Enthusiastically seconding "Arsenic and Old Lace" and "Father Goose"! Haven't seen the others, but they're no doubt also good.

Jim Finley

Masterpiece Hitchcock. Probably Hitchcock’s best movie. Every new viewing decades later is revelation of great script, acting chop & superb cinematography

Russell Teo

Hopefully sooner rather than later😉

Jan Sørensen

Yeah "Land of mine" is great, but I havent seen the whole movie. April 9th is very good. Very accurate to the real invasion. The King's choise from Norway is also great, and Talvisota from Finland 🙂 and (belive it or not) Beyond the border from Sweden. 🤣 They are all on popcorn request. Some day there might be a poll with European war movies 🤪😜😃

Björn Karlsson

Haven't gotten around to April 9th. But I really like "Shadow in my eye" about the failed british bombing in Copehagen where they accidentally hit a school. And "Land of Mine" is soo good. Nominated for best foreign movie at the 2017 Oscars.

Jan Sørensen

Probably not.

Jan Sørensen

Yeah.... Great ww2 movies from Finland and Japan. I like April 9th 🙂 But non-english movies has no chances in polls 😔😔

Björn Karlsson

Grant was, along with Clark Gable, made of the stuff that made my grandma swoon. The list of leading ladies Grant appeared with is a list of the most famous actresses of the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. “Arsenic and Old Lace”, 30’s screwball comedy. “People Will Talk”, the most unusual story you will ever see. Mature 50’s comedy. “To Catch a Thief”, Hitchcock lighthearted thriller. Grace Kelly and Grant’s chemistry sizzles. “Operation Petticoat”, WWII comedy based on a true story. Also starring Tony Curtis. “Houseboat”, Comedy starring Sophia Loren. “Charade”, a mystery inside an enigma. As Hitchcock as it gets and Hitch had nothing to do with it. Audrey Hepburn dazzles. “Father Goose”, another WWII comedy with Leslie Caron.

You are so right about fast cut editing. Alfred Hitchcock was the “master of suspense”. There wouldn’t be much suspense if all issues were resolved immediately.

Michael and Phyllis Selby

The way movies are written and filmed has changed a lot over the years, the way things are paced and edited are quicker and more efficient at story telling. Modern screenplays follow very similar methods of writing so have a more ‘modern’ feel to them. People nowadays can handle jump cuts, zooming shots, fast paced dialogue because we’ve got used to them over the decades.

Ria Grix

How about throwing some more foreign war movies in the polls.

Jan Sørensen

Eva Marie Saint also features in another brilliant film, On The Waterfront (1954), with Marlon Brando, who won his first Oscar for that film!

JONATHAN REDFERN WILLIAMS

Great to see you enjoy this classic so much, Cassie. Now you will have to tell Carly she should watch it too !! :)

Long-time Sci-Fi Enthusiast

Now you have to watch "Lucky Number Sleven".😃

Christopher Lott

Judy, Judy, Judy.

For a long time, I considered Timecop (1994) to be one of Van Damme's top two movies, alongside John Woo's Hard Target. Recently though, my opinion of it has decreased. It's an enjoyable, decent, legit action/sci-fi movie, but it has too much of a throw-away B-movie feel. In my personal ranking, I'd replace it with either the drama JCVD (2008), or for pure Van Damme fun, Bloodsport (1988).

Happy Hanukkah

But he will most be remembered for his portrayal of J. Howard Marshall.

Btw, Cary Grant had a "Mid-Atlantic" accent, in that it wasn't quite British or American. It was considered prestigious because typically you had to be educated at a fancy boarding school to speak that way; no one spoke it naturally. Grant wasn't from an upper-class background, but he was a Brit who came to America as a teenager, so maybe he really did come by it naturally. He and Katharine Hepburn are considered the classic examples, but she was just an upper-class American. It faded out after the war. I understand there was a "Canadian dainty" accent that was similar.

David Conroy

To Catch a Thief is a great film, a little lightweight but a lot of fun.

David Conroy

More Cary Grant & Hitchcock: To Catch a Thief. Grace Kelly too!

Odd Thomas

I honestly think Time Cop and Universal Solider were generally good sci-fi films.

rakesh

Considering how much you seem to like this one, you really should try 'Dial M for Murder.' 👍🏻♥️😀

'Pappy' Johnston

Another espionage tie-in... Grant's attorney Victor Larrabee is played by Edward Platt- The Chief from "Get Smart". (coincidentally, the Chief's assistant was named Agent Larrabee.)

Bill W

"Quite the RUUUSE!" OMG, I lost it! I love it. I want it in GIF form!

Art of Free Speech

Maybe one day we'll see "The Man Who Knew Too Much" (the 1956 version).

Jeffrey Schmidbauer

I never bought the romance arc in this film. Seemed very forced.

Bill W

still love it when the kid covers his ears before the gunshot

zynjams

When Eve Kendall is about to shoot Thornhill, you can see in the background a little boy covering his ears anticipating the bang.

Jeffrey Schmidbauer

Eva Marie Saint (Eve Kendall) is still living. She recently turned 101 years old.

Jeffrey Schmidbauer

The final shot of the train entering the tunnel is Hitchcock's way of saying their marriage is consummated.

Jeffrey Schmidbauer

Cary Grant's accent comes from his British background. Cary's real name is Archibald Leach.

Jeffrey Schmidbauer

What with all this talk of Vandamm, I will once again attempt to summon up Hard Target (1993). The power of JCVD compels you!

Happy Hanukkah

Being falsely accused and chased for something you did not do was a common Hitchcock theme. Don't be surprised by the variety of Hitchcock films. Rebecca and Notorious {with Cary Grant} are love stories at their core with thrilling events all around the main characters. And yes, Cary Grant had a distinctive voice that only added to his image of being the most suave and cool man ever in the movies.

Bill Bowman

Ive been requesting the Majestic for 2 years now. so i didnt need to push Landaus IMDB page

zynjams

And Rounders, and EdTV

Cole Jennett

Different from other Hitchcock movies. The star power of Cary Grant is on display here. It's clear why he was such a major leading man of his era. I can't peg what his accent is, so I guess it is just his own creation, and it's cool, timelessly cool.

Richard Bourne

Yup, that is a Cassie and Carly "double crying towel feature" if there ever was one.

Bill Maurer

I recommend "Gunga Din" with Grant (1938) and "Odd Man Out" with Mason (1946?).

Tom Holman

Thank you for sharing that! One of my favoriite films -- let alone Hitchcock films!

Judy M. Goodman

Martin Landau was in the Majestic, My favorite Jim Carrey movie

zynjams

Grant and James Mason (Van Damme) were both Englishmen who lived in the US for long periods. Thus their muted accents.

Tom Holman

James Mason (Van Damme) is also from England.

Judy M. Goodman

"Cary Grant was born Archibald Alec Leach on January 18, 1904 in Horfield, Bristol, England, to Elsie Maria (Kingdon) and Elias James Leach, who worked in a factory. " https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000026/bio/?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm

Judy M. Goodman

Oh man... An Affair to Remember is going to have her BAWLING

Alex

Hitchcock also made THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY (1955), which is more comedy than thriller, but there are many thrilling moments.

Judy M. Goodman

I’ve been a Hitchcock fan since my cousin recommended Psycho to me when I was twelve or thirteen. Forty years later and 3 dozen blu rays of his films are proudly displayed in my film collection. One of the best experiences of my life was back in the early 90s when my wife, mother and I toured Universal Studios. They had a wonderful Hitchcock exhibit, including a live recreation of the Psycho shower scene (they showed how each camera angle and accompanying shot was created) and a 3D short film cut of The Birds. Everyone in the small theater ducked when the birds seemed to fly off the screen right into our faces. Finally, they had a Hitchcock museum that you walked thru to exit the building. Great times! PS: Cassie seemed a bit confused as to why they thought that Thornhill was the fictitious spy Kaplan. It’s because he raised his hand to get the waiter’s attention at precisely the same moment that they were paging Kaplan. Seeing this, the baddies naturally assumed he was responding to the page and must, therefore, be Kaplan.

Just Plain Bob

The woman’s intuition line of Leonard’s which threw you off was meant as a (subtle?) hint that Leonard is homosexual and in love with his boss. Obviously, given the time and context this is played quite underhandedly (and in a somewhat sinister way) but it certainly adds to Leonard’s issues with Ms Candle who’s now also a competitor for Vandamme‘s affections. Martin Landau did this a couple of times, as I recall. And films from that time did it, too, as for instance with Stephen Boyd‘s Messala in Ben Hur and, more prominently, Lawrence Olivier‘s Crassus in Spartacus. That it’s usually the bad guys who are the closeted homosexuals, is obviously not a coincidence and very much a sign of the times.

Christoph Wolf

Bringing up baby Arsenic and old lace are two of my favorites

Ben92

Father Goose is another good Cary Grant movie

Michael Scoggins

Leonard was played by Martin Landau, who was a member of the original IMF on the 1960’s TV version of Mission Impossible.

Stephen Malloy

Eva Marie Saint played Tom Hanks mom in the movie "Nothing in Common", which also starred Jackie Gleason in his last film. Pretty much Tom Hanks first chance to show dramatic acting chops... And a really good movie.

Jeff Rogers

"To Catch a Thief" "Philadelphia Story" "An Affair to Remember" "Notorious" "The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer" Add those Cary Grant movies to your list ...

Bill Maurer

Yes it is. Her first.

Mike LL

Your first Cary Grant?

Jeff Rogers
