Hook (1991) - Full Reaction

Oh Robin, I miss you!! I forgot how special this movie is. This was a childhood favorite growing up and I haven't seen it for many many years. It was so fun to revisit and show this to Kaiielle (check out her channel!) for the first time. Nostalgia is one heck of a drug! Hope you enjoy :)

Hook (1991) - Full Reaction

Comments

Neverland in HOOK looks very much like an 80s McDonald’s commercial.

Jason Chirevas

When is the YT edit of this coming out?

Mark Schamber

Ah, a fellow Incubus fan I see! Well, then I'll DEFINATELY check her channel out!

YodatheHobbit

I already loved Robin before this, and Doubtfire was one of my favorites (Dead Poets Society, Good Will Hunting, or Aladdin) takes top RW billing for me. I can't believe that I actually broke down in tears and Kleenex more than you two did. As a dad who worked way too many stupidly long nights and missed so much, wow...I hope my kids see me today reaching from the yardarm to save them .I'm behind them 100%, hoping that they'll always know that.

Mike H

I've watched All the Presidents Men like 20 times. Added to the AFI Top 100 in 2007.

Clay F

Oh Hoffman has a lot of bangers. Lenny, Tootsie, Marathon Man, Outbreak, Wag the Dog, Star Wars. The list just goes on and on.

Jason Dolan

Yeah, there’s definitely more that could be added to that list.

Larry Darrell

I’m not saying you’re wrong

Jason Dolan

She might enjoy Tootsie more than any of those. Just saying.

Mike LL

So funny because I didn’t like it as a teenager and appreciate it so much more now.

Jason Dolan

Four Dustin Hoffman movies everyone should see All the Presidents Men The Graduate Midnight Cowboy Kramer vs Kramer

Jason Dolan

Omg you're right! I can't believe I didn't put that together, thanks!

3dbadboy1

Sounds like you might not have been able to enjoy the Feast? If you can’t Imagine you’re in Never Never Land, you won’t be in Never Never Land. ;-)

Larry Darrell

I think it might have just been that there were instances where the talking was going on a bit longer than it needed to and it started to obscure important dialogue. That's just what it seemed like happened more than once... to me anyway. I totally get the importance of needing to talk during a reaction, but I also realize It's tricky because you have to just give a couple quick little spurts of commentary in what seems like a "safe spot" in the film and not do longer speeches because then you're missing big relevant passages of the movie that you're reacting to. Not an easy balance to strike.

Stick Figure Studios

The Close cameo is really strange.

Stick Figure Studios

I actually like the movie, but it's unfortunately not very good (especially given the immense talent and pedigree of those involved in it's making). I mean, it's not terrible and it has a number of really strong elements, but they clash rather uncomfortably with a lot of very poor elements.

Stick Figure Studios

I probably wouldn't have minded as much either if I'd felt like Neverland was a real place and not an elaborate overlit set.

Stick Figure Studios

You are correct.

Stick Figure Studios

The 2003 PETER PAN is a marvelous film, I dare say the best movie version of that story.. and I love POPEYE too. I grew up watching it.

Stick Figure Studios

This movie didn’t age well for me. Watched it a bunch as a kid and loved it. This is my first time watching it as an adult and wow I really don’t like it as much. Fun reaction nonetheless.

Alex Gorell

I didn’t mind spending a little extra time in Never Never Land. ;-)

Larry Darrell

Thank you two for the reaction! I've never really liked this movie, even as a kid. I always felt it missed the mark for what is a incredibly cool idea. Dustin Hoffman is great though. And who doesn't love Robin Williams. I really love the live action Peter Pan from 2003, a much more traditional version though. Personally, Robin Williams has played one of the best animation to live action characters in Popeye - I love that movie.

Walter

Regarding the question is this the live action version of Pan, I would say it is more a sequel to Pan. It is more like what The Color of Money is to The Hustler or what Top Gun Maverick is to Top Gun. At least that is how I always viewed it.

Jason Dolan

Yeah, it's definitely too long. He wouldn't have had to even cut any scenes, just tightened up a few that went on for longer than they needed to (like the lost boys chasing Peter, Peter learns to fly, the climactic battle, etc).

Stick Figure Studios

Cassie needs to watch THE BEST OF TIMES with Robin Williams and Kurt Russell. Super underrated.

Jason Dolan

Ok, I'm glad I was the only one that got unexpectedly emotional watching this. & that beginning speech he gave about Wendy hit SO MUCH harder than I ever realized watching this as a kid.

Snapjaw

And did you notice Perconte from Band of Brothers is one of the Lost Boys

SeanATX

This will blow your mind btw. The pirate who 'didn't believe' in Capt. Hook with the beard was none other than Glenn Close. Also, the police inspector was played by Phil Collins.

3dbadboy1

Such a fun movie for us 90's kids. Spielberg probably should have cut out about 20-30 minutes, but the premise, production design and of course the score are phenomenal.

SeanATX

Thank you for watching and loving the reaction! To be honest, I'm worried that we didn't talk enough actually. Clearing copyright checks could be tough and having more commentary helps with that. 😊

kaiielle

The most magic? The 'GLOW' that came off these two young ladies faces and the 'TEARS of JOY' that filled their eyes! This is a truly magical reaction!

Terry Yelmene

I loved the reaction, but honestly too much talking from the new girl. Just my honest opinion. 🤷‍♂️

Aj R

Spielberg unknowingly foreshadows a lot of his future projects in his own movies. E.T. features a scene where the mom is reading "Peter Pan" to Drew Barrymore. In MINORITY REPORT, the movie opens up with someone cutting eye holes in a mask of Abraham Lincoln and reciting the Gettysburg address and, as you point out, T-Rex gets a mention in this one when JURASSIC PARK would be his next movie.

Stick Figure Studios

Cassie also saw him in ENEMY AT THE GATES.

Stick Figure Studios

I picked this up on 4K blu-ray when you announced this reaction and WOW is it ever GORGEOUS in 4K. That HDR really pops.

djKENTO

Unfortunately, though he was certainly trying to have fun, Spielberg did not enjoy making this movie. Roberts was difficult to work with and although Spielberg normally does great with kids, he had a lot of trouble with this rowdy group of boys (he was quoted as saying, "I hope they all grow up to be movie directors who make movies starring only little boys."). Spielberg later said, "I didn't have confidence in the script. I had confidence in the first act and I had confidence in the epilogue. I didn't have confidence in the body of it" and I personally think it shows in the final product. Spielberg recently tried to watch the movie again and couldn't finish it, though he admitted that was mostly because of sadness about Robin Williams.

Stick Figure Studios

This movie has the wildest cameos. The police detective is musician Phil Collins, one of the pirates is David Crosby of Crosby Stills & Nash, the pirate who steals shoes is Jimmy Buffet (RIP), and our princess Carrie Fisher is a woman kissing on a bridge… and lastly actress Glenn Close plays the pirate put in the Boo Box. Spielberg was having THE MOST fun making this movie. And i LOVE the line where Jack says how much he’d love for the T-Rex to come back and then Spielberg makes Jurassic Park.

djKENTO

I actually like ALWAYS (though I admit it's one of his lesser efforts), but yeah, 1941 is not good.

Stick Figure Studios

His two big stinkers for me were Always (1989) and 1941 (1979). Those served as a reality check for him.

Zane From Canada

Last time I watched it in fact. Hilarious that it only took 30 years for me to realize. 🤷‍♀️

Nicole

'toe' not 'tow' - It comes from running.

Mike Lemon

Such a bizarre cameo.

Stick Figure Studios

Spielberg wasn't going through a divorce at the time of HOOK's production in early '91 (he had been divorced from Amy Irving since 1989 and was already with Kate Capshaw by this point... in fact, he married Kate later that same year), but Roberts was in the process of breaking up with her fiance Keifer Sutherland at the time and it probably affected her behavior on set which was apparently problematic.

Stick Figure Studios

Despite being a massive Spielberg fan (he is, after all, my favorite filmmaker), I've always considered this to be one of his misfires. I do like the film and it's not terrible (indeed I can think of only one movie he's directed that I would call outright bad), but it is a bit of a mess with some wonderful elements right alongside some truly clumsy and embarrassing ones. Still, it does possess a certain amount of nostalgic value (especially now in a time when Robin Williams is no longer with us... certain lines carry with them more emotional weight, particularly that closing one) and I'm always in favor of more Spielberg on the channel, so I am looking forward to this reaction.

Stick Figure Studios

Watching this Memento/Hook double collab, what surprised me the most is that Hook affected Kaiielle more than Memento affected Cassie. I could not have forseen that. Watching this movie through their eyes made me appreciate this movie more after all these years. It was much underappreciated when it came out.

NICE!!! I hope your friend really enjoyed this movie! I miss Robin Williams too, it still hurts to this day😭 Like you, this too was also a childhood favorite of mine growing up, I've seen it so many times that (like many other movies I love) I have it memorized word for word lol😁 This movie is number 8 in my top 10 favorite movies of all time! I know what you mean by "Nostolgia is one heck of a drug" lol! My best friend and I, if you were to see us perform some scenes, we make the perfect dynamic of Captain Hook and Mister Smee in both this movie and Disney's PETER PAN lol! I'll definitely give this a watch at some point, but for now I'm still in the Halloween spirit, I'm still watching scary movies up until Halloween night lol! Later I'll be watching your full-lengths of TREMORS and SLEEPY HOLLOW from last year tonight, those were great lol! Have a good Thursday Cassie, see you hopefully at the next reaction premeire on YT! Love and support always [virtual hug] God bless you, Carly and your family🥰😁😉😇🙏👍🌹

Wesley White

Sending you hugs Naddlez! 🫂

kaiielle

I said Smee was from the 90s Super Mario Brothers movie haha but Who framed Roger Rabbit is a way better example.

Anthony

If you didnt already know, the "Man" they put in the boo box is actually Glenn Close.

Aj R

Smee, Bob Hoskins, was in the Super Mario Brothers movie from the 90s. That might be what you remember him from.

Anthony

Love this movie. One of my favorites from when I was a kid and one of my favorite Robin Williams movies alonside Jumanji, Mrs. Doubtfire, Good Morning Vietnam, Aladdin and Fern Gully. Smee is Bob Hoskins who you'll recognize from Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Phil Collins was the police Inspector. And Glenn Close was Gutless. The pirate who got locked in the Boo Box.

Eric

Just finished this, and revisiting this with you Basterds had me crying at least 5 times, and by the end (the review) Kaiielle had me s o b b i n g (still streaming tears typing this)..... And don't get me started on that Cassie hug...eugh....thanks guys...I guess <3

Diiirk706

This was one of my favorite childhood movies!! My sister and I used to play the Sega Genesis game (cartridge game console, I know I'm old lol) Bangarang!!

Riley

Fun fact. When Tink takes Peter to Neverland, the couple that floats beside the light pole is George Lucas and Carrie Fisher.

Blake Evans

One of Robin Williams best. I do miss that man.

Jack Ryan

The detective that showed up at the house after the kids disappeared was played by Phil Collins.

Tim Raths

I saw this at the Movie Theater when I was a kid. I loved it and it has been a favorite ever since.

Jens Kristensen

Just hold that happy thought Peter! A childhood favorite this one is…but didn’t realize how much star power it had until I got older; anyone spot Glenn Close?

JL_83

Bangarang!

Bryan Erickson

The film mostly suffers from the fact he was going through a nasty divorce at the time. Julia Roberts took the brunt of his misplaced frustration.

aarswft

I think Spielberg is one of the greatest directors of all time because he's constantly exploring, creating, and stepping outside his comfort zone(s) as a filmmaker. And for almost 50 years, with the exception of a couple films, he towed the line of making good, fun, entertaining movies and masterpiece films. Hook falls into the former category, in my opinion. Not his best, but fun. I feel like Spielberg did this movie for his children.

Zane From Canada

It’s Snowing!!! (Door Slam) Cracks me up every time. As someone who had a Father who worked nights my whole childhood, and missed a lot, this always hit right at home. Tears are pouring by the end. Thank You Cassie, for this.

Larry Darrell

I watched the heck out of this one as a kid. I’m surprised a younger Cassie was able to make it through the creepy “kidnapping” scene. Can’t wait to watch it later. Ru-fi-OOO!

Alex Villarreal

I'm holding off till I can sit down and watch with my kids,I've loved this movie since I was a kid,TY Cassie & Kaiielle💜

Celeste McAllister

Y’all need to do more collabs. If Memento was any indication, you make an excellent duo. But here’s what everyone’s gonna really be clamoring for - a Cassie, Carly, Kaiielle festival of fun. Each picks a movie the others haven’t seen and you do a triple header. Please make it happen ladies!

Just Plain Bob

👋😁

kaiielle

Had no idea who Kaiielle even was, loooooool

Diiirk706

Hook is a lot of fun.

Nathan Swapp

Thank you SO much for showing me this movie! This was indeed very special. 💜 As a heads up folks, I accidentally left background music playing that begins when the movie timer hits 1:48:59 and it lasts for a few mins. So sorry for the minor disruption!

kaiielle

Sorry to admit that I’ve never see this in its entirety so I’m looking forward to watching it for the first time as well!
