[YT Edit] Vertigo (1958)

Hey guys! Here is the YT edit for Vertigo, which will premiere shortly. Hope you enjoy!

Here is the full reaction to this movie.

[YT Edit] Vertigo (1958)

Comments

It’s a one off for Hitchcock- neither of the main characters are easy to like and the story very drawn out and slow. It’s a great film but I get why it was panned on release.

Jonathan Fearby

You got dressed up! No t shirt!! =D

Bill W

I'm probably in the minority of people looking forward to this one but when do you plan on watching Indy 4?

Jyn Jilly

Yup, there is trickery in everyday partnerships, where women and men are dressed up to look gorgeous and beautiful, and then underwhelms each other the next day with their lack of makeup and eccentric life styles, realizing the person they knew yesterday doesn't actually exist. I think this movie basically symbolizes that.

Lance Li

You look so precious when you're absolutely stymied. (Your ending reaction to the abrupt ending.) WHAT!??

Jeffrey Schmidbauer

Fantastic react, again Cassie! Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak starred in another film together, Bell, Book, And Candle. One I would definitely recommend watching if you like them both. Certainly not nearly as "OMG what the heck is going on now?!" as Vertigo, and a much better ending. And I love that you're diving into classic movies, it's my go to stuff to watch on my off duty days. Would love to see (if you haven't done it, I'm still new to the page) suggestion post for classic movies to dive into.

Brian W

Hitchcock made a point to have his cameo relatively early in the film, because he knew people were distracted from the plot while concentrating on finding the cameo. :)

Robert Nelson

Next, see Hitchcock's "The Man Who Knew Too Much" starring, once again, Jimmy Stewart. And Doris Day as the wife .

It's kind of tricky, actually. The copyright protection for movies lasts until January 1st of its 96th year from creation (so, ie, it lasts for 95 years). In 1998, before the copyright for Steamboat Willie (the first Mickey Mouse cartoon) expired, the US added 20 more years of copyright protection to the existing 75-year term. A lot of people decry this as corporate welfare for Disney (who did lobby for it) but there was an announced desire to incentivize the copyright owners to spend the money to digitize their catalogs (which, face it, we all enjoy today - even on this channel) - but I am NOT here to take either side. Interestingly, unlike in Europe, the new US law did not revive any copyrights which had expired within the last 20 years before 1998, so it only extended the term for those still enjoying protection. So there is something of a mishmash, since, for various reasons, a copyright might have expired before the full term and did not qualify for the additional protection in 1998. Note that, for a long time, copyrights had to be renewed with the Copyright Office half-way through their maximum term to still qualify for the protection. One of the reasons 'It's a Wonderful Life' became a round-the-clock Christmas movie was that its copyright had not been renewed and it fell into the public domain (I remember a story about one TV station that played it continuously throughout December). But, as I understand it, someone (maybe NBC) figured a way to cobble together the still-unexpired copyrights for the film score and underlying book so as to be able to re-assert the copyright for the film (which does not get the same kind of airplay on TV as it used to, so it looks like TV broadcasters respect the current copyright claim). It seems like every year there will be articles about popular songs/movies that fall into the public domain, for those interested. But, bottom line, it can be tricky to determine when a film falls into public domain.

I don't think she fell. I always thought she jumped because her guilt - she was an accomplice to murder, after all - overcame her when she saw the obscured image of the nun approaching.

David Conroy

One of your BEST. ENDINGS. EVER!!! 🤣🤣🤣

Bryan Fritchie

That’s some good info. Thanks. (Thumbs Up Emoji)

Uncle Phoenix

A film enters the public domain on January 1st of its 76th year from creation. US films at least.

I'll second To Catch a Thief for Cassie's next Hitchcock film. Not only do I agree it's his most romantic film, it's one of his most lighthearted and fun - a nice antidote to Vertigo.

David Conroy

At the beginning of 2022 I wanted Cassie to watch three films: The Quiet Man, The Best Years of Our Lives, and Vertigo! I am truly thankful and appreciative that now she has seen all three and given such great reactions. In fact, I can hardly believe it! And in the meantime she has watched a few other really great films that I wanted her to see like Open Range and North by Northwest. Cassie is just the best!

Mike LL

Very interesting way to look at the film. But I always think that Madeline is not really a character in the film. We only see her corpse. But I understand what you mean.

Mike LL

Yes, with the NbNw and Vertigo watches, she is now ready to see High Anxiety, but not right away! 😂 ( I don't want it to seem that she watched the classics just to be ready for the spoof! )

Mike LL

... ... ... .. ... ... ... ... "WHAT???" (now that's a memorable reaction!!!).

Terry Yelmene

Thank you, Cassie, for this perfect reaction to an all-time classic! It's truly a privilege to see you respond so genuinely to the deep emotions of this film. And your stunned silence at the end shows us what a true "mind-blowing ending" should look like! As you said, "Vertigo" is a profoundly sad film. I think the sadness comes from the idea that "it's too late," that even if we were given a second chance, we're sometimes too damaged by our past (i.e., our obsessions, sins, traumas, delusions) to take advantage of it. In that way, "Vertigo" is similar to "Shutter Island," which is also about a character who is so broken that he's incapable of accepting a second chance. When faced with such brokenness, all we can say is what the nun says at the end of Vertigo, "God have mercy."

David Woodbridge

Vertigo is a shocking masterpiece. One of the ways the movie works is in the casting. James Stewart was the middle American normal guy. Hitchcock takes his public image and slowly shows the obsessive off kilter person. That is one of the many themes of the movie. The public and private people we all are outside and inside. Stewart has 2 names...Johnny and Scotty. Kim Novack actually has 3 names and personalities in the movie. The husband is publicly good but internally evil. Hitchcock to the public was the personification of a reserved English scholarly intellectual. In private he obsessed over several of his leading ladies, was a voyeur, and had many sexual hangups that he featured in his movies. Vertigo follows Rear Window into shining a light on Hitchcock. In both movies he has James Stewart in the lead with a beautiful blond being the driving force behind the emotions that are dark and obsessive.

Bill Bowman

This movie is 65 years old. Hasn’t the Intellectual Property rights runout? Does anyone know when reactors can legally show the whole film?

Uncle Phoenix

I wasn’t sure what you would think of this film, and it seems you aren’t sure either - getting into the weeds of what is really going on could drive the viewer as insane as the characters. This is especially challenging for someone like you who gets so caught up with the situations happening on screen. As you discovered, the only way to avoid going mad is to step back and admire what Hitchcock did here. He’s a cruel genius. You’ve seen his best at this point; the only other of his films I would say is necessary viewing is Rebecca, another work that has influenced the culture in many ways. Speaking of which, this would be an excellent time to watch Mel Brooks’ High Anxiety, which is to Vertigo what Young Frankenstein is to the 1931 original. Glad to see you branching out! You’re the best thing on YouTube.

Cassie, I think you and Carly both would enjoy To Catch a Thief, with Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. Arguably Hitch's most romantic movie.

John

I agree with your assessment of Hitchcock's Early American films, particularly Shadow of a Doubt, which is my personal favorite Hitchcock film.

John

Cassie, a suggestion for a follow up: High Anxiety by and starring Mel Brooks. A spoof of several Hitchcock movies.

The Golden Gate bridge is where the pacific ocean meets the San Francisco Bay. The waters are very rough in that area and sharks are known to visit every once in a while. The Golden Gate Bridge is also known as a “popular” place to jump and commit suicide. But that’s up on the bridge, which is obviously a higher distance.

Mary Alice

So cool. I’m from SF, it is so cool to see it in its heyday. I recognize most of the landmarks. Plus I have always wanted to see Vertigo. Yhank you!

Mary Alice

So glad you’re seeing two Hitch films in a row! Hoping to see you dive into the rest of Hitchcock’s filmography as time goes on to see how you respond to his career as a whole and how he evolved as a director/artist. Thats what makes watching a director’s work continuously helps with learning more about auteurs and how they make their movies, develop their individual style and vision. I’d divide his filmography up into these times 1. BRITISH CINEMA (1920s to 1930s): roots. Good examples include The Lodger, Blackmail, 39 Steps, Sabotage, The Lady Vanishes 2. EARLY AMERICAN (1940 to 1948): Rebecca, Suspicion, Shadow of a Doubt, Lifeboat, Spellbound, Notorious, Rope. An underrated era. A lot Of my favorites from this period. Hitchcock’s personal favorite in his career was shadow of a doubt. Teresa Wright also stars in that. 3. Golden age (1950s): The greats. Stranger on a Train, Dial M for Murder, Rear Window, Wrong Man, To Catch a Thief, North by Northwest, Vertigo 4. The watermark (1960 to 1964): Psycho, Birds and Marnie (Sean Connery and Tippi Hedren) 5. Twilight years (1966 to 1976): Frenzy (a great one), Torn Curtain, Topaz, family plot (final film)
