ANYWAYS Kind of got me on a natural disaster movie craving thingy so here we are! Also my little girl calls Tornadoes-Tormadoes so I'm just in this element right now.
Thanks so much for your suggestions for this poll! I have already seen before the channel-San Andreas, The Impossible (absolutely wrecked me) The Day After Tomorrow, Everest, Sully, Contagion and Outbreak (nightmares for years about this one) I still do not know if I have seen Armageddon or not, I am not including it in the poll!
After researching some of these choices, I think I also want to do a "Survivors Poll" soon, I have seen The Martian and 127 hours and loved them both-things like the grey, the revenant, Alive, rescue dawn-any insight you guys have for this?

I remember being at summer camp, so excited and other campers and counselors talking about it. Saw it in theaters the weekend after I got back and was like WTF!! UGH

2023-06-11 01:49:55 +0000 UTCThe Poseidon Adventure really needs to be considered, even though it is (sadly) currently fourth on the list. While not comedic, it is a _wonderful_ popcorn flick. The plot is simple, the sets and effects are great considering when it was made, and the actors are hammy when they need to be! And the hit song that came from it, _The Morning After_ is perfect 70s soft rock schlocky! I’m glad _The Towering Inferno_ is low on the list… it’s too sad to watch now.

Of the two from the 70s, I think so far the votes reflect my opinion that Inferno is *horribly* dated, while Poseidon Adventure has held up well over the decades (it's dated too, ofc). Of the other 3 I've seen, to me Dante's Peak was okay and Perfect Storm I did not like at all (sorry--it was Clooney's fault). Deep Impact, for all its flaws, is my fave of the five I have seen. Maybe it's Morgan? idk... (it's not young Mr. Frodo. lol) Edit: interesting that the 5 I've seen are the top 5... I only voted for 3 of 'em.

2023-06-08 01:44:23 +0000 UTCI had the privilege of meeting the Executive Officer of the USCGC Tamaroa, which was the Coast Guard cutter shown in the movie, who was stationed on the ship during the storm. They were involved in rescuing the sailboat shown in the movie as well as rescuing crew members from the downed New York Air National Guard Helicopter. The movie definitely altered a few things but still manage to capture the magnitude of the storm and the dedication of the crew members during the search and rescue.

Very true to the story and will keep you on edge of your seat the whole movie. Great cast of Chris Pine, Casey Affleck, Eric Bana and Ben Foster. USCG study in mission and courage at sea. Cassie will also love the love story in this one.

Airport is #7 on my request list, and a dream reaction it would be for me. It did indeed start the disaster movie cycle of the 1970's and laid the template for all those great '70's disaster movies: A big budget, a large group of A list stars, and one elder Golden Era movie star (in Airport it was Helen Hayes, who appeared in some silent movies and was a star in the 1930's).

The underlying premise of a disaster movie is that "something big" is happening... and so they have to balance the "epicness" of the disaster with maybe the human struggle. Also sometimes the movie is "in fun" of the disaster premise but is it dumb fun or smart fun?

Every launch in that movie, (with the exception of the one that went high order and blew up...that was CGI), were made from footage of United Launch Alliance launchs from either Vandenberg Air Force Base California or Cape Canaveral Florida... AND....I worked on, and crawled around inside of, every single one of them. (In case I never mentioned it, I'm a retired Aerospace Launch Vehicle Inspector.) Hope you enjoyed that movie as well. 👍🏻🙂

So underneath each movie there's genre descriptions. For example Romance. You could then write down the top 10 or 20 movies that have Romance in the description underneath and draw 1 out to watch. It would cover a lot of genre's and probably the first 2 or 3 pages. Just an idea for Cassie to have some Romance without sticking strictly to Rom Coms to find it.

2023-06-06 19:58:49 +0000 UTCI know Dr. Strangelove was suggested as a war movie but I think it’s more accurately described as a disaster movie - maybe not a “natural” disaster but then neither are most of the movies on this list. Speaking of nukes, I also think you would enjoy War Games, Fail/Safe and The China Syndrome. I saw someone else recommend Deliverance as a survivor movie - it’s great but very disturbing. I would instead recommend Moon (which as a Sam Rockwell fan I think you would love) or Cast Away. For that matter, it could be argued that 2001: A Space Odyssey is both a disaster and a survivor movie - you will get impatient with it, and it really should be seen on a theater screen, but it’s so iconic that watching it is as vital to your cinematic education as The Godfather and Star Wars. Anyway on this list I will recommend Towering Inferno because you will be entertained.

Rescue Dawn is a hard watch being a Vietnam POW movie. I suggest putting POW movies to a separate poll, maybe for a themed WMW. Some additional, less known nominations: THE EDGE (1997) Surviving the Alaskan wilderness with Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin. WHITE SQUALL (1996) Surviving an ill-fated sailing voyage with Jeff Bridges. THE FINEST HOURS (2016) Based on a true story, a daring rescue attempt of a pair of oil tankers during a blizzard in 1952. (Not sure if it's a true fit for survival movie, it is probably half survival half natural disaster movie. But it would surely make for a great C&C reaction)

Honestly, if you didn't watch any of these, you'd be just fine, LOL! I don't know if I dreamed this but I always thought "The Day After Tomorrow" was intended as a spiritual sequel that dealt with a potential catastrophe resulting from extreme climate change while the original film dealt with the after effects of a nuclear war. Anyways, I searched for a bit but I couldn't find any interviews or articles confirming this, but if it weren't true that's one hell of a coincidence in movie titles lol EDIT: I'm really pulling for The Towering Inferno!! Deepwater Horizon, The Perfect Storm, Only the Brave, and Thirteen Lives aren't fun films because people actually lost their lives. They are good films because they are true, but I don't watch to see how many ways people can get killed off. They are Survivor films. However all the others are fiction and made for the guilty pleasure of watching people endure the disaster and see who will live and who will die. The spectacle of the disaster is why I watch them.

2023-06-06 19:06:43 +0000 UTCIt's hard to keep track of everything you've seen, so maybe you've seen these, but there's a couple good Tom Hanks movies for your survivor poll: Cast Away, Apollo 13 and Captain Phillips. I'd also suggest The Edge, Into the Wild, Touching the Void, Everest, Open Water, and the excellent Steven Spielberg WWII epic, Empire of the Sun. This might not qualify, but I'd also suggest First Blood (the first Rambo movie), which is an excellent film and is a different kind of survivor film.

Sadly I don’t think it will win many polls NOT because it’s a bad movie but simply because it’s not as well known as many of the other disaster movies. But it is definitely a perfect movie reaction for you and your sister and it is based on a true story.

The Posiden Adventure has Gene Hackman! Two classics and one based on a true life story. I liked the Perfect Storm but I don't think Cassie will because of [spoiler]. 2023-06-06 18:58:24 +0000 UTCOne I think you'd really like: GREENLAND, with Gerard Butler. It's only a few years old and is akin to DEEP IMPACT and ARMAGEDDON in terms of premise. The difference is that the film focuses exclusively on Butler and his family rather than being omniscient...you only have the information that they have. It's one of the 'good' Butler films and has a great emotional journey to carry you along. A sequel is in the works too.

Both of them represent the apex of the 70s disaster films and are rightly considered to be classics. Of the more recent films, I highly recommend ONLY THE BRAVE. That was directed by the guy who did TOP GUN: MAVERICK and provides a true emotional journey along with the disaster scenes. Excellent movie.

That being said I know realistically it won't win the poll, so maybe another time. I would gladly take Deep Impact in the meantime though, it is a good one!
