The Ghost and the Darkness (1996) - Full Reaction

I was completely captivated by this film. I wanted to look away but I couldn't! Thought the main 3 actors were fantastic! So the intro is missing the music in this one, and it makes it SO WEIRD haha. We are fixing that but int the meantime you can watch everything else just fine. Also, sorry about my coughing, I have a cold :(. Hope you enjoy!

The Ghost and the Darkness (1996) - Full Reaction

Comments

I watched Ghandi (1982) a few times over the years. My son watched it with me in 2017 before we visited Ghandi’s house in Mumbai.

Clay F

One day maybe, but it's doubtful anybody will ever react to it sadly. I'm not holding my breath. Old movies, even multiple, multiple award winners, just get absolutely forgotten unless they are in the popular culture somehow. It makes me have a sad. Whats even better, it seems most people have fallen for all the absolutely a historical, no factual basis, rumors and negative propaganda about Gandhi and his life. No fact checking, just people believing whatever they see on the internet.

Astraeos

A big +1 for Gandhi (1982)

Clay F

I remember the red all over the grass made me squeamish...

Em McG

I've seen this before, but it was so long ago I was maybe a teenager or younger so really didn't remember much. Fun watch and reaction. The JAWS shirt was quite appropriate. Serious JAWS influences in this one. BTW, would love to see a JAWS 2 reaction someday! Solid sequel.

SeanATX

And of course Bernard Hill also played Captain Smith in TITANIC. I've seen GHOSTS before but a long time ago so a fun surprise to see King Theoden show up.

SeanATX

Perhaps you've seen this video but if not then you might be interested in this this video, which explains how historically accurate the movie is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4o5QWPKL74E&ab_channel=HistoryBuffs

Cody Nelson

Well, that explains the PAL timing.

Mike Lemon

Der Geist und die Dunkelheit. It is German, literal translation of The Ghost and the Darkness.

Gábor Árki

Not me unfortunately. This movie came out 21 years after I graduated! (Class of 1975)

Richard Rolen

Richard Rolen

Was that a french opening title?

Eric Wallace

Okay so a couple things. Who else here watched this in High School? I think I watched it twice, once in Biology, and once in like Geography I think. Another thing, a recommendation that I seriously, seriously hope you consider that this movie made me think of; Gandhi (1982), Directed by Richard Attenborough, who is Dr. Hammond in Jurassic Park, and starring Ben Kingsley as Gandhi himself. Its honestly a super important movie in my opinion, and another movie I watched in High School that has absolutely stuck with me throughout my entire life.

Astraeos

About 30 mins in I remembered the dream sequence and thought, 'oh my, that is really going to do a number on her'. On the 5th "I will...." I couldn't help but laugh haha. They did you so dirty on that one, it looked like you were about to throw hands.

Erik Daniel

The fermented fruit. XD

Doug Fisher

Went to see this with my friend in the theatre. It is a great movie but the problem with the first time I saw it was we could only get front row seats and all the swaying grass made me motion sick and I had to leave. The positive was the manager gave me comp tickets so I was able to watch it again... from much farther back. lol

Doug Fisher

I visited the Field Museum in Chicago and they have these lions' exhibit in there. The Lions of Tsavo exhibit.

Jacob Colson

Sounds familiar lol. We'll get there some day.

Erik Daniel

Thanks Cassie, for showing me another movie I had never seen before. The two lead performances were great, well worth the price of admission.

Mike LL

Yeah I saw Brotherhood Of The Wolf, but it just didn't do it for me. They didn't do what I thought they were going to do. Without giving away major plotlines. I liked the idea of Native American and Gothic aesthetics. But for me they used the wrong animal.

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

It was mentioned by someone in the comment section after the poll went up.

My_Cousin_Mose

+1 for The Saint

Mike Lemon

If we're talking animal movies, Togo on Disney+ is excellent

Odd Thomas

William Goldman wrote the screenplay. He also did Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, Maverick, The Princess Bride, Misery and heaps of other great movies including All The Presidents Men which would be good to see on the channel.

Jacob King

Another fun 90s jungle movie is Congo, starring Laura Linney from Primal Fear and Tim Curry

Odd Thomas

A fun schlocky movie based on the beast of Gevaudan is Brotherhood of The Wolf. It’s the same basic structure as Ghost and the Darkness except there is a Native American king fu master, secret societies, and a ton of Gothic aesthetics.

Jacob King

The Grey with Liam Neeson is great too; kinda like this but with wolves

Odd Thomas

Since Cassie like this so much, I think she'd really like The Edge.

Johnny

I haven't been to the Field Museum in about 5 years even though I can walk there from where I work. They were still there. Like others have mentioned they didn't have manes which was unexpected. The lions used in the movie look bigger then the real ones but they were still quite the lethal duo.

Obsolyeet

Was partly waiting for Cassie to recognize Bernard Hill (the camp doctor), who played King Theoden in LOTR. And John Kani, who plays Samuel, most recently appeared in BLACK PANTHER. And gosh. Handsome Val Kilmer era, for sure.

Alex Villarreal

Hi Cassie, you said you want to research the true story. This video from "History Buffs" channel is great and really breaks down the true story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4o5QWPKL74E&t=3s

Andy Bodkin

I’m a huge Val Kilmer fan. Met him twice. I highly recommend the Amazon Prime documentary VAL. It’s a great way to get to know an actor that many think they know, but in fact don’t. He’s an artist, through and through. It’s narrated by his son (who sounds exactly like he did before cancer took his voice). A great watch for this channel would be Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang with Val and Robert Downey Jr.

Brian Lowery

Please watch Val in The Saint and Real Genius

Jaime Hernandez

Based on how much you enjoyed this, you should really watch Out of Africa. It'll never win any polls here because I don't think many of your subscribers have seen it or even heard of it. It would have to be a popcorn pick of the month, but Carly would enjoy it too. OoA is directed by Sydney Pollack (Jeremiah Johnson, The Firm, Sabrina) and stars Meryl Streep & Robert Redford. It won 7 Oscars, including best picture and best director. Synopsis: "In 20th-century colonial Kenya, a Danish baroness/plantation owner has a passionate love affair with a free-spirited big-game hunter." Imagine Ghost and the Darkness but less scary, with more epic cinematography of Africa, and a love story with Redford and Streep. How can you go wrong with that?

Jesus F Christ

Between this and The Bridge On The River Kwai, you missed doing an Engineer’s Week - except the only other movie I can think of with building a railroad is Blazing Saddles, which might be a stretch.

2-Can

Cassie funny your wearing a jaws shirt because jaws was base on a man eater shark in early 1900s trust me there are more man eaters then you think

MatthewBrown74m

Great Reaction. To a great movie. I love true stories. Those Lions were scary. They killed for the fun of it.

Rick Williams

This was fun; I have seen it a few times before. I love man-against-beast movies; when John Henry Patterson's wife gets attacked in the dream scene, I thought that was it for Cassie; I thought she passed out because she was already sick. I hope you start feeling better, Cassie.

Eddie Perkins

I'm not in the convo much these days and always late to the party, but was White Fang ever talked about for animal week poll?

Erik Daniel

Watched it just now for the first time. Good stuff and now Toto’s Africa is looping in my head but I’m good with it.

Omar

I have been to see the lions from since childhood 68 years ago. As far as I know they are still at the Field Museum. Not sure if they are scary as much as weird looking. They had no manes which is unusual for male lions. And THIS is even scarier...In 2010, Paul Raffaele wrote a piece for the Smithsonian Magazine about his travels following Bruce Patterson to Kenya to explore the real story. When he arrived in the capital city of Nairobi, a lion had just killed a woman, and only weeks earlier a cattle herder was killed and eaten. “That’s not unusual at Tsavo,” said Samuel Kasiki, the deputy director of biodiversity research and monitoring with the Kenya Wildlife Service. It’s not unusual for the continent of Africa either. A study published in Nature in 2005 counted nearly 600 deaths and 300 people injured by lions in Tanzania alone since 1990

Anthony Perez

Haven't seen this in forever, almost forgot about it, Douglas kinda does that character well, same type person he did in Romancing the Stone/Jewel of the Nile just in a different setting. He plays it well. Since we're doing bridge movies now is Bridges at Toko Ri or Bridge Too Far on the list 🤣

Bubba Fett

I have to say I absolutely loved this reaction. The most unbelievable parts about this story are true. Research it Cassie. But loved your reaction it was intense. There were worse man-eaters The Beast Of Gévaudan that killed 113 in France in the 18th Century, The Tiger of Champawat which killed nearly 400 before being stopped in 1907.

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

Bad bug going around. Had me out two days. Feel better.

Brian Lowery

I am more worried about that cough Cassie, please tell me you are feeling better?

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

“I’m not crying; you’re crying.”

Uncle Phoenix

Growing up my dad introduced me to this movie when I was like 10 years old and it terrified me. Even to this day, even tho I go to the field museum for the dinosaurs, I can never leave without visiting the Tsavo Lions. You should definitely take a trip to see them!

LuMarq

This was a great Saturday afternoon matinee. Thanks Cassie.

Bill Hayden

Cassie should watch Secondhand Lions. In fact, in could have been on the animal poll.

Bill Hayden

I told you, you had to vote for "The Horse Whisperer"! I love Michael Douglas, but Robert is more effective, he also whispers in the lion's ear.😎😁 Great reaction Cassie!

Grégory Gautier

One of Michael Douglas's other best films is Wonder Boys

Odd Thomas

One of the most underrated 90s movies imo

Odd Thomas

This is one of my all-time favorites and I believe it's so underrated. One of my favorite memories of this was during a high school field trip, involving a tour bus. We were allowed to bring movies. By the way, this was back in the days of VHS; for those old enough to remember. Guess which movie I brought. It was so much fun to find out who had never seen the movie, based on their reaction(s) to the 'nightmare scene'; if you know what I mean. LOL

DesertSwordsman

a fun fact about these lions, the real-life lions of Tsavo were mane less. the males don't have manes and are bigger than other lions with the manes. reason those bushels of thorns didn't work was because the lions had nothing to get caught on them. i loved this movie when it came out, the theatre had those lion roars deafening. oh i wanted to add i was soooo waiting for your reaction to when his wife gets attacked. and you didnt disappoint. lol. that was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jimmy Reyes

I don’t know why I got this movie confused with Secondhand Lions with Robert Duvall, Michael Caine and Haley Joel Osment.

Tara

Same director did Predator 2, which given your love for Danny Glover, wouldn't be a bad choice in the future

Choof

watched this one so many times back in the 90s, but now don’t remember it very well so glad there’s a reaction to it…must also admit: I once had the privilege of seeing the lions at the Field Museum in Chicago, it was quite an experience knowing that it was based on a true story

JL_83

I remember being really impressed with this movie when it came out. Being a true story makes it all the more shocking.

Richard Bourne

John Henry Patterson wrote a book of his experiences called The Man-eaters of Tsavo. One of the creepiest details I read was the glowing yellow eyes of the lions staring at the camps during the pitch-black night.

Alex Villarreal

Good question, animals turn from natural behavior for the sake of vengeance?

Celeste McAllister

This is a good one, can't wait to watch a little later. Feel better soon, lol. You can always tell when kids are back in school- the parents get sick...

Dave

I've honestly never heard of this one, is that Michael Douglas and Val Kilmer? Hmm, interesting! I might give it a shot sometime later! For now, duty calls today lol! In less than a week, I turn 35, yet I still feel 21 lol! Sorry you have a cold Cassie, hope you feel better soon, hope you still have a great Saturday! Hope you liked the cute pics I sent you and I hope you enjoyed watching the video link I sent you with the voting poll idea in the messages lol! Love and support always, [virtual hug] God bless you, Carly, and your family! And as always [snaps fingers & winks] stay classy Cassie🥰😁😉😇🙏👍🌹

Wesley White

I'm curious about this one, based on the premise I not just haven't watched it, but I don't think even heard about this movie before. It seems like a rare and intriguing story. Cassie, to close your animal week on a happy note I would suggest watching ANIMALS ARE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE off channel, a 1974 nature documentary about the wildlife in Southern Africa. We loved it as kids with my brother, and despite being a documentary we watched it dozens of times. It is the funniest and most enjoyable documentary I've ever seen.

Gábor Árki

So in real life Micheal Douglas's character never existed. It's not unheard of for two male lions to hunt together. It's the way they did it that was so unusual. Recent studies of the lions hides have shown why the lions hunted the way they did. At least they think.

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

Perfect timing. My pizza was just delivered. Lunch and a watch along of one of my all-time favorite flicks with Cassie. Couldn’t ask for more 🍕🎬😊

Ramzi M. A. Ramzi

Don’t think I’ve ever seen this one. Looking forward to watching it along with you Cassie. P.S. Hope you’re feeling better

Robert da Spruce

Never even heard of this one. Excited to give it a watch

aarswft

Michael Douglas at his peak

Russell Teo

i need to go watch that! thank you! I wonder if anything like it has happened since?

Cassie

If you go to 'History Buffs' channel Nick Hodges has a detailed synopsis on this movie, this really happened..

Celeste McAllister

My dad and I bonded over this movie. One of the first DVDs we ever bought. We loved the music so much we spent a LOT on it’s out of print, low run soundtrack. I’m so excited. One of my favorite Val Kilmer performances.

djKENTO

Such a great Man vs Beast film and based on a true story. The only difference was that the real Lions of Tsavo were maneless. It's crazy that they killed over 130 people.
