The 'Burbs (1989) - Full Reaction

This was so silly! A fun and entertaining one for sure. I loved Ricky, especially just having seen him in The Lost Boys.  I wanted Tom to be nicer to Carrie but I think in the end he’s a changed man!

Hope you enjoy!

The director of this, Joe Dante, also directed Gremlins and Matinee (1993) starring John Goodman.

Jonathan Hintz

sorry, he's typecast forever after The Cowboys. Can't bring myself to like him still.

..and a very different Bruce Dern than his standard. 😁

The little white dog is the same dog in Silence of the lambs that belonged to Buffalo Bill

Some really underrated or forgotten movies that will go well with the next Remembrance Day Poll: "Paths of Glory" - Perhaps the definitive WW I movie which plays out with brilliant battlefield scenes and court room scenes. A Kubrick film so it's prone to genius, and Kirk Douglas gives the performance of his life (and yes, I've seen "Spartacus"). "The Outpost" - True story with Scott Eastwood, Orlando Bloom and Caleb Landry Jones. This one outdoes "Blackhawk Down" for the sheer chaos of battle and depicts amazing heroism under fire. Captures exceptionally well the quixotic landscape of Afghan tribal culture. The last hour plus is absolutely riveting and about as real as it gets. Bonus, some of the vets of the actual battle agreed to be in the film. "Sergeant York" - another true story and WW I movie with Gary Cooper's iconic performance. Kind of a flip-side to "Hacksaw Ridge" where the main character is a pacifist but takes another path. "Midway" - Rolland Emmerich makes perhaps the best movie of his career and a great WW II movie that captures all the essential details of this battle (as well as a few others leading up to it). Woody Harrelson and Ed Skrein absolutely kill their rolls. FWIW

The 'Burbs is one of my favourite '80s comedies. I know it's not the funniest or the scariest movie, but it holds a special place in my movie memory because it was the first movie my family rented when we bought our first VCR in 1989. It seemed a lot scarier back then! I didn't appreciate the quirkiness of the suburban setting as a kid, but I've met my share of crazy neighbours and the nosy gossips are far worse than the quiet ones who keep to themselves. The characters are my favourite aspect of The 'Burbs because they're low-key caricatures and funny but not too over-the-top, which makes them relatable. I also enjoyed how the movie walked the line between suspicion and uncertainty so you didn't know whether the characters were justified until the big reveal at the end. And Corey Feldman breaking the fourth wall at the end was perfect capper because I would also love living in that neighbourhood -- even though cul-de-sacs are weird!

What? To the duckduckgo machine! 3 hours? I know what I'm watching tomorrow. Thanks.

My Favorite Moment in the Reaction… Cassie, Carly and the Dog, while watching the Texas Chainsaw Massacre scene… all Three cock their heads to the side in almost perfect sync. I can imagine all 3 thinking the same thing, “What am I watching?” (Feel free to add your own captions, to what Shared Thought, Cassie, Carly and the Dog would have in that moment) So many great physical comedy bits and sight gags in this, like… Art unknowingly grabbing dog food to eat, and trying to play off like he didn’t. Art and Rumsfield acting like little kids, kicking and dragging their feet when Carol says Ray can’t come out and play. Ray was trying to mime “Call Me Later” and was peaking out the door at the bottom of the frame. Rumsfield biting the head of the Animal Cracker. (We all did it.) Ray’s feet sliding down the steps when coming out of the burning house. (My favorite) Art biting Ray’s bandaged finger in fight. I love the Soundtrack, composed by Jerry Goldsmith. I listen to it around Halloween every year. It creates a real Spooky Atmosphere. Goldsmith also pays homage to Spaghetti Western themes in his score throughout the ‘Burbs. One piece of music was taken directly from another film, My Name is Nobody (1973), composed by the Great Ennio Morricone (Jack Black voice inserted). It was used when Art and Ray were walking up to the House, and everyone’s face got zoomed in, which was right out of the old Spaghetti Westerns. Every time I traveled to see my cousins, there were three favorite movies of mine that they had on VHS and I had to watch them every time. The ‘Burbs (1989), Tremors (1990), and City Slickers (1991). Only one more to go on that list, Cassie. Lastly, there is such a thing as “Citizen’s Arrest.” Barney and Gomer will explain it. https://youtu.be/A1D78Y60gvo?si=kbpHcXOO32OLbtXP

I know. I’ve always wanted him to return to the kind of comedies he did in the 80s, like The Money Pit (1986), Big (1988) or The ‘Burbs (1989). He was such a great Physical Comedian. The way he slid down the steps coming out of the burning house always gets me.

Larry Darrell

Okay… Okay, Let’s give her a Cruise!! One of the Best Movie Dads. License to Drive is one of my favorites… and another Two Corey’s film, Dream a Little Dream (1989). It’s a unique kind of Teen Comedy/Drama, with an Amazing Soundtrack. Also, Meredith Salenger whom I crushed hard on as a kid.

Larry Darrell

His appearances on David Letterman's show are legendary.

Dave

I saw this movie in the theater when it came out so of course I would have recognized Gale Gordon. But I haven't seen this movie in 25 years or more so it was a complete surprise all over again to see him in this. And the Doctor, Henry Gibson, was an original cast member of NBC's Laugh In in the late '60's (with Goldie Hawn). Great to see them both in this.

Mike LL

That does make this reaction historic, does it not?

Mike LL

Bachelor Party. That's the classic Tom Hanks movie.

I just watched this with TBR Schmitt a couple weeks ago and like I said, I never get sick of this one, just one of those go-to movies that always makes me laugh. It's kind of like a comedic Twilight Zone episode and also sort of spoofs horror movies, but then it IS a horror movie because the twist is, they really were murderers all along. Super fun watch, so glad we didn't scare Carly off, yet lol, and little fun detail, when they all break into Walter's house, you can see there are at least two photos visible of Walter with Lucille Ball, those are real because the actor who played Walter was in Lucille Ball's show, not I Love Lucy but the one she starred in after divorcing Desi Arnaz, The Lucy Show, and then also on Here's Lucy. Oh, and the dog, Queenie, was also Precious in Silence Of The Lambs, was in a couple other movies too. The bit with axe still cracks me up, Joe Dante has a real touch for comedy, recommend Innerspace too, Martin Short is ALWAYS funny, and he doesn't disappoint in that one either.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

This is the Tom Hanks I grew up on and miss, I enjoy his more dramatic roles, it's just a shame he doesn't do as much comedy as he used to do.

HercEl

This was a favorite movie of my sister and I. To this day anytime she's trying to think of song lyrics I say, "Hum a little of it", then I start singing along, "I want to kill everyone. Satan is good. Satan is our pal" just to make her laugh. For some reason, I always found that line hilarious. Maybe it's the use of "pal".

Jesus F Christ

Yes, it was. Cassie can't handle tv static ever since the Poltergeist movie. And she got to see a scene from The Exorcist and Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Rick Williams

Great Movie. Great memories. The 80s were a good time. I knew they were guilty of something. Freak shows like that family had to be guilty. I was surprised to see Carly. She is always a nice addition. She should drop by and watch IT with you. 😈 Great Reaction Ladies. Come back soon Carly.

Rick Williams

Red rover, red rover, let Carlie come back over; for more reactions, soon.

Brian's Dog

Corey Feldman was 12 when he shot Friday 13th The Final Chapter it seems like he was in a lot of great movies in the 80's Tom Hanks was in low budget slasher flick called He Knows Your Alone. Which I thought was terrible. He was also in a TV show called Bosom Buddies in the early 80's.

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

Ahh Mercedes Lane! I didn’t realize it was Heather Graham until a rewatch once she became a bigger star after Swingers & Boogie Nights

Cole Jennett

Congratulations! You and Carly watched 3 seconds of the Exorcist! (The throw up scene on the tv before the dream sequence)

Goony71

Another Tom Hanks movie with a similar vibe is Dragnet (1987). Also, was that a Poltergeist flashback with the TV static?

Mike Lemon

I definitely plan on watching this reaction! Like I said once, I've never seen it, but I know who's in it! I'm at work currently, so when I get home, I'll watch it! Have a happy Friday Cassie, love and support always 🥰😁😉😇🙏👍🌹

Wesley White

There is another tom hanks movie with Shelley long called the money pit and it is one of my all time favorite comedies , you and Carly would absolutely love it

Wyatt Nuxoll

It’s been a while since I’ve seen it, would be great to give it another watch on here. Gremlins & The Goonies are a couple more movies Cassie needs to watch with him in.

Dean Holt

Awesome going to give this a watch tomorrow afternoon. As I’ve just watched the Memento reaction and my head hurts 😂 as it was a first time watch for me as well. Incredible film though but I’m definitely going to give it a rewatch. But getting back to The Burbs really glad Carly watch it with you and I’m hoping she liked it. Still lots of 80s movie you need to see and perhaps you could do an 80s comedy week.

Dean Holt

It is my all time favorite Tom Hanks movie! I absolutely love the humor. It is one of my go to comfort comedies that always brings a smile to my face. 😊

Shane Myers myers

Watching this tomorrow, soooo excited!!!! Wondering if Cassie recognized Hans, played by Courtney Gains. He was Kenneth in Can’t Buy Me Love (1987) and Sheriff Wade in Sweet Home Alabama (2002).

Larry Darrell

(TMI maybe) This is the movie that I developed a teen crush on Carrie Fisher. It wasn’t the outfit in SW like so many of my peers, but the lovely sun dress in this movie. She looks great in this one. And I completely forgot Tom Hanks started his career in comedy! Watching this one tonight!

Ike

I’m really looking forward to watching along with this. I’m going to head over to Popcorn Requests to put in for my most beloved Corey (Ricky) comedy - License To Drive. If anyone else remembers that fondly please do the same.

Alex Ch

Loved the perpetual smile on Cassie’s face throughout the film. It’s that kinda movie. Rarely “laugh out loud” funny, but it leaves you smiling throughout. Other “must see” movies directed by Joe Dante are Piranha, The Howling and Matinee. I believe Cassie’s already seen Gremlins. Dante was superb when it came to satire, which comes in a heavy dose in this film. He is also one of the world’s foremost movie trailer enthusiasts and started his own website dedicated to them about twenty years ago, called Trailers From Hell. I highly recommend it. PS: Favorite line “I’ve never seen that. I’ve never seen anybody drive their garbage down to the street and bang the Hell out of it with a stick. I’ve never seen that.” PPS: The lead garbage man, who thought cul-de-sacs are creepy, was played by legendary character actor Dick Miller. Miller was a mainstay of the Roger Corman movie factory of the 60s thru the 80s, which is also where director Joe Dante got his start (and how he and Miller met).

Just Plain Bob

Classic!

If you are itching for more Brother Theodore (the Doctor's brother), and who isn't?, he was also in The Last Unicorn (1982).

Mike Lemon

This movie scared me when I was a kiddo I saw it in the theater

Robbie

Easily in my top 3 favorite Tom Hanks movies!

David Crabtree

It's happening! i wanted this reaction for so long!

Brian's Dog

Art is the perfect schleppy friend here lol

Mike Stevenson

Yass! More Tom Hanks the better and this is the perfect scary but not too scary movie for you and Carly! 😁
