I watched this movie several times and enjoy it overall. But can’t help remembering how difficult it was to like Billy Chapel. He’s a spoiled, self-centered boy who doesn’t really redeem himself by the end of the movie.

This was indeed a good one. A very nice blend of sentimental and melancholic with a touching and satisfying story. I also loved your reaction. It was a nice change within the more action-packed line-up of the past weeks/months.
I swear I also remembered the exact same scene when he is cutting his hand and they go to the hospital, but not much else. Maybe I've seen it already after all, or at least parts of it.

This was my first time watching this film since I first saw it back in 1999. I liked it then and I like it now. A very different kind of film from director Sam Raimi (who did the Tobey Maguire SPIDERMAN movies and the DOCTOR STRANGE sequel) and you are right about it being just as much a love story as it is a sports movie. I knew that you would like it and I'm very glad you finally got a chance to see it.

I'm glad you loved this movie but I wanted to point out that Billy Chapels perfect game was called by the late, great, Hall Of Fame announcer of the Dodgers. Vin Scully. He was the Dodgers announcer from 1950 to 2016. He was with the Dodgers in Brooklyn and came out to Los Angeles with the team. Vin once went ice skating with Jackie Robinson and a very pregnant Rachel Robinson. When it came to calling a ballgame, there was no one better.

Over the years, I’ve heard a lot of people trash this movie. And yes, it is sentimental and even a little cheesy, about both love and baseball, but it’s also about the sacrifices you make to be the best at something you’re passionate about, and how to live with two great loves in your life. It’s not something I’ve mastered - I’m married to my work, and most women understandably don’t want to live with that - and it is inspiring to see that it’s a lesson you can learn.

I watched this on Peacock and right after that the next movie that automatically queued up, watching it right now, a baseball documentary called Fastball, about pitching, guess who's narrating? Kevin Costner, of course lol

WOW, Sam Raimi did that?! Is there anything that guy can't direct? He's done horror, comedy, horror-comedy, action, fantasy, his Marvel movie is one of my favorites in the MCU, and now a romantic sports movie that I absolutely loved.
That was really good, I'm very picky when it comes to romance movies because they're not generally my cup of tea, but some, like this one, are just so good.
Also, loved hearing Vin Scully call a game again, even though it was a fake game and he was calling it for the Evil Empire lol, the Yankees, but he was the best, RIP 💙
As far as football movies, sounds like Cassie and Carly have already seen a lot of the ones I'd recommend, but one of these days I hope we get Any Given Sunday, I know it's been in some polls but never seems to get much traction. Someday.

I think this is one movie I haven't seen yet. But based on the comments it seems promising. 😀
I've also been advocating a few times for a non-baseball/football/boxing sports movie poll. I understand that these are the most usually featured sports in movies. But there are many other great ones featuring some less popular sports too I wish would be able to get a chance for a reaction. Just to name a few:
MIRACLE (2004)
Hockey, true story, with Kurt Russel
INVICTUS (2009)
Rugby, true story, with Matt Damon, Morgan Freeman and directed by Clint Eastwood
MYSTERY, ALASKA (1999)
Hockey, fictional, with Russel Crowe
MCFARLAND, USA (2015)
Cross country, true story, with Kevin Costner
CHARIOTS OF FIRE (1981)
Running, true story, 7 Oscar nominations and 4 wins, including best picture
THE WORLD'S FASTEST INDIAN (2005)
Speed bike racing, true story, with Anthony Hopkins

When I noticed last week that you both were going to watch this movie, I said that it would be perfect (in more ways than one 😉) for you. The perfect balance of a love story, baseball and the icing on the cake is Vin Scully. He was such a master of storytelling during a game. Aa a lifelong Atlanta Braves fan, I genuinely disliked the LA Dodgers but how can you not love Vin Scully's artful play by play? Just a brilliant man..may he rest in peace. Great reaction ladies!

@Shawn Kildal - Oh, don't suggest 'Message in a Bottle' so soon after this one. Paul Newman's performance alone will kill them. Can you imagine how broken these two would be after THAT INCREDIBLE LOVE STORY?

2023-05-22 13:39:57 +0000 UTC
@Shawn Kildal - Both Jack Buck in St. Louis, and our own Bob Uecker here in Milwaukee. could spin baseball yarns with the best of 'em. But, I have to agree with you, Vin Scully was so special... recalling every nuance of the game, the players, and the pastime.

'Bull Durham'... is an enjoyable, somewhat funny, somewhat good story -
'Field of Dreams'' is a magical and great story (at least 100 times better than 'Bull Durham') -
"Love of the Game'... is THE PERFECT, MOST HUMAN STORY (easily 1000 times better than 'Field of Dreams'). I'm so glad you got to this one last Cassie (and Carly). It makes us all appreciate this truly great story even more.
Above in the comments Shawn suggested the Kevin Costner love story that actually tops this one - 'Message in a Bottle.' Please don't react to that one too soon after this one, it may break us all.-

I don't see Message in a Bottle in your Letterboxd Cassie. For some reason, I thought you'd seen it. Needs to be included on the calendar sometime soon I would think. It also has Paul Newman in it. No Way Out with Gene Hackman is also a good Costner film with lots of suspense. Thirteen Days is another terrific Costner movie and is a true story.

Nobody could tell a baseball story like Vin Scully. He helped make this movie to be as good as it was. He was a national treasure. The young girl in this movie that played the daughter, Heather, was so familiar to me and I couldn't place her. Looking her up, she was in 2005 Pride and Prejudice. She played one of the younger sisters to Keira Knightley's character. The one that was giggling all the time and married Mr. Wickham. According to Cassie's Letterboxd, she's seen Pride and Prejudice otherwise I wouldn't have given any spoilers.
