A Fish Called Wanda (1988) - Full Reaction

This was just a solid, funny film! Jamie Lee Curtis was great as Wanda! She's definitely reshaped my image of her beyond Freaky Friday haha... And Otto, oh my gosh, I couldn't STAND his character, but I guess that's just a testament to how good the acting was :) It was all just so silly and absurd, but in the best way. It's always such fun doing these live watch-alongs with you guys. For those of you in the extra butter tier who didn't get the notification that this was happening, we're changing up the way we notify for the next one! Hope you enjoy!

A Fish Called Wanda (1988) - Full Reaction

Comments

I liked your reactions. Hadn't seen this movie either. it was absolutely good

Michael Pullmann

Cassie if you like silly humor the silliest of the silly would be the British cast from Monty Python's Flying Circus. Don't try and make sense of it. Just go along for silly silly ride.

John Liebling

He doesn't have a big part in Robert Downey Jr's Chaplain - but it is a far cry from a Fish Called Wanda.

John Liebling

Kevin Klein is a very good actor. He gave you a character you liked to despise. How about a character you'd fall in love with. Silverado 1985, Dave 1993, De-lovely 2004

John Liebling

All great recommendations! I may be in the minority and like Fierce Creatures more than “Wanda” (though it’s great too).

Ian Forbes

Finally got around to watching this reaction. I knew you'd enjoy it. I recommend you watch Fierce Creatures (1997) too. It's the unofficial sequel to this movie. All the same actors but different characters, and both dark comedies written by John Cleese (Archie). On a separate note, you should definitely watch more Kevin Kline movies. He's in so many but Dave (1993) and In & Out (1997) are my favourite ones of his.

Luke Godfrey

Was it just me or did Cassie look unimpressed and angry during the sex scene? LOL She was def not a fan of Kevin Kline's character!

Mike the Ginger

"He's not even speaking Italian, is he?" "Awe, she playing him like a fiddle, and his mean wife." "Just say it's evidence or something - Oh God, I'm Helping Them!" I don't know where this is headed. but I know I don't want Otto to get anything!" "The necklace has the key in it!" [finally just shaking her head - and then her patented move of pulling her blanket up to her eyes]

Terry Yelmene

Love this 🎥- the American and British archetypes in Klein and Cleese here are painfully funny. And of course “the ca.., car…ca” scene which ends with Ken repeating the name perfectly and looking stunned

Jonathan Fearby

LOVED your reaction, Cassie! I had somehow missed the fact that John Cleese WROTE this one in addition to acting in it. I STRONGLY recommend watching the quasi-but-not-really sequel starring all of the same people called Fierce Creatures. I am very happy that you enjoyed it.

David Bennett

I just watched Fawlty Towers, a very short (just 12 episodes) but hilarious British series, also starring John Cleese. I think she would also enjoy that.

thansen

Since you loved Kevin Kline so much in this movie, you have to watch him in DAVE. A completely different character, but you'll love him even more. This movie checks all the boxes for everything you love about movies.

Kirk & Dawn VanWinkle

Otto is the best

Yann Laliberté

I laughed for a solid minute. I have asthma and seriously worried about my health for a moment. Solid gold.

Just Plain Bob

A movie I haven't seen in a long time and I enjoyed it just as much as Cassie did. Hearing her say "Wanda is going to have to kill Otto" and then the look on her face when the dog dies a moment later, I haven't laughed that had in a while.

Ryan Geiger

A crazy, fun movie. And yes. She had them eating out of her hand. That is a saying. Great Reaction, Cassie.

Rick Williams

Absolutely top drawer.

Thomas Thompson

Four Weddings and a Funeral needs to happen soon too!

Cole Jennett

Fawlty Towers was brilliant!

Steve Colletti

Love both of them. "Your marriage is a farce Purchase !"

John Drake

I tuned in to this Extra Butter event, and I've never seen this movie. I still haven't as I was just watching you react. As fun as the post game chat was with you, I will never forget the look on your face when you were informed that Kevin Kline won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for this movie. Absolutely priceless. This is why we adore you, Cassie. Thank you for all you do. :)

Mark Vaderr

Can't believe you don't recognise John Cleese from Monty Python. You MUST do Monty Python: The Search for the Holy Grail and Life of Brian. You should also check out the legendary Fawlty Towers. Michael Palin (Ken) was also a Python.

pinkdino99

Intro... The one with mini coopers. You mean the Italian job? Probably the us version. You gotta watch the original with Micheal Caine!

rakesh

Cassie you seem to enjoy comedies with a British edge, I suggest in your downtime a TV show called Toast of London. Also if you haven't seen it. Father Ted, which is a bit more older now but utterly hilarious.

rakesh

now you have to watch Fierce Creatures

pat on

P.S. Some Python-adjacent films if you're interested: The Magic Christian (1969) Jabberwocky (1977) Time Bandits (1981) The Missionary (1982) Yellowbeard (1983) A Private Function (1984) Brazil (1985) The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988) Erik the Viking (1989) The Wind in the Willows a.k.a. Mr. Toad''s Wild Ride (1996) Fierce Creatures (1997) Absolutely Anything (2015)

Jake McNulty

Also I remember I first saw this film on TV as a teenager in the early 2000s. That was when I was discovering and getting into "Monty Python", so Cleese and Palin were the huge draws for me. I highly recommend the Python films "Holy Grail", "Life of Brian" and "Meaning of Life", and maybe if you're curious give a couple episodes of "Flying Circus" a go.

Jake McNulty

As a child I listened to Monty Python's The Final Rip Off album a lot. So when my mom told me about A Fish Called Wanda and it had John Cleese and Michael Palin, I was overjoyed. We watched it together and laughed our heads off. 😅 Funny thing, though. My mom loves a lot of Kevin Kline movies, including this one, but doesn't like Kevin Kline. She finds his face and his voice very irritating. 🤣

Zane From Canada

I started to mention Glenn in my post but realized that Cassie never seems to remember where she's seen him and almost certainly wouldn't remember the name. When she reacted to Backdraft, for instance, she recognized him but could not remember from where (the films you mentioned plus The Right Stuff). Great actor and he's fantastic in Silverado. Honestly, the movie deserves a reaction regardless of the cast - it's just a great western.

Just Plain Bob

Kevin Kline is a phenomenal actor. Might I be so bold as to recommend the film "Cry Freedom" (1987) starring Kline and Denzel Washington respectively as South African journalist Donald Woods and the anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko? I think you'll enjoy it.

Jake McNulty

Totally agree! I think Fierce Creatures is better than this one tbh.

Avastrasza

I think DAVE may change that. 😉

Gábor Árki

That’s an accomplishment anyone would want tbf.

Shehab Dawoud

Cassie was really overwhelmed by Otto. 😄But my cheeks say it was a fun reaction overall. I think Kevin Kline's Oscar win was kind of a surprise back then, because they don't usually award comedic performances. He is showing his versatility as an actor in several movies. DAVE (1993) is a political comedy co-starring besides Sigourney Weaver. I think Cassie would really enjoy his character there. A have a suggestion for a future poll: best British comedies (or even movies in general). I find them very amusing and original. They often have this "indie" vibe that makes them stand out. Couple of suggestions: - FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL (1994), a romcom with Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell - THE FULL MONTY (1997), a great comedy and Oscar winner for best music - FIERCE CREATURES (1997), a spiritual follow up of WANDA reuniting the cast, and I think a somewhat underrated comedy - BILLY ELLIOT (2000), a heartwarming story about a working-class boy chasing his dream for ballet - DEATH AT A FUNERAL (2007), a dark comedy directed by Frank Oz (Yoda) and featuring Alan Tudyk in hilarious supporting role - PRIDE (2014), a comedy based on the inspirational true story how UK gay activists go to a conservative countryside supporting a miner's strike in 1984

Gábor Árki

Funny, funny movie and a great reaction. She sure didn't love Kevin Kline, did she? 🤣 Jaime Lee was so a-dora-ble or was she voom-voom? She was both!

Mike LL

I think Cassie would love Silverado not only for getting a more favorable impression of Kevin Kline, and for Danny Glover and of course Kevin Costner, but also for Scott Glenn, who she most recently saw as the reporter in Courage Under Fire and in Backdraft. She also first saw Scott Glenn in The Hunt for Red October and The Silence of the Lambs, and needs to see more of him. Like in Silverado and Training Day with Denzel.

Mike LL

Cassie, for more of Kevin Kline check out Silverado. It also features Danny Glover and a (very) young Kevin Costner. PS: Kline earned the enmity of teenage boys everywhere (myself included) when he married the gorgeous Phoebe Cates in the mid-80s, thereby crushing our delusion that we might someday meet and make her fall in love with us. Darn him!!!

Just Plain Bob

Fierce Creatures is enjoyable reunion of this cast and worth a +1 on the ol' popcornrequests.com folks.

Christopher Smith

The boys from Monty Python kept the comedy flowing,I love JLC and her feisty witt,You're right Cassie about Kevin Kline,he is a good actor with a broad range..'Grand Canyon' 1991⭐⭐⭐⭐ w/Steve Martin & Danny Glover is a prime example of his acting and his athletic abilities..

Celeste McAllister

In our dismal current era of film comedy - bloated by improv, populated by one-note comedians, and directed like a sitcom - I often think with great fondness of A Fish Called Wanda. It's a model of tight comic writing and direction, with vividly realised characters, and it still makes me laugh harder than most movies after umpteen viewings.

Henry Graham

John Cleese has always spoken with some pride that a film he'd written had caused someone to literally die laughing.

Henry Graham

Never seen this somehow. All I know besides the genre and the cast is that a dude laughed so much watching this he actually died in the theater, and it happened in my country! Might be time to give it a watch.
