Romancing the Stone (1984) - Full Reaction

So watching this means that I've watched all of the movies on my dad's first "father's day" poll! This one was fun!! We watched it live and it was fun to get instant answers to some of my questions haha. It had action, comedy, romance, and adventure. Definitely had Indiana Jones vibes although I'm not sure Michael Douglas does it for me like Hans. There is something special about these 80's movies! Hope you guys enjoy :)

Also, sorry for the erratic schedule this week. It's been crazy with everything going on but hopefully we'll return to regular programming shortly!

Romancing the Stone (1984) - Full Reaction

Is it just me or does Kathleen Turner get more beautiful the longer she's in the jungle?

BODY HEAT (1981) [Rotten Tomatoes = 93%] Released three years before Romancing the Stone (1984), an excellent movie w/Kathleen Turner is Body Heat (1981). I developed a crush on her in watching that movie on VHS in the early 80s. Body Heat (1981): -American Film Institute (AFI) top 100 passions (GREATEST LOVE STORIES) all time in American cinema; -AFI top 100 thrills (most exciting movies) all time in American cinema; and -AFI top 100 quotations all time in American cinema (for a quote by the Kathleen Turner character) . Kathleen Turner received a [1] Golden Globe nomination for New Star of the Year in a Motion Picture; and [2] BAFTA nomination for Most Outstanding Newcomer to Leading Film Roles. Body Heat (1981) is an American neo-noir erotic thriller inspired by a 1944 film and 1943 novel. “Made from classic noir ingredients and flavored with a heaping helping of steamy modern spice, ‘Body Heat’ more than lives up to its evocative title.” More graphic and extensive sex scene footage was edited out. "Obviously, there was more graphic footage [initially before editing]. But we felt that less was more."

I just paused the movie for an extra few seconds until Cassie's reactions caught up to the actions. easy peasy.

Kathleen Turner and Kathy Bates should be in a movie together! They are great! Misery and this movie are epic!

This underrated action movie produced by Michael Douglas is actually way better in casting, acting, story, direction, art, localities & script than Indiana Jones Temple of Doom.

Russell Teo

Indiana Jones meets True Lies

Grinznmore

Woof

Grinznmore

Nah, the sequel is pretty forgettable. It can easily be missed.

Aaron Mann

Now the sequel

Jason Mangen

Haha Hans-Olo sounds like a name almost 🙂😉🤣

Björn Karlsson

How about the sequel Jewel of the Nile soon? Turner and Douglas’ chemistry is too good to not watch the sequel. I’m sure for Kathleen Turner folks have already suggested War of the Roses, but for fun, how about Who Framed Roger Rabbit? It’s a fun movie for when you just need something light. Not sure if anyone let you know, but the publisher is Holland Taylor who you probably recognized from Legally Blonde. You had asked about Turner’s short film career. She got sick with RA and was in a ton of pain. The pain and the drugs messed with her appearance a bit and made it difficult for her to work. That combined with how Hollywood tends to sideline aging actresses and not offer up good roles for actresses over a certain age made her career dry up. It’s sad because she is very good.

Tinkerbell

I watched it on Disney +

Dean Holt

Cassie has seen quite a few of these. I think No Way Out will definitely be watched as its Costner (and a great movie). I hope she watches Downfall as it's superb. The originator of many memes, but truly an amazing picture, and it's been ages since she's done a foreign flick. The Thing is on there as well! I feel the universe is telling her this movie cannot be avoided and must be watched!

rakeshldn

My fav Kathleen Turner movie I'd like to see a reaction to = Body Heat (1981), a sizzling modern film noir with William Hurt, and the chemistry is hot between Kathleen and William! And the movie is on Christopher McQuarrie's Letterbxd list he told you about last night, "Tonight's Recomended Viewing": https://letterboxd.com/chrismcquarrie/list/tonights-recommended-viewing/

Mike LL

LOL. I'm very glad you can't hear me saying Hans Olo in a Norwegian accent.

Erik Daniel

You may be right 🙂🙂🙂

William Burnham

It’s a great film but I’m not sure she’d like it.

My favorite story related to "Romancing the Stone" has to do with the fact that this was the first collaboration between Robert Zemeckis and music composer Alan Silvestri. This was also a movie that had to succeed in order for Zemeckis's subsequent movie, "Back to the Future," to be greenlit. Anyway, Silvestri's score for "Romancing the Stone" was mostly synth-pop. But I guess because Zemeckis felt comfortable working with him, he asked Silvestri to also write the score for "Back to the Future." The thing is, Steven Spielberg (who was an executive producer for BTTF) absolutely hated the music for "Romancing." He was adamantly opposed to this very 80s pop sound, and felt that a more grand John Williams-esque score was appropriate for BTTF. (To be fair to Spielberg, there was no reason to believe that Silvestri was up to such a task, since he'd never really done a score in that grand classical style before.) So Zemeckis basically had Silvestri write the BTTF score in secret. After BTTF was mostly done, they had a test screening with both Zemeckis and Spielberg in attendance. Often for test screenings, it's common for the music to be just a "temp track," snippets of score lifted from other movies because the actual film score hasn't been written yet. And so Spielberg assumed that the music in this BTTF screening was a temp score. At one point he leaned over the Zemeckis and said something like, "Now this is the type of music that should be in your movie." It turned out that it was actually some of the score that Silvestri had already written for BTTF. Silvestri's first real attempt at doing a big "John Williams-like" score, and he knocked it out of the park with one of the most iconic movie scores of all time.

Great reaction and movie. I can't remember if the sequel (Jewel Of The Nile) was as good as this one, but you should check out "Serial Mom" if you like her in this. Pretty funny.

FischerMax98

There isn't much for me to say that I haven't already said when I participated in the watch along you did (Popcorn Butter & Salt Live Stream) lol! This movie is so underrated and fun, I'm really glad that you enjoyed watching it, I knew the romance stuff would get you going, knowing how much of a sucker you are for things romance lol! I like this movie because of the action/adventure Indiana Jones vibe this movie gives off, plus this was how I became a fan of Michael Douglas! He certainly takes after his father, the late great legendary Kirk Douglas, he lived to the age of 103😱 Plus I recommend one of my all time favorite films his dad did, Walt Disney's adaptation of Jules Verne's novel: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, it's great and it was the first movie I memorized as kid! There's a lot of movies Michael Douglas has done that I recommend, one of which he says, as I can recall, was his favorite movie he's done throughout his career: Falling Down! I'm a little surprised you didn't recognize the actress who played her sister, Mary Ellen Trainor, she's been in a lot of movies that you've reacted to and I'm sure ones you have seen, she was the mom in The Goonies, she made a brief appearance in Ghostbusters 2, she was the news anchor in Die Hard, she is in all Lethal Weapon movies, she's done a lot! Shockingly, I had no idea of this, she was married to the director, Robert Zemeckis, during the filming of this movie, unfortunately she's no longer with us, she passed away from pancreatic cancer at the age of 62, so young very sad!😢 Anyway, really enjoyed watching this reaction "again" lol😂 Since I already did the live watch along! Once again, thank you and Carly so much for cheering me up yesterday after a bad day at work, you two looked so beautiful and amazing in your dresses at the MI7 premiere, I literally think my heart skipped a beat lol! You and Carly are the absolute best & sweetest, love ya'll, love and support always, safe travels back home and as always [snaps fingers & winks] stay classy Cassie🥰😁😉👍🌹

Wesley White

I actually loved this and wanted another one!!!

Randolph Tirazona

Peggy Sue Got Married - that is the movie you should watch to see more Kathleen Turner. I think you would like it.

Jay

Haha well... That's also a good movie. The whole "The girl" trilogy is great 😃😉

Björn Karlsson

Another good action comedy starring Kathleen Turner and Dennis Quaid is Undercover Blues (1993).

Timothy Roberts

Body Heat, William Hurt and Kathleen Turner is an excellent film noir 😊😊😊

William Burnham

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? (hehehe)

Mike Lemon

Hans Olo sounds norwegian 🤣🤣🤣

Björn Karlsson

It's time for you-know-what-movie from Sweden 🫠😉😃

Björn Karlsson

It's her making fun of herself. She once referred to Han Solo as "Han...s?" and has since used that as a name for Hansison ... uh, Harrison Ford.

Anna Komnena

Now you need to watch "War of the Roses"

JohnB

If you look at Cassie's description for every video she includes a link "Find your own copy to follow along with". This brings you to Justwatch, com, a free service that shows you all the places to rent, buy or stream the movie.

Alan Kobb

Cassie, it's time for the original Mad Max trilogy with Mel Gibson. These were fun summer drive-in movies back in the day. Carly should take a pass though.

Mike Lemon

Where the heck is this movie? I can’t find it anywhere.

Michael Lynch

"Like a romance novel." Perfect!

David Conroy

I wouldn't call Colton a conn artist, more and opportunist. The sequel "jewel of the nile" is pretty good, not on the same level but still a good one. They way you liked this one, I think you would like Captain Ron.

Bubba Fett

Tonight's the night isn't it? Or wait was it yesterday? Movie premier on a Monday just sounds weird, but either way I hope you guys have, or had, the time of your life. Hans Olo for life.

Erik Daniel

Really think Cocktail is one of his more underrated films and with it having a love story in I think both of them should watch it.

Dean Holt

I'm in for Uncle Buck,Cocktail & Rain Man..

Celeste McAllister

Yeah it is a very funny movie.

Dean Holt

She's ahead of the curve that's all.. :)

Celeste McAllister

Just heads up if you watch it, her reaction is 5 seconds or more ahead of her sync video.

Reed James

Falling Down is an absolute must watch. Loads to unpack and sooooo relatable!

David Collins

The great outdoors probably my favorite of all his movies.

Bubba Fett

Can’t wait to watch your reaction to this classic. Growing up in the 80s was incredible regarding the films that came out. Just an idea but you could have a 80s week, do a poll and watch the top 3. Or watch 3 movies from one actor. Eddie Murphy - Beverly Hills Cop 1&2 & Coming to America. John Candy - Brewsters Millions, Uncle Buck & The Great Outdoors. Tom Cruise - Risky Business, The Color of Money, Cocktail or Rain Man. Clint Eastwood - Firefox, Heartbreak Ridge & Pale Rider. Schwarzenegger - Commando, Twins & The Running Man Stallone - Rambo First Blood, Tango & Cash & Cliffhanger (it is a 90s film but it’s one of his best).

Dean Holt

A young 80's Kathleen Turner & Michael Douglas🔥He is the son of veteran leading man Kirk Douglas(Spartacus),she was noted for her million dollar legs and sultry voice, she gave 'Jessica Rabbit' a hot cartoon sex appeal..the 80's had some great movies for sure 'Out of Africa' with Robert Redford & Meryl Streep for one,'Passage to India','Driving Miss Daisy' and many more!

Celeste McAllister

Yep he had a strong couple of decades in the 80s and 90s also Falling Down ( my favorite) and The Game. Gotta also say The Streets of San Fransisco. has one of the best funkiest theme tunes ever! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mijBMpnS3a4

rakeshldn

Fun, charming, happy... Cassie's dad is a romantic!

Terry Yelmene

I think maybe she had a Freudian slip and was thinking of Han Solo.

WastedPo

“Hans”?😝

Bryan Erickson

“I’m not bad, I’m just drawn that way” Jessica Rabbit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmTbpyjt6DA

Powers209

Same here.

Brent Petty

Maybe it was all on my end somehow, but it seemed Cassie's reactions were at least a good 5 seconds ahead of what was showing the time stamp of the movie to be. I wonder if the live reaction maybe had something to do with it. Usually it's spot on.

Shawn Kildal

Now you need to watch the sequel "The Jewel of the Nile". Also try out "War of the Roses", also starring the same trio.

David Nesbit

Great time watching it along with you. Have a great time in NYC & represent your fans !!! PS: "The Searchers"

Bill Maurer

This was the movie that really put Michael Douglas on the map as far as Hollywood movies go. I remember him in the 70's in the TV series The Streets of San Fransisco. He reached omega level of stardom in 1987 when he starred in Fatal Attraction and Wall Street both that same year.

Shawn Kildal

Looking forward to watching this reaction - it's such a fun movie. I first saw it in the theater when I was a kid, because my friend's dad won free tickets to the premier. It was so much better than expected and I've watched it a few times throughout the years.

Johnny

Yes! Was waiting for this one, it was one of my mom's favorites and I always loved it too.
