This film was considered one of the worst in the franchise but historic as the first for Trekkies, those TV series fans from all over the world and likely the birth of fan reaction phenomena leading up to the first Comic-Con in San Diego known for fans dressing up as their favorite characters. Too much focus on plot vs. characters but I liked it.

This is a very very thick accented Scottish with uniquely Scottish words thrown in. If you do a search, you can find a variation that has the captions and it makes a lot more sense!

The difference is you have to listen to the songs on the album to know that you don't like them so that you can skip them on subsequent plays. Cassie won't know whether she likes these or not until she sees them.
I predict she's going to want to watch all 6 after she gets through the first 4 because she loves the characters.

I agree with you, Andrew. This is a rich, intelligent and spectacular movie. Yes, it's slow but it's not dull. Like 2001 and SOLARIS, it's hypnotic, mesmerizing, deep, thoughtful and positively gorgeous to look at (which was a bold thing to attempt only a couple years after the fast-paced whiz bang pleasures of STAR WARS).. It's actually my favorite Trek movie. Is WRATH OF KHAN better? Well, it's different. It's more interested in action and excitement than majesty and ideas, but that's fine. I love that one too and Cassie will almost certainly enjoy it more. I'm just pleased that she liked this one as I think it's a woefully under-appreciated Trek film.

Two nobodies were the stars? They are IN the movie but they aren’t the stars. And so what? They are new characters. Every movie has new characters. A lot of episodes had new characters. Very odd criticism. Saying this is like Doomsday Machine and Changeling would be like saying Wrath of Khan is just Space Seed meets Balance of Terror. Sure there are common elements but there are just as many differences. Again, out of all the Trek movies, TMP is the one that is most like Star Trek the TV show. I guess it all depends on what you watch Trek for. I love the characters. The characters and the world they exist in.

Dont get me wrong im a star trek fan. But not this movie. By silly i didnt mean it was stupid. But its pretty much just made up science. Not uncommon for a fictional film/tv series obviously. But the more invested you are in something like Star Trek the more you just tend to accept what you see on the screen as making sense even in a fcitional context. Someone like Cassie watching this film for the first time was obviously confused by certain details that watching 3 episodes of the TV show didn't really give her the understanding of the sort of Star Trek language for lack of a better term. I obviously dont mean it was over her head, i mean its star trek. I mean in a why is that like that or why didn't they just do that sort of way. I also don't think this was slow and outdated because im looking at it from a modern perspective. I saw this movie when i was a kid and it debuted on TV. Even at the time having seen other Sci-Fi films and TV shows i thought it didn't work very well. Its not insultingly bad, its not punch yourself in the face boring. Its just a poor effort.

She said in the live video on YouTube that she'll probably watch 3/4 more. And why endure godawful movies if you don't have to? Especially when there's a plethora of good / great movies out there she's yet to watch. Tell me you never skipped songs on an album that you don't like.

Very happy to see Cassie enjoy TMP as it was meant to be enjoyed, as a story about exploration, mystery, philosophy, and intelligence — and as a cinematic spectacle with images and effects meant to inspire awe and wonder.
It’s, of course, not flawless, but it’s heartening to see TMP make new fans.

Just to say (and this isn't pointed at anyone): Paramount, I think CBS owned Paramount back then never committed to Star Trek movies, even after their critical and box offices success, Paramount kept them on a short leash. I think I remember Leonard Nimoy or maybe it was Shatner saying this. But back in the 1980s was anyone guaranteed a sequel?

That's Stephen Collins? No way!! Holy crackers. Is there anything redeeming that Catherine Hicks/Whatshername - his TV wife on 7th Heaven- was the whale scientist in 4? No? I tried. A year ago I was home for the hospital from major major surgery, and I'm going to say because of pain meds the first night back, I streamed a little of 7th Heaven cause I couldn't sleep. That was a tough watch. I found something else after three episodes.

I waited ten long years for them to make the movie, and two nobody's were the stars. The plot was a messy hybrid of "The Changeling" and "Doomsday Machine" and showed zero imagination or novelty. You'd think after a decade they could have come up with an original plot.
Ronald Carpenter
2023-12-14 00:21:44 +0000 UTC
For those drool over sci-fi models sure, but I had to wait ten long years for the studios to make the movie, and when they finally did the whole story revolved around two nobody nothing strangers no one ever heard of in the Star Trek realm. And the story basis, a blurry hybrid of "The Changling" and Doomsday Machine"

It reminds me of that line in Edgar Wright's TV series Spaced when Simon Pegg's character says: "It's a fact of life sure as eggs is eggs and every odd numbered Star Trek film is shit." He later appeared in Star Trek (2009) which was the eleventh film. He later said, quoted on IMDB "Fate put me in that film to show I was talking out of my ass.".

Disagree Don. Star Trek has always been a thinking person's series, both in the Television shows and Movies. This one works except the edit is a bit slow. Blame that on the society at the time. We demand, due to the internet, instant gratification. That's why the edit was "slow". If the same movie were made today, it could be done in an hour and thirty minutes. I will admit however, that Wrath of Khan is much better. Star Trek 4, the Voyage home, in my opinion, is the best of the 6 movies with original crew.
Andrew Gilliam
2023-12-13 20:43:36 +0000 UTC
I really enjoyed Cassie’s reaction but even the directors version of this film is so dull. It was slow and outdated even when it was new. It’s fun to see Cassie’s confusion at a lot of this stuff as it shows how silly Star Trek is when you aren’t more immersed in it. But now that’s out the way we can get to Wrath of Khan which is a whole new ball game.

I can see why people skip 3 when it is watched alone. But given that Cassie is brand new to the Trek universe, it would be a shame for her to miss out on that one. It's a bridge between 2 and 4 and there are some funny and solid moments in it. It explores the Vulcan mythos, sheds light on Spock, and has some classic Kirk moments along with some solid character building for him. Plus that specific scenario plays into his reactions in 6. She should definitely not skip 3 upon her first watch of the movies.
I would never suggest 5, but I won't begrudge her if she does watch it, and will watch her reaction regardless.
6 is probably my favorite of the 6 movies. The story is tight, some of the best character interactions in the movie and a wonderful send off for a great crew.

2023-12-13 15:28:17 +0000 UTC
You misunderstand. The dynamics and plot are like an episode. But make no mistake. This IS a movie. And a very splendid one. I think there is absolutely nothing wrong with having a plot more like an episode. There’s a real mystery here with an awe & grandeur to this movie missing in the other Trek films. What is V’Ger? Why is it doing this? Where does it come from? Spock’s mind meld, Jerry Goldsmith score, the visuals, and yes even the deliberate pacing. Look I love Wrath of Khan. Wonderful movie. Terrific action/adventure film. But which movie is more like Star Trek? It’s TMP. For better or worse.
In an era of Star Wars it’s easy to see why this movie disappointed some at the time. This has more in common with 2001 a Space Odyssey than Star Wars. They even have similar plots if you really think about it. I’m glad it’s reputation has slowly grown over time. Some find it boring, and I get that. I understand that. I disagree but I get it.
This movie is great ship porn. The beautiful shots of the enterprise are just mouth wateringly amazingly. The entire space dock sequence with Goldsmiths score? My god. The model work is 2nd to none.

I will never understand the hate this movie gets. This is Star Trek. It’s the same beloved characters on a discovery and adventure. Yes there’s no much action but there doesn’t need to be. The movie is a marvel to behold. The model work is…just beautiful. Jerry Goldsmith’s score is terrific. The plot is interesting/mysterious. Anyone who says they are a Trek fan and doesn’t like this movie, I just don’t get it. It’s like an extra long episode of the series. If this were an episode of the series it would be ranked as one of the best.
To give people an idea of the budget difference. Star Wars, was made in 1976/77 for about 11-12million dollars. Star Trek TMP was made for 40-45 million. This was the most expensive movie ever made at the time.

I'm not mad that you're watching this film; I've always thought that it was unfairly criticized, even if it's far from the best in the series, and I like the fact that it's real sci-fi with a connection to the NASA space program, which has always been a subtext of Star Trek. BUT - I am concerned about Star Treks 3 and 5. 3 is so cringey and campy - but it's a masterpiece compared to 5, which is a contender for worst film ever made. The only reason I'm concerned about your watching these movies is that I'm afraid they may make you give up on Star Trek and not stick around for the good ones: I know everyone loves 2, and I do too, but I think 6 is at least as good, and I really want you to see it, which you might not if you force yourself to sit through 3 and especially 5. (4 is fun - it's kind of like the Tribble episode, kind of goofy - but 6 is like an excellent episode of TOS at its best. 5 is so pretentious and almost in the so-bad-it's-good category but it isn't really.)

This Star Trek movie is probably the second worst one that there is. They were responding to the Star Wars success, and while the concept was okay, I'm not sure the execution was that great. It does help explain the time lapse between the show and the movies, though. Typically the best Star Trek movies are the even numbered ones, with 3 being required watching. So I personally would have said to watch 2-4 and then 6.

That was a great reaction. I like films that don't answer everything, but give the audience an emotional mystery about cosmic stuff and still deliver compelling characters including V'ger and you are so right...some of the shots especially Kirk flying around the Enterprise for the first time in years are way too long. Oh, well, a good story and based on the the original series episode The Changeling but big time expanded.

A little faster paced, with some action, good stories, fun character interactions. Nice story arc over movies 2-4. 45:05 Douglas Trumbull was and is celebrated in special visual effects. He also worked on Stanley Kubrick's landmark sci-fi classic 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) which is arguably one of the most influential films in science fiction. To quote Steven Spielberg (from Channel 4's 100 Greatest Films): "Without 2001, there never would have been a Star Wars, and there never would have been a Close Encounters" I really hope Cassie watches 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) one day
