[Full Reaction] Parenthood (1989)

Delightful, real, heart wrenching and heart warming at the same time. My favorite tv show by the same name was inspired by this and I know why I love both!! This was such a good watch along and Steve Martin is my feel-good guy!

[Full Reaction] Parenthood (1989)

Comments

Can't say enough good things about this film. Hits so many marks. The cast is brilliant and the timing is so spot on. No sooner does it have you rapt in one emotional state, than it takes a sharp turn into another, then back again. I guess I'm a rollercoaster kind of guy. I just really love it.

BRT

Still wondering when the YouTube cut of this one will be posted on here? Can’t wait!

Chris Perry

Back when Keanu and Jaquine Phoenix were just starting to really make a name for themselves. As for Mary Steenbergen (Gils wife), if you like her you have to watch Did you hear about the morgans. It's, her, Hugh Grant, Sarah Jessica Parker and Sam Elliot. it's a fun film. As for the throw up scene and her head spinning around that's a Exorcist reference.

Ryan Towell

She had a live chat with her and nobody told her that was Joaquin Phoenix? C'mon chat! Chat it up!

Meet the Parents (2000)

Clay F

This week, probably Saturday!

Cassie

When will the YouTube version be posted?

Chris Perry

That's something She should watch this Halloween, but I know she is too scared to.

Eddie Perkins

Father of the Bride (1991) is a movie you would love; Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Planes, Trains and Automobiles are my two favorite Steve Martin films.

Eddie Perkins

One of Joaquin Phoenix's first movies, I believe (when he was still going under the name Leaf Phoenix)... in the role of Gary. And one of Keanu's best performances, in my opinion.

D. T. Nelson

I've always loved this movie. Definitely worth reacting to. But between your reaction to this and Kindergarten Cop, I think you'd definitely love Junior. I need to check if you've watched the "Father of the Bride" remake with Steve Martin, and its sequel. Those are particularly heartwarming too.

Singing Wordwright

Nice reaction Cassie! I forgot how relatable the characters and issues are in this film. Or I was too young to really understand when I saw it the first time 😂 And don’t feel bad. I didn’t recognize Joaquin Phoenix either!

Robert da Spruce

I'm not sure how much "range" Keanu Reeves really has, but I will say that he does play the parts that are within his range very well. You really need to see BILL AND TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE to get an idea of how he started (the character he plays in that film, Ted, is actually very similar to Tod from this one).

Stick Figure Studios

He didn’t do any of his Lasso tricks though, as Cowboy Gil. She’ll have to watch Three Amigos (1986) for that.

Larry Darrell

There were actually Two TV series. The first was in 1990, right after the film, and it only lasted 12 Episodes. Leonardo DiCaprio played Garry.

Larry Darrell

Keep up the solo videos. Thanks Cassie!

Gideon James

Me too. If you like the twists and turns in The Sting and the hilarity in What About Bob, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels would be an excellent relief after a brutal war movie.

Grinznmore

That's honestly how good an actor Joaquin aka "Leaf" Phoenix was even back then, you can't even tell it's him lol. Love this movie and had a great time watching it with Cassie!

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

I adore this movie! It was so great to watch it again with you! I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Juley

Steve Martin used to do balloon animal comedy in his early stand up, so I suspect that gag in this film is a reference to that.

Stick Figure Studios

I was ready for the hurling of the pea soup..

Celeste McAllister

"I'm waiting for her head to spin around" is actually a reference to THE EXORCIST.

Stick Figure Studios

All of those actors have taken more serious roles in their career with varying degrees of success. As for not finding them funny, while some are naturally better than others, all of them are funny to some degree. You should try watching their work for more than 2 minutes. You might be surprised.

Stick Figure Studios

I've been pushing DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS for a long time. One of my favorites.

Stick Figure Studios

Love GRAND CANYON.

Stick Figure Studios

She's always good, but Dianne Wiest is spectacularly good here. She can turn on a dime from funny to heartbreaking. She should have won a third Best Supporting Actress Oscar for this role.

Henry Graham

So I went back and watched the live version since I missed that one. I loved it this was Classic Cassie!!! Fabulous reaction. Problems with the AC trying to dry her eyes. Cassie nobody is going to fault you for crying. My older sister is in her 50's and still cries at this movie and she owns it. Joaquin Phoenix as Gary. I always thought that his brother River was better. Until I saw Gladiator and then The Joker. He is an amazing actor knowing what those boys went through with that cult.

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

Never liked SM. Chevy Chase, Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Adam Sandler and Steve Martin would have been great actors if they have taken more serious roles. They are not funny. When they tried too hard, I switch off within 2min

Russell Teo

I didn't remember the TV Series. But, after you mentioned it I looked it up and I remember it now. I had forgot about it.

Rick Williams

More Lawrence Kasdan. Yes. Great Film.

Larry Darrell

Based on the title and Steve Martin I thought I've seen this movie before, but it turned out I mixed it up probably with FATHER OF THE BRIDE and this was a first time watch for me. There are so many good moments and scenes in this film, and it just feels so real. This movie makes you smile, cringe and think at the same time. I enjoyed it very much, as well as the heartwarming reaction. I still can't believe that Garry is Joaquin Phoenix. I never would have figured that out. Originally, I wanted to suggest a few Steve Martin movies, but after realizing what they have in common, I have a better idea: Movies About Making Movies. It could be a poll or theme week, with the common aspect of featuring movies that revolve around filmmaking. Some ideas: THE PLAYER (1992) CHAPLIN (1992) ED WOOD (1994) GET SHORTY (1995) BOWFINGER (1999) THREE AMIGOS (1986) WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT (1988) THE ARTIST (2011) HUGO (2011)

Gábor Árki

I loved this movie when it came out but I had forgotten one of the best/funniest moments. When Todd talks about the license to be a father, pauses, and then shakes his head as if he's trying to remove the coherent thought he just had it makes me lol.

JayF

...and Cassie's heart was warmed...

Terry Yelmene

I maybe watched this movie just the once a long time ago. It had a lot of feels of the family movie kind and a lot of great supporting performances. Glad Cassie was able to watch one right up her alley! I wonder if any one will tell her that the Grandpa in this story was the nasty Charles Wheeler, the senior law partner in the Philadelphia movie?

Mike LL

A Simple Twist of Fate would be very interesting. Not only has no one ever reacted to it, but most people haven't ever heard of it. Also, she probably would enjoy it.

WastedPo

For more Steve Martin I recommend Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Bowfinger. Another that Cassie would absolutely love but wouldn't get many views is A Simple Twist of Fate.

JayF

I tried this link again and it worked!!

fish_thefilmcollector

'Grand Canyon' is SM in a seriously funny slice of life film with Danny Glover,Kevin Kline and a strong supporting cast, another great film not getting the attention it deserves! ♡

Celeste McAllister

Never saw Parenthood before watching it Live with Cassie and the kernals. 😁 My takeaway from the movie was that characters that I wasn't expecting to step up did (like "That Todd"). And, other characters that I wished would step up didn't (like Larry). Also, my dad and I sang the diarrhea song when I was a kid. I had no idea it was from this, I always thought it was some sort of old time Vaudeville song. 🤣🤣🤣

Zane From Canada

Hey there! I just tried both links, and they worked for me. If you're on Discord, reach out for help in "PiB chat" and we can help you troubleshoot what the issue is 😉

Jon Johns

Can’t wait to watch. This movie is my literal childhood. Filmed all in Orlando (Universal was doing this due to the new park). They used my little league (College Park), so that is how I got into the film. I was then picked to be a kid at the birthday party. So many fun memories. Got to spend a day hanging out with Steve Martin filming the scene where his kid drops the fly ball. I am the one on the right that walks past and takes up the whole screen.

John Boone

I love Parenthood. I love this reaction!

Philip Alan

Download the vid? It works!

Philip Alan

The link that is attached to this comment section. That's the only one that I know of.

fish_thefilmcollector

Which link? The embedded YT video works fine for me, although still only 360p at the time. The direkt link to YT works fine too. The Google Drive link works too, although this version is still processing but the original file can be downloaded regardless.

Gábor Árki

I just tried it and it won't load for me either.

Kevin Charley

Link won't load from any of my devices. Just keeps buffering. Am I the only one this is happening to?

fish_thefilmcollector

I always have fun watching along with the PiB fam, but this one hit different … completely relatable and familiar in a way family movies rarely achieve. This was funny, yet deep. For me, this will go down as a 2023 PiB member highlight. I’m glad we watched it together. “That Todd!”
