[YT Edit] The Revenant (2015)

Hey guys! Here is the YT edit for The Revenant, which will premiere this evening. Hope you enjoy!

Here is the full reaction to this movie.

Hmmm... interesting opinions here. My perspective though is that it is kinda strange to give anything more than a nomination to a film where one person is by themself for ages without much emotional range. I think an oscar worthy film needs to have a more complex plot with more emotional interactions between people or if there is only one person for most of the time it needs to go deep into mental illness so that at least the story can have more happening.

Thoko

Too violent, I couldn't watch it. Kudos to you

Fuzrok

I’ll second that, a few suggestions RocknRolla, The Drop, Legend, This Means War (might have already seen it as it’s a Romcom) but a must watch is Warrior from 2011.

I’ve always thought it was too long and watching the YouTube edited version sort of confirmed it as I thought the film was better watching a shorter version. But regarding the Oscars Jake Gyllenhaal in Southpaw definitely deserved at least a nomination as I actually thought both him and Matt Damon (who did get a nomination for The Martian) put in better performances than Leo even though he did deserve a nomination. But we all have our own options

Dean Holt

As if the movie wasn’t dramatic enough. Cassie’s reactions were just as thrilling and suspenseful.

The best ever Man vs. Bear film is Werner Herzog's Grizzly Man (2005). Weirdly, soon after that film came out, there was a report that Leonardo Di Caprio had optioned the rights to Timothy Treadwell's story with an eye to playing him in a narrative feature. Leo just really wanted to get mauled by a bear, I guess.

I think all the elaborate long takes that Iñárritu likes to employ these days feel like empty showboating. I don't think he's a filmmaker who has much of interest to say but he sure takes a long time saying it, and while I think The Revenant could have worked as a stripped-to-the-bone 90-100 minute tale of survival and revenge, this film felt way too grandiose. To be honest, I don't care for Lubezki's work here either - compared to his 35mm natural light images in The New World and The Tree of Life, this feels like a bunch of digital screensavers. I usually love Di Caprio - his performance in The Wolf of Wall Street is one of the best pieces of acting of the 21st century - but watching him grimace and gurn his way through this slog did absolutely nothing for me. I don't know, maybe this is all a bit harsh, but talk of Iñárritu tends to make me cranky.

did you see the halloween LITE poll?

Cassie

Once she saw The Pacific, I think she could handle anything. Visually and emotionally brutalizing.

More Tom Hardy pls

matthew

Whens Oct spook polls start up. And I missed this movie to :/ She hit a few I have never seen as of late, so tuff to watch reaction cause spoilers for me. The Game was cool obviously, but Oct is what a week away..

So glad Cassie acknowledged Tom Hardy's performance. His accent was incredible here, although he had a little practice with it in Lawless (2012). As we all know a great villain makes the hero seem even greater.... plus, Cassie gets SO MAD!!! =D Such an intense reaction.

Wow. How? How can you hate a movie like this? That’s such a strong word. “Hate”. Self important? In what way? There’s so little dialogue, so few indulgences you’d see of a typical self important movie. Crash(2004) now that’s a self important movie. And sometimes screen acting is an endurance test. What matters is what does the character go thru and did you believe it? Acting isn’t just delivering dialogue or looking pretty, we all know that. Sometimes it is running, and jumping and screaming or no screaming. And sometimes it’s pain and internal & soulful. Sometimes it’s just breathing. Inarritu was on a role with this and Birdman. But he can be a little on the nose at times and pretentious but not here in my opinion. Plus Chevo shot the shit out of it(which was like he’s 3rd Oscar is as many years?) But it’s primal, this movie. There are a couple parts that take it down a notch tho. While the CGI is impeccable, I feel like the scene where the horse goes over the cliff is…a little too cartoony. Personally I don’t think this is Leo’s best performance. He was terrific here but He was robbed for The Aviator. To me that still remains his single greatest performance. Aviator and he was also robbed for The Departed. He was nominated instead for Blood Diamond but Departed deserved an Oscar. Killers of the Flower Moon looks like it could be a great one too. He rarely disappoints.

At some point, check out “The Edge” for more man vs man vs bear with much of the vs bear aspect. Stars ya boys Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin.

Mark Daniels

Pretty wicked! But WHITE FANG is a great movie. Not so gory. Lol.

Carol Rocha

@Cole Jennett You didn't think he was any good in Gilbert Grape or Basketball Diaries?

Bill W

He travelled all that way and never passed one Tim Hortons.

Bill W

Rough movie. I had my eyes covered watching Cassie!

Lisa

I haven't seen it, but if both Hopkins and Mamet are in good form, this seems promising. (However, if you want to garner support, surely you should have mentioned Elle Macpherson! :-) )

Happy Hanukkah

Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but I hated this movie. I think it's one of the least interesting performances Di Caprio has ever given - the craft of screen acting reduced to an endurance test - and the whole thing feels so bloated and self-important. It has been frustrating for me to see Alejandro González Iñárritu win such acclaim continually when I still think the vibrancy and raw emotion of his debut Amores perros overshadows everything that has followed it.

Henry Graham

One of Hopkins' best ever performances, I think. Killer Mamet script in that one too. I think about "What one man can do, another can do" all the time.

Henry Graham

Definitely check out The Edge (1997). Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin, plus more Bear action. Its honestly a super great movie. You'd really enjoy it. Maybe you could do sort of a Survival type week? There's several movies like The Edge that are all about surviving against the odds out in the nature, could make for a real fun several movies

Astraeos

👍

Still need to watch “The Great Outdoors”

djKENTO: what part of “no gratuitous sadism” do you not understand? Richard Bourne: Fun fact - the same real life bear, Bart, played the main bears in both THE BEAR and THE EDGE. And both times several Academy members officially submitted Bart for Oscar consideration. (Bart also appeared in White Fang and Legends of the Fall.)

My opinion on Leo changed dramatically when I saw him in The Departed. First time I looked at him as anything other then a pretty boy. He pulled it off well imo

Cole Jennett

Unpopular opinion: I have never bought into Leo in any tough guy role. He's just not that guy. I imagined this with Hardy playing the lead and it was SO much better

On the slightly lighter side, THE EDGE 1997. The Bear was fantastic, and huge. Seeing that movie was actually a date night for me, and we agreed, give that Bear an Oscar.

Richard Bourne

let it never be said? Okay… up next… FUNNY GAMES!

djKENTO

Let it not be said ever again that a particular movie is too rough or intense for Cassie. If she can get through this and come out of it with a profound appreciation for what the filmmakers accomplished she can handle anything. That said, she obviously feels things very deeply, so can we not give her movies that are gratuitously sadistic, or in which the violence is the main point of the story? Please? I do have some ideas for other serious non-cheesy animal movies. Guaranteed 100% cheese-free: The Bear (1988): a good follow-up to The Revenant, this entire movie is a live-action coming-of-age story about an orphaned cub told from the bear’s point of view. Beautifully shot and almost dialogue-free, this won a bunch of awards. You should see it if for no other reason than that I think bears deserve some redemption on your channel at this point. The Plague Dogs (1982): it’s animated but definitely not for children. An intense story about the effects of vivisection and an engrossing adventure about two very well-written and well-drawn dog characters. You will get swept away by its storytelling and you will cry. Never Cry Wolf (1983): shot in the Canadian Yukon, this is a fun, moving and fascinating film about a lone researcher studying wolves. I think Cassie would love it, as long as she likes the bassoon, an instrument that features prominently in the film. Down and Out in Beverly Hills (1986): like The Revenant, not really an animal film per se but an animal, a dog, is an important catalyst to the plot. Again, you will be swept away by its storytelling, but in this case you will laugh.
