Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) - Full Reaction

Well this was a trippity trip tripper ha! Ok, so crazy and bizarre, I loved the messages of it, I actually would have enjoyed just a movie about them and their story even without all the multiverse stuff. The crazy stuff didn't exactly make me like it more or less I don't think, I just loved the characters. The jump pads did make me LOL though.

Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) - Full Reaction

Comments

I love this movie more and more every time I watch it. I'm so glad you enjoyed it too! There's a great video essay called "Everyone Everywhere Needs Waymond Wang" that's worth checking out afterwards.

Sean Landorf

I love this movie, it’s one of my favorite movies and yes, it did make me tear up. It makes sense it won so many awards. It had so many messages, my favorite was that love does not always equal acceptance. Just because the mom loved her daughter, she did not actually accept her until the end of the movie, and Joy knew that. One thing I agree 100% that this movie won was best editing. That person should have gotten a bonus for the editing, it did not look easy. I got Patreon just for this full reaction. I cannot understate how great the writing, editing, directing, and acting is in this movie. I enjoyed your reaction to this movie. Also, you look like you’re around my age, so do you remember the song Absolutely (Story of a Girl) by Nine Days? That song was sprinkled throughout the movie, even Waymond said some of the lyrics. I think Jobu/Joy was so depressed that she cried a river and drowned the multiverse.

Eddie

Haven't watched this reaction. Just wanted to say I found the intro particularly funny today.

My_Cousin_Mose

Not a bad film, but does not compare to CTHD, imo. Also Heroic Trio is only streaming on Criterion Channel.

Richard Maurer

Just say no to dubbed!

Richard Maurer

As long as it isn't the dubbed version!

Dazman

I mean, you are allowed to not like a movie, but EEAAO is objectively a well liked and well regarded movie. Rotten Tomatoes has an 80% favorable audience reaction with more than 10,000 votes.

Robert Haynes

I prefer her in The Heroic Trio (1993).

Mike Lemon

I second the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) recommendation above. I believe the director once called it "Jane Austen with martial arts".

David Conroy

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a excellent suggestion.

Richard Maurer

I agree with WastedPo's comment above 100%. I would add that some people don't seem to know the difference between a bad movie and a movie they personally don't like. Claiming a well made movie is bad just because you personally don't like or understand it says more about the person saying it than the movie itself.

Richard Maurer

The best way to watch this movie is just let it flow. Don't try examine it too closely and question it, accept it for what it is.

Richard Maurer

Another great Michelle Yeoh (Evelyn) movie is Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - hint, hint. And if Carly thinks Harry Potter is better than Lord of the Rings she really needs to re-examine her life choices ;-)

Richard Maurer

Makes me cry every(thingeverywhereallatonce) time.

Steve Mercier

Well, I didn't use the term "political," because that implies something different from what I meant. Political implies that the voters didn't actually like the movie and were just cynically engaging in cronyism, or giving into social pressures, etc. When I said that they could be, like all people, influenced by buzz and trends--I meant it's possible they genuinely liked the movie and felt it should win and were swept up in the goodwill many were feeling at the time. Yeah, there are Youtube channels that tear movies down movies after the fact, but again--those types of videos often pander to trends as well; they're just following trends (i.e. backlash) that have formed a little bit later after the movie came out. Also, there's a psychological response that happens regarding almost every movie that wins Best Picture. People perceive the win as if an authority figure is demanding that they "have to" love the movie. And so out of resentment, they declare the movie crap and overrated. It almost doesn't matter what movie ultimately wins, because people are going to have a similar resentment response to the Best Picture winner by default.

WastedPo

It is certainly the most unique movie I've seen in a while. Wasn't sure how this reaction would turn out, but I'm glad you mostly liked it, and I really enjoyed the reaction. For me it took two viewings to really appreciate this movie. The first time all the bizarre, crazy and super creative aspects partly distracted me and caught me by surprise. I really needed a second viewing, knowing what to expect, to really focus on the deeper messages and its emotional core. And I agree there is one. The way I see it the movie is mainly about family, acceptance, kindness and conveying the message that you can always find the good moments in life, they just sprinkled everything on top of it. PS: also, didn't recognize Jamie Lee Curtis until the third act for the first time. 🤦

Gábor Árki

Interesting. Nearly everyone in *my* social circle loves this movie! And I can see sound, objective reasons why EEAAO won all the Oscars it did with possibly one exception. If I was voting, I would have given Best Support Actress to Stephanie Hsu instead of Jamie Lee Curtis, but this is a case where sentimentality and practicality played a role. This might have been the last time that (much loved) Jamie Lee would be nominated for an Oscar, while young Stephanie Hsu will probably have many opportunities for an Oscar win in her career.

Michael Gilbrook

Very nice. Didn't even realize it was Hachi. Thought it was a bear but immmmm sooo blind 😁

David Freese

thats hachi, my daughter switched them haha

Cassie

Thanks, Gryff! Lesson learned! I appreciate you being here. Still a weird movie. Not for everyone obviously.

Philip Alan

I rather spent 20hrs to re-watch all the WuXia classics from 1960-70s from Hu King. Actually watched 4K restored Touch of Zen & Dragon Inn, instead of this crap & the other crap (Quantum of Solace).

Russell Teo

Me2, I lasted 5min. Tried 5x. Really crap.

Russell Teo

WastedPo is correct. The Oscars are political, not rigged, so the wins reflect the votes of the members, but those members are often influenced by factors beyond whether or not the movie is good. (The Golden Globes are the awards show legendarily known as being hugely influenced by money.) I also, as another Asian person, don't think it matters whether or not you're Asian in terms of liking or not liking this.

Tyler Foster

Didn't mean to suggest it's kids-friendly. I agree there is some tasteless stuff in there. But then you have things like the silly futuristic gadgets (the stuff in the van) and a character, the evil IRS lady, who could easily be the villain of a childrens book.

Grad

Which part, the butt plugs, the violence and gore, or the overt sexuality? You have to be almost brain dead to associate this with kids in any way.

Gryff

Passed is wrong, flat out. Have some character and own your mistake instead of trying to weasel out of it to save face on a random message board. Also judging by your stunted vocabulary, overuse, and incorrect use of quotations and random capitalization, I don't think you're actually smart enough to understand this high concept movie. But I'm sure you'll get PASSED this. ;)

Gryff

Love is eternal and maybe it could be “everything, everywhere all at once?” Is that the message of the movie? I liked it, but yeah… trippy! (rocks with subtitles is a first) LOL This movie reminds me of a song from Stevie Wonder. On the album “Songs in the Key of Life,” which is love letter put to music, one song is called, “As” and the lyrics of that song is similar to the theme of this movie.

Ike

I'm just saying, no one that I know likes this movie. Yeah you could say that's just anecdotal evidence but I have a feeling that there is a lot of people out there that just didn't like it either but are keeping quiet. Because we're in an environment where if you voice a negative opinion about a movie like this, "certain words" are thrown around. And you know what words I mean. So people are being kind. This is the grace period, as it were. I don't think it's a "great" movie on pretty much any level (Good, maybe. Creative, certainly. Great? No). Certainly not worthy of so many top awards. I mean, really? People got caught up in a wave of sentimentality. This is going to be like "The Artist." No one's going to care about it in 8 to 10 years, let alone 30, 40, 50....

Caomhan84

It sounds like this is meant to be on the Bond reaction. Did you comment on the wrong thing? Or am I just really out of it?

Raven Dark

But for you, I will start writing "past"! We will be fine now. :)

Philip Alan

"Both variants "get passed" or "get past" are correct since they have different meanings To “get PAST” means to overcome or walk PAST something. To “get PASSED” can mean to be denied an opportunity or to physically be PASSED from one place to another. Both PAST and PASSED can be used for motion and time."

Philip Alan

Look, just because you didn't care for it doesn't mean the win was "rigged." The Oscar voters are people, and they get swept up in sentiment and buzz like everyone does. Yes, maybe years from now the content creators who make their money by deconstructing everything on Youtube will tear it down. (No doubt "CinemaSins" already has a video about it.) However, the voters don't vote based on hindsight; they vote in the present.

WastedPo

"a fellow asian"

Carol_White

past and passed are two different words.

Carol_White

I truly tried tried tried tried to watch this with you and I couldn't get passed the first 12 mins. Glad you enjoyed it? Onto the next!

Philip Alan

It wasn't a bad movie but it wasn't the best movie of the year, at all. I personally put RRR over EEAaO.

Adino1

Agree, there are far more deserving OSCARS contenders. The Academy is long rigged

Russell Teo

I have a feeling that *many* people feel this way, but it's too early to say it. People want to be polite because of the Oscar and because of everyone's affection for Ke Huy Quan. But I really think this is one of those movies that is not going to be well remembered... And in a few years we're going to see video deconstructions of it on YouTube where people are like "Let's be honest....EEAAO wasn't really that good, was it?" 😂

Caomhan84

Glad you watched this-this movie has been one of my favorite new movies and it was one that really surprised me. I like to tell people to watch it twice before forming an opinion-once to get over the ‘what the heck’ reaction and another to focus on the story. It always makes me tear up when Waymond starts talking about being kind. It leaves me emotional every time I watch. All the awards and accolades this film and its stellar cast are well deserved. It’s about time Hollywood noticed how amazing Yeoh is and Ke Huy Quan really helped give this film its heart. How about more Michelle Yeoh? I imagine someone has already suggested Supercop. How about Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon?

Tinkerbell

I SAY THIS AS A FELLOW ASIAN. THIS MOVIE IS REALLY OVERRATED CRAP

Russell Teo

I am 58 years old and I saw a lot of the bond movies when they 1st came out. He is the best James Bond. When the opening theme song starts in the next 3, guess who is singing. It has always been kind of an honor to sing it!

John G

Daniel Kwan, the director thought it would be a good character point to have Evelyn suffer from undiagnosed ADHD (which is really well represented in the movie). As part of his research into ADHD, he came to the realization that HE had undiagnosed ADHD. Tomorrow, I am going in for my assessment of ADHD. I am 43, and just thought I was really bad at all the stuff everyone else finds so easy. Anyway, I really love this movie, I love how "nothing matters" ends up being "so we make our own choices as to what matters".

Robert Haynes

I agree with Cassie's written comments. Don't overemphasize "the crazy stuff" about this movie because for many people this is not that crazy, depending on their past movie-going experience. Also what's really good about the movie isn't "the crazy stuff" so don't set the wrong expectations for someone who hasn't seen it, this is why people get disappointed sad face.

Mannygogou

It's so jam-packed it takes at least two viewings to fully appreciate. First watch is sensory overload and second is more emotional

Odd Thomas

Also not a huge fan of the style and production design. Some of it made me feel like I was watching a kids show.

Grad

I'm with Carly on this one. I think I prefer a movie that handles its themes and messages with just a tiny bit more subtlety.

Grad

Thank you for doing this one, I know it's not for everyone. Something about this movie always gets to me. I love it.

aarswft

The writing works on many levels. family drama, mental health, existentialism, scifi, comedy, martial arts, morality... it goes on. The title is extremely apt as it overwhelms most people with how much it covers. One of the stronger pieces of writing is recontextualising words: "nothing matters". The other strong plot development is that fighting Joy was a red herring. Painting her as an evil is many peoples instinct. Resisting something you don't understand. I found that plot gratifying in that there was no enemy. Life is difficult as it is without an external "enemy". And my personal favorite is not using "Love" in the climactic scene with Joy. The word "love" sometimes detracts from scenes and pulls audiences out of the movie and Evelyn has established how much trouble she has with expressing. There are also a ton of cinematic nods to other movies; Matrix, Ratatouille, Jackie Chan... but what i was most delighted with was the "In the mood for love" sequence with movie star Evelyn. It caught its essence beautifully.

Wu Sha Ling

Count me as one of the few that just didn't like this one much. On to more movies though! :D

Damon

I loved your reaction to this. As you said great messages. Awesome job Cassie as always. Thank you for all that you do.

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

I tried twice to get through it. The first time I got 65 minutes in and the second time I got about 80 minutes in. I just can't with this movie.😂 And I love Ke Huy Quan.

Caomhan84

My goodness this Movie is just perfect. So emotional 🌞👌

Padraig Glennon

I love the concept of this movie. A family drama is standard fare for a filmmaker. Of course a filmmaker would want as a high a stakes as possible for their drama. Having the main character discover that her relationship with her family will decide the fate of the entire multiverse is raising the stakes for your drama as high as they could possibly be.

Mike LL

This movie has a crazy number of callbacks to other films like the Neo duckwalk through the cubicles from The Matrix. I think another notable one was a similar headset audio distortion that Chris Tucker had in The Fifth Element which Joy had when she was wearing the teddy bear sweater.

Jim Frykman

When you pop all your knuckles and then toes, it's like you're trying to reassure yourself you don't have hot dog fingers.

Tyler Foster

I've been waiting for this one. I hope you enjoyed this movie as much as I did.

Yaisu

My favorite little joke in this movie is that when Waymond describes Jobu's evil, he says "Your clothes never wear as well the next day. Your hair never falls in quite the same way." These are the lyrics to the song "Absolutely (Story of a Girl)" by Nine Days. Not only do the lyrics of the full song echo the plot of the movie, but when Evelyn jumps to the universe where she and Waymond are discussing the divorce papers in the van, the maid universe, and the hibachi chef universe, you can hear alternate universe versions of the song that were specially recorded by the Nine Days lead singer that relate to each universe. I also think it's brilliant that the white eye with black googly bit is the yin to the yang of the black bagel with white center. As an additional nod to Pixar, Raccocoonie is voiced by Randy Newman, the singer/songwriter of "You've Got a Friend in Me."

Tyler Foster

need to watch this one again; somewhere about halfway through I got lost…after it won the Oscar I said I’d try again

JL_83

This is a perfect Segway to watch police story with Jackie Chan. Considering Michelle yeoh is his partner in the third movie you should watch the trilogy with Carly it’s an action comedy at its finest

Night King01

Sometimes they get it right!

Jim Frykman

i do love this film. a very well deserved oscar winner for best film.

Chip MC

Where's baby Stuart??? I saw a bear take his place😭

David Freese
