For Love of the Game (1999) - Full Reaction

All I'm gonna say is Carly said to me after she was leaving "That was one of my favorite movies, not even for the channel, just of all time!"

For Love of the Game (1999) - Full Reaction

Comments

OmG!!! This was some much fun to watch with you guys. I kept finding myself holding my breath throughout so many moments, I got light-headed. Lol On to the next.

Doc Savage

Carly makes these reactions hard to watch. Please ask her to stop spoiling them. Some of us have never seen a lot of these films. We have all but had to stop watching reactions with her. Which seems is most of the content on here sad to say. Thanks in advance.

Gideon James

basketball movie recommendation: love & basketball!

Foggy

It's on the "already watched" list- https://letterboxd.com/pib1/films/

Mike Lemon

Yes to anyway of watching Remember the Titans on the channel. Its such a good movie.

Pickadoren

there's a lot of good football movies.: Brians Song, The Blind Side, Rudy, Invinciple, Radio, Lucas, Facing the Giants, The Program, The Longest Yard, All the Right Moves (Young Tom Cruise), The Best of Times and Draft Day with Costner, to name a few

Ryan Towell

I watched this movie several times and enjoy it overall. But can’t help remembering how difficult it was to like Billy Chapel. He’s a spoiled, self-centered boy who doesn’t really redeem himself by the end of the movie.

Junior

Silverado!!!

Junior

TIN CUP!!!!!

Michael J

This was indeed a good one. A very nice blend of sentimental and melancholic with a touching and satisfying story. I also loved your reaction. It was a nice change within the more action-packed line-up of the past weeks/months. I swear I also remembered the exact same scene when he is cutting his hand and they go to the hospital, but not much else. Maybe I've seen it already after all, or at least parts of it.

Gábor Árki

I Love this Film. I Loved this Reaction. This is Why I Hang Out Here. Thank You, Thank You, Both of You.

Larry Darrell

I've missed so many great movies lately because of work. I couldn't miss this one though and watching it with you 2 reminded me just how much I hate my work for making miss all the movie nights. I'm quitting lol, I love this movie and I loved every second of this reaction.

Erik Daniel

This was my first time watching this film since I first saw it back in 1999. I liked it then and I like it now. A very different kind of film from director Sam Raimi (who did the Tobey Maguire SPIDERMAN movies and the DOCTOR STRANGE sequel) and you are right about it being just as much a love story as it is a sports movie. I knew that you would like it and I'm very glad you finally got a chance to see it.

Stick Figure Studios

This was the first movie I recommended when I joined here. I knew you would like it because of the love story. Great reaction from both of you.

Timothy Roberts

I'm glad you loved this movie but I wanted to point out that Billy Chapels perfect game was called by the late, great, Hall Of Fame announcer of the Dodgers. Vin Scully. He was the Dodgers announcer from 1950 to 2016. He was with the Dodgers in Brooklyn and came out to Los Angeles with the team. Vin once went ice skating with Jackie Robinson and a very pregnant Rachel Robinson. When it came to calling a ballgame, there was no one better.

L A Lou Peña

’Tin cup’ has all the same attributes that you love - sports, rom-com, Kevin Costner. I really hope you will react to it - I love it and I think you would too. Oh, and this was a great reaction - thank you!

Tostos

Wow! I had never seen this movie. I thought it was excellent! And watching along with you two made it even better! Great reaction Cassie and Carly!

Robert da Spruce

Rudy, Tin Cup, Miracle, The Rookie, Vision Quest, Pride of the Yankees, Money ball , Everybody Wants Some, Raging Bull

thomas king

Over the years, I’ve heard a lot of people trash this movie. And yes, it is sentimental and even a little cheesy, about both love and baseball, but it’s also about the sacrifices you make to be the best at something you’re passionate about, and how to live with two great loves in your life. It’s not something I’ve mastered - I’m married to my work, and most women understandably don’t want to live with that - and it is inspiring to see that it’s a lesson you can learn.

Brian Harris

I watched this on Peacock and right after that the next movie that automatically queued up, watching it right now, a baseball documentary called Fastball, about pitching, guess who's narrating? Kevin Costner, of course lol

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

WOW, Sam Raimi did that?! Is there anything that guy can't direct? He's done horror, comedy, horror-comedy, action, fantasy, his Marvel movie is one of my favorites in the MCU, and now a romantic sports movie that I absolutely loved. That was really good, I'm very picky when it comes to romance movies because they're not generally my cup of tea, but some, like this one, are just so good. Also, loved hearing Vin Scully call a game again, even though it was a fake game and he was calling it for the Evil Empire lol, the Yankees, but he was the best, RIP 💙 As far as football movies, sounds like Cassie and Carly have already seen a lot of the ones I'd recommend, but one of these days I hope we get Any Given Sunday, I know it's been in some polls but never seems to get much traction. Someday.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

I love this movie. I love that you ladies love this movie. I love your reaction. Thank you for a great night.

Rick Williams

Two basketball flicks off the top of my head: Blue Chips, which stars Nick Nolte and a bunch of actual ballplayers, including Shaq, in major roles; and Hustle, which stars Adam Sandler of all people as a basketball scout and was one of my favorite movies of last year.

Brian Harris

Tin Cup is a Kevin Costner must see

Bill Hayden

Top three romance movies...For Love of the Game...A Walk in the Clouds...and Moulin Rouge. One down, two more to go...if you have not seen them all, they are must sees.

Robert

Love and Basketball you guys will love that movie.

Descepticon

I am sure we'll get there. They are hooked on KC.

Naturekitty5309

Such an amazing and touching reaction from you too. Definitely not unexpected. It is great to see you two feel the way I did throughout about this movie. An incredibly underrated Kevin Costner movie. Thank you.

Jeffrey Smith

Cracks me up listening to the two of you rating how good everything he says to her is.

Brent Petty

Thank you both. Cassie, Carley I texted my ex wife and told her I still loved her. We have this very exact special zing. My deepest heartfelt desire is we find our love again. You made my year. THANK YOU BOTH!!!! Your reactions reminded me of my first time seeing it. And yes, I cried. Man enough to say it got me again. Good night ladies.

Matt Mabry

The worst of the KC baseball trilogy. Still not completely awful.

Brent Petty

Well that was one movie I’d never watched, but always wanted to! Loved it!! I’m a sucker for a good love/sports movie. I’m a big fan of Draft Day, I think you’d like it for some food KC action!

Biggman83

For love of the game, before you watch another baseball movie, please have Ben sit down and teach you all all the rules of baseball.🤣🤣😂 Great reaction

Steven Ashford

In a sport that has had so many great announcers there was none better than Vin Scully.

Keith Jones

Hey Cassie! Loved your reaction to this movie. I know u love romantic comedies So would I love to have u react to tu Jhoothi main makkar (2023) it means (You are a liar, I'm a liar) it came out this year & it's available on Netflix and please watch it with Cattie. This movie has great dance numbers and a fun family dramedy.

Ahmad Zain

I'll be watching this one tonight after work... I've seen the movie a million times... probably see it a million more 💯

carbsix

Now that she’s seen Sam Raimi’s Spider Man films and For Love of the Game, it’s time Cassie watched his magnum opus trilogy, Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness!

Just Plain Bob

Love and Basketball (2000) is a basketball and love story you should check out if you haven't already

Kevin

Love that you took the kids to a baseball game. I swear, I think that Carly would be almost as cool of an aunt as Cassie would be a sister-in-law... if you get my drift ;)

Story Archer

Hoosiers!

Story Archer

I knew this movie would hit you ladies in the sweet spot, to use a baseball metaphor. This is far and away the best Costner baseball film.

Story Archer

Now that the Kevin Costner baseball trilogy is complete, we can focus our energy on willing a Silverado reaction into existence.

Brian Pelts

I never knew this. Wow

aarswft

Vin Scully is the unsung hero of this movie, unless you know, then he's as great as expected.

Jesus F Christ

Vin Scully,I'm told he was the voice of the L.A. Dodgers for more than 50 years.

Celeste McAllister

One step closer to 'Waterworld' :)

Celeste McAllister

Directed by the same guy who directed DR. STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS, fwiw

Dave Sees Movies

Kelly Preston died of breast cancer in 2020. Kevin Costner was nominated for a golden raspberry award for this movie. I saw this in the theater with my girlfriend at the time I was 18-19. I liked I loved your reaction to this movie fantastic.

Zachary K. (Swiftie)

I think this is one movie I haven't seen yet. But based on the comments it seems promising. 😀 I've also been advocating a few times for a non-baseball/football/boxing sports movie poll. I understand that these are the most usually featured sports in movies. But there are many other great ones featuring some less popular sports too I wish would be able to get a chance for a reaction. Just to name a few: MIRACLE (2004) Hockey, true story, with Kurt Russel INVICTUS (2009) Rugby, true story, with Matt Damon, Morgan Freeman and directed by Clint Eastwood MYSTERY, ALASKA (1999) Hockey, fictional, with Russel Crowe MCFARLAND, USA (2015) Cross country, true story, with Kevin Costner CHARIOTS OF FIRE (1981) Running, true story, 7 Oscar nominations and 4 wins, including best picture THE WORLD'S FASTEST INDIAN (2005) Speed bike racing, true story, with Anthony Hopkins

Gábor Árki

Tin Cup is an absolute must watch for this channel. Make it happen everyone.

Joon S

I'm so glad you watched this one, ladies. A beautiful story with the perfect actor to tell it, and the late great Vin Scully narrating(he really was the best).

Patrick Egan

When I noticed last week that you both were going to watch this movie, I said that it would be perfect (in more ways than one 😉) for you. The perfect balance of a love story, baseball and the icing on the cake is Vin Scully. He was such a master of storytelling during a game. Aa a lifelong Atlanta Braves fan, I genuinely disliked the LA Dodgers but how can you not love Vin Scully's artful play by play? Just a brilliant man..may he rest in peace. Great reaction ladies!

Robin Craft

haha i was thinking about this, sometimes i don’t mention recognizing them and get the comments “disappointed you did not recognize xyz” but then sometimes we prob overdo it, i remember watching other reactors in the beginning being bugged by that too

Cassie

@Shawn Kildal - Oh, don't suggest 'Message in a Bottle' so soon after this one. Paul Newman's performance alone will kill them. Can you imagine how broken these two would be after THAT INCREDIBLE LOVE STORY?

Terry Yelmene

@Shawn Kildal - Both Jack Buck in St. Louis, and our own Bob Uecker here in Milwaukee. could spin baseball yarns with the best of 'em. But, I have to agree with you, Vin Scully was so special... recalling every nuance of the game, the players, and the pastime.

Terry Yelmene

@Andrew Rose - Thanks for advocating for this one - I've been pushing it myself every sports movie opportunity as well.

Terry Yelmene

'Bull Durham'... is an enjoyable, somewhat funny, somewhat good story - 'Field of Dreams'' is a magical and great story (at least 100 times better than 'Bull Durham') - "Love of the Game'... is THE PERFECT, MOST HUMAN STORY (easily 1000 times better than 'Field of Dreams'). I'm so glad you got to this one last Cassie (and Carly). It makes us all appreciate this truly great story even more. Above in the comments Shawn suggested the Kevin Costner love story that actually tops this one - 'Message in a Bottle.' Please don't react to that one too soon after this one, it may break us all.-

Terry Yelmene

One of my favorite sports movies. Great reaction, and I KNEW you two would love it too! Ladies, you're missing a lot of details trying to figure out where you've seen actors. Maybe check out the cast list before you start the film?

Sean Novack

Not one of my favorite Costner films but I can definitely understand why you both loved it

nick bell

So the question is which one takes the top spot: Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, or For Love of the Game?

JL_83

Ah, the Kevin Costner baseball trifecta is complete now, while I know I was not the only one, I can stop begging and direct my energy to “No Way Out”

Keith Jones

Kevin does baseball well loved you girls reaction to the way it played out. Another beautiful movie think you should watch is Mr Holland's Opus has Richard Dreyfus one of the guys from Jaws such a beautiful movie and as 52 yr old man has me teary-eyed at the endeverytime

Tony Olmos

This one was special. The range of emotions and gut punching us directly in our feels in just the right way. If you ever want a glimpse of what a perfect game is really like and how special it is look up Matt Cain Giants Perfect Game and just enjoy the highlights … it feels EXACTLY like this movie.

Rollo Tomassi

Kelly Preston passed away in July of 2020 from breast cancer. I remember being shocked by that as I had no idea what she was going through.

Shawn Kildal

I don't see Message in a Bottle in your Letterboxd Cassie. For some reason, I thought you'd seen it. Needs to be included on the calendar sometime soon I would think. It also has Paul Newman in it. No Way Out with Gene Hackman is also a good Costner film with lots of suspense. Thirteen Days is another terrific Costner movie and is a true story.

Shawn Kildal

Another Costner sports movie you might like is Draft Day with Jennifer Garner and Chadwick Boseman

Justtired

She was also in Christine

Shawn Kildal

As a kid, I used to watch baseball games just to listen to Vin Scully. He helped me fall in love with baseball

Shawn Kildal

Nobody could tell a baseball story like Vin Scully. He helped make this movie to be as good as it was. He was a national treasure. The young girl in this movie that played the daughter, Heather, was so familiar to me and I couldn't place her. Looking her up, she was in 2005 Pride and Prejudice. She played one of the younger sisters to Keira Knightley's character. The one that was giggling all the time and married Mr. Wickham. According to Cassie's Letterboxd, she's seen Pride and Prejudice otherwise I wouldn't have given any spoilers.

Shawn Kildal

plus you got to listen to the great Vin Scully

zynjams

The late, great Vin Scully....a GREAT voice for baseball.

Jacob Colson

We talked about this on IG and I KNEW you’d love it. I literally stoped another reactor’s content to watch this instead hahaha.

djKENTO

Mmm….if you guys ever get around to watching Pollyanna (1960), I’m quite sure both of you will say it is one of your all time favorite films. Same with The Scarlet Pimpernel.

Matthew Hines

Tin Cup

thomas king

fyi Kelly Preston was in Jerry Macguire too... she was the crazy original fiance. i think

Andrew Rose

Yep.... been tellin' ya.... 😁

carbsix

I knew you both would adore this movie.. I voted for it every poll it was in!
