The Magnificent Seven (2016) - Full Reaction

Well that wraps up Sevens Week! Ok I really enjoyed the modern take on this story and I found myself connecting more easily to these characters, do you think that's because I knew the actors already or the story? I love this "trope" of defending those who can't defend themselves and Denzel and Ethan Hawke were especially great! Hope you guys enjoyed following along!

The Magnificent Seven (2016) - Full Reaction

Comments

This version is my favorite. But they all are built on the previous version, so there are no bad ones. The only negative I have on this is it took them over 2 hours before they played the theme song. Are you kidding me?!

crazyivan

first time Ive watched this version, it was fantastic

zynjams

The other versions were action movies with unexpected depths of meaning. This is a simple, good-time romp, and there's nothing wrong with that. The only real problem is that calling it THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN invites comparison to the other versions. Many things that were unspoken or ambiguous in the others are made explicit in this one. That includes the ending. In the others, the Seven receive little gratitude--no more than they expected. And I think it's a valuable reminder. We do right because it is right, whether our sacrifices are appreciated or not. Stories like that meet certain emotional needs that other, more conventionally satisfying stories can't seem to touch. One aspect I preferred in the 1960 version was Calvera. Though he's definitely the bad guy, it's easy to see his point-of-view. He thinks that he and the Seven are the same kind of people, and it truly shocks him when they come back to the village to do the right thing. Of course, it's apples and oranges. Calvera was constantly on the run, scrounging food for his men, and Bogue is a land-hungry robber-baron. It makes sense, it's just a little disappointing for me. Old movies are not inherently better than new movies. At the same time, it's not true that we've "perfected" movie-making, and everything made before the 1990s was just a stepping-stone toward this modern summit. That's one reason I love this channel--often, Cassie is pleasantly surprised at how well the older movies hold up. I look forward to the next one landing better for her.

You don't have the be hesitant to keep it real. This one is clearly better than the old ones. People have too much nostalgia attached to the old ones to give remakes a true chance. There's not a single thing better about the old ones over this one. It's like preferring watching NBA players from the 50s over the much better players today.

After a bullet it fired it has likely deformed and could not be used again since most firearms have tight tolerances on bullet size. Plus by then they used cartridges(bullet, powder, and primer all encases in the brass) they would need reloading equipment to reload the bullets. If they gathered the shot bullets they could melt down the lead then pore the liquid metal into the shapes need then reuse the shot bullets but it would take too much time for something like that. Plus it takes away from the drama of them running low on ammo.

John Cohen

You can collect the bullets after you fire them, but you need to wash them in soapy water before loading them into the rifle 💁‍♀️

John Cranberry

She's already seen it.

Brent Petty

You think they are ready for that?

John P Tucker

I feel the same. I don't dislike it just slightly missed the target for me and consider it an okay movie. But I give them credit for not trying to create a near identical remake but instead decided to tell a similar but separate story with some homage to the originals.

Gábor Árki

I really think the perfect wrap up to this “Seven Week” would be Cassie and Carly watching the movie Seven with Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman.

Brian Wegner

It's an ok movie. Not bad but not very memorable in itself. Denzel didn't really get much to do, which was disappointing, and Pratt kinda stole the film (deservedly, I admit)

Odd Thomas

I love how Faraday gets to reuse the “So Far So Good” joke from the Original, and then turns it into his Mantra. And kind of side note. If anyone is interested, here is Chris Pratt doing one of the Coolest Card Tricks I have Ever Seen. https://youtu.be/vXcFGgwP1J4

Larry Darrell

No need to apologize or justify liking this version the most Cassie. You are entitled to your opinion. If I’m honest. While I enjoyed aspects of the other two films, this one is probably my favorite as well. Nice reaction Cassie!

Robert da Spruce

A Bug's Life is actually more like The Three Amigos than this. And The Three Amigos is a comedic take on The Magnificent Seven. You should watch The Three Amigos. Steve Martin, Martin Short, Chevy Chase. Classic.

Zachary Carter

My favorite line in this is one Faraday says "Who here fought in the war of northern aggression?" It says so much about his character in one line. He's a southern, a veteran of the civil war, & fought for southern independence. Great line that goes missed by most but picked up if you know American history.

Snapjaw

I get why you like this version best. For me, it's easily the weakest rendition of this story, but I didn't dislike it. I'd put it in the category of remakes that aren't great, but aren't bad either (like the remake of MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE, also with Denzel). I'm just glad they kept the original Elmer Bernstein theme over the end credits.

Stick Figure Studios

I believe this was filmed in AZ, NM, CO and mainly Louisiana. A more recent Western I can't recommend enough is "The Salvation". Great Western. Oh \yeah "Wedo" means White guy/White boy.

Ryan Towell

2nd one was for me because it had Steve McQueen in it, who was a Marine..lol But I did like this latest version, with a good store line. Can't wait until you do a John Wayne western movie

JarHead0351

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The Magnificent Seven wasn't broke. Nuff said.

Michael Weiner

Really need a John Wayne Western Poll. I'd vote for True Grit, The Shootist, Big Jake, McClintock, Sons of Katie Elder, and Chisom.

CG Shunk

She's seen the Jeff Bridges one so thatight work on a poll for the original

David Freese

It may have been mentioned already, but it just occurred to me as well; but another original and remake collection would be the True Grit movies. The original with John Wayne and the remake with Jeff Bridges. And both excellent in my opinion

Jared Wiltshire

No madness here; some remakes do a very good job... I can count those on one hand, yet some are very good. This was one of them. As to other remakes... Psycho? Well, I would prefer a reaction to Psycho II with Anthony Perkins first. Let's just put it that way. Looking forward to more reactions, Thank you Cassie.

Michael Labs

I was personally blown away by all the biblical imagery. At the beginning, Bogue actually brings in a jar of “Mother” Earth to bear witness to his ruthless destruction of the Lord’s alter, the Lord’s house, and the Lord’s people. (In Numbers 16, Moses calls the Earth "Her" and “She”; later the apostle Paul calls the Earth our Old Mother and New Jerusalem our New Mother.) Then later, right before the final fight they rededicate the Church and the Alter with worship and thanksgiving. Yes, I think it would be fair to say that this is my new favorite movie. (and not just my favorite 7.)

Uncle Phoenix

I really loved Gary Cooper’s monologue about President Grant in the original.

Uncle Phoenix

Wow, Yojimbo vs Fist Full of Dollars vs Last Man Standing. That would be awesome. Love all three.

Uncle Phoenix

You'd be surprised how many people in real life have horrible trigger discipline, which for those who don't know is the habit of KEEPING YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER when you are just holding the weapon and walking around, until you are ready to safely shoot the target. Having your finger on the trigger all the time like that can lead to an accidental discharge like the guy in the movie whos rifle just 'went off' when they were trying to teach the townsfolk to shoot and Ethan Hawk's character said "That's the second time for you! Go make me some eggs!" I actually KNOW someone who does this, personally. I have a buddy that can NOT get the concept of trigger discipline through his head so I refuse to even go to the range with him any more much less handle ANY of my firearms, as he is UNSAFE!

'Pappy' Johnston

That was one hell of a movie. It was my first time watching also. And I agree. This one was my favorite. Good job, Cassie.

Rick Williams

All true and well said. Don't forget, you also need a primer in the brass case.....to initiate the gunpowder and fire the bullet.

'Pappy' Johnston

I can't believe how much I noticed the terrible trigger discipline in both movies. The old one is understandable, but I would have thought by 2016 the armorers would have been very picky about that. Also, the fake recoil really stuck out. I've never really noticed it in other movies, but these two, it was terrible.

Mike Lemon

If you do like the Japanese to western trip, yojimbo was redone as one of Eastwoods classics for a few dollars more which got redone again as a 30s bootleg liquor Era take with Bruce Willis and Christopher Walken called last man standing.

Bubba Fett

Cassie everyone keeps talking about Bug's Life is an extension of this troupe but because Kurosawa was someone Lucas admired A New Hope can be considered in the same vain. Count the heros in the Death Star and what that are trying to accomplish. Just a thought from little ole me 😂. You're awesome loved this week as well.

David Freese

For myself, as someone that doesn't like many Newer Films or Remakes, especially Remakes to Classic Films. This version was Pretty Damn Good. I saw it once when it came out, but never returned to it. I remembered it being good and remembered being impressed by Chris Pratt. But, everytime The Magnificent Seven came up, and I could watch the Original or the Remake, I always would choose the Original. Now after watching this One again, I can certainly say, I wouldn't mind seeing it again. In fact, I plan on adding it to my Collection. I also don't normally enjoy the "for the sake of inclusivity" that filmmakers try to apply to most films of today. However they made it work in this one and it was believable. Either way, I am a Sucker for Outlaws turned Heroes tales. (-: One small thought… Reading the Credits at the beginning of the film, has only ever very rarely ruined any surprise in a film. :-)

Larry Darrell

As with Ocean's 11 .... the new remake is just bigger and better.

Richard Bourne

There is nothing wrong with having this one as your favorite. This one was full of all the modern sensibilities and action scenes that would suit a modern movie fan. Now having seen all three films, I think my favorite is the one I hadn't seen before this week, Seven Samurai. And that is a surprise to me!

MikeLL

This one is my favorite too.

Timothy Roberts

I LOVE this interpretation of this story. To me, it's the best of all of them, for several reasons. I do love the others, but this one really hits home for me. Cassie, all I can say is DON'T APOLOGIZE for liking the one you like most. If there's a problem for some folks with your assessment, it's their problem, not yours. We all like what we like and it's part of what makes us - US - and there's no reason to say you're sorry for not feeling just like everyone else.

Terdell Ferguson

Here's a good one Mr Deeds 2002

Randolph Tirazona

Kurosawa might have liked this version,Good movie for a contemporary western,Chris Pratt is cool as well doing his best Steve McQueen..no John Wayne in this version we'll have to watch 'The Searchers' for JW's most iconic cowboy roll..

Celeste McAllister

Vincent D'Onofrio, the guy from Full Metal Jacket, also plays my favorite Thor on screen in The Adventures in Babysitting (1987). He's only in it for about 3 minutes, but he steals the show. Hopefully it gets added to the list sometime. Looking for the clip, I see that it is the first live action Thor ever, and approved by Marvel.

Mike Lemon

This is on my list of "Remakes/Reboots That Worked". It was pretty fair because it had a lot of the qualities that make for a good remake: -a good amount of time in between the original and the remake passed (56 years in this case) -a story that can easily be adapted while able to be made into one's own -the right people with decent reputations and credits got behind it (Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, director Antoine Fuqua, etc.) -homage, tribute, or acknowledgement is payed in some way, shape, or form to the original. Now, is this one a masterpiece? No.👎 Is this one an entertaining, action-packed, emotional, rewatchable, good film? Most definitely. 👍 I'm glad you enjoyed this one, Cassie. I had a feeling you would. 😁 PS: I implore you, not to watch the remake of Psycho (1998). It is a shot-for-shot, word-for-word colored duplicate. Unoriginal and totally unnecessary. 😂

Zane From Canada

I have been watching all the “Sevens” over the weekend. I have never seen The Seven Samurai or the original Magnificent Seven. I have seen this remake though. Not since it was released though. It will be interesting to see how similar and different it is now that the other two movies are still fresh in my mind. Looking forward to watching it this evening!

Robert da Spruce

No you can’t just collect bullets and reuse them. They’re heavily distorted after hitting a target. But also you need the casing that holds the bullet and the gunpowder to fire it. The casing is the part you see fly out of guns in most movies or the part they remove from their revolver pistols when they reload. Now back when when guns were one shot at a time you loaded your own gunpowder you could maybe get away with it but it’d be a lot of work.

djKENTO

oooohhh i do love denzel and thought i had seen all his best, equalizer sounds good !!

Cassie

Güero refers to any person with fair hair and skin. There is no political connotation to the term güero, and Mexicans will even refer to fair-haired compatriots as güeros.

Anthony Perez

I was hoping you would have watched the Majestic with Jim Carrey, the best Memorial Day memorial movie

zynjams

While I think Antoine Fuqua is a terrific director, and the story is one of my favorites in the Western genre, I didn't particularly like this version of the story. Mainly because Mr. Fuqua said he was specifically remaking the story to reflect the world as it is today. That kind of soured me on this version. https://www.indiewire.com/features/general/the-magnificent-seven-director-antoine-fuqua-western-remake-1201729968/ My feelings are the same for any movie that's a retelling / remaking of a story specifically to "modernize" it. Just tell an original story.

Miles E Coburn

While I don't consider this one to be anywhere near as good as the original, it is definitely an enjoyable Western. Denzel is great, no surprise there, but Chris Pratt is actually my favorite in this one.

John Casamassa

The Searchers, that IS a great Western!!

Bill Maurer

This is my favorite of the three. Better acting, better story, better build up. More fun. Not too long Just overall better.

Alex Gorell

This was a good one! This was also a reunion for Denzel and Ethan Hawke after being in Training Day (2001) together, which was also directed by Antoine Fuqua! I highly recommend watching Training Day, it’s crazy but such a good movie! Also you should check out The Equalizer movies with Denzel, favorites of mine! The 3rd one is coming out soon in September, and they are all also Antoine Fuqua directed lol

Gilbert Gonzalez

Easily the worst of the three sevens. Just did absolutely nothing for me. The only thing worth noting about this entry was the character Red Harvest, who was presumably named after the book by Dashiell Hammett that provided the basis for another great Akira Kurosawa film, Yojimbo (later remade as A Fistful of Dollars starring Clint Eastwood and remade again as Last Man Standing starring Bruce Willis).

Just Plain Bob

I believe that bear was wearing people’s clothes…just LOVE that line

JL_83

Dang Cassie, you sure jumped into this one very fast lol! Seemed like it wasn't that long ago you just posted your full reaction to the original (1960) lol! I'll definitely have to check it out at some point later, right now, it's 4 in the morning, I gotta catch some Zzz's! Glad you enjoyed this film, I saw this one in the theater when it came out, and I loved it! I'll give you my commentary about this one later! Take care and have a happy Monday 🥰😁😉👍🌹

Wesley White

To answer your question, yes I think being familiar with an actor does make it easier to enjoy the film. This was a great series to react to. It would be interesting for you and maybe Carly to go back and watch some more original films that some of the more recent films were based on. A great example would be at Christmas to watch "The Shop Around The Corner" with Jimmy Stewart starring, this is the film that "You've Got Mail" with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan is based on. Highly recommend. Thanks for watching these, sevens week was a really good idea, and great reactions all around. You are the best!

Dave

Magnificent!
