Remembrance Day/Veteran's Day Poll
Added 2023-10-30 15:58:04 +0000 UTCHere is this years November 11th Poll. I grew up in Canada and we called it Remembrance Day but I know here in the US it is Veteran's Day. I wanted to honor both with this poll. I will be watching Courage Under Fire this week for it, it was the runner-up in last years poll.
Here is the collection of past war movies I have watched on the channel
https://www.patreon.com/collection/60941
I pray for peace so hard these days, there is so little I can do, but one thing is I can remember and honor. I shared this last year but will again-a poem I memorized as a kid and has always been special to me.
Flanders Fields by Canadian Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

2023-11-07 19:56:20 +0000 UTCI'd like to have a Debra Winger week. This movie, Urban Cowboy and Terms of Endearment. Possibly would be one of Cassie's favorite movie weeks since she's started her channel.

2023-11-05 12:51:36 +0000 UTCDave, I never disparaged the heroes on the ground, but merely state fact that no stand-down order was given. The report by the House Intelligence Committee (led by Chairman Mike Rogers) said there was no stand-down order given. Mike Rogers (a soldier 1985-89) -- from east Alabama -- a conservative and a Christian, father of three, and married to his wife (Beth) for over 35 years. Rep. Tammy Duckworth, who lost both of her legs while serving in Iraq, stated: “Committee, after committee, after committee has found that there was no stand-down order,” noting that Gen. Petraeus testified the same. "[T]hree different committees have looked at this and have never found any evidence of any type of a stand-down order — period. There just wasn’t one.”

2023-11-05 07:12:03 +0000 UTCMAGA propaganda? This story took place in 2012. The politics of this incident occurred well before Donald Trump. You guys probably have not even seen this movie and yet you call it propaganda. The story is about the soldiers on the ground and not about the politics in Washington. The movie highlights the bravery of prior service members and contractors. Also, the movie is based off first hand accounts from people on the ground. I trust them much more than the media or politicians.

2023-11-03 23:11:48 +0000 UTCThere may not have been a stand down order from Washington but there was from the CIA chief that was on the ground. The movie never claims that a stand down order was given beyond that. Have you seen the movie? The big issue with Benghazi, regardless of what the government says, is that they did not send any support to help our own people. I am saying this as a veteran and someone who works in the weapon system testing community. Our military had plenty of assets available but chose to not send them for whatever reasons they claim. The bottom line is that the government screwed up and didn't want to admit it because it was an election year. If your only issue is the stand down order, then I think you can safely watch the movie and enjoy it.

Larry Darrell
2023-11-03 17:11:57 +0000 UTCThanks, Blaze. What's more, despite the protests of someone who hasn't seen the movie, this is not a 2-hour movie about an argument between the CIA station chief and the security team. They said they were told to stand-down and not cross town to help the ambassador, he said he only told them to wait while he arranged for additional local militia support for when they got there. Parse that however you like. They eventually went. Benghazi is the story of three great failures — the failure to either fortify or evacuate Benghazi when threats increased, the failure to adequately protect and support American personnel during the attack itself, and the failure to tell the American public after the attack of either the extent of the threat faced that day or why there was such a delay to provide support in a volatile part of the world. This film spends zero time on the last failure - that is the playground for politics. This film does show the consequences of first two failures. The security team fought like lions against overwhelming odds. Their valor was awe-inspiring, and this is that story. Dismissing this film as factually inaccurate is to smear them.

2023-11-03 13:58:03 +0000 UTCAll of those men served - and it's apparent you have not. They went back to civilian life and either couldn't adjust or couldn't make ends meet. Federal contracting is lucrative compared to other jobs these men could get and a common practice because the U.S. maintains a scaled down standing military force. Also, note the word "Federal" - these men were contracted to protect U.S. CIA and State Department Personnel. That is VERY different from mercenaries who will go fight anyone, anywhere for money. That was not these men - and I strongly doubt any of them would do that (if that was their nature, they could've easily turned to the Libyan forces and asked for more cash to join their side). Please educate yourself regarding the identity of these men and stop brandishing the military background of politicians like they're your own.

Let’s believe the politicians both republican and democrat who lie ALL THE TIME. Sorry I believe the guys on the ground who I have talked to in person. I’ve spent my whole adult life around guys like them. They would not have held up to respond to the embassy unless they were ordered to. It is also undisputed fact that not U.S. assets were sent to support them during the 13 hour siege. It’s even documented that Obama flew to Las Vegas with is wife during the attack to meet with Beyoncé and Jay-z.

2023-11-03 08:45:07 +0000 UTCHave you even seen the movie? The guys are real, the guys are named, they told their stories, and that's what it is. You keep harping on it like it's such an impossibility that, even if no one else in the government hesitated, that someone responsible for a CIA outpost filled with people and stocked to the brim with priceless intel would waffle at sending away all of the security there to protect him/them/it, at a volatile time that's already turned violent, when they need security more than ever, sending all the security off to possibly never return, that the only possible explanation is that the people who were boots-on-the-ground are just a conspiracy of boldfaced liars. This isn't China. Not every movie and memoir has to always and exclusively portray every government official to be perfectly self-sacrificing and infallible.

2023-11-03 01:22:06 +0000 UTCCeleste, this film is inaccurate- there was no stand down order given. I am gracious for your family's service. My grandfather stormed a Normandy beach on D-Day. Not sure which beach (my brother may know). My grandfather essentially never talked about it but did say he could hear bullets whistling by him. Before that, he was in North Africa in a tank and was awarded a medal for destroying a bridge. My other grandfather served in the occupation of Germany after Germany surrendered. My Dad was in the ROTC, but never served -- instead getting deferments for college and then as a professor. My family was close with a few Vietnam war veterans -who were like uncles to me -- but they really didn't talk about their experience. I can vaguely remember the Fall of Saigon in 1975. As an aside, me and my son (then a teenager) spent 15 days in Vietnam in 2015. We spent a couple days in Hue and saw where some of the most intense fighting took place during the Tet Offensive. Our guide said her father was NVA and was wounded. We stayed 4 days in Hanoi -- at our hotel, went into the same bomb shelter that Jane Fonda did during US bombing raids. We also spent time in the Mekong Delta where fighting took place late in the war.

From east Alabama -- a conservative and a Christian, father of three, and married to his wife (Beth) for over 35 years.

2023-11-02 18:02:12 +0000 UTCAgree about the mud-flinging. It's sad that people can't just say, "I don't like this movie" or "I don't agree with its conclusions or presentation" and just move on. People can judge for themselves, or, best case, be inspired to do more research. For example: "Braveheart" is a fantastic movie and an incredible piece of film-making and acting on Mel Gibson's part. But as a historical document, not so much. Still, the number of people who saw the film then went on to read about William Wallace, Scottish independence, and or King Edward's rule after seeing that is exponentially larger than if it'd never been made or been a huge hit. We're all big kids here. We can decide for ourselves.

2023-11-02 10:36:49 +0000 UTCIts me Dave, again, movies are inherently political. You have a naive faith that we can talk about movies--war movies, no less--without ever touching upon politics. This does not excuse incivility or ad hominem attacks, and it also doesn't mean that a discussion 13 Hours should veer into side-discussions of what really happened on 1/6 or the history of American policies in the Mideast. But an argument that a film constitutes fascist propaganda is proper and making this argument should not merit personal attacks or censorship. Discussing movies is "fun" only if you refrain from actual discussion.

2023-11-02 10:29:52 +0000 UTCI edited to delete "head in sand" within seconds after posting. Sorry. It was more about not wanting to be blind to evil stuff out there in considering what movie to vote for in a poll. But not well thought out and, as you noted, I deleted it. Thank you for your suggestion regarding sufficient language, which I will follow. I don't want to have political discussions here. I truly don't and won't. This instance threw me (I won't be thrown again) of this movie having an insidious history and purpose. Again, I will ignore any shocker going forward, even if seemingly out of place for the channel -- no matter what -- I won't comment. I could quit being a patron, but probably won't do that because I like Cassie's reactions too much. She comes across as a true empath. Thanks again.

2023-11-02 07:25:10 +0000 UTCCarol, I'm not saying we can't discuss inaccuracies or problems with movies here. That's half the fun most of the time. But politics does not need to be a part of it. As evidenced by the long thread of comments in this post alone, political talk often separates us, and also drives some wonderful people with wonderful insight away from the community. I'm pretty sure we don't want to be driving people away. Discussing movies is so much fun! In my lifetime politics has turned from disagreement with the other side into the wanton desire to not just disagree but to destroy the other side. The lack of respect shown to each other in some of these comments, regardless of who started the conversation, is why politics should have no place here.
Dave
2023-11-02 04:45:29 +0000 UTCYour use of the term "right-wing propaganda" makes your reply political. Couple that with your original opening sentence "Head in the sand.", implying you know my political preferences (which you most certainly do not), makes your statement an attempt to engage in political discourse in order to make your point. As a moderator for Cassie and Ben and the channel, I appreciate the reconsideration of your original reply evident in your now-edited reply to my statement, but I also repeat my request to leave politics out of the discussion. The film may be propaganda, it may be right-wing. A simple "This film is inaccurate- there was no stand down order given" would have been a sufficient statement, and certainly free from being considered political. So please, leave politics out of it.
Dave

2023-11-02 04:33:47 +0000 UTCYes this is a reaction channel, but this is also, according to Cassie at least, a place to discuss the movies themselves. A.) Movies have, like, meaning. B.) I can't know if I'm offended by a movie until I watch it;, so C.) After watching a movie, if I have problems with it, this Patreon seems like a legitimate space to express my concerns. While it might be regretted, this will inevitably bleed into political discussion--refer again to point A.
Carol_White
2023-11-02 04:13:42 +0000 UTCPatrons when voting in a poll on the channel can legitimately choose to comment that 13 Hours is right-wing propaganda. 2023-11-02 02:46:08 +0000 UTCIn case you've forgotten, this is a movie reaction channel. That's it, plain and simple. Cassie reacts to movies. That's it, plain and simple. The selection of films done for this or any other poll in this channel is done so blindly- Cassie hasn't seen them. No consideration is given to a film's "agenda", real or imagined. Cassie and Carly do not give public endorsement to the agenda, real or imagined, of any film in any poll. It's just simply Cassie and occasionally Carly sitting in a bed watching a movie, recording their reaction to it, and sharing that reaction with us. Being offended by a movie's agenda, politics, accuracy (or lack thereof), modesty (or lack thereof), or existence is anybody's and everybody's right. If you have a problem with a film, don't watch. If you disagree with a film, don't watch. If you dislike a certain actor, director, producer, production company, catering service, wardrobe department, theme song, ... don't watch. It really is that simple. Remember that Popcorn In Bed is not a space designed for political, religious, or social debate. It is a reaction channel. That's it, plain and simple. It is not a place where we tear at each other. If that's the sandbox you want to play (or fight) in, remember that the PiB playground doesn't have (or need) a sandbox. Remember that Cassie is just reacting to a movie, and remember that is the reason you showed up here - to watch someone react to a movie. If you've come for anything else, I kindly ask you to go find that something else somewhere else. Keep it down - I'm trying to watch a movie with my friend.

2023-11-02 01:48:00 +0000 UTCParamount wanted the movie to be political in their effort to recruit a right-wing audience. The movie is intentionally misleading for political reasons = propaganda. There is nothing wrong with pointing out that a movie is propaganda. The movie is not a documentary but presents itself as having a factual basis and intentionally gives factual inaccuracies for political reasons. 13 hours (2016) - lauded by Trump and Fox News. Trump funded a special screening of 13 Hours for his supporters, and in which the Trump campaign stated: "Mr. Trump would like all Americans to know the truth [sic] about what happened at Benghazi."

2023-11-02 00:48:03 +0000 UTCI've already said in another comment, but a film about a real life event with real political implications that is still fresh on people's minds and part of current political discourses makes that movie inherently political. But that's still no excuse for the mud flinging going on in this comment section (which you'll probably see more of when it shows up on Youtube).
Mario
2023-11-01 20:38:42 +0000 UTCI don't know if it "had" to be political. Every movie ever made about a historical event is inaccurate BECAUSE it's a movie and not a documentary. And every documentary has a perspective, too and can easily be discerned almost from the outset. If someone doesn't like a film they should certainly vote against it and feel free to say, "I don't like it, it strays from the facts" or "The plot and pacing were slow" or whatever. But to start bringing politics into it, or to vilify large segments of the population in their comments, seems to be beyond the intent of this group.

I can only imagine the massive amount of suggestions she gets (Constantine), However, I am, and I know we are all here because of how she reacts to movies. She alone is the only reason I am here typing this comment because I so thoroughly enjoy her reactions, her input and her honest opinion on how she receives a message or meaning in a movie and that brings me so much joy and peace to my life. War movies will always bring controversy, It's Always the why this, why that, against, because of this, because of that. It will always be sensitive but that's why some of these movies are made, to show the events that happened. its up to the watcher to see if so. - Semper Fidelis

2023-11-01 04:57:24 +0000 UTCDown Periscope!! I love that movie. Just not for this category. But thank you for reminding me of this movie- adding it to requests. The whale imitation never gets old. My brother served in the navy for 20 years. He “drove” the subs. Well that’s what he SAYS he did. Lol. But Down Periscope is one of his fav movies of all time. He actually can’t watch any serious submarine movies- they take him to a dark and sad place…the times that he doesn’t want to remember. Movies like Down Periscope remind him of all the good times. Him and his crew used to watch it all the time while on tours and in training actually.

2023-11-01 01:36:27 +0000 UTCI LOVE An Officer and a Gentleman! Gere at his finest! But I put this movie in more of the love story category. Or relationships in general. This movie, and again, I ❤️ this movie- it’s more about relationships in general, and the immense power that they have in your life…how they can influence who you are as a person. Relationships with the opposite sex, friendship, and also the relationship that you have with yourself…who you really are vs how you see yourself and who/what you are striving to be/become. When I think of military, remembrance, and the nation/people that I should remember proudly- I don’t think of this movie. Should cut Officer and a Gentleman and sub The Covenant (true story) with Gyllenhaal

As for bigoted, the right wing who pushed/promoted this movie wins that award. People who believe there should not be a black history month, support the discrimination against gays depicted in Philadelphia (1993), agree with the logic of the Australian government in Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002), think kids of color (e.g., in Rabbit-Proof Fence) are ugly or monkeys, don't believe Schindler's List (1993) (indeed, push that the holocaust is a hoax), sympathetic to the behavior of Percy in The Green Mile (1993), want to teach in school there were positives of slavery for the slave in direct contradiction with the factual depiction in 12 Years A Slave (2013), don't like Prey (2022) or Barbie (2023) because woke, identify with the Richard Dreyfuss character of The American President (1995), side with Barnes over Elias in Platoon (1986), etc.

2023-10-31 21:31:54 +0000 UTC@Mike Lemon, When you make a movie about a real life event that had political implications, it becomes a political movie. So people bringing current politics into the discussion is inevitable (especially when the event and movie are still fresh in people's minds and continues to be cited in political discourse today).
Mario
2023-10-31 21:16:46 +0000 UTC@Mario- "that was OP." Which is who I initially replied to. "But Trump himself did praise the movie" Who cares? Ted Cruz likes The Princess Bride, it makes no difference to the movie at all. If Pol Pot liked The Wizard of Oz, The Wizard of Oz would still be a good movie. There was absolutely zero reason to bring current politics into a discussion about the movie, and little reason for "then politics" before the reaction.
Mike Lemon
2023-10-31 20:55:06 +0000 UTC@Mike Lemon I didn't call it "MAGA pure propaganda", that was OP. But Trump himself did praise the movie and had implored people to see it and the idea that the "MAGA" crowd didn't exist prior to Trump is a little misleading. Those people had already existed for a long while, they just went by different names over the years (in Trump's case, many of his supporters were also part of the Tea Party movement, among other groups).
Mario
2023-10-31 20:43:05 +0000 UTC@Mario - Tell me how, "MAGA pure propaganda." is needed when discussing a movie that started filming before Trump announced, released nearly a year before the election, and is about an event from 2012? A simple, "I don't like this movie because I think it took massive liberties with the events depicted," would suffice. There was absolutely zero need to get political and bigoted to talk about it.
Mike Lemon
2023-10-31 20:30:36 +0000 UTCI don't usually leave comments on these patreon posts, so while unfortunate, it doesn't surprise me this category has invoked such strong reactions. Please be kinder to each other so we can avoid the latter from happening.
Mario
2023-10-31 20:02:12 +0000 UTC@Jacob Antony I don't know if the book was intended to be political but the movie, intentional or not, certainly became one (Trump himself praised it and implored people to go see it).
Mario
2023-10-31 19:51:41 +0000 UTCI mean, the people who make up the "MAGA" crowd had already existed, they just went by different names over the years. In fact, many of them were part of the Tea Party movement before Trump came along.
Mario
2023-10-31 19:38:25 +0000 UTC@Mike Lemon I think 13 Hours is inherently a political movie, intentional or not, so there really was no way to avoid that discussion (unless the comment section was shut off or something).

2023-10-31 16:40:28 +0000 UTCFrom the bi-partisan Senate Intelligence Committee report: "Although some members of the security team expressed frustration that they were unable to respond more quickly to the Mission compound," there was "no evidence of intentional delay or obstruction by the Chief of Base or any other party." And the Republican-lead report by the House Armed Services Committee agreed. This is about facts and getting history right, of which Michael Bay is probably the least qualified to do so. Pearl Harbor was straight up insulting, painting a true life tragedy around a fictional romance, which consumed a large portion of the film. If you look up the historical accuracy of Pearl Harbor you’ll find small and large inaccuracies in how the battle unfolded, what planes were used, and the flying abilities of the planes at the time, just to name a few. All sacrificed for the sake of entertainment, by a director who famously said “I make movies for teenage boys. Oh dear, what a crime.” Well it should be criminal to falsely portray tragic events so inaccurately. And I’m supposed to suddenly lend credibility to Michael Bay? Nope.

I just watched a podcast featuring a survivor of the event that released on the 10th anniversary, which coincidentally happened on September 11th. And while it's made by Michael Bay, 3 of the survivors worked as consultants on the film. It's controversial because politically it was described as a protest turned violent, but looking at the facts, it's easy to see that it was pre-planned and strategically carried out, which makes it a terrorist attack. The military contractors and others with the knowledge of the attack layed the blame at a politician feet and because she was a political opponent of Donald Trump, it was labeled a MAGA propaganda movie. Even though the book that the movie was adapted from was released years before the election.

I voted An Officer and a Gentlemen (1987), which I think Cassie would like the best. My daughter (not much younger than Cassie) likes that movie. Overall, a good list in the poll. I like The Thin Red Line (1998). My 2nd choice. Surreal. Star-studded cast. I like the two WWI movies (refreshing to have WWI instead of WWII or Vietnam). I liked Hamburger Hill (1987) as a young adult. I like Born on the 4th of July (1989) but depressing (yet, I guess most war movies are).

2023-10-30 22:25:32 +0000 UTCDitto. It's shameful that MAGA politicized this. There is no evidence of a “stand down” order (as falsely given in the movie) that would have stopped American help from reaching the compound. And it’s unclear that any different decisions on the night of September 11, 2012—from the top brass in Washington to the CIA at the annex next door—could have saved the ambassador. An issue was that security funding for US embassies worldwide had been cut.

2023-10-30 22:22:08 +0000 UTCThere is a lot of great picks here. born on the Fourth of July and thank you for your service depict more after they come home. Which is, difficult, but needed to see. A great reminder that we owe it to the men and women that come home from war, certain benefits that were promised that as a whole we often don’t keep. A tough but thought provoking watch certainly.

2023-10-30 21:22:31 +0000 UTCA really good film in the war genre is “A Midnight Clear”(1992). The acting is amazing and the story is captivating. 2023-10-30 21:21:26 +0000 UTCRichard Attenborough's directorial debut World War I film musical Oh! What a Lovely War (1969) is a brilliantly powerful, moving film with an all-star cast including Laurence Olivier, John Mills, John Gielgud, Maggie Smith, Vanessa Redgrave, Jean Pierre Cassel and Ian Holm. I think that film would make a really great reaction during a Remembrance Day/Veteran's Day. It has a very powerful moving ending and on the director's DVD commentary Attenborough himself is very close to tears watching that final scene.

2023-10-30 20:30:20 +0000 UTCI was lucky enough to see Private Ryan at one of the exclusive premiers. Before we went in, 17 D-Day vets came into the green room/pre-premier area. I was in my early 30s but understood well that everything changed. This wasn't a movie anymore. I sat next to two of the vets. More than one of the 17 had to leave during the first 30 mins. I was next to two Airborne. One leaned into me and said, "Those guys on the beach never had a chance." This from a man who jumped out of a perfectly good airplane under heavy ack-ack and tracer fire in the dark and landed under MG-42 fire behind enemy lines. I couldn't say anything during or after. We all were crying.

2023-10-30 20:05:43 +0000 UTCBut they aren't out. They chose to go back and kill for money. They also get paid to risk their lives. And yes, I know enlisted soldiers get paid, but unlike mercs they can't just decide to leave whenever they want to and don't make anywhere near what the "contractors" do. As for the time they spent in the real military, of course I respect that, my father was a WWII vet, and I respect all real soldiers. But that's not what this movie is about. And sorry a private contractor (merc) isn't the same as a real soldier, not in my eyes anyway. They make the choice, and live (or die) with the consequences of that choice. I really find it strange that mercenaries were looked down upon by most people until they started working for corporations and called themselves contractors. That's some nice PR work there, I'll give them that.

2023-10-30 19:22:01 +0000 UTCI will never vote for a Michael Bay film, especially one where the facts are disputed by the CIA officer who was there. “There never was a stand-down order,” the officer – the former chief of the so-called Annex who identified himself as ‘Bob’ – told the Washington Post. “At no time did I ever second-guess that the team would depart.”

2023-10-30 19:20:40 +0000 UTCThe soldiers at Benghazi weren't US military, they were private "contractors". That's the euphemism they use for mercenaries. The only difference is that contractors work for a corporation while mercenaries work for themselves, but they're basically the same thing. They're only called contractors because the word mercenary has such a bad connotation The idea that this movie is winning a poll to honor veterans who volunteered their service for their country is disturbing, to say the least.

2023-10-30 19:18:15 +0000 UTCFlanders Field is a classic, but I consider the best WW1 poem to be the "horrible" The Parable of the Old Man and the Young, by Wilfred Owen (who jdj830 already mentioned): So Abram rose, and clave the wood, and went, And took the fire with him, and a knife. And as they sojourned both of them together, Isaac the first-born spake and said, My Father, Behold the preparations, fire and iron, But where the lamb for this burnt-offering? Then Abram bound the youth with belts and straps, and builded parapets and trenches there, And stretchèd forth the knife to slay his son. When lo! an angel called him out of heaven, Saying, Lay not thy hand upon the lad, Neither do anything to him. Behold, A ram, caught in a thicket by its horns; Offer the Ram of Pride instead of him. But the old man would not so, but slew his son, And half the seed of Europe, one by one.

2023-10-30 19:00:12 +0000 UTCVeterans Day is very important to many people, especially me! My Grandpa served in the Navy in WWII, he was almost stationed at Pearl Harbor before it was bombed, but luckily he didn't get there until after the surprise attack! My Grandpa's brother I want to say served in the Marines, but was unfortuantly one of the many POW's that was captured by the Japanese along with Filipino allies, and was butchered by the Japanese in a savage war crime known as The Bataan Death March! My vote is for THE THIN RED LINE, it's a pretty good movie from what I can tell, I've only seen bits and pieces of it in the past and it involves the Battle of Guadalcanal, something that you've seen before in the mini series you watched a long time ago THE PACIFIC! It's got a great cast of actors! By the looks of it I can see it's not winning, oh well! I'm down with anything! Too bad you don't have Memphis Belle on the list, that is a good movie and I know you'll love it! Sean Astin (Samwise) is in it lol! 2023-10-30 17:16:36 +0000 UTCThank you for picking Courage Under Fire! It is a great film, and one Carly could 100% watch. It is set against the backdrop of Desert Shield/Desert Storm in 1991, and there is some war violence, it is almost more of a investigational movie that is set in the military. It also has some big names involved in it: Denzel, Matt Damon, Meg Ryan (probably her best performance). There is also a small role for Sean Astin (Samwise from LOTR), and it is directed by Edward Zwick (Glory, Legends of the Fall, and The Last Samurai).

2023-10-30 17:07:31 +0000 UTCBecause we like to be different I guess, the US will be celebrating Veterans Day, which honors and celebrates the service of all veterans, our Remembrance Day is “Memorial Day”, which is observed in May. I’ll wish for Memphis Belle next time (hey, maybe in May), but you’re already watched the movie that captures Remembrance/Memorial Day very well: “Taking Chance.” So, thanks for that! “13 Hours in Benghazi” is my vote because it’s nonfiction like “Taking Chance”, and not enough people are aware these events took place. 2023-10-30 16:57:20 +0000 UTCSTRANGE MEETING It seemed that out of battle I escaped Down some profound dull tunnel, long since scooped Through granites which titanic wars had groined. Yet also there encumbered sleepers groaned, Too fast in thought or death to be bestirred. Then, as I probed them, one sprang up, and stared With piteous recognition in fixed eyes, Lifting distressful hands, as if to bless. And by his smile, I knew that sullen hall,— By his dead smile I knew we stood in Hell. With a thousand fears that vision's face was grained; Yet no blood reached there from the upper ground, And no guns thumped, or down the flues made moan. “Strange friend,” I said, “here is no cause to mourn.” “None,” said that other, “save the undone years, The hopelessness. Whatever hope is yours, Was my life also; I went hunting wild After the wildest beauty in the world, Which lies not calm in eyes, or braided hair, But mocks the steady running of the hour, And if it grieves, grieves richlier than here. For by my glee might many men have laughed, And of my weeping something had been left, Which must die now. I mean the truth untold, The pity of war, the pity war distilled. Now men will go content with what we spoiled. Or, discontent, boil bloody, and be spilled. They will be swift with swiftness of the tigress. None will break ranks, though nations trek from progress. Courage was mine, and I had mystery; Wisdom was mine, and I had mastery: To miss the march of this retreating world Into vain citadels that are not walled. Then, when much blood had clogged their chariot-wheels, I would go up and wash them from sweet wells, Even with truths that lie too deep for taint. I would have poured my spirit without stint But not through wounds; not on the cess of war. Foreheads of men have bled where no wounds were. “I am the enemy you killed, my friend. I knew you in this dark: for so you frowned Yesterday through me as you jabbed and killed. I parried; but my hands were loath and cold. Let us sleep now. . . .” - Wilfred Owen, who died in battle a week before the Armistice

2023-10-30 16:49:48 +0000 UTCI would implore you to watch the original 1930 version of All Quiet on the Western Front instead of the recent German version. What’s so remarkable about the older film is that it universalizes the story, and invites all its listeners to understand what it’s like to be on the losing side of a war without dwelling on the historical particulars that would have been lost to the actual people on the ground in real time anyway. Whereas the new version feels an awful lot like a display of German self-pity, a justification for the same emotions they felt after WWI and we all know where that led. (And by the way, most German critics agree with me.) Some films I wish you would consider: Paths of Glory (1957). This combination war film/courtroom drama set in WWI and starring Kurt Douglas is succinct, intelligent, and deeply compelling. It’s directed by Stanley Kubrick, who later did Full Metal Jacket, but this is a far better movie imo. Judgment at Nuremberg (1961). This is another military courtroom drama and the ultimate example of the genre. Starring pretty much everyone, this should be required viewing for anyone who wonders how we can hold countries accountable for their behavior during wartime. Ran (1985). Akira Kurosawa’s masterpiece, a riveting, profound and visually stunning battle epic. Hair (1979). I know this seems like an odd choice, but this musical gives some valuable historical context to the Vietnam War and how it affected the attitudes of American youth. Speaking of which, I cast my vote for Born on the Fourth of July.

2023-10-30 16:35:45 +0000 UTCHere’s a little history on The Thin Red Line for anyone interested. The Thin Red Line is like no war film you’ve ever seen or will ever see again, it has just about every movie star in it imaginable of the era. The writer/director(Terence Malick) was legendary at the time. In the 1970s Malick made two landmark films(Badlands & Days of heaven) that were extremely well received. He was hailed as a visionary, a genius. He was the new popular kid in town. And then POOF. He disappeared. After Days of Heaven in 1978 he stopped making films. No one knew why. He just stopped and wasn’t heard from for another 20 years. Until 1998 when The Thin Red Line came out. Almost every actor wanted to work on the film. Major stars took reduced salaries just for the privilege of working on a new Terence Malick film. Some even had their scenes and characters cut out of the final edit. However… another World War 2 movie was released in 1998 by another MAJOR director. The director? Steven Spielberg. The movie? Saving Private Ryan. So in the press at the time it was “the battle of the two war films” Malick Vs Spielberg. While Thin Red Line was nominated for many Oscar’s, including best picture/director, it was Saving Private Ryan that became the huge box office and cultural hit/landmark. The Thin Red Line had its admirers to be sure. But it took awhile for the film to really become movie it is now. Some say it’s aged better than SPR. But really they are two vastly different films about two vastly different theatres of war.

2023-10-30 16:22:16 +0000 UTCLost opportunity: I would suggest Sahara (1943), a great H. Bogart movie. Cassie should see Lloyd Bridges as a 30 year old actor rather than only in his later career.

2023-10-30 16:20:35 +0000 UTCFirst Blood should be on this list even though it's a fictional film, but it does touch on the PTSD that comes from war.

2023-10-30 16:20:22 +0000 UTCOne of the few ones on the list to tell a vets story, and it's a good one! I agree 💯

2023-10-30 16:20:19 +0000 UTCGood one, I prefer Tora! Tora! Tora! Though it's a long one!

2023-10-30 16:19:35 +0000 UTCcannot wait for the Courage Under Fire reaction, have always had praise for that one and feel like not enough people talk about it…as far as the poll, regardless of which movie wins I feel confident you’ll get to Born on the Fourth of July eventually since it stars your good friend Mr. Tom Cruise, lol

2023-10-30 16:17:05 +0000 UTCThat is a tough choice, but I think I'm going with THE THIN RED LINE. It is a hard one though. Given it's going to be the 82nd anniversary, may I suggest TORA! TORA! TORA! (1970) as the war movie for the December? It is the better movie about the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Also, a very unique production because it is showing both sides of the conflict, filmed and directed by an American and a Japanese crew respectively. It may even be extended to a whole theme week. In that case, my follow-up suggestions are: - MIDWAY (2019), dealing with the aftermath of the attack and the better movie made about the battle of Midway. - THE FINAL COUNTDOWN (1980), a military themed movie also revolving around the attack in a very unique way and has one of the best aerial cinematography ever.

2023-10-30 16:17:01 +0000 UTCIt won't win, but, Born on the Fourth of July is truly about Veterans, not strictly a combat war movie, which is what the day is truly about, at least to me, a vet myself. All these are great "war movies" but only a few portray the life of a vet *after* combat. Semper Fidelis, Semper Paratus. 🪖🎖️
Jon Johns
2023-10-30 16:16:49 +0000 UTCIt is very good but perhaps not for Remembrance Day? It would be a great watch from the Valentine's list in February. It's more of a love story than a war movie.

2023-10-30 16:10:08 +0000 UTCOh! An Officer and a Gentleman. Cassie, this is not your typical Veteran’s Day movie as it’s more of a story about one officer and a love interest, but I hope you watch it. You asked about Richard Gere before he became a “silver fox” well… here you go.
Tara
2023-10-30 16:09:52 +0000 UTCOfficer and a Gentleman is a great movie, please make sure you watch it!!! Richard Gere and Debra Winger(80s movie queen)

2023-10-30 16:09:11 +0000 UTCYeah some of these for me as a Vet, doesn't make me think of Veterans Day at all. Officer and Gentleman, great film, but not a film for Veterans day. It's more of a love story and none of it is "real" it's very Hollywood take on flight school.
Ryan Towell
2023-10-30 16:07:27 +0000 UTC"Born on the 4th of July" was Tom Cruise's first really "heavy" role and is excellent. If the 2022 remake is as good as the original 1930 "All Quiet on the Western Front" that would also be worth watching. Arguably the best antiwar movie ever made, although for me that honor goes to Stanley Kubrick's "Paths of Glory" -- which needs to be on the next "war movie" poll!!
Paul Stelter
2023-10-30 16:07:18 +0000 UTCMy vote is 13 hours! Not only is it a hard watch (which I believe military movies should be). It is directly relevant to current affairs!

2023-10-30 16:07:11 +0000 UTCAs someone who's been underfire, 13 Hours is as real as it gets. Captures the real-time chaos and uncertainty of a battle, and in a place where they were truly on their own. Great acting and spectacularly put together.

2023-10-30 16:04:41 +0000 UTCFrom across the pond, may I suggest the greatest British war film, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943)? This masterpiece was heavily criticised by the British government at the time for its depiction of a friendship between British and German soldiers, but that is a testament to Powell and Pressburger's humanism - they never made straight propaganda pictures - and the film is an astonishingly beautiful and moving portrait of love, friendship, ageing and loss.

2023-10-30 16:03:34 +0000 UTCLovely poem, Cassie. Thank you for sharing. Some fine films on this poll (several of which I haven't seen yet). I know it probably doesn't have a prayer of winning, but I'm voting for THE THIN RED LINE because it is quite simply one of the greatest films I've ever seen from one of our greatest living directors. I would love to see more Terrence Malick on the channel. This film was my introduction to him and although I didn't quite know what to make of it at first, after watching a couple more movies of his (DAYS OF HEAVEN, THE NEW WORLD), I finally started to "get" his particular style of filmmaking and I think he's a genius: deep, thoughtful, unique and creator of some of the most beautiful images I've ever seen on a screen. My hope Is that one day maybe Cassie will react to my all-time favorite film: his masterpiece THE TREE OF LIFE. In the meantime, curious to see how this one turns out (and really hoping that the Michael Bay movie doesn't win). As always keep up the good work. :-)

2023-10-30 16:02:06 +0000 UTCVoting on the Cruise line here for Born on the Fourth of July even though it is not an easy watch. But I guess no war related movie is an easy watch. I haven't seen quite a few of these, one reason I am not voting for the early leader, All Quiet. I'd rather watch a not so recent film.

2023-10-30 16:01:52 +0000 UTCIt’s also Remembrance Day in the UK. You’re missing some British films from the list! It’s a tragedy not to have 1917 on the list if you’ve not already seen it. Went for They shall not grow old.
