Scream (1996) - Full Reaction

This was tougher than I thought it would be after stuff like Halloween, The Thing, Nightmare etc! I think the absence of super natural elements scared me more. You'll see I was so squeamish and pained ha! This just felt real and true crime-esque which made it so creepy. Hope you enjoy!

Just finished rewatching this reaction. I can't believe it's been a year and Cassie still hasn't watched any more Scream movies. I really want to watch Scream 2 right now, but if I do if feels like I'm giving up on Cassie ever finishing the franchise. Heavy sigh!

I just rewatched your reaction to Scream with my daughter, a big fan of yours, and I realized that how you reacted to how the kids joked about the murders was how Sidney reacted. It’s always great to watch with you.

Such a beautiful area. I remember my babysitter telling me about this weird movie that was filming at her family's house with the 'cast of Party of 5'. Lol. Immediately became one of my all time favorites after it was released. Been to that video store in Santa Rosa. Really sucks that they never returned to any of those locations for the sequels.

Excited to finally see this in it's entirety. I enjoyed this one way too much on YouTube. Sorry. Wish you liked the scary stuff more...so many classics left to see. I guess there's always October. Though in some North American cultures springtime is indeed known as Verray Scarray May. Cultural appropriation is cool sometimes.

Cassie to answer your question about “Safety on a gun”, it’s a safety mechanism (hence the name safety) that prevents a gun from firing. Some guns have them some don’t (some types of guns don’t ever have them like Glocks and most other guns have models without them as some people don’t like them), and there are a few different types of safety. A lot of older guns (and some current ones) have it built inside or near the trigger guard (round bit that surround the trigger to prevent it from firing if the trigger would bump something without it), some have it built into the grip, the most common is a lever or switch on the side of the gun usually in a spot where you could move it with your thumb. Hope this info helps

For me Matthew Lillard (Stu) made the movie. He's such a great actor. And he made it funnier than it could have been. Most people today know him as the voice of "shaggy" in the Scooby Doo. But he's actually a good dude.

Agreed.
I felt bad for Cassie when she was saying "...this is so messed up..." and then when she was saying "You two are going to the jail for the rest of your freaking lives!" and thinking "Ooooh... no..." while being reminded of how Stu and Billy died and thinking "Oh, poor Cassie...pleeeease don't do the rest of them to yourself."

I can't believe this came out in 1996! I was 9 but clearly remember the marketing when it was released, and though I didn't see in theaters, it wasn't too much later that I did watch it.

It was hard watching CAssie's reaction to this. While I love Scream and appreciate it for its nod to the horror genre, Cassie is way to empathetic to not be disturbed by what is happening. I give her props for not turning it off after the first scene. The first time through this is hard, since it is a movie that doesn't pull any punches, humor aside.

So was I; she said she would never watch The Thing, but she did. And yes, she was scared, but that's why they are called "horror movies." They are scary. And I see her getting braver all the time. She wouldn't have made it through half of these movies when she first started this.

Agree. Cassie puts herself into the situation in the movie. She sees it as if it was real. That's good and bad. Good way to really watch some movies. But, also a bad way to watch some movies.

I must have watched a different reaction. Cassie had a hard time with this movie. I though she would handle it better. But, takes it very seriously. And that is what makes it so hard on her. She shouldn't get into the hardcore horror movies. She is fine without going any deeper. I was surprised she decided to watch IT.

I was surprised this found its way onto the watch list and the reaction was lived up to expectations, although part of me wanted you to enjoy this movie a little more. It definitely doesn’t intend on taking itself very seriously. It’s a parody within a slasher movie.

This was a movie I've never seen and originally didn't have an intention to watch, but seeing all the redacted talk about the reaction on Discord made me curious and I gave it a chance.
Slasher movies are not my cup of tea, because I find them either poorly executed, clichéd and tedious, or too realistic and disturbing. I was tempted to give up on this movie after the first scene with Drew Barrymore, which was quite horrifying and felt way too real for me. But the rest of the movie felt mostly just a bunch of clichés and stereotypes. I did not realize it was intentional and it was supposed to be a satire of the horror genre until I read some of the comments later. I think this movie is mainly only enjoyable for hardcore horror fans who appreciate all the references to other slasher films and pick up on the meta satire layer. For me, there was almost nothing appealing about it. The only positive thing I can say is that they surprised me with the twist about the identity of the killers.
As for the reaction, not even that could salvage the movie for me. I didn't find anything entertaining seeing Cassie scared and in distress in the Popcorn screaming room for almost two hours. I hope she will have a better time with THE LOST BOYS and THE BURBS, and I think she will relate to and actually enjoy some parts of those movies. I'm excited to see her reactions to those. Based on the little I know about IT, it has always been a big no-no for me. So, unless Cassie says she enjoyed IT at least a little, I will probably pass on that one.

I LOVED THIS REACTION! Great job! I had so much fun and got to live through your reaction. I felt like I was watching it for the first time all over again. I live where this movie was filmed and I worked at the video store from the movie and it’s become our “Local Hometown Horror” film… but it had it’s controversies.
Some backstory for how this movie’s release felt at the time. in 1993 a local girl, Polly Klaas had been murdered. It was a huge nation wide story that resulted in the “three strikes law”.
2 years later and Wes Craven, the director wants to shoot a small horror film in our county. Sonoma County, and Santa Rosa in particular have been featured in a bunch of movies and Alfred Hitchcock loved it here. The cities and county said yes.
Then some parent groups protested and were upset that a horror movie would be shot here so soon after a real nationally known murder. They had permission to shoot at the local high school, but then the high school changed it’s mind, costing the production money and time. There’s literally a non-thank you in the end credits to Santa Rosa High School. "No thanks whatsoever to the Santa Rosa City School District Governing Board."
When you’re young and all this stuff is going on you might pick up bits and pieces of the story but large chunks get twisted around, and the truth goes through a game of telephone. It went from “parents are mad that they’re filming a movie about murder after a murder” to “They’re making a movie about a real serial killer that lived in our town!”
There’s no real internet, not the way we think of it now. There’s no fact checking. We couldn’t really bring it up to our parents cuz we wanna see the movie!
So in December of 1996, just a few days before Christmas, a few of my friends and I buy tickets to Mars Attacks, a movie that came out a week prior. We plan for a showing that lines up well, play in the arcade for 15-20 minutes and sneak our way into a crowded dark theater, the trailers starting. We’re all 12 or 13 years old.
I’ve never been so scared in my entire life. The fear of getting caught, coupled with the idea that this was real, took place where we lived and was filmed here… it was exciting. It definitely changed me for ever.
we didn’t get the references and hadn’t seen ANY of the movies they were talking about so the comedy/satire aspects of it were lost on us, but the fear? THE FEAR WAS EVERYTHING.

I have been waiting for a long time for you to react to this movie. It is one of my favorites. I thought after all the movies you had watched, they might have prepared you for Scream. But seeing how you reacted to the first scene, I think it would have been better if you had skipped this one. I appreciate you pushing through to the end but your peace of mind is more important than my entertainment. I hope your next movie choice doesn't impact you the way this one did. I am thankful for all your great content.

I can’t get over how many comments on here are telling her how she should have reacted to this movie. Like, she reacts how she reacts. She’s always put herself in the character’s shoes, it’s what makes her great. It’s baffling to me that anyone expected otherwise.

Wow. Yeah, I think the stalker with the phone calls probably goes a long way to explaining your reaction. I’m sorry that happened to you. I was going to recommend Black Christmas as a possible reaction in the future but, knowing about your stalker experience I would STRONGLY recommend against it. I actually did some babysitting in high school but I have also watched a LOT of horror movies. There are so many meta moments and so many inside jokes in this movie that it was hard for me to be frightened. Oh, I jumped at the jump scares. But it wasn’t the kind of thing that stuck with me.

i just literally pictured myself babysitting or home alone and getting stabbed to death. Did you guys not put yourself in that position? i think it depends what you’re scared of. as a kid my fears were robbers, kidnappers, murderers. I had a horrible stalker experience in college with phone calls like this so maybe that’s why it hit so hard

Honestly I'm about like you. I give up on her watching a lot of my favorite horror movies. She'll never watch the 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, any exorcism/possession type, or any movie involving kids, which are some of the best. IF you see this Cassie or Ben, rethink IT. There are a few non horror flicks I'm still waiting to get her reaction from- namely , The Devil's Advocate, What Lies Beneath, Deep Blue Sea, Mortal Kombat(1995), Ninja Turtles(1990), Ninja Turtles 2(1991), and Volcano. I know she'll never go near The American Pie series which I don't get. Everyone has sex and was a horny teenager. It's how we procreate lol. Sex comes more natural and normal than any subject in a violent horror flick. FYI Cassie, your reaction to Steve Stifler would be pure gold.

No, the problem is thaat the people in this patreon don't want to hear the truth. The truth is, Cassie doesn't like watching movies like this, but people vote for them anyway, i guess because they think her reaction is funny.
I vote for movies that I think both her, and the viewer will like. That is also how i suggest movies to friends or aquaintances.
I don't just pick what i think will be the strongest reaction.
But people can't do that and then be surprised when she doesn't like it.
Its very frustrating to me watching this happen again and again. I fully expect people to disagree with me but thats okay, I'm right anyway.

I sort of agree. I mean the scene where they make fun of people who die in horror movies is a dead giveaway at the satirical theme this movie is giving off. I am not shocked that Cassie reacted the way she did to this film however. Its up to her to take a break and stop but until then its fine the way she reacts. Its a blind watch and if she went in knowing this was a film making fun of horror films in a satirical way, she may of reacted differently but im glad that wasnt spoiled. Hell even I got scared watching this for the first time several years ago not knowing anything about it until that scene came up where they make fun of people who die in horror movies, then it clicked lol

I mean, that decision has to come from her. But as long October is a theme month here, we’ll continue to suggest some of our favorites. Overall, I think people are quite considerate. Except for a few people who can’t get it through their skulls that she won’t watch The Exorcist, most people are suggesting fairly appropriate stuff IMO. Sometimes we get it wrong, I was honestly surprised that Scream affected her that much. But that’s life, it’s not much worse than that. I doubt she’ll have nightmares about Ghostface.

Comedy is not the only genre which should be taken lightly. SCREAM is not a comedy but it's still an exaggerated reality, meant to thrill and scare for 2 hours and then laugh about afterwards because the movie didn't take itself seriously. Watching it like it's a true crime doc would be like stopping an action movie midway in order to show the funerals and grieving families of all the nameless bad guys gunned down by the hero.
Patrick Flanagan
2023-10-21 19:09:46 +0000 UTC
You make it sound like a straight-up comedy. It's not. The ending in particular (with some effective acting by Matthew Lillard) is quite gruesome and - as our host pointed out - messed up.
You're probably right about it being completely fictional. It did however inspire a murder: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Cassie_Jo_Stoddart

Why do people kill? In a nutshell I think there are two main reasons. One, they get off on it, or, two they feel powerless. I think that's all it boils down to.
William Bryan
2023-10-21 17:38:38 +0000 UTC
Maybe our host should just give up on horror movies. The merits and the entertaining aspects of them seem completely lost on her. I've been a life-long horror fan and this movie is so clearly intended as a silly haunted house amusement park ride, with broadly drawn and completely sarcastic characters and a script which pokes fun at itself, that watching someone sit through it white-knuckled and queasy and taking it at face value like it's a true crime documentary is just depressing. I thought she did alright with THE THING but I'm honestly shocked that anyone could watch SCREAM and take it so seriously.
Also, people claiming this is based on a real-life serial killer aren't helping. This is completely made up. The writer watched a documentary about the Gainesville Ripper, felt afraid, and began writing a script inspired by that moment of fear, among other influences. There is, to my knowledge, no case of a guy (or two guys) dressing as a masked killer and exclusively stalking people they knew in real-life to get revenge. Ghostface is just a live-action Scooby-Doo villain.
Patrick Flanagan
2023-10-21 15:32:36 +0000 UTC
The mask was an actual Halloween mask that had been created about 5 years before the movie and licensed by the company Fun World. The producer of SCREAM discovered it while location shooting and brought it to Wes Craven's attention. Obviously the mask shot way up in popularity after the film's release.

OMG Cassie!!!! This was so so hilarious, I cannot stop laughing🤣🤣🤣 The way you kept getting so spooked and jumpy, literally every moment of this movie I just knew how you would react and jump out of your skin, I'm sorry but I get such a guilty pleasure of this, I'm sorry Cassie lol🤣🤣🤣 Don't worry, I'm not offended that you didn't like this movie much, I mean I myself am not much of a fan of this franchise either, but I can't help but get and I quote W.B. Yeats "a lonely impulse of delight!" Not for the killing and the gore, but for the scare factor, and considering this was directed by horror master Wes Craven (A Nightmare on Elm Street) I can't help but find some entertainment in this movie! Let alone this movie in my opinion either pays homage or pokes fun at the typical horror/slasher movie cliche's! Believe it or not, it was actually this movie that made me a fan of actress Neve Campbell (Sidney) gosh did I have a crush on her lol! I was really impressed that you recognized certain actors in this, especially Matthew Lillard (Stu)! Yeah, like you, I've seen him in a lot of movies during my high school years as well, but I think you might know him better as the current Shaggy Rodgers in the first live-action Scooby Doo movie, yup that's him alright lol! I could be wrong about this, but I think it was this movie when David Arquette (Dewey) and Courteney Cox (Gale) first met and hooked up! And to help clarify Dewey did survive in this, didn't you see him carried off on a stretcher into an ambulance at the end? He survived to return in the sequels, now to be honest I've only seen 1-4 of this franchise, haven't seen 5 or 6, yes there are 6 movies in total! Fun fact, though I'm sure a lot of people have already said it on here, the janitor you see in the hall way of the school wearing the Freddy sweater and hat, that was director Wes Craven himself, just a little cameo of him either paying homage or poking fun at himself from A Nightmare on Elm Street, ironically the janitor's name was Fred, HA! If I'm not mistaken, it was actually this movie that revitalized the "Slasher" genre in horror movies since in the 80's, many of the sequels of both the FRIDAY THE 13TH and A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET franchises, were becoming increasingly more cheesy than scary and it's villains were not being taken more seriously, so in a way, this movie was a return to Wes Craven's roots in the "Slasher" genre! Sorry to say Cassie, but the look on your face at the end when the plot twist showing who the killers were this whole time, that was just priceless! I admit myself, though I'm not much of a fan of this franchise, the Ghost Face killer has cemented himself as an icon of horror movie history next to that of Freddy Krueger, Jason Vorhees, Michael Myers, etc. Anyway, I'm really sorry that this movie practically traumatized you, but don't let it get you down and lose the Halloween spirit, may I highly recommend you react to, even though you might not fit it in your schedule, a more light hearted classic horror/comedy, ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN, that movie will help lighten your spirits, pun intended lol! Still, I really enjoyed this reaction and seeing you get scared, sorry lol🤣 You're still the best, love and support always, [BIG virtual hug] it's okay, it's just a movie! God bless you, Carly, and your family, and as always [snaps fingers & winks] stay classy Cassie🥰😁😉😇🙏👍🌹

That was as good as I remember. I find it more fun and campy than thrilling, and i think it waas meant to be. It's almost hard to see it as a genuine film. It's just so unabashedly in your face meta. That 3rd act still works pretty well. Now Cassie should watch scary movie lol

It's not a bad movie, but I'm not a big fan of this one. Outside of the fact they killed my girl in the first scene, I consider Scream to be way too far over the top to create any real tension or fear. It always felt more like a comedy to me. I guess for some folks that's not the case. One thing, though, I can't deny, in today's day and age, the premise is completely reasonable, even if the dialog is about as campy as a slasher movie could get. Too me it always felt like a weird episode of Scooby Doo. Great reaction, though.
On a related note, after watching this reaction. I'm more convinced than ever she'll do fine with The Fly. The premise of it is way too far fetched.
Cassie, maybe you should sub in "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" for a great palette cleansing finale to end the month? A genuinely fun movie that stops well short of being too scary.

I am not into horror movies. Most horror movies I have seen have been through watching Cassie's reactions. While I have respect for the genre, horror movies don't do much for me.
My favorite is The Shining, which has an artistic sense to me with the music/sound, imagery, anticipation, Nicholson acting, etc. I also liked Zombieland. Honorable mention is Tucker/Dale.
As for Scream, the clever satire (which I appreciated) was not enough to salvage the movie for me. Though I do know the movie is creative and was groundbreaking.

I appreciate the clever plot twists but yeah this one is rough. I watched it when it first came out and I watched the first sequel, and I never watched them again. Only watched this time because Cassie was watching. Not what I would gave chosen for her. Yeah, it's fun to share the fear but there's plenty of good scary/spooky films closer to her comfort range that she would actually enjoy. That would be a lot more satisfying. Neve Campbell and Skeet Ulrich are in an earlier film together called "The Craft" about four teen witches who get in over their heads with magick, that I think Cassie would really enjoy.

I think what makes Scream so good, is that it's all treated pretty realistically. Two teenagers are killed, and it really affects people. The school is offering counseling services, then it shuts down completely, and the whole town puts in the curfew. Kids emotionally removed the situation make coarse jokes about things, as they do, but by-and-large, the body count is low and the impact is high. It gets lost as the series goes on, to the point where people can watch their boyfriend/girlfriend die horribly in front of them, and then be fine making meta quips half an hour later, but in the first one, it's all taken pretty seriously.

That was a little traumatic. I know you didn’t enjoy that. And I didn’t really enjoy watching you suffer through it.
I hope you went and hugged your kids, kissed your husband, and watched a nice rom-com to cleanse the palette afterwards.
I’m not a big horror movie guy either. So I’ll be glad when October is over. I’m happy you enjoyed Practical Magic. And hopefully you’ll enjoy The Lost Boys.

This movie is definitely of it's time. I saw it in theater and thought it was great with all the scares and up and coming young hot teen heartthrobs. Going back again today, the actors all look early 30s, the dialogue is really kinda cringe and too meta. I get it's place as the start of a new genre, but IMO it does not hold up. Matthew Lillard is great though.

I don't think that Cassie is incapable of understating satire (I'm not saying she's not smart), just that I think it is ultimately irrelevant to her movie viewing experience. She immerses herself so completely in the story and the characters (it's one of the things that makes her such a great reactor) that any degree of meta-commentary going on, any extra layer of meaning/significance, is going to be of secondary importance to her. There's a certain amount of ironic detachment required for satire to really land and Cassie doesn't really do Ironic detachment.

I agree with Stick Figure Studios. This reaction has convinced me that Cassie is incapable of understanding satire because all she sees is plot plot plot. Wes Craven does everything imaginable to tell the audience, "YOU ARE WATCHING A MOVIE. THIS ISN'T REAL. WELCOME TO METACOMMENTARY." But Cassie is a brick wall. This was probably my least favorite Cassie reaction.

Sorry this one scared you so much Cassie. Like a lot of people I thought you'd watched enough horror to get through this one a bit easier although, I did expect the beginning of this movie to be rough on you. You probably need more time and horror movie experiences before you're ready for more movies like this. I do think you'll get there though. You've come really far already. My favorite part about this franchise is the characters and how compelling there personal struggles are. They grow so much as the franchise continues. That's why this is my favorite horror franchise. Everyone's already told you about Dewey and all the movie trivia so I'll recommend some "feel good" movies for November. *Nine Months. *Some Kind Of Wonderful. *Fools Rush In. *Tin Cup. *America's Sweethearts. *Pleasantville. *Now & Then Hope you have a peaceful night sleep. Watch something funny that you really like after a scary movie. It helps.

Cassie, your right so this was based partially off the story of the Gainesville Ripper. I saw the first showing of this the first day it came out. Anyway the first one was definitely the scariest one. The next five.... (Scream 7 comes out next year) are not that bad. All the major players are back. However Wes Craven set this up as a trilogy. If you think back to all the Trilogies Godfather, Jedi. It falls in line. I promise you Cassie the rest are not that scary. So the first one and all the sequels play on pop culture references. Patrick Dempsey from Grey's Anatomy was in the third one, and was a main character. You made it through this, the rest not as bad.

Dewy lived Cassie! He was the one being loaded into the ambulance. Also when you asked what a safety was on a gun. A safety is a little switch on the side of most firearms that prevents the trigger from being pulled and causing an accidental/negligent discharge.

Great reaction, I understand why you feel this movie is scarier than anything supernatural because serial killers do exist. Supernatural villains scare me the most, I'm running for the hills if I come across Michael, Jason, or a Xenomorph. As a man, I like my chances against any man or serial killer. If you have a little horror left in you you should check out other villains like Jason, Leatherface, and Chucky.

Scream was a clever homage to slasher movies like Friday the 13th and Halloween. Its tongue in cheek references to the tropes of these movies made it quite the hit movie in the 90s. You're also correct as there is a series called " scary movie" which is a direct parody of the scream movies. There was a spate of other "comedies" in the 90's which parodied popular movies. TBH they weren't really great either. becuase they pretty much depended on you watching the original movie to understand the references. It's okay. The quality doesn't really improve in the sequels, and it pretty much is the same as the first one. I get it, not your thing. It's cool. You don't have to go back to see the rest; you're not missing anything. At the time is was interesting to see Drew Barrymore as she was only really know for being a "wild child" and ET before and courteney cox who was obvously famous for friends but really only was notable appearances prior were in the Bruce Spingsteen video and he-man and the masters of the universe movie.

Thank you. I'm prepared, of course, to be attacked and called all sorts of names like "creepy" or a "white knight" who's "protecting" my "girlfriend" Cassie or whatnot, but I am not doing/saying that (I never was) and I have long since given up on trying to defend myself against those who really don't even understand the nuances of what it is I'm trying to articulate.
I just think Cassie should know it's okay if she wants to put the brakes a bit on some of these more extreme (for her) scary movies. Cassie is the type of personality that doesn't want to disappoint others and while there are certainly many patrons who would be disappointed in her not reacting to "the scariest movies" out there (because, again, they like watching he squirm), there are plenty of us who are fine with her reacting to movies that we don't find *as* scary or disturbing (but which we still think are good) if that's what she feels she needs to do. That's all.

"You need to have information before you can make a choice."
Absolutely 100% agree with you on that. What's infuriating is that there are some patrons who are not only withholding information but giving her disinformation in the hopes of trying to essentially trick her into watching harder movies. I got railed on by someone once for accurately describing what Stanley Kubrick's EYES WIDE SHUT was to Cassie because she thought it was just a feel-good Christmas movie with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. "Dude, now she'll never watch it," I was told. Well, sorry but not sorry for just being honest and wanting her to make an informed decision. For the record, I think it's a brilliant movie and I wouldn't tell her not to watch it, but she should at least know what it is before going into it or she's going to be horrified and miserable the whole time.

Stick Figure Studios
2023-10-20 20:46:18 +0000 UTC
Yeah, I'm not talking about being a "white knight" or "protecting" Cassie or some other macho bulls**t here (and I agree that that can be just as annoying as the "it's just a movie; it has no eeal significant effect on people at all" folks). I'm just talking about being a thoughtful patron who is understanding of who these women are, how they watch movies and take that into account when we make recommendations or vote in polls. At a certain point, it's just no longer fun (I mean, I don't believe that Cassie laughed or smiled once throughout this entire movie) and the fact that there are some who are actually eager to watch her suffer for our entertainment is just really disheartening (not that everyone who wants her to watch good scary movies -- even extremely strong ones -- does that, but I know many do).
Obviously, as so many have pointed out, Cassie is an adult and can do whatever she wants. I'm not telling her what to do. I'm just letting her know that there are those of us out here who support her decision if she decided to pull back a little bit on some of these movies with stronger, more extreme content. If there is one thing that we know from time spent on this channel, it's that Cassie listens to her patrons.
Stick Figure Studios
2023-10-20 20:24:16 +0000 UTC
I'm starting to wonder if (also considering her reaction to ROBOCOP) satire is a bit lost on Cassie... that to appreciate something satirical, one has to have a certain amount of detachment to the story/character-- since satire often uses those elements as tools to say something -- and Cassie is just so earnest and open in her acceptance of what she is being presented, that she reacts to characters as if they actually exist and events as if they're really happening (fully invested in them emotionally) and not just ideas representing something else. Spoofs (like YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN and TUCKER AND DALE) I think are more up her alley because they are more overt in their humor (they are more comedies than they are scary movies) while something like SCREAM plays it pretty straight. I am beginning to think now that she will not like CABIN IN THE WOODS at all.
Stick Figure Studios

I like your post.
With the way Cassie apparently experiences movies as real-like, the clever satire is not very relevant here -- doesn't make the movie enjoyable for her. I saw that in her reaction of Tucker/Dale (though I think she did chuckle at the "cut off his bowling fingers" line) and in her reaction, for example, of the early scene of Zombieland w/the fat people getting it.
The Scream franchise is likely ended.

Cassie Dewy lived. He was the one they were loading into the ambulance. The movie was a little rough on you. You didn't like that it was to easy to see this happening. Just regular people. Nothing supernatural. Good job making it through. This month is being a little to hard on you. Feel free to easy up and go with happier movies. Watch something fun. This was inspired by an actual serial killer in Florida. So the fear of this actual happening is accurate. Scream is my favorite scary movie. It's satire at its finest. I loved your reaction to this movie. It's a bit like mine when I first saw Scream. I really used to hate scary movies when I was younger, and Scream was the first horror movie I ever saw. I think I was like twelve and I secretly watched it :P But after learning more about the behind the scenes of horror movies, I started to enjoy them a lot more the last few years. Like the Conjuring movies and the spin offs. (Also definitely a scary but not too scary movie series. It doesn't have gore at all, just a lot of suspense)
the Scream series are one of my fave horror movie series now. They all have a sense of dark humor, often breaking the 4th wall. Like in this movie, with Jamie Kennedy keeps saying "Jamie, look behind you!" always has me laughing.
The whole house bit where music from the first Halloweed fits the situation makes me geek out a little. Of course, the murders are graphic and terrible and yes, the 2nd movie, 4th, 5th and 6th get more graphic. But do know that the actors behind the screens are having a great time with them. That kinda helps me enjoy these movies a little bit more. You should look up behind the screen videos about them, maybe a gag reel and you can see how much fun they all have.
Sidney Prescott is one of my favorite "final girls". She's so bad ass, even in the lesser Scream movies like Scream 3.
If you want scary but not too scary, and another bad ass Final Girl, you should totally watch "Ready or Not" with Samara Weaving, the niece of Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith from the Matrix). That movie has a very dark humor and is gorey too, but it still had me laughing a ton!
Thanks again for this reaction! I was real excited when you announced it. :D

I must confess to being a bit surprised at how much this movie upset you, Cassie. I mean, I always knew it was a good scary movie (from the master of them), but felt like the meta/self-aware/satirical elements made its horror a bit easier to take. Like when Randy (Jamie Kennedy) is watching HALLOWEEN and telling Jamie Lee Curtis to look behind her because the killer is right there while a killer is right behind him (his cries of "Jamie, turn around" having an extra layer of meaning because his own real name is Jamie), you were saying, "Thats not funny," and I'm thinking "That's hilarious and extremely clever."
I think it's easy to forget how desensitized many of us have become to these horrific images because of these kinds of movies (a theme this series actually explores) and you are just so earnest and big-hearted and open-minded and sensitive that while the rest of us with darker senses of humor are laughing and having fun at the scares and the carnage, you're squirming and freaking out and not enjoying yourself at all. I hope this month hasn't caused you too much stress and too many nightmares because despite what some people think about movies not affecting us in negative ways at all, I know that they do (yes, thet can even traumatize us) mentally, emotionally, spiritually, etc . As much as I advocate seeing as many great films as possible (of all genres), with some of these movies it might just not be worth it for you. I admire you being willing to go outside your comfort zone cinematically, but one can go too far outside if it and (as you said in THE THING outro) have these visuals stuck inside your head for the rest of your life. Not telling you what to do (you are an adult and able to make your own decisions), but please, don't feel pressured to "hurt" yourself for our benefit. It's not worth the views. If you need to bail on the rest of "not just scary, but too scary" October, feel free to do so. We'll still be here. :-)

Dewy survives. He's the one being carried off to the ambulance at the end. Also, yes that shirt the janitor was wearing is the original Freddy Kruger shirt from Nightmare on Elm Street. It sounded like you may have missed it. Dewey did live. He was the one being put in the abulance at the end there. Somehow he survived.
You were not seeing things in that scene with the janitor Fred. He was wearing the hat and sweater that Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street wore. Also fun fact: the janitor Fred was played by Wes Craven, the director of Scream and A Nightmare on Elmstreet. This is one of Wes Craven's best. He was a true master of the genre.

You're right, Cassie about how horror movies are more scary when the killer(s) are just human.
Scream pays homage to Psycho (1960) in that way. The "monster" is a man. Not a vampire, werewolf, mummy, insect, beast, or alien. Just a man. That's real horror.

Cassie, as a fan, I have to say that if you found Scream 1 as unpleasant as it seemed you did, you might want to just consider skipping the others.
They make an attempt to get darker, more twisted, more psychologically devious, and involve even more gratuitous forms of violence for the mere sake of doing so. However, there really are only so many ways movies can be made about psychopaths with creepy voices going around in ghostface costumes stalking and killing people.
Obviously, it's ultimately your decision, but there are plenty of other horror movies out there. The Scream movies are not the most interesting IMHO.

Also this was originally intended to be a straight up parody and it was originally called Scary Movie but they hired Wes Craven who created A Nightmare on Elm Street and he did such a good job they retitled it Scream and just released it as a straight up horror and then the Wayans brothers ended up doing an Airplane type parody actually called Scary Movie 🍿

Cassie, you asked if this was a satire or if someone made a satire of this, and the answer is YES, both! This is a satire of 80s horror films like Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, etc. And someone did make a satire/spoof of this called Scary Movie. There were five of them I think, but probably not your type of humor.

I was surprised you didn't at least like this one. It is a horror classic and one of the better written ones, IMO. Was surprised this scared you more than some other horror movies you've seen. This one didn't have that much gore...Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil had way more graphic deaths than this - although I guess the silly humor made it less real. There is humor in Scream but it is very "meta" humor and at the time it was very unique a horror movie was this self-aware.
I could tell you were not enjoying this when the Dewey and Gale romance scenes didn't elicit any type of reaction except fear. lol I think you already knew this but they would eventually get married in real life by Scream 3.
A couple of things you may have missed - Dewey survived at the end as he was conscious when they carted him to the ambulance. The Freddy Krueger janitor scene you caught was just a fun reference to Nightmare on Elm Street since Wes Craven also directed that movie. "Wes Carpenter" reference by Tatum is just a combination of Wes Craven and John Carpenter's names. John Carpenter directed the The Thing and Halloween. Billy "Loomis" is a refence to Halloween as the character who is trying to hunt down Michael Myers' name is Dr. Loomis.
Maybe you can give Scream 2 a chance in the future (next year?) knowing what to expect from these films. The rest of the franchise can be fun but the first 2 are the best, IMO.

Carly wouldn't have made it past Drew Barrymore's scenes. She would have been supportive by text from the living room. :)

Yeah. Scream 2 is good, but I wasn't impressed by the rest of them.

Saw this in the theater in 1996. My brother and I watched it with a mostly packed house, including a woman who will never win any Mother of the Year awards that brought her toddler into the theater with her. Poor kid lasted about 4 minutes. Thankfully she got the hint and they left.

Dewey lived. And yes, you need to learn what the safety is on a gun, just for the sake of your general knowledge so that if you ever do have to handle a firearm, you can do so safely. It's one of those things everyone should know, like how to change a tire.

One of the best slasher movies ever, hands down. Masterful, suspense, clever and funny. I can not even stress the importance of this movie and franchise to the slasher thriler horror genre. I really hope yoy watch the rest, as its essentially one big ongoing story.

Does that mean your not going to watch the rest of the Screams? The rest are very entertaining taking place in different places. I think you should watch them. Hopefully crossing my fingers 🤞

Surprised it shook you that much tbh. I know the fact that it's something fairly normal taking place, can freak you out even more, but I figured you've seen enough serial killers to be desensitized, and could even enjoy the whodunnit aspect. For what it's worth, Scream 2 is up there with this one, I go back and forth on which one I prefer. Maybe a year in-between would be enough.
Looking forward to IT if it's the 2017 version, and still holding out hope for 🪰

I doubt you will watch it, but Scream 2 is my favorite of the 3 Wes Craven directed. Maybe next year 🤣😂

A little interesting thing about Wes Craven. He is seen as one of the masters of horrors but his true passion was to always make romance films and romantic comedies. That’s why in all of his movies we get a similar romance to those types of films. May he rest in peace.

Few little tidbits of trivia for ya, even though movie trivia may scare you after this one haha.
This is from Wes Craven the creator of Nightmare on Elm Street, he cameos as Fred the janitor who is deliberately dressed like Freddy Krueger. He's also friends with John Carpenter of Halloween/The Thing, the Wes Carpenter reference in the movie is referring to them both. He directed the next 3 movies in the series but has sadly passed away, parts 5 and 6 just came out recently.
This movie was really fresh for its time as the other horror franchises had run out of steam and this one added the element of meta commentary and the characters knowing and referring to horror movie tropes.
Billy's last name is Loomis which is the same last name as the doctor in Halloween and a character in Psycho as well.

Another one you can check off your list, then shred the list, put it in a paper bag, and throw it into a roaring fire, lol. Glad you stuck this one out, and I'm sure November can't get here soon enough for you! You're the best!

I was really surprised by how strong Cassie’s reaction was to this movie. She’s seen much scarier. I saw Scream when it first came out in theaters and thought it was the first decent slasher in a decade, with the exception of Candyman. I also loved all the inside references to older slashers such as Psycho (the name Loomis, which also made an appearance in Halloween, and the death of the presumed protagonist), the references to Craven’s masterpiece A Nightmare On Elm Street, etc. Great movie, fun reaction. SPOILER ALERT: One final note that may cheer Cassie up. Dewey survived. If you watch the closing scene again you can see him give a thumbs up as they load him into the ambulance. They originally planned to kill him but the character proved so popular with test audiences that they shot the additional scene with him and the ambulance.

I don't like slasher movies in general. They tend to be - in my opinion - poorly written, poorly acted. Even the "great" ones in the genre are pretty bad. This is better than your average slasher, but the sequels get increasingly worse. Not my genre, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

You see how Drew Barrymore is up front and the biggest actor on the poster you used? That’s how all the marketing was leading up to the movie. It made you think she was the lead… Most shocking opening of a movie I’d seen when it came out. I was like “you can’t do that!”
So this series gets sillier and sillier as it goes on, becoming more and more unbelievably and crazy but in a way that is more fun that this one was.

vividly remember this being in theaters; didn’t go see it cause I wasn’t big on horror, but people just kept talking about it, especially one major death scene that came as a big surprise to all (won’t spoil here, I’m assuming everyone knows which one) so finally rented it (back in the days of VHS), and became a fan

Watched the reaction. My first time to see the movie.
The way Cassie apparently experiences movies as real-like, the clever satire is not very relevant here -- doesn't make the movie enjoyable for her. I saw that in her reaction of Tucker/Dale (though I think she did chuckle at the "cut off his bowling fingers" line) and in her reaction, for example, of the early scene of Zombieland w/the fat people getting it.
The Scream franchise is likely ended.

And Linda Blair (the girl from The Exorcist) was the news reporter who asked Sidney, "How does it feel to be almost brutally butchered?" at the school.

Oh I know I'm going to enjoy this! Though I'm not exactly the biggest fan of this franchise, I'll watch it if it's put in front of me lol! Can't wait to watch you jump out of your skin and get spooked, however it's 3 am right now for me, and I'm tired! Big day at work ahead of me, but I promise after work, I'll watch it and give you my commentary afterwards! Oh boy this is going to be a doozy lol! Have a Happy Friday, love and support, and God bless🥰😁😉😇🙏👍🌹

I'm sorry but I laughed through the whole reaction at how scared you were! Thank you for your service :-) I think you missed that Dewey actually survived, and was put in an ambulance at the end. The janitor dressed as Freddy Krueger was an in-joke - Wes Craven, the director of the movie, also directed the first Nightmare on Elm street. Remember Drew Barrymore at the start said the first Nightmare on Elm street was scary but the rest sucked? Also, "Wes Carpenter " was another in-joke - Wes Craven directed Scream/Elm street and John Carpenter directed Halloween, The Thing etc. Drew Barrymore knew she would die first in the movie - the director wanted the audience to think she would be the star of the movie and then shock them with her death, letting them know that none of the characters are safe (his inspiration was Janet Leigh's early death in the shower in Psycho). Give yourself a year to recover and I highly recommend watching Scream 2 next year! It really is one of the all time best horror franchises.

My then 16-y-o son took me as a birthday present. Mid 40s and never a horror/slasher fan. I loved it!!! Clever, often funny...and D.B. gets it in the first 10 minutes!! Wha????? The father-son dynamic helped with the blood factor, which was so over the top it was a.bit of comedic relief as well. Maybe some day you can see it with one of your, much older kids.

I remember seeing "Scream" for the first time back in the 90s. We did rent it on VHS. My parents had just split up and I saw this movie first time I meet my stepbrother . Pretty damn awkward! But my mom made us fish and chips to eat during the movie. Great memories.
Next horror idea:
"The Burning" (1980)

I watched this movie maybe 2 years ago for the first time, despite being of age when it originally came out. The 90s-00s teen slasher movies just didn’t interest me at the time. I kinda thought the genre of was stupid pointless money machine.
But having watched most of the Scream movies now I have to say I think they’re a lot of fun and one of the better Franchise horrors.
I look forward to your reaction, it’s a shame Carly wasn’t present because I think you both would have been supportive for each other!
