[YT Edit] The Abyss (1989)

Hey guys! Here is the YT edit for The Abyss (Special edition) which will premiere shortly! Hope you enjoy!

Here is the full reaction to this movie.

[YT Edit] The Abyss (1989)

Comments

The degradation in quality happens each time a scene that was cut from the theatrical release appears on-screen. The Special Edition includes thirty minutes of scenes that were cut from the theatrical release. These scenes are not as polished and processed as the rest of the film is. I have the laserdisc box set of the Special Edition and the difference in quality is evident on that.

MotoDork

This is why physical media is still king.

MotoDork

Surprised nobody mentioned this, but when you were listing off movies you've seen with Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (Lindsey Brigman), you missed that she also played the Lady Marian in Kevin Costner's Robin Hood.

David Collins

Sphere is really nice

Russell Teo

Ed Harris always works in astronaut or astronaut adjacent roles 👍🏽

Omar

Every time I watch this I find myself fighting to breath normally!

Willard Taylor

"Life's Abyss And Then You Die" - crew T-shirts

Odd Thomas

Seeing as how this is a top favorite of mine..... and I've watched it more than 50 times and will no doubt watch it 50 times more, thanks to you two I now have a new reason to smile and chuckle from now on because I'll hear "unicorn of the ocean?" in my head! Thank you for that! LOL!

Well, I’ve made peace with the ‘piracy’ aspect for two simple reasons… 1) Fox (and now Disney) have never felt compelled to offer me (or anyone) a legit release to buy. It’s hard to argue they’re losing money on something they won’t sell in the first place. And 2) when they DO offer a legit release, I’ll be the first to spend whatever they’re charging to own it day 1. Even though I only watch the 4K theatrical versions of Star Wars… I still own the 4K Blu-rays and subscribe to Disney+. The 4K theatrical Star Wars Trilogy is 4K only… no HDR. But they look stunning and there’s various versions out there. A lot of these are newer scans of 35mm prints and people have dedicated countless hours to restoring these things and making them look their best. But again… If Disney offered legit releases of the original cuts, I’d immediately retire these downloads.

Cliff Stephenson

Other favorite Ed Harris movies of mine are Places in the Heart, Jacknife, Glengarry Glen Ross, China Moon, Absolute Power and Sweet Dreams. He's made many more great movies, but those I listed stand out for me.

Shawn Kildal

Glad you recognized Micheal Biehn. He was also Johnny Ringo in Tombstone (the bad guy sharpshooter)

Shawn Kildal

Great reaction Cassie, glad you and Carly enjoyed it, I haven't seen this movie in ages! Yeah I work a lot Cassie, I gotta if I want to continue supporting the channel and watching your full length reactions lol! It's always an honor and pleasure to chat with you during your YT edit premieres, always worth it! Nice job at recognizing a lot of the actors and what movies they've done that you've seen on the channel so far, however you forgot that James Cameron also directed the first two Terminator films and ALIENS lol! Speaking of James Cameron, I forgot to tell you this during the premiere, I saw him as a guest at the Hollywood premiere of The Hobbit - The Battle of the Five Armies back in 2014, I saw him (and his wife) walk right past me on the red carpet and I was star struck, I said to myself "I'm not worthy" lol! To help answer you and Carly question about the breathable liquid, it's real, it's called Perflubron! It's a potent airway smooth muscle relaxant, a liquid ventilation substance if you will, it was the same stuff used on me when I was 4 years old when I had my first breathing attack because of my asthma at the time, saved my life lol! Anyway, once again, great reaction Cassie, you and Carly are the best, can't wait for more! See you next time, love and support, [virtual hug] God bless you, Carly, and your family! And as always [snaps fingers & winks] stay classy Cassie🥰😁😉😇🙏👍🌹

Wesley White

Since you and Carly asked scuba divers to chime in, here goes. Yes, that scene with the rat was actually real. The liquid is oxygenated perflourocarbon. I'm not certain if it's actually in use for the operator community like SEALS and such though. But even breathing that, there's probably no way Bud would've survived to that depth. For every 33 feet of depth in water you increase pressure by 1 atmosphere (14.7 psi) so do the math. 12000 feet gets you 363 atmospheres of pressure, or 5345 pounds per square inch on your body. Still, fantastic movie (no surprise since it's James Cameron) with amazing underwater cinematography and one I always enjoy seeing.

Brian W

Classic Popcorn Sisters reaction. You guys remain perhaps the ideal first-time viewers for just about anything.

Jason Chirevas

Yeah I’m aware of the bootleg sources that are available. Piracy isn’t my jam tho. I was just curious if there was a streaming service or something that offered an HD version of the Abyss SE that Cassie used. I know the theatrical cut is available. It’s just insane to me that two James Cameron movies, Abyss & True Lies have never been officially released on Blu Ray. It’s ridiculous. It taken them so long there’s an entire new format now. Your Star Wars trilogy(I’m assuming they are the non specialized editions) are they just 4K or HDR10 as well? Special editions don’t bother me with SW’s but those 4K discs Disney released were a major let down. DNR’d all to hell. The grains basically been erased.

Stan the Man

You also know James Cameron from the first 2 Terminator movies, True Lies, and Aliens (the sequel to Alien). Ed Harris wasn't in Crimson Tide. You know him from The Firm, Top Gun Maverick, Apollo 13, The Right Stuff and The Rock.

Shawn Kildal

I have a great looking Blu-ray copy of the special edition that I bought from a bootleg site about 2 years ago. 5.1 audio, gorgeous HD picture and even special features. It’s all out there if you know where to look. I also have amazing looking 4K versions of the original theatrical versions of the Star Wars Trilogy complete with the 70mm 6-track audio, theatrical stereo and even theatrical mono mixes. Technology is now in everyone’s hands and these sources aren’t as rare as they once were. Given that The Abyss Special Edition was finished on film and that 35mm prints were created… it’s not hard for someone to get access to one, scan it on personal equipment, and create a new HD master where one didn’t exist officially. Also… this movie has been rumored for Blu-ray releases forever. It’s not impossible that an HD scan was done, never got released, but got leaked by someone with access to it. There are entire underground communities who devote every waking moment to scanning, fixing and archiving these ignored films.

Cliff Stephenson

Poor Aragorn… never gets any love from Cassie. LOL. Another great Ed Harris movie that I honestly believe that Cassie would enjoy is the Stephen King classic, Needful Things.

ArsTropica

She said "you could revive me in 10 or 15 minutes" but they were giving up after 5 mins... I could hear the disbelief in the theater but I'm like hey now...

Mannygogou

Okay wow I haven't seen that version... or maybe I just forgot. I'm sure it's all been said but it's fun to comment anyway... Biehn the bad guy here formerly liked as Reese... Do you remember watching Tombstone and there was a guy opposite of Doc Holliday, yes that crazy guy who was "a little high strung" Johnny Ringo, that was also Michael Biehn. And the ship out of the water looking not as cool... that is what things look like in the bright sun versus in the dark deep... the internal glow that's lovely in the dark just is washed out in the light of day. Loved the reaction, heck I also enjoyed the pre-show banter, you two are super endearing. Oh and Ed Harris was great as an astronaut in The Right Stuff but you knew that. And I love Cassie singing to calm herself, you should go ahead and watch Little Shop of Horrors everyone's favorite horror musical comedy with Rick Moranis who was specially chosen for his singing. I've digressed haven't I?

Mannygogou

DVD yes? Also definitely on Laserdisc special edition

Mannygogou

@Jeffrey Schmidbauer Well done.

Just Plain Bob

wait, but disc? 😊

Mannygogou

I've wanted to see Sphere again so I've been trying to have a reactor do it... There are 3 answers, 1) I had to watch it on my own, 2) I did get a reactor to do it, 3) it was coincidence that somebody did react to it and... I'm going to check it out now.

Mannygogou

@JeffreySchmidbauer Nice one! =D

Bill W

It’s probably a bootleg copy.

Tim Raths

Big Big Big Plus ONE for The Andromeda Strain (1971).

Larry Darrell

Someone I know had it in their collection

Celeste McAllister

And for you Flat Earthers, it's called "Circle".

Jeffrey Schmidbauer

Yeah that version is letterboxed. It’s not 16x9. It would look super stretched & wonky on a modern TV

Stan the Man

How did you get a blu-ray of this? It’s never been released on that format.

Tim Raths

If you're still in the mood for underwater submersible sci films after this I highly recommend Sphere(1998). Not as classic as Abyss but just as fun. Makes you think.

Blake Evans

The film barely broke even at the box office.

Jeffrey Schmidbauer

You can see a clear degradation of PQ when it gets to the ending of the movie, so my guess is that this is a combination of material from the HDTV version (theatrical cut) and the Special Edition (DVD).

Tyler Foster

i have an extra copy i could send you!

Cassie

Amazon says it's no longer available so... : (

MertzRocks

Coffee was definitely dishonorably discharged.

JC762

This is the version that I had. Not sure if it was the one on stream. You'd have to ask Cassie. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00008G8LY/

Cheshire

you guys should watch the making of the abyss. it was basically hell on this earth.

rubberkidney

This was clearly HD footage tho, right? That didn’t look like the DVD. The dvd is not 16x9 and looks awful. At least the one I’ve seen.

Stan the Man

It should be noted that this movie was one of the most crazy productions ever. That water tentacle was one of the first uses of CGI ever but everyone who did this movie said it was just about the hardest film they’ve ever done. There’s a making of documentary that details how they filmed all the underwater stuff and the toll that took on the cast and crew.

Stan the Man

Love either version of this movie, but the theatrical release cut out all the messages about nuclear war, etc, which made it a more straight up underwater thriller without the heavy-handed messages. Thanks for watching this though, it's one of my all-time favourites!

Jason Jardine

I loved the book The Great Train Robbery, but the movie bored me to tears.

Just Plain Bob

Ugh, SPHERE. Good book. Lousy movie. As for great adaptations of Michael Crichton novels, I'd also put THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY (which he directed himself) up there.

Stick Figure Studios

That's funny.

Stick Figure Studios

Oops, forgot about The Andromeda Strain when I wrote that Sphere was the second best adaptation of Crichton’s work.

Just Plain Bob

I’d love to see a reaction to Sphere, based on Michael Crichton’s novel. Also set almost entirely underwater, I personally like it better than The Abyss. I think it’s the best adaptation of his work other than the first Jurassic Park movie.

Just Plain Bob

Ed Harris vs Michael Biehn get a round 2 in The Rock.

Menno

There was less of the "the world is ending" stuff in the theatrical release.

Jeff Rogers

Amazon typically has the Special Edition DVD in stock in limited quantities. IIRC, the second disc in the two-disc set is just Cameron's commentary. I'd go with the single disc. There's also a crappy VHS bootleg of "Under Pressure: Making 'The Abyss'" on FB right now. I'm not posting the URL, but it's easy to find. Definitely worth the watch, if you are a fan of The Abyss, and/or brutal filming conditions. The cast and crew earned their pay for this film.

Cheshire

I see you guys let us know about your guys's Instagram but you should remind people more of the Facebook page

Manuel Villacana

Did I hear correctly that Carly had a work trip in Mexico?

Manuel Villacana

DVD. I have the same copy in this quality.

Zane From Canada

Wait. Where did you get a copy of the special edition in this quality?

Stan the Man

I've only just noticed this. Thanks for bringing it up.

ROBERT CLARK

I just noticed that Michael Biehn has been bitten on the hand in every James Cameron movie he was in. Sarah bit him in The Terminator. Newt bit him in Aliens. Bud bit him in The Abyss.

Zane From Canada

Also eagelry awaiting Parenthood. The order of these posts really confuses me.

Chris Perry

It's cute that you two obviously are so concerned and sweat over which versions of films to watch, wanting to please everyone. Hope we all didn't make it rough for you (with debate and such). Please don't worry or stress about such things too much, While I for one put in my $.02 (as it happens, for the watching the theatrical first), I think we can all agree that in the end that what matters most is we all are happy that you're watching it and that you are both happy and (hopefully) enjoying it, and taking the time to share in it with us, and we all are enjoying the experience together. That's what's really important in the end. :)

Nathan

When is Parenthood coming? 🙂

Rudy Hernandez

Carly Cruise 🤭🇨🇦

Danika Silva

"She's breathin but,she ain't diggin it!" My Blu Ray copy showed up yesterday I got time to watch the full reaction before the premier.

Celeste McAllister

Really glad you two liked this one.

Matt Rose

Hand raised

Darrell berger

"Raise your hand if you think that was a Russian water tentacle"

Stranger2Reality

Sweet. Been waiting for this one, such a cool movie.
