Courage Under Fire (1996) - Full Reaction

Denzel is the best! This was so good, so sad, so well done, so thoughtful. I liked that it showed the Veteran struggles with also remembering those who died. Sorry this one is late, hope you enjoy!

As you mentioned, it does somewhat show what the returning service member and the spouse and children deal with, but not all the daily struggles of a military family. Everyone in a military family services. Our parents shape us in their image.

Matt Mabry

He (Denzel) was asking about whether or not the M16 ran out of ammo or not, because during the rescue, he's trying to find out if Walden was still firing away and they left her behind, and dropped the explosives while she was still fighting off the enemy.

YOU NEED TO WATCH MEN OF HONOR OR GENERAL"S DAUGHTER

Jayson Phillips

Thank you both for your service.

Robin Craft

I did. And I cried after just watching this again.

Robin Craft

I just got the joke. Very clever. 😁

Zane From Canada

And he will “pop up” in Secretariat when she eventually gets to it too!

Cole Jennett

The actor who played Tony Gartner was Scott Glenn. He popped up in a lot of movies in the 80's, 90's, and 2000's. He's such a fantastic character actor. You definitely remember him from a few movies you reacted to: He was Alan Sheppard in The Right Stuff (1983), Captain Mancuso in The Hunt For Red October (1990), and Jack Crawford in The Silence Of The Lambs (1991). 😁 You'll see him show up again in Backdraft (1991). And when you circle back to the Western genre, and if the requests and polls are favorable, you'll see him again in Silverado (1985) with Kevin Kline, Kevin Costner, and Danny Glover. 🤠🤠🤠🤠

Zane From Canada

I no longer have the DVD for this, but I watched with the commentary track, and I remember Edward Zwick talking about a conversation he had with Denzel the first day he was acting with Matt Damon. He said Denzel came up to him between takes or at lunch and said "Who is this kid? He's incredible." (I'm paraphrasing, it's been years since I listened to the commentary).

Brent Petty

Good call. In Ebert's review of Courage Under Fire, he specifically mentions Rashomon as well.

Brent Petty

Wonderful reaction Cassie! Very heartfelt! I haven’t watched this film in many years. I forgot how powerful this movie is. I remember at the time it came out there was a lot of talk about how Matt Damon lost so much weight for the role. To more accurately portray a drug addicted soldier haunted by his past. Which kinda overshadowed how good this film is. And how it shows the psychological effects of war and how soldiers and their families have to deal with that long after the actual fighting is over. A worthy choice for Veteran’s/Remembrance Day. Thank you to all the men and women of our Armed Services. Past and present. Your service, bravery, and sacrifice do not go unnoticed

Robert da Spruce

Great reaction! I hadn't seen this movie is like 20 years and forgot how good it was. Definitely excited for Cassie's watch-along to the most recent poll winner, the amazing "13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi".

David Crabtree

Haven't seen Rashomon, but I was struck by the similarities with Errol Morris's documentary The Thin Blue Line--you watch different versions of the same scene as the facts emerge in the process of solving a mystery.

Carol_White

if you like this you should watch "Basic" with John Travolta and Samuel L Jackson. its another military mystery where during the investigation we get so many different versions of events

vito virgilio

Timothy Bottoms played George W. Bush in both parodies and straight dramatic movies.

Great, Great Film. A Phenomenal Cast. Meg Ryan doesn't get enough credit. This film really dives deep into the Mind of a Soldier. The sense of Duty that a soldier feels and the fears they have of failing their fellow man or comrades or themselves. I never joined the service, so I can only admire the Men & Women who do, and sacrifice so much for their Families and Country. Thank You to All the Men & Women who have served this Great Country. You Honored Us, so We Honor You. We know it's not enough. --------------------------------- About that Cast. So many great actors in small roles. I guess they are technically cameos... some bigger than others. Sean Astin (who Cassie recognized, +1)... that was an easy one. Bronson Pinchot (Bruno, the White House aide)... Great comedic actor, starred in sitcom Perfect Strangers for 8 seasons. Recommend... Beverly Hills Cop (1984), True Romance (1993) and The Langoliers (1995). Bruce McGill (Monfriez's boxing trainer)... Cassie has seen him in My Cousin Vinny as Sheriff Farley; Runaway Jury as Judge Harkin; Cinderella Man as Jimmy Johnston. Recommend... National Lampoon's Animal House (1978), Into the Night (1985) and A Perfect World (1993). Albert Hall (the Speaker at Karen Walden's graduation)... a Great character actor going back to the early 70s. I'll always remember him as Sal Martinella (Sallie Baby) from Rookie of the Year (1993) who could never get Rowengartner's name right, ie. Rulingfurter, Gardenhoser, Raviboozer. Recommend... Apocalypse Now (1979), Malcom X (1992) and Devil in a Blue Dress (1995). Kathleen Widdoes (Karen Walden's mother)... Tony Award nominated and 4 Time Daytime Emmy nominated actress for her role on the Soap Opera, As the World Turns, which she appeared on from 1985 - 2010. She has been acting on Stage, TV and Film since the late 50s. Recommend... The Group (1966), all-star female cast directed by Sidney Lumet. Richard Venture (Boylar's father)... Stage, TV and Film actor going back to the late 50s. Cassie saw him in Scent of a Woman at Thanksgiving Dinner. Recommend... All the President's Men (1976), Being There (1979) and Heartbreak Ridge (1986). Diane Baker (Boylar's mother)... Perhaps the biggest Cameo. Film actress going back to the late 50s. She spoke no lines in Courage Under Fire, but you still knew what she was feeling. Recommend... The Diary of Anne Frank (1959), The Prize (1963) and Marnie (1964). Lastly, the song Meg Ryan's Karen Walden was singing in the film... "Angel from Montgomery" written by John Prine, is my Mother's Favorite Song. Here is Bonnie Raitt singing her version from her 1974 album Streetlights. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toJ3ZYWRh24

You can really see the influence of Rashomon (1950)--directed by Kurosawa, who made Seven Samurai. Strange, seeing Diane Baker in such a small role! She did well, though.

Ben Livingstone

Cassie, I don't know which movies are harder on you. Scary movies or war movies. Great Reaction.

Rick Williams

Watching your reaction reminded me of how good Lou Diamond Phillips can be and how much you'd love him in the film-based-on-a-true-story, "La Bamba."

Jimmie V

A video in the spirit of Remembrance Day or Memorial Day I think Cassie would appreciate (7.5 minutes, warning- it is a tear-jerker)- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8k9Si28k0Fk

This was an extremely fitting movie to watch for Veterans/Remembrance Day. It should be remembered that here in the States, Veterans Day was originally Armistice Day, the day that commemorated the end of the the First World War, when the war ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, 11/11/1918. Great performances by all concerned, and Cassie being so moved made this another memorable reaction, of yet another film I had never seen before.

Mike LL

I just noticed the guy playing President Bush is the same one from Naked Gun 2 1/2. Are there any other movies where the same actor plays the same character so completely different?

Mike Lemon

A lot of people kinda miss the ending where he see's her flying away in the helo. If you go and watch around 9:30-10:10 mark, its the scene where he's telling Sean Astin he gave the order for him to fire. Her helo is the one coming in taking injured and flying out.

Ryan Towell

Had never fully seen it. All the feels.

Omar

Wow. That was a great movie; and great reaction video.

Uncle Phoenix

L O L. Yes I meant the siege. I don’t know why I thought of under siege. Although I do you like that movie as well. Tommy Lee Jones is such a good bad guy.

Michael Lynch

I assume and hope you meant "The Siege" with Bruce Willis and Annette Benning and not the only decent thing Steven Seagull has ever done "Under Siege" with Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey. (I know I spelled his surname incorrectly)

Brian McGovern

The music you played before and after the movie, I hope that’s a one time only thing for Veterans Day. That was kind of annoying. I was trying to listen to your comments at the end, and there was bombastic music getting in the way.

Michael Lynch

love that movie!

Walter

Amen to that, Jon. Some of the best officers I’ve served with were women. I can say - after having retired not long ago - most of the old chauvinists and the men that carried the torch for those types of extreme attitudes, have been gone for quite a while. Meg Ryan does a great job in this (one of her very few non-romantic roles), as does Denzel of course. I’d also like to give a little credit to actress Regina Taylor who plays Meredith Serling and does an excellent job portraying a pretty typical, but caring & understanding military spouse. She also, seamlessly, played the wife of a soldier in a television series - The Unit - which was also quite good.

Ike

Cassie, not based on a true story, but an amalgamation of many stories. There were 'friendly fire' incidents. The 'green' images you see during the movie are infrared digital images, but very soon after we were in Iraq, and Kuwait, everything was upgraded to the more effective (and more expensive) Thermal imaging systems. It is still difficult to 'read' a silhouette of a vehicle or person using this technology and to tell friend from foe, but everything is chaotic in battle. By now we have more women in combat positions than we've ever had; fighter pilots, Marines, and soldiers. But there are still misogynistic dinosaurs who think women can't fight, or 'ruin' the integrity of a unit. Those old men are proven wrong daily, and someday I hope they stop spreading the idea that the only ‘good’ soldier is a CIS gendered White Man. I have served with brave, powerful, strong, courageous women, and I prefer them over some of the men I have served with.

Jon Johns

I think it's on her list of ones she watched prior to the channel unfortunately. It is a great movie and would no doubt be an amazing reaction by her (as are the rest of her reactions).

Brent Petty

Great reaction. All the performances were great. Denzel obviously. And the helicopter crew had to act out multiple variations of all those scenes. Brilliant. Thank you for reacting to this film.

Brent Petty

not only a great choice for Veteran’s Day, but also a great bit of 90s nostalgia as well; haven’t seen this one in quite some time, and look forward to the rewatch

JL_83

It's my favorite of his.

Robin Craft

Late? Nah, it's right on time for Veterans Day / Armistice Day here in the U.S.

Miles E Coburn

Another awesome Denzel movie is Under Siege.

Michael Lynch

🙌

Wes

Denzel is always great but Man on Fire is THE Denzel film imo

Odd Thomas

As always Cassie, thank you for watching these movies. Lest we forget.

The Gemini Man

Thanks for watching this

Bill Maurer

Oh heck yes! Did you get emotional when he was at the parents house? I cry every time I watch that scene.
