[YT Edit] Red Dawn (1984)

Hey guys! Here is the YT edit for Red Dawn, which will premiere shortly. The full reaction to The Abyss should be up tonight followed by Platoon tomorrow. Hope you're having a great weekend so far!

Here is the full reaction to this movie.

[YT Edit] Red Dawn (1984)

Definitely a leave-your-brain-somewhere-else movie. I can't help wondering about things like where these invaders flew from (since they had no bases even close to being within transport aircraft range of the central U.S.), how they were supposed to be keeping them supplied (same problem), how they supposedly pulled this off when the invading countries combined had less population than the U.S., how it was a surprise when there would have been no way to pull this stunt with less than several hours lead time even if planes with the needed range had existed, how they made it past the Air Force (not to mention the rest of NATO), where the Army, Marine Corps, and National Guard were, and on and on. Sorry, folks, this is a cartoon.

Jim Finley

It’s pretty ropey, has its moments but even when I saw this aged 15 I didn’t think it was up to much.

Jonathan Fearby

I was a junior in high school when this movie was released and at the height of the cold war it seemed very possible. A lot of younger folks have no idea how it felt to be from a family with a history of military service at a time when open war was a very tangible reality. My plan at the time the movie was made was whether to serve before or after college, not whether or not I would serve. Partisans are a real concern, after all Afghanistan has returned to Taliban control after many years of guerrilla fighting.

Allen McDonnell

It Happened One Night couldn't be more different than Red Dawn. Two Academy Award winners Clark Gable and Claudet Colbert. A script written by writers that were accomplished and filmed by people that knew what they were doing. I'm pretty much OG myself and i think to appreciate some of the films we watch on this channel we need to watch more films from 30s and 40s. We've seen some Jimmy Stewart but not Jimmy Stewart in a 1930s the Thin Man. Let's get some film history under our belts before I have to resign my membership. Once again the Treasure of the Sierra Madre rules.

Christopher Carr

I...really enjoyed this movie when I was 11...

Walter

I would never downvote Cassie, since she always seems so kind and sincere. And no downvoting others prevents arguments, to be sure. I was just surprised that ppl backed the film. I imagine most folks here in the patreon have a good sense of what SHE would like and not just what THEY like.

Nathan

A Cold War movie you should definitely see is The Manchurian Candidate (the 1960’s original). It captures the fear bordering on paranoia that commies were everywhere and no one was above suspicion.

Stephen Malloy

The cartoon seemed to stop in the late 70's and the drills didn't stop till maybe early 80's? Some people are surprised and shocked that this was done; whereas others actually experienced it as I did. Part of my point is that there were generations of kids that grew up being taught about 'the bomb' and what to expect and what to do. This movie kind of reflects that.

Randolph Tirazona

Yeah, I got a kick out of it when I was 12.

Bill W

I'm not sure which generation you mean. I know "Duck and Cover" arose in the 50s, and the schools had nuclear drills as far back as then. with bomb shelters being built etc Were there schools still doing that in the 80s? None of the ones in my neighborhood did them.

Bill W

Rob Lowe, Diane Lane, C. Thomas Howell (also in this picture). And Leif Garrett! =D

Bill W

I watched it on Amazon a while back and I don't believe there were any subtitles for the non-English languages.

Bill W

When watching old movies I try and put myself in the frame of mind of the target audience age. And only compare to what has been done before, instead of new stuff. Movies are for fun I try and not worry about reality and just enjoy the ride.

Manuel beltran

^The Outsiders" 😊

Johnny Salinas

Now get ready to cry when you watch "The Outsider" 😊

Johnny Salinas

sadly, no downvotes exist on this forum

Once again, this was a great reaction Cassie! Despite some troll who commented on my comment about your reaction today on YT, you said it yourself that you didn't hate it, but at the same time, you didn't love it, so I say you "somewhat" liked it, or you at least appreciated it for what it was, an 80's cheese action movie classic, with a touch of the "what if" senario, if WWIII broke out during the cold war and communism reigned supreme! I admit, this isn't a perfect movie, but it's action movie fun with a great cast and a touch of emotions! I still watch this movie every year during 4th of July season because of the patriotism theme! Plus Basil Poledorious' soundtrack is awesome! Anyway, I had a lot of fun partaking in the reaction today, despite some internet troll! Have a great weekend Cassie, love and support, see you for the next premiere! You (and Carly) are the best, [virtual hug] God bless you and Carly and your family, [snaps fingers & winks] stay classy Cassie, and............ ✊"WOLVERINES!!!" lol🤣 Had to do it, so iconic lol! 🥰😁😉😇🙏👍🌹

Wesley White

Mike, I agree 100% with everything you said. Thanks for putting it so well.

Arki Kali

That is pretty good. During her last live in the Parenthood watchalong I think it was, she said they would watch the theatrical edition. I am curious where you can now get the special edition.

Brian McGovern

I have really enjoyed your reaction videos for awhile. I'm just shocked and sorry to see that some of viewers have voted that you to take time watching a movie that, well, to put it nicely, is of such poor caliber. (Did people warn you that at the time -- and for some time after -- this film held the record for the most acting of violence in a single film? I'm not sure that is the type of film I'd recommend to you that you might like.) There is little redeeming about this film, imho (and anything it might do alright, any number of films do much better.) You have such wonderful reactions, I dearly hope that folks will encourage you to spend your valuable time on more valuable films that are more worthwhile and more like what YOU might enjoy most. (For instance, I loved your Lord of the Rings, your North by Northwest, and so many others, especially with your sister.) Looking forward to more!

Nathan

I support Cassie and Carly reacting to more chick flicks. Mainly because I LOVE to see them smile!

Barry Justice

Yeah this is cold war era American propaganda at its finest. It is honestly half a step down from Rambo. For a much better war movie that you will appreciate please consider Joyeux Noel in December. You will love it.

Dissonant Bard

For "entertaining movie about Cubans invading" I gotta pick INVASION USA with Chuck Norris instead. Doesn't pretend to be anything besides stupid fun.

Paul Stelter

RED DAWN is 100% Eighties cheese, but what an amazing cast of future stars, plus people who we now consider legendary character actors (Harry Dean Stanton, Powers Boothe). Pretty sad to see Ron "Superfly" O'Neal as a Cuban colonel though. Poor guy had no career once blaxploitation went out of style.

Paul Stelter

Cassie, you did miss a lot of context without subtitles for the Spanish and Russian that was spoken (strange that it wasn’t just included here like it was in the theater and all the cable re-plays). The Cuban officer probably had the biggest character arc - his own background was in leading insurgencies around the world, but here he found himself trying to fight insurgents (the Wolverines). He was against the Russian reprisals against civilians as he knew that would strengthen local support for the Wolverines as it had for him in his experiences. By the end of the movie he was so disillusioned that he couldn’t bring himself to shoot the brothers and let them get away. Not saying you should rewatch it with subtitles, but it might have earned another half-point or so from you.

2-Can

It's too bad IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT didn't win, because both Cassie and Carly would like it -- literally one of the OG Hollywood rom-coms. But I'm confident they'll get to it eventually. :)

Paul Stelter

There's never a time where every single viewer of a reaction channel is completely satisfied by every film that the reactor is watching. So no, you're definitely not alone in feeling that way. Like Brian said, Cassie is branching out and always has and covers a lot of genres and decades - I'd argue more than any other reaction channel out there. The channel goes through waves and themes (like theme weeks!) and will continue to. In the meantime, make sure you've submitted your movie requests through Planner's app: popcornrequests.com

"And now all you will all attack me, which will just prove my point." That feels pretty Kafka trap-esque and is not only a logical fallacy but just a dink-ish maneuver. "Especially scary since there is a very loud political contingent trying to drag the culture back to that time." Say you have no idea what the "other side" thinks without actually saying it. That said, why do some feel the need to inject politics into everything? This is just people watching movies, an escape. Take the stick out and enjoy the ride.

Mike Lemon

It was better than North Koreans in the remake. I know it was supposed to be Chinese, but money dried up in 2008 so they got money from China and there were strings attached.

Michael J Paulus

I don’t disagree with any of the critiques leveled against the films you’ve mentioned. There have been many films shown on here that are not in my wheelhouse. But, then again, that’s the whole point. A young woman who watched primarily romantic comedies her whole life, branching out and trying new cinematic experiences. Part of that branching out means wading through movies that are older and therefore not as sensitive toward certain subjects as some would like. Everyone gets their day here. Even the “macho” dudebro contingent. I appreciate that.

Brian Lowery

I’m glad you recently did Erin Brockovich because otherwise I would start thinking that this was the 80s Macho Channel. Between the these-colors-don’t-run jingoism of Red Dawn and the homophobic “humor” of Kindergarten Cop (particularly cringe coming so soon after the Philadelphia reaction) and the war-is-hell-but-what-a-ride atrocity porn of Platoon (proving that neither political party has a monopoly on manhood-waving) it really feels like we’re going all in on the manly men grunting and bleeding their way toward domination. Especially scary since there is a very loud political contingent trying to drag the culture back to that time. I know I’m the only one who feels this way and everyone else seems to love this trend, but it’s depressing me. And now all you will all attack me, which will just prove my point. Once again the bullies win. Sigh.

jdj830

The Abyss should be fun.

Bill Hayden

I ordered mine from Amazon prime today. Unfortunately, I have to wait till tomorrow to get it.

Michael Lynch

"You can't just rocket launch at random citizens" - one of my fav Cassie quotes! :D

Gary B

It was fun at the time, silly now.

Jeff Rogers

Thanks

Larry Darrell

Yeah

JC762

Do you have the DVD of the abyss?

Michael Lynch

The movie is now a bit dated, but entertaining. Cubans invading? Get real.

Jeffrey Schmidbauer

I love the expression on your face that they went with for this thumbnail. It shows the utter shock and horror you must have experienced watching the sheer ugliness of this movie.

Stick Figure Studios

Please please let Abyss drop while the clock still says “p.m.” 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻😂

JC762

This was a different era, "US" against them "Russia" and it was a 'what if' movie too; during the height of the Cold War/Star Wars Defense Initiative (SDI). A lot of us love this movie, but now being much older I know exactly what Cassie is talking about. There are a lot of 'things that could have been better.' I've seen the remake but that doesn't do much better. Sadly it seems more like 'what you need to do in case IT happens.' I think that's a thing that needs to be considered at times - what 'environment' the movie was made and this is clearly one of those movies. I know it had some criticism when it came out, but 'we' went to see it anyway and all of us really liked it. OH - this is from the generation that had nuclear drills in Elementary School!!! Duck & Cover! Elementary School mind you! Thank you Cassie!

Randolph Tirazona

can not wait for Platoon

zynjams

Also Roadhouse is pretty good

Manuel Villacana

While this movie was a reaction to the heightened tension of the Cold War and has been criticized as being overly jingoistic, its portrayal of life in an America under Soviet occupation was spot on. One need only examine the Soviet occupation of Eastern Germany in 1945, Hungary in 1956, Czechoslovakia in 1968, and Afghanistan in 1979 to realize that.

John

I like that one a lot too.

Stuart Guthrie

One of my favorite Patrick swayze movies is The outsiders ,, it also has Tom Cruise Ralph macchio Emilio estevez Matt Dillon

Manuel Villacana

Thanks

Michael Lynch

Thank you

Michael Lynch

Carly said on Instagram they watched the special edition

Daniel Skinner

According to secondhand info on Discord, they reacted to the Special Edition cut.

Gábor Árki

I hope she watches the Special Edition. I love all the extra stuff James Cameron was able to put in after its release with that version.

Stranger2Reality

Wow, haven't seen this in decades. You have to remember, this movie was made in the height of the Cold War. Back then the paranoia and fear of a WW3 was everywhere in society. So it was a child of it's time

Shanwyn Nightfox

Awesome. Is it just the regular version of the abyss or is it the special edition?

Michael Lynch

One of my favorite 80s action films. Wolverines!!!!
