Grumpy Old Men (1993) - Full Reaction

Really enjoyed how this movie was about something different – older characters and their quirky love story. It was fun and heartwarming, especially with Ariel brightening up everything! The way they included the holiday season was just right, not too much, just part of their lives. And those two main characters – so endearing yet hilariously mean to each other!
Sorry for the switch! Carly was able to fit this into her schedule so we pivoted. With that said, Dog Day Afternoon will be up tomorrow. Hope you're all having a fantastic Monday!

My favorite Walter Matthau movie has always been The Bad News Bears. I was the same age as the kids were in the movie, when it came out. It rang kinda true with the no seat belts, open container in the car - with a bunch of kids hanging onto - slice of Americana.... Aaaah, the 70's.

I've mentioned this a few times but if you like Jack Lemmon you have to watch "Some Like it Hot" with Jack, Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis (Jame Lee Curtis' dad).. Listed as one of the greatest comedies of all time too.

Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon have had an incredible chemistry together, starring in Neil Simon's original 'The Odd Couple'. They did three more movies together, one of which was 'Grumpier Old Men', another was 'Out to Sea' and the final time together was 'The Odd Couple II', if you ever get the chance after going thru all these movies you have planned, you should check out some of their movies, namely ones written by Neil Simon. Glad you two watched this one.

One of my all time favorite movies!! You have to watch the second one, "Grumpier Old Men". It's one of the rare sequels that's every bit as good as the original.

My grandparents moved from Mankato Minnesota in the 1930s to California, so with Ariel moving from California to Wabasha which isn't too far from there I feel like I can relate to a reverse of cultural trading going on in this film. I'm glad to have finally rewatched this as an adult so I can relate to it more.

100% the same. I was expecting the plot and all of the gold Burgess Meredith drops in the sequel … still enjoy this one a ton but hope they react to the sequel as well.

This has been a problem in the past. We do not put ads on these videos, YouTube unfortunately does even though they are unlisted. The only way to get around it is to use the download at the moment. We are still trying to figure out how to avoid this. Sorry about that :(

What a heartfelt reaction to this wonderful movie. 😊
I first saw this movie with my parents when it came out. I was still a teenager then and just found the antics of the old guys funny, while my parents pretty much reacted like the both of you did, my mother even more emotional. Now that I'm on their side of forty and experienced some life myself, I suddenly understood their emotional reaction to this movie much better. Funny how growing up changes the view you experience things. It was like watching this movie for the first time again. 🙂🤔
And thanks to the other patrons for introducing both of these acting legends to Cassie and Carly. 🙂
I highly recommend you to watch "Grumpier Old Men", one of the rare sequels equally as good as the first one. I could recommend you easily their whole filmography, there are some real classics amongst it. For example Walter Matthau in "Cactus Flower", Goldie Hawns first major role (at 24), which she won an Oscar for. And of course "Some Like It Hot" with Jack Lemmon, Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis, probably the best screwball comedy ever made. 🤩 That is definitely a big "must see". 🙂🙏

They were best friends in real life and were in 10 movies together. They died within a year of each other; they were buried in the same cemetery. They both are great actors. It would be hard for me to pick one over the other. You have seen Jack Lemmon in The Apartment. You should watch The Out-of-Towners with him, that is so funny.

It took me longer to get to it then I would have liked, but your reaction was exactly as I’d hoped. It had been a little while since I’d seen it, and it took me awhile to realize a lot of my favourite Burgess Meredith lines are from the sequel. Hope you get to it soon!

Whilst skipping Denzel's "Pelham" one could probably find (alphabetically anyway) his "Pelican" as in "The Pelican Brief" - which would also bring Julia Roberts back onto the channel in wonderful John Grisham (The Firm, A Time To Kill, Runaway Jury and several others Cassie hasn't seen) fashion!

This movie was a delight to rewatch, and I enjoyed the reaction as well. My favorite childhood comedic duo was Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill, but Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon were high up there as well. They both had successful solo carriers, but I think most people remember them in their roles together. Fittingly, even their stars on Hollywood Boulevard are next to each other: https://clipground.com/images/hollywood-boulevard-clipart-13.jpg
I remember this movie and its sequel were quite big hits back in the day. It revitalized both their carriers and as a result they made several more films together in the 90s. These were frequently broadcasted on television during the late 90s and I've seen them numerous times as a teen. I can highly recommend its sequel, GRUMPIER OLD MEN, which is equally great and has some great additions to the cast. But if you would like to see them younger during their prime, then THE ODD COUPLE (1968) is probably the best choice.

I think Cassie would have recognized Jack Lemmon by name but she and Carly were going back and forth with the popcorn she missed seeing it during the opening credits. His appearance was vastly different than it was in The Apartment so I can't blame her for not recognizing him. Also, that was Kevin Pollock playing Jacob who was also in A Few Good Men & The Usual Suspects. My favorite Jack Lemmon performance was in The Days of Wine and Roses. He was so good in that.

There have been some other Jack Lemon movies that have been highly requested here in the comments over the years besides GRUMPIER OLD MEN. Namely SOME LIKE IT HOT 1959 (with Jamie Lee Curtis' dad, Tony Curtis), MISTER ROBERTS 1955 (the first of Lemon's two Oscar wins with Henry Fonda and James freaking Cagney), and of course THE ODD COUPLE 1968 with Matthau.

Totally missable (and completely irrelevant) fun fact. After his night with Ariel, when John cracks his eggs into the skillet, he gets a piece of egg shell in the pan and they never show him remove it, nor apparently reshoot the scene neither. For some reason that scene has always disturbed me, probably irrationally, but yuck! I loath egg shells in my eggs and it always disgusts me when I run into one. I'll spend 10 minutes trying to dig around to find even a tiny piece of egg shell when I know one got in with my eggs. I used to be amazed nobody else ever notices. Was hoping one of you two would notice, but no dice. Now I'm starting to think I'm just weird.
As other have pointed out, Grumpier Old Men is equally great as well, but especially make sure you get around to The Odd Couple - the OG Lemmon and Matthau movie.

If these two young women only knew the rich and monumental-legendary LEMMON/MATHAU history and ANN MARGRET! (I can't wait until Sophia Lorren enters the mix!) It was a great PiB reaction but as 'GRUMPIER' and 'ODD' and 'LIKING HOT' (Tony and MARYLIN) enters Cassie and Carly's awareness, they will appreciate this wonderful film even more than the classic it is!

I love that Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau made a lot of great movies together when they were younger and it’s obvious watching this that they have remained good friends and had a blast making this movie. Cassie and Carly, I hope you do watch Grumpier Old Men, they made another movie in the 90’s called Out to Sea, but I also hope you check out some of their early work. So fun.
And let’s not forget Ann-Margret, one of the most famous sex symbols and actresses according to her IMDb and she’s still got it.

This movie was tailor made for the comedy team of Jack Lemon and Walter Matthau who appeared in ten movies together, co starred in eight of them. The most important of them being this movie, The Odd Couple (1968) and in my opinion The Fortune Cookie (1966). There is a sequel to this movie, Grumpier Old Men (1995) and their last movie together was actually The Odd Couple II (1998).
I was wondering if Cassie was going to recognize Jack Lemon from The Apartment, but that movie was made some 30 plus years before this one, I can see where she didn't make the connection. But his mannerisms and voice are the same all those years apart.
Ann Margaret was a big singing and dancing star from the 1960's. She had a rumored affair with Elvis when they made Viva Las Vegas together from 1964.
This reaction was too cute and sweet with Cassie and Carly loving the sentimental goings on. A very successful holiday treat I will watch again and again.

Never watched this film when it was released as it didn't appeal to me. Jack Lemmon though, I've enjoyed his work in Some like it hot. The best film I've seen him in is 𝗚𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗚𝗹𝗲𝗻 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝘀. It also stars Alan Arkin, who you've just watched as grandpa in Little Miss Sunshine, and Al Pacino, who you'll watch in Dog Day Afternoon. It also has Alec Baldwin, The brother of William Baldwin, who was Brian in Backdraft. Also, it has Ed Harris (often confused as Viggo Mortensen! and Kevin Spacey. It's a powerhouse all male cast. Worth a watch imho!

Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau paired up in several movies, most famously in “The Odd Couple.” I’m a Matthau fan, in particular. A couple of really great Walter Matthau movies from the 70s to check out: “Charley Varrick” and “The Taking of Pelham One Two Three.” Both are heist flicks and could be included in the next heist poll. PS: Be sure to check out the ORIGINAL “Pelham” movie, not the tepid remake - one of the few Denzel Washington movies not worth seeing IMO.
