Edward Scissorhands (1990) - Full Reaction

The struggle! We have a sickie sickie sick sick house, it's breaking my heart that my kids are sick for Christmas and I can feel it coming for me, but I'm refusing it. This movie was actually more enjoyable than I thought it would be, and I think it may be my favorite Tim Burton film I've seen? it was weird but heart warming?? However, I don't know if this is a "Christmas movie" guys haha... still fun though!
I'll write more about it tomorrow, but I wish you all the Very Merriest of Christmases!

Finally got around to watching this reaction. I haven't seen this movie in so long, I had pretty much forgotten most of it, and the stuff I did remember made me wonder why it was in a Christmas poll. Johnny Depp was excellent in this movie. It kind of reminds me of his performance in Benny & Joon (1993) with the minimal dialog. In fact I'm going to watch it right now! 🍿
P.s. Another Johnny Depp movie I like is Mortdecai (1995). It's a slapstick comedy also starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor and Paul Bettany, to name a few. Excellent movie. Highly recommend it.

I knew you'd like this one. Now do young Tom Cruise in LEGEND.
My favorite Johnny Depp movie is always going to be Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas directed by the inestimable Terry Gilliam of Monty Python fame. I'd love it if you did a bunch of Gilliam movies. I don't know if you'd *like* them necessarily but you would no doubt find them interesting and your reactions would certainly be gold.
LEGEND you would love. If you don't, I'll eat a bug.

I can hold with that. But in doing so, it make Lethal Weapon perhaps the greatest Christmas movie of all time as it deals with all those themes, plus, love, loss, family loss (x 2), a loving family, the hypercommericalization of Christmas, and, of course, vengeful international heroin dealers and pummeling Gary Busey into a pulp on your best friend's lawn.

“I haven’t seen a lot of johnny depp movies. Hmm why do i like him then??”
Because hes johnny depp!!!! Thats why!!! 🤣🤣 His story how he became a star is actually quite interesting. This movie though actually makes me cry at times- he really makes you feel for the character- his eyes and his facial expressions- i just want to hug him- well you know, carefully.
My opinion of johnnys best: fear and loathing in las vegas, blow, benny and joon, public enemies. And i actually liked the lone ranger. Oh you would love benny and joon!!

Merry Christmas, Cassie. So sorry to hear about the sicknesses in your household. Hope everyone comes through it all right.
I know your history with Tim Burton films has not been great so far (though I do recall you somewhat enjoying SLEEPY HOLLOW), but I had a feeling that you would like this one in spite of it sad ending. It's a beautiful, heartfelt tragic love story/ fairy tale (sort of a modern FRANKENSTEIN meets BEAUTY AND THE BEAST / PHANTOM OF THE OPERA / HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME) and it was only Burton's fourth feature film (after PEE-WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE, BEETLEJUICE and BATMAN) and it was the one that cemented him as the hot new filmmaker in Hollywood with a distinct vision and style. His bizarrely gothic yet simultaneously sweet tone became a signature that other directors started to try to imitate with less success. This was basically when he became "TIM BURTON!" This was also, up to this point, his most personal film. Many of his stories involve outsiders who feel marginalized by society because that's how he's felt his whole life with his own weird, wacky sensibilities. He identified heavily with the character of Edward and even gave him the same hairstyle that he (Burton) wears
This was also the first in a a series of collaborations between Burton and Depp. It started Depp's whole Kabuki style of acting (where he plays extremely eccentric characters buried under mounds with strange makeup: Willy Wonka in CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY Jack Sparrow in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, Tonto in THE LONE RANGER and the titular character of SWEENEY TODD). Many don't like these performances and prefer it when he plays a more normal human being, but I enjoy many of them myself as well as his more understated portrayals. He really is a very unique actor.
A couple other Tim Burton films that I think you would enjoy (and are generally considered among his best) are ED WOOD (also with Johnny Depp) and BIG FISH (which actually stars SCROOGE's Albert Finney), the latter one would be a great Father's Day reaction as it is a very emotional father/son story.
You're probably too young to know the guy who played the inventor, but his name was Vincent Price, a marvelous actor known for doing scary movies throughout his career, but he also lent his distinct voice to the villainous character of Rarigan in Disney's THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE as well as providing the rap to Michael Jackson's iconic song "Thriller." Was a little surprised you didn't recognize the father character as being Alan Arkin, the grandfather from LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, but was very pleased to see you recognize Diane Wiest.
One final word on the film. The music is simply gorgeous and is one of the best scores written by the genius that is Danny Elfman, my favorite composer (after John Williams) and a frequent collaborator with Burton. You also heard his music in BEETLEJUICE, BATMAN, SLEEPY HOLLOW and the first MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE.
Anyway, glad that you gave this movie A chance. Happy holidays. :)

Love this movie. I’m fine with calling it, or any movie, a Xmas movie. What bugs me is people saying something like Die Hard is not a Xmas movie, but saying It’s A Wonderful Life is the best Xmas movie, when that movie doesn’t have anything to do with the holiday until the end.

you're right, I generally don't. I liked Batman when I was a kid. Ed Wood is pretty good. I liked Sleepy Hollow when I saw it. Nightmare Before Christmas is an overrated classic. The Day-O scene in Beetlejuice...I think that's where my Burton joy ends.

I enjoyed your reaction. This wasn’t on my Tim Burton favourites list when I was a kid but it was a highly enjoyable rewatch. Alan Arkin in particular is always a highlight.
My favourite Depp is Dead Man (a sort of psychedelic western) but one I believe you would enjoy is Nick of Time (a tense action thriller).
A very different gothic romance that has a lot of snowy winter feels is Crimson Peaks. I’d love to see a reaction to that movie.

general rule of thumb for ME is if Johnny Depp is in cake makeup and a fright-wig, avoid that movie. It's awful (this one, Dark Shadows, Alice In Wonderland, Willy Wonka, Sweeney Todd...those types of films). When he's playing, like, a person - he's usually really good (Gilbert Grape, Donnie Brasco, Ninth Gate, Chocolate - things like that).

This is probably my favorite Tim Burton movie, it's kind of perfect for what it is, a Tim Burton movie and a fairy tale. I just mean the Danny Elfman score, the characters, the visual design, the humor, it's everything I love about his movies. A lot of the others like Batman and Beetlejuice are admittedly nostalgic for me so I'm a little biased, but this one I think stands without any nostalgia needed.
Speaking of Johnny Depp movies there's one that I think is kind of underrated, it's horror/thriller but not really scary, Roman Polanski directed, The Ninth Gate. It's creepy but there aren't any jump scares or gore, but lots of atmosphere, for lack of a better word. And I think it's an interesting story, Johnny Depp as a "book detective" of rare books is definitely different.

NO. No no no no no, if it's Christmas in the movie and either centers on it or ends with it, it's a Christmas movie. It doesn't matter if it's all warm and cozy feelings, Christmas is MORE than that. The melancholy and nostalgic ending of this if PERFECTLY in line with how most people feel on Christmas. It's a beautiful thing.

It's funny I'm realizing now that as a kid I unintentionally became a HUGE Tim Burton fan. Loved Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, and Edward without at all understanding they were made by the same guy. Then this one came out and it hit different. I was a very shy kid when I saw it in 1992 and could very much relate to a see myself in Edward, in fact I still can. Then years later in highschool I knew a girl named Kim I bonded with and I rewatched this for the first time in years and could relate even more, and now turning age 40 in 2 days realizing another parallel, that I never saw her again, at least so far.
Peg is almost the PERFECT mom in this movie. I love how selflessly she wants to help Edward and how understanding she is.

Sometimes you just have to be filled with the Christmas spirit which I think Cassie is, even though her whole family is sick. Even though I am not a big Johnny Depp fan right now, Blow, Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas and Ed Wood which was also directed by Tim Burton are his best, From Hell which is loosely based on the Jack The Ripper. Was historically inaccurate. However because of recent history involving Depp. I won't be rushing to see his films anytime soon.

Well I’m glad it won the poll and you have already seen at least 6 Johnny Depp films. Merry Christmas! I'm sorry to hear about the illnesses, and I hope they all get well soon. In my family, everyone (except me so far) got COVID this month, but thankfully they all recovered in time for the Holidays.
At least as a surprise we got a White Christmas Eve this year. Contrary to the forecast of mostly rain, we received 10-30 cm of snow on the 23rd. However, it did not last long as the temperature rose to 15+°C today. I do miss the actual winters we used to have when I was younger, but they have become a rarity in the past 10-15 years.
I do not consider this to be a Christmas movie either. It is just a movie that happens to be set around Christmas. But because of that it makes sense to watch it in December. I think most of the movies on the poll were similar. They are not really about Christmas, but they only have some Christmas elements in them.
Cassie, a Burton movie I think you may enjoy even more would be BIG FISH (2003). Due to its subject matter, it may be a good fit for Father's Day.

Cassie and Carly, you've fallen in love with many movies with sports themes, the following would be great to see your reaction: 1. Knute Rockne - All American 1940 Kute was a great Notre Dame coach and a young Ronald Reagan is in that movie, perhaps you've heard him refer to himself as the Gipper...that's the part he played in the movie...I won't provide any spoilers for either of the two lead actors. 2. Pride of the Yankees - 1942 Life story of Lou Gehrig, the love interest is the same lady from the Best Years of our Lives. Gary Cooper was a huge star in the 30s, 40s, 50s...he was the star of High Noon, among many other classics. 3. Jim Thorpe - All American 1951, Bert Lancaster was the star, and he was very big in the 50s and 60s. He was the old doc in Fields of Dreams. 4. Brian Song 1971 - about football players. It's sonny from the Godfather a year before he was in that movie, and decades before he was the dad in Elf. I guarantee it will be impossible for you to hold back the tears. 5. Hoosiers 1986. Staring Gene Hackman...this one is about Basketball in Indiana. The actress that shot Roy Hobbs in The Natural, is a good person in Hoosiers. 6. Rudy 1993 football once more and very inspirational. All six spread out through 2024 would be great films to watch with your sister. I hope the Popcorn In Bed community agrees. I hope you and your family continue to have a very Merry Christmas and very a happy healthy 2024.

I'd like to recommend Ed Wood (1994) which is the peak of both Burton and Depp. Also, given your appreciation of the great Dianne Wiest, you should check out the two films she won Oscars for, Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) and Bullets Over Broadway (1994), two of Woody Allen's best films.

This is definitely a modern take of the Frankenstein story and I love it so much. It's probably Tim Burton's brightest film, the music is probably one of my favorite scores of any film, especially the Ice Dance, I love how they kept building to it, you would hear it for a little bit but it would always get interrupted and finally we hear the whole thing and even get a finale version. I love all the pastel colors because it's a great contrast when Edward shows up and he really does bring life into the town, before everyone had the same kind of house, car and lifestyle. Edward is such a great character, he doesn't say much but he also says so much with his eyes, they are always big and moving. He is just so sweet and innocent. The ending use to always make me sad too but I just don't know how they could have ended it any different. The town was always going to turn on him, look how fast they did and it didn't help with Joyce lying about what happened. But also Kim staying away from him to protect him actually showed too how much she cared about him. And yes Peg was so sweet and really did become his mother and I like to think he always thinks of her as his mother. I have always been a little sad that they never got a proper good-bye but at least the last words he heard from her was for him to come home. So even after telling Kim it was best for him to go back to his castle she still wanted him to stay. And I love that Joyce is the last one to leave in the end, you can tell she feels guilty and hopefully she did for the rest of her life. I have always adored the romance between Edward and Kim, I liked that they didn't fall in love right away well on her part, they actually didn't start off on the right foot and took some time but once they did they are so sweet together, I love when she finally embraces him, it's honestly probably his first hug and it's just a great moment and the way he closes his eyes when she says I love you was perfect and that's all he really needed.
A Johnny Depp movie that I highly recommend where you would absolutely fall in love with him in is Benny & Joon, it is so good and it's a very underrated performance by him.

Merry Christmas, Cassie. Sad to hear that your family is ill. Wishing you all a swift recovery.
I really like this movie, although it is a stretch to call it a Christmas movie. Johnny Depp gives a very good performance, and it's one of Tim Burton's best films. This would also be, Horror Movie Icon, Vincent Price's last film. Very glad you enjoyed it. Best wishes.

Merry Christmas everyone!
My favorite Tim Burton movie is Sweeny Todd - but his best production by far is the series Wednesday. Love that show.

I am not sure I would consider this a Christmas movie either. I don't recall it being set at Christmas. I think people remember the Ice Dance and mistook it snowing in the movie and mistook it for Christmas.
Edit: pity Carly could not join. I think she might have liked it hopefully I will get to watch along when I get back home. Currently sitting in a hospital myself on Christmas Day and been here for about 5 hours for a possible detached retina.

Merry Christmas One and All! 🎁🎁🎁🌲☃❄❤ So sorry to hear about the health state of your household, Cassie, but this too shall pass. Scissorhands not one of my favourite movies, but pumped for any Vincent Price recs we might get! THE FLY, anyone? Edgar Allan Poe ringing any bells?
