digitally.

AdrianF

80 bucks on amazon… 🏴‍☠️

djKENTO

Gary Sinise was also in The Stand, which is of course his best role, no question ;)

AdrianF

To continue your Mel Gibson rabbit hole (and add Julia Roberts who I know you love, as well as prime you some for later Star Treks, Patrick "Captain Jean Luc Picard" Stewart, aka, Charles Xavier from Marvel fame) I would suggest "Conspiracy Theory". The timing could not be better, really. Mel and Julia have seriously elite on screen chemistry and do an amazing job in this one. And I promise it will check all of your favorite boxes!

David Collins

Oh man, this movie really got you guys going good in the third act.

KTVindicare

That’s interesting. I wonder why. Good thing you found a copy.

Ike

Donnie Wahlberg is a great actor. He sings in the boy band New Kids on the Block, but he was amazing in the 6th sense, he was amazing in the World War 2 mini series Band of Brothers, he's starred in the tv show Blue Bloods for like 14 years now. I think he's a better dramatic actor than Mark. Gary Sinise (the ring leader/cop) was Lt. Dan in Forest Gump, Apollo 13, Of Mice and Men, Snake Eyes, but he's been in a few great films. Great actor. Mainly known for his humanitarian work w/ Vets anymore.

Ryan Towell

I paid 50usd for a used blu ray off ebay. It's on Amazon UK Prime allegedly but my VPN doesn't like it.

AdrianF

Wow this one is really difficult to get hold of (legally) here. It's on UK Prime, a couple of things streaming in US but nada where I live. Ended up getting a region free bluray off eBay.

AdrianF

I remember watching this movie (a Ron Howard film) in the late 90's and liking it. Liking how decisive and agressive the Mel Gibson character. Unfortunately, this movie does not seem readily available in the US. Justwatch lists TNT and truTV.

Clay F

I just VPNed my way around the whole world and didnt find it anywhere on Netflix. Youtube offers it. Never baught a movie on Youtube, guess now is the time to try it out

Dioskur

Found a site that shows it. BiliBili. Never heard of it before, looks like buffering is an issue. Probably because every member of PIB has been looking for it and is watching it right now. 😄

Brian McGovern

Must be a title that has wound up in limbo. Not available in Australia either. No streaming service, no apples tore, not on YouTube.

Brian McGovern

Oooohkay! Out of the blue you start the year with one of my all time fav thrillers! Now I know how I will spend this very tired evening! Curious how you will like "Jimmy Shaker day" :) (its one of the best villian lines ever!)

Dioskur

Shockingly not available streaming in the US anywhere. Can’t even buy it on VOD. Very weird.

djKENTO

Happy new year

Rodger

Great movie

Rodger

Happy New Year Cassie! I think it's amazing you guys were putting this together New Year's morning. I can wait to watch movies with you in 2024.
