Sneakers (1992) - Full Reaction

I think I have a thing for heist movies...  this was so much fun! It's like a precursor to 'Ocean's' with a more everyday-vibe, but still cool and Robert Redford really brought it! I know nothing about computers and tech but it definitely seemed like the hacking and information control angle was ahead of it's time? Anyway, hope you guys enjoy the reaction, sorry it was late! Update post coming later this evening.

Update: Re-uploaded the download version, it should be working now!

Sneakers (1992) - Full Reaction

The one with the actor in it, not the movie star...1999 remake is better by a factor of 10.

He says to Miss Cochrane, "Baby, up your butt with a coconut."

NED RYERSON!?

Saturday Night Beaver

A great idea and it works really well until the final act, where it almost completely falls apart with its over the top ridiculousness. What a shame. I was hoping this was going to at least close to the great Three Days of the Condor. Nope. And, of course, they had to take a shot the GOP. It is Hollywood, after all, filled with insane liberals.

thansen

Definitely recommend The Thomas Crown Affair (both of them), and in case it hasn't been mentioned already: you'd probably enjoy the tv show Leverage.

Alexis

Hey, I was working in the building where they filmed some of the last part of this movie! I remember coming out of my department and Robert Redford was standing there with a bunch of cameras and people around him getting set up for a shot. I heard some people say they saw Sidney Poitier also, but I never saw him...just Redford. And, no, I didn't ask for an autograph. Growing up in Southern California, you see lots of stars and filming locations.

NinjaMidget

This is one of my favorites from childhood

Ian from wine country

While I love the classics like Christmas Vacation and A Miracle On 34th Street (90s version), my all-time favourite Christmas movie is currently Noelle (2019) starring Anna Kendrick. Never fails to make me smile, or cry my eyes out. I absolutely adore this movie and highly recommend it. Guaranteed to give you the Christmas Spirit. I really hope you watch it for the channel. It's only on Disney+. 🙏

Luke Godfrey

Great Reaction as always Cassie. You always make my day when I can watch movie with you. Thanks for the wonderful reaction.

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

Which Thomas Crown Affair? Pierce Brosnan or Steve McQueen?

3dbadboy1

Awesome, Thanks Cassie.

Bret

"I wanted to see more practice" - made me think of Entrapment (1999) 😀 Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Also a heist and computers movie.

Planner

Comedy-heist film, QUICK CHANGE.

Steve Colletti

Should be fixed!

Cassie

Should be fixed!

Cassie

I watched this so many times on VHS, it is truly underrated, and the soundtrack, is perfecto!

Keith Jones

Can anyone else download this? Says its in the owners trash for me.

Bret

This was a first time watch for me. I don't recall ever hearing about this movie before, but it was a pleasant surprise. I think it was very ahead of its time and portrayed computers and hacking more realistically than most Hollywood movies do. Of course, they took some liberties, but the core idea is solid, and a risk is there even today in the form of quantum computing, that would shatter all digital security we know today. Also, what an amazing cast. I can join to the people recommending some Sidney Poitier movies. IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT (1967) would probably be my top recommendation.

Gábor Árki

I first wrote "pre-echoes", and then tried to think of a better phrase and nothing seemed to get the feeling of what I meant (i.e. that they seem familiar when I listen to them now after knowing the Apollo 13 soundtrack), so then just deleted the "pre-". "reminiscent" is a better word - thanks

Andrew Vignaux

If you liked Sneakers for "being ahead of its time" or just technology, computer hacking, and/or government surveillance as themes, you might want to consider the following fictional movies: "War Games" (1983) - https://youtube.com/watch?v=TQUsLAAZuhU "Enemy of the State" (1998) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120660/ "Hackers" (1995) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piI9vJ9-UZ0 "Firewall" (2006) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0408345/ "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" (2011) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1568346/ Also, if you're curious about how some of these themes have actually played out in the real world, you might want to check these historical dramatizations out: "Pirates of Silicon Valley" - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0168122/ "The Social Network" (2010) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1285016/ "The Immitation Game" (2014) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2084970/ "Snowden" (2016) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3774114/

Alex

I did notice some familiar notes in the music but couldn't place it. But it is indeed reminiscent to Apollo 13. Or the other way around, given this was first. 😀

Gábor Árki

If you liked this one I would definitely recommend WarGames, which is written by some of the same people.

Patrick Egan

My favorite Christmas movies are: 1. It's a Wonderful Life (1946), 2. It Happened on 5th Avenue (1947). 3. Holiday Affair (1949). 4. The Shop Around the Corner (1940). 5. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989). 6. A Christmas Story (1983). 7. The Bishop's Wife (1947). A Christmas Carol (1951). Well, you asked, what can I say? I'm 61, and I like old movies.

Eddie Perkins

To help you connect the dots with other films you reacted to, Mary McDonnell (who plays Liz) also played Stands With A Fist opposite Kevin Costner in "Dances With Wolves". If you ever get around to watching the Battlestar Galactica reboot series, she is fantastic as one of the major characters in an ensemble cast.

Paul Ark

Getting the same problem here.

Patrick Egan

I've always loved this movie. Seen it so many times! Two other movies of a similar vein are "Spy Games" with Robert Redford and Brad Pitt. The other is an oldy but a goody based on an outstanding book, "3 Days of the Condor" with Robert Redford. These are more espionage than heist but they have the same groove.

Matt Wathen

Everyone is mentioning many other films that David Strathairn ('Whistler') was in but are forgetting a PiB favorite "The Firm" where he plays the incarcerated brother of Cruise's character.

Brian

I had the same issue

TigerDelta

Hey @Cassie Audio and embedded Video are faulty in the Download version. Audio is just your intro music as a loop for two hours and embedded Video of the movie is a constant error message.

RX2904

I hope it's the "garbage movie"!

Walter

Trivia note the black and tan letter jacket Robert Redford wears is the same jacket he wore in The Natural

R Harper

I try and squeeze in as many Christmas movies as I can into December. I don't have favorites just a whole lot of traditional viewings, including the ones that you listed. Home Alone Home Alone 2: Lost In New York. Die Hard Die Hard 2 The Long Kiss Goodnight Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Gremlins Trading Spaces I mean Places 😏 Bad Santa Miracle On 34th Street Preacher's Wife (still need to watch The Bishops Wife) Eight Crazy Nights The Ref A Christmas Carol with Alastair Sim Muppet Christmas Carol Mixed Nuts I also watch The Terminal and With Honors around the Christmas season. I find them very fitting this time of year.

Zane From Canada

Cassie, you should get out some of Jason Statham's early movies, in particular "The Italian Job". And although they aren't heist movies, "The Transporter" movies check some similar boxes, while also having some wonderful action scenes. In my mind they are the kind of movies popcorn was made for. That has to count for something, amirite? Might want to get out the original "The Italian Job" first, or there might be some heister histrionics (see what I did there?) around here since it's a classic. I just like the new one better.

David Collins

I watched this movie a bunch on VHS as a kid, loved how clever it was. When you mentioned David Strathairn (whistler) as the news guy, I thought his role of Edward R. Morrow in "Goodnight and Good Luck" was going to be quite the pull, but it was Jonathon Pryce from "Tomorrow Never Dies". A lot of other good heist movies are getting mentioned above, but one out of left field that is fun, ridiculous and has Bruce Willis... "Hudson Hawk", it should get thrown into the mix the next time heists come around. There was also some chatter about escape movies, and two Sydney Poitier movies came to mind as I knew Sneakers was coming up, they were "The Defiant Ones" and "Shoot to Kill" which is was released as "Deadly Pursuit" where I am from.

Mojo One Thousand

Great movie

Johnny Salinas

Love this movie. Strong childhood memory of watching it on a motel tv, sitting on a bed with my dad and sister. Two other Robert Redford heist films to check out are Spy Game (more of an espionage/prison break film but it does have a well executed plan and Brad Pitt) and The Old Man and the Gun (elderly bank robber romance movie but very well done).

Jacob King

I do think this is underrated - I really like it. But one of the things that brightens my day when I rewatch this is James Horner's soundtrack. The main "Sneakers" theme with Branford Marsalis is truly wonderful. And I hear echoes of the Apollo 13 stings - and that makes me very happy too. The young piano prodigy, that "Liz" is teaching when we're introduced to her, is credited as the musician playing that Chopin waltz. The music on this film is great.

Andrew Vignaux

I don’t think I have ever heard or seen anyone crack their feet before. That was pretty loud and impressive. 😂

Brian McGovern

We can keep it as an inside joke so we can identify who is a Kernel when we are out and about. We should get tshirts made saying I ♥️ Trading Spaces.

Brian McGovern

I guess us Kernels will have to forever refer to the Dan Akroyd, Eddie Murphy, Jamie Lee Curtis 1983 Trading Places as Trading Spaces. 😀

Brian McGovern

It's criminal how Conspiracy Theory doesn't get more love.

Mike Lemon

She has. The "already watched" list- https://letterboxd.com/pib1/films/

Mike Lemon

The original is also more suggestive in its sexuality rather than being explicit like the remake is. I don't care either way, but Carly is more uncomfortable with that kind of content.

Stick Figure Studios

If they don't, they won't get the significance of his psychiatrist.

Bert Towle

Yes you should watch The Thomas Crown Affair, both the original and remake. Another one I think you’d enjoy is Entrapment with Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta Jones.

James UK

Entrapment which stars Sean Connery and Katherine Zeta Jones is another heist movie for you to enjoy.

Jimmy Reyes

Fun reaction Cassie! The movie takes place in my neck of the woods. So I recognize a lot of the locations mentioned. Although many of the filming locations were in L.A. I believe. Liz was played by Mary McDonnell. She also played “Stands with a fist” in Dances with Wolves. And yes, you definitely need to watch the Thomas Crown Affair!

Robert da Spruce

I would agree that How to Steal a Million is a brilliant heist movie , the chemistry between Audrey Hepburn and Peter O'Toole is electric and Hugh Griffith is a scream Well worth a look Favourite Christmas film Scrooge (1951) with the incomparable Alistair Sim in the title role. Absolutely brilliant 😊😊😊

William Burnham

“How to Steal a Million“ is a gem of a heist film - it’s chic and romantic and clever - right up your alley. And yes - more Sidney Poitier films please.

Rose

And as a kid in Stand By Me

Cole Jennett

We watched all 3 of those Poitier movies in High School English class.

Cole Jennett

Yes Cassie… “Heists are fun” You should react to the TV show Leverage where every episode the team pulls off a heist. Please at least react to the 2009 pilot episode “The Nigerian Job”

Tara

I remember I saw this in the theater when it came out, I don't even think I knew what it was going to be about when I bought the ticket but back then the matinee was 3 bucks and they built a theater just up the street from my house when I was in middle school, so my friends and I would just kill a Saturday watching whatever movies were playing, and playing video games in the lobby. But I remember being really pleasantly surprised by this one, perfect blend of funny with some high stakes espionage thriller action, great cast, and weirdly prophetic looking back now lol. Ben Kingsley was a great villain, not necessarily evil, maybe damaged and seemingly delusional, but he wasn't entirely wrong either, which makes him almost admirable, that makes for an iconic villain because he thinks he's the good guy and you can kind of understand why. And River Phoenix, wow, to me he stole every scene he was in, in every movie he was in, this one too. Sadly this was one of his last movies and he was branching out in both mainstream and indie movies like My Own Private Idaho (with a young Keanu Reeves btw). I always wonder what it would be like if both River and Joaquin were acting now, both so talented I can't even imagine really.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Yes, you should watch Thomas Crown Affair. It has a very, very clever heist. And maybe even a romance. Some really great reactions lately, Cassie. Thank you. Oh, and watch the remake, not the original. Sidney Poitier in The Heat of the Night would be a great reaction.

Bill Hayden

After 'The Sting' and 'The Natural' and now "Sneakers' Cassie keeps admiring Robert Redford, but considering her well known familiarity with romance movies... she never mentions Robert Redford in his role opposite Barbara Streisand in perhaps the single greatest romance movie of all-time - 'The Way We Were'. It can't be possible Cassie hasn't seen 'The Way We Were'... Is It?????? Naw!!!!!!!! (personally, I think the McGraw/O'Neil classic 'Love Story' is more... classic, but I've heard cinema historian types always claim Streisand/Redford.)

Terry Yelmene

Good movie. It has been so long since I have seen this movie that I forgot most of it. I figured you would like it. You can't go wrong with Robert Redford. And yes. You should watch the Thomas Crown Affair. I would say watch the 1999 version. It has Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo. Some people will fuss and say you have to watch the 1968 version which is good also. But, the 1999 version is better. You would like the love story better in the 99 version. You really need to watch it. You will love it. I promise. But, you also need to watch more Redford.

Rick Williams

If you love that Dan Akroyd is a conspiracy theorist in this film, check out Mel Gibson in Conspiracy Theory.

Brent Petty

‘Whistler’ played by David Straitharn (sp?) was also ‘Pierce Patchett’ in ‘LA Confidential.’ He was the wealthy proprietor of the group of girls cut to look like movie stars, Fleur-de-lis, ‘Whatever you desire.’

Lamar Smith

Good suggestion Tara... I really like Timothy Hutton's character and that strange blonde girl on the team.

Terry Yelmene

Yes! Yes! Yes! Thomas Crown Affair! Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo. You will LOVE it! And Carly *must* watch with you. It is truly a fun and exciting heist movie!!! I can't begin to thank you for how much fun I have watching old memories for the first time with you (and your sister), it absolutely makes my contribution to your channel worth more than the original movie tickets cost. Love ya Cassie! Thank you.

Mike H

Watched this movie over and over when I was a kid...kind of wanted to be Whistler.

Steve Mercier

It’s been far more often then that😂

Cole Jennett

A wicked little smile then "A man with a specific set of skills." "Opps, I forgot he's blind and he's gonna drive!" "I love a smart plan - when it all comes together!" "Loved Robert Redford!" "Heists are FUN!" And I had fun rewatching one of my favorite casts ever assembled for an all-time favorite movie in this great PiB reaction!

Terry Yelmene

That's the third time now, in different videos, that she called 'Trading Places' Trading Spaces, stop that.

JPDotCom23

Which Thomas Crown Affair? The Steve McQueen movie or the garbage movie?

Thomas Thompson

and The Thomas Crown Affair is a fantastic film. I'm referring to the 1999 remake starring Mr. James Bond, Pierce Brosnan, and also the wonderful Rene Russo. Great heist film.

Walter

Whistler (the Bling Guy) is David Strathairn, who you watched in LA Confidential as Pierce Morehouse Patchett (Fleur-de-Lis - whatever you desire). He was also the guy who ran the league in A League Of Their Own.

Walter

Fabulous reaction, Cassie! You are hitting them out of the park this week! Where you have seen some of these actors before: You knew Redford and Ackroyd. David Strathairn was not the news guy, the villain in Bond movie TOMORROW NEVER DIES. That was Jonathan Pryce. David Strathairn was Pierce Pratchett in LA CONFIDENTIAL the high class guy who gave hookers plastic surgery to make them look like movie stars. River Phoenix, Carl in this movie was Young Indiana Jones in INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE. Mary McDonnell was Liz who played the First Lady in INDEPENDENCE DAY. And I echo Mark Vaderr and also want more Sidney Poitier movies on the channel now that you have seen him. My dream is a 1967 Sidney Poitier Week. No actor ever had a better year than Sidney Poitier in 1967. The three movies that he starred in that year TO SIR, WITH LOVE, GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER? and IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT (Best Picture Oscar winner) were all very successful, socially important and impactful, and highly entertaining.

Mike LL

if you like heist movies you'll love Flawless [2007]

pat on

After this, "Three Days of the Condor" will hit a lot harder!

Ben Livingstone

Great reaction, for a long time this was on my list of 5 movies, if I ever won Trivia night 😉 so, I'm a happy camper 🥰 River Phoenix (rip 😭) was a great actor we lost too soon. The mustached redhead bad guy was the news reporter in West Wing that liked C.J. Craig! (He was also in Revenge of the Nerds 1984) and I know you've seen the actress who played Liz (Mary McDonnell) in Dances with Wolves, she was "Stands with Fist" and the guy who played whistler, the blind guy, (David Straithairn) was in L.A. Confidential and Home for the Holidays? And MANY TV show episodes, including House... Fantastic Cast in Sneakers, but none of them were in that Bond movie, sorry.

Jon Johns

Great reaction! Bless you River Phoenix, you left us too soon. Cassie, you've seen him as young Indiana Jones in Last Crusade, at the beginning.

Brian's Dog

You have finally done a movie on my top 10 list of movies. Thank you soooooo much! This was great fun. Okay, the cast: Robert Redford you know. Sidney Poitier from Guess Who's coming to dinner and In The Heat of the Night. Dan Aykroyd you know. Ben Kingsley was in An American President and a bunch of other stuff. Mary McDonnell was in Dances with Wolves. River Phoenix was in Stand By Me. David Straithairn has been in a bunch of stuff, but he was in the third Bourne movie. An absolute blockbuster cast. Oh, and the red haired goon of Cosmo's - Dick Gordon? That is Timothy Busfield, who you will know very well from The West Wing - he was Danny Concannon and he was also in Field of Dreams! Amazing movie, great story, and yeah, ahead of it's time - I don't think people were quite ready for this one when it came out. Thanks for letting us watch this with you!

Damon Corrigan

Loved this movie when I first saw it and it's still great. What a cast. As others have mentioned, this one is pretty realistic when it comes to the hacking with going through the garbage and a lot of social engineering. As you said Cassie it was ahead of its time dealing with how information is everything. I always thought it was funny how Dan Aykroyd kind of played the conspiracy theory guy in this, and in real life he's been known to be interested in outside thinking when it comes to things like UFOs and such. I wonder if they kind of put that in based on that. It's always nice when you pick a movie that gives me a chance to watch something that I I loved but haven't watched in years.

Canadianant

The Score would be great. Or Heist

DAVID COSTELLO

Sneakers is a fantastic film and I love its score. Check out Three Days of the Condor from 1975 with Robert Redford for a good spy / tangentially heist-esque movie.

REDR58

They should definitely watch the original Thomas Crown Affair from 1968 with Steve McQueen first!

REDR58

Hey Cassie, I know how much you love it when a plan comes together like the Oceans movies, The Sting and Sneakers and I heard something possibly about a TV show for the channel. You should at least check out the TV show Leverage from 2008 (not the reboot Leverage: Redemption) Each member of the cast has their own specialty and a plan comes together every episode. Would you at least react to the pilot and then decide. It could be a Patreon exclusive, so littte to no editing. Just a thought.

Tara

When you do The Thomas Crown Affair bring Carly along. It’s not just a heist film, it’s also a globe trotting sweeping romance with Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo. It’s super fun.

djKENTO

"The Bishop's Wife" (1947) is a Xmas movie that seems to be woefully overlooked by reactors. A fine holiday offering starring Cary Grant.

Gary W

absolutely falls in my "favorite movies" spectrum

Mike H

Guess Who's Coming To Dinner. I love that's the line Checkov says in undiscovered country when they invite Gorkon around for tea

rakesh

Christmas Vacation is my favorite christmas movie

Yaisu

Glad you could watch this. Great underrated movie

Bill Maurer

Totally forgot James Earl Jones was in this and Ben Kinglsey! It really was a star studded cast. RIP River Pheonix. He really was the teen idol of his day. Did a few small movies, one actually with Sidney Poitier, who was in this film called Little Nikita. Also, one with Keanu in My Private Idaho. David Strathairn wasn't the guy you were thinking of in Bond Or MIssion Impossible. He was however in Memphis Belle, a War time film that i'm sure is on your watch list. As for the heist movies 𝗕𝗮𝗯𝘆 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿, 𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗦𝗲𝗲 𝗠𝗲 and 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 are all great ones i don't think you've seen on the channel. C𝗵𝗲𝗶𝘀𝘁mas Decemeber Perhaps?

rakesh

To definitely be that guy, technically "Ocean's 11" is the precursor to "Ocean's Eleven"

Variable38

For another superb, underrated heist movie, check out The Score with Robert De Niro and Edward Norton. Another great, and very different, heist movie is Sexy Beast. Sexy Beast also co-stars Ben Kingsley (Cosmo in Sneakers). Both are must-watch movies IMO.

Just Plain Bob

Not to be that guy but the precursor to OCEAN’S 11 is… OCEAN’S 11. 🤷‍♂️

Jason Chirevas

Ever since Heat won a "heist" pole and she didn't love it as much as everyone else did and thought she would I was saying that she should be using the word "caper" and this is more the kind of movie she was thinking of.

Variable38

Such a great cast for this movie. How stacked is it? Redford, Kingsley, Poitier and James Earl Jones have won Oscars. Strathairn, Aykroyd, Phoenix, and Mary McDonnell have all been nominated. That is STACKED.

Rick Moreno

I'm so glad this dropped today on the channel. Today is my birthday and it's another gift to an already fantastic day. Thank you. ❤️ BTW Congratulations, Cassie. 350K subscribers on YT. 👏

Zane From Canada

Just a hunch, but I don’t think she will care for all the swearing and yelling in it.

Cole Jennett

She talked about the movie with the Mini Cooper’s in it when she was mentioning heist movies she’s seen, so I’m taking that as a yes😊

Cole Jennett

Can't wait to watch Sneakers later tonight! As for Christmas suggestions, I really hope you watch The Ref (1994) this December. It's another hidden gem. Very funny, and it has my favourite "Christmas Eve" vibe in any movie ever. And for a less obvious suggestion, I think you'd love The Snowman (1982), and its sequel, The Snowman and the Snowdog (2012). They're classic, beloved, British animations. They're only 24 minutes each, so could be a double watch. Would be perfect for the channel, or to watch with your kids.

Future Boy

When Sneakers came out a lot of the periodicals of the time Byte, PC, PC World, Nova, Omni did articles about how this movie portrayed hacking as it really is. A lot of hacking is social engineering. You go through trash you dive dumpsters for discarded technical manuals from big businesses. You research your target, their likes and dislikes. Anyway, this is close to the real thing at the time that anybody had done. A lot of lame stuff came around this time. You can spot screenwriters that know nothing about computing they say lame things like "I'm into the mainframe" which means they've located the Apple iOS or Windows operating systems when real information and drivers are kept separate on server farms. Regardless, this is nicely written, put together an edited. Rest in peace, Sidney Poitier River Phoenix.

R Harper

I like your Texas waffle.

Mark Vaderr

I've been waiting for this reaction for a long time. Still seems like yesterday when I saw this in the theater in '92. Love the James Horner score and the cast.

Ian Cano

Excellent, Cassie! You just watched your first movie with Sidney Poitier in it. You need to see more of his movies! Movies that I know you will love. "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner?" "Lillies of the Field" "In the Heat of the Night" "To Sir, With Love" "Shoot To Kill" "The Defiant Ones" Cassie, I would never let you down when it comes to movies. Sidney Poitier is an actor you need to see more of.

Mark Vaderr

You would love LOGAN LUCKY.

nick bell

30 y/o film, no subscription streaming…. 🥴

JC762

Not a huge fan of them here, but when they are good... They are really good.. Meaning, despite not liking a lot of them, the ones I do are in my top 20 easy.

Michael J

Have you seen the Italian Job with Mark Wahlberg ?
