Enemy at the Gates (2001) - Full Reaction

Ok here is out WMW poll winner from YT! I have a few disclaimers for this reaction. The Soviets speaking with british accents threw me off the first third, i thought I was missing something important. I really was captivated by this movie and the story. Before my outro, I wanted to double check I wasn't getting something massively wrong about the British fighting as Soviets or something, so I looked stuff up about the movie, I read some reviews and then my thoughts got all jumbled about it and it made for the longest outro, I am sorry about that. I won't go read anything before my outro again I don't think? It made me doubt how much I should have liked it if that makes sense? ANYWAYS I really did love the story, the messages and perspective of this movie and I was fully invested and immersed the whole time!

Excellent reaction. I watched this movie a few times in the 2000s. I like WWII stuff and am a sucker for Rachel Weisz. The Battle of Stalingrad is a horrific and momentous event. Watching my son playing Playstation Call of Duty w/Stalingrad location reminded me of this movie. I've watched a couple of good documentaries that included the Battle of Stalingrad.

Hey Cassie! Loved your reaction to this movie. I know u love romantic comedies So would I love to have u react to tu Jhoothi main makkar (2023) it means (You are a liar, I'm a liar) it came out this year & it's available on Netflix and please watch it with Cattie. This movie has great dance numbers and a fun family dramedy.

Great reaction. The battle and siege of Stalingrad was probably the most costly battle in human history as it killed over 2 million people. The true story is that with the help of 2 other snipers Vasily Zaitsev killed the German major. So the result is the same.

Great movie with some great acting. Great reaction. But, it was hard to watch at times with you getting so emotional. You start making me emotional. But, there was romance and the lovers found each other at the end. So, a somewhat happy ending for you.

May I also suggest looking up the movie the Battle of Sevestopol, which is about another accomplished sniper: Lyudmila Pavlichenko. She (yes, she) is the deadliest woman sniper of WWII, with an estimated 309 confirmed kills. She gained such fame that she was even invited into the White House, being the first Soviet citizen to be invited into the presidental area as she garnered a close friendship with Eleanor Roosevelt.

The war on the Eastern Front is very much akin to the war on the Pacific Front for the US. It was a war where there was a mutual hatred for the enemy and the death toll reflects that.
As for the character, Vasili Zaystev is very much a real accomplished marksman and hero to his nation, however it’s actually unknown if the sniper duel he wrote in his memoirs may have been exaggerated by the Soviet press and propagandists at the time. There was no real Mjr. Konig. What I think took place is that another really good unknown German sniper met his end by Zaystev, and the Soviet authorities dressed it up as this big sniper duel. Is it possible this unknown sniper gave Zaystev a run for his money? Of course. But, the events seen in the movie and how history has it written down is incorrect and doesn’t correspond to existing documents.

All war is brutal! The eastern front is said to have redefined what brutal means. Given this, I'm surprised anyone made it out of the Battle of Stalingrad. And given the brutality, I'm encouraged by Cassie sticking it out, and giving us her great reaction.

80 years later, & Russia is currently using the same tactics in Bakhmut as we speak.
Yeah, Stalingrad was an ugly battle. You should check out the 1993 German film 'Stalingrad' about the same battle from the German perspective. It's much more accurate too.

Very good review Cassie. Been awhile since I saw this and glad to re-watch it with you.
Stalingrad was a major, if not THEY turning point of the entire WW II in Europe. The soldiers who fought it in nicknamed it "War of the Rats" for its brutality and ferocity.
Looking forward to what you do next.

Great film, for a war film there is admiration, affection, fear, love! It manages to mix them all up very well! The same director made "The Name of the Rose" with Sean Connery and "Seven Years in Tibet" with Brad Pitt! Both films are great!

War brings out the worst and the best in people. I know this movie is highly incorrect, but the good thing about this "war-movie" is that it's more about the characters rather then the war. So they can be more flexible and write a more suiting story. However i believe it's important that they somewhat keep the overall story to the truth.
This movie is a good example of just how brutal the USSR was against their own citizens and soldiers. The idea that soldiers would fight harder if civilians wasn't evacuated for example or them shooting the soldiers who retreated from a hopeless situation.
I recommend watching "WW2 - OverSimplified" and "The Fallen of World War II" on YouTube for more information about this war.
I know they are not 100% accurate, everything is debatable. But it's a good start for people less interested in military history.
I would also like to recommend the miniseries "Generation War" or "Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter" as it's called in Germany. It brings alot of different perspectives from the German side and is very character driven.

Zatoichi? I've not seen anyone recommend that yet. I recently watched through all 26 movies, the two others (2003, 2010), Ichi (2008), and Blind Fury. I liked the 26, but Ichi might be a better starting point for someone today.

Beau Mont, I think you are way off the mark in your reference to Cassie's reaction to the Wizard of Oz. I didn't remember her being clueless as to the point of the movie, and just to confirm, I just went back and watched her reaction again.
Personally, I think she was totally on point. She talked about the comparison of an adult watching that movie today, vs what it may have been like to watch it as a kid back in the 40's. It all made perfect sense to me.
I would imagine that the first time that I saw Wizard of Oz was in the early 60's when it was broadcast on network TV, usually just once a year. It was a wonderful movie to watch as a kid (scary scenes and all), and because it was only shown annually made it a very special event. Beau Mont, it's called "nostalgia".
I would imagine, that if I saw the movie today for the first time as an adult, it probably wouldn't knock my socks off either.

The more you know about World War II history in general and the Battle of Stalingrad specifically the more one enjoys this movie. I have a B.A. in History and have studied the Battle of Stalingrad extensively and feel the makers of this movie made it as easy as possible for the lay person to understand. Still though it is a very complicated subject. I urge everybody to read Antony Beevor's Stalingrad if you enjoyed this movie at all. A side note: I find it hilarious that Cassie got so focused on the actor's accents that she couldn't focus on the movie. She did the same thing watching the Wizard of Oz, she was so distracted by the sets that she missed the point of the movie. But I applaud her for trying.

A lovely reaction Cassie. Very emotional.
I think one thing this movie does really well is capture some of the savagery of the Eastern Front. The war between Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany was basically an ideological struggle between two opposing versions of evil. Stalinism and Nazism were both appalling in various competing ways and this movie shows how the Western Allied victory came at the cost of getting into bed with the Soviet Union which was not a morally comfortable place to be. Without the Soviet Union and their immense resources and, ultimately, the sacrifice of millions upon millions of their people, there *would* have been a Nazi bastion In Central and Easten Europe which, who knows, may have existed to today, and what that would've meant for all of us is chilling.
Of course, what we actually got was the Cold War and a Soviet Union that ruthlessly oppressed Eastern Europe and it's own people. Was that better or worse than the alternative? Nobody can really say.
There are no winners I guess, there's horrible inhumanity and savagery, which makes the bright sparks like the love between two people more important I guess. So yeh, not a perfect movie by any means, but a visceral and emotional one.
If you're taking suggestions for War Movie Wednesday in the future can I make two suggestions? "A Bridge Too Far" doesn't get enough exposure for what is a fascinating and tragic story. And "The Blue Max" is an interesting movie from the German perspective of First World War airmen which you don't often get to see.

The Soviets/Russians having such brutal death toll is partly also on Stalin himself. He was extremely paranoid, and that paranoia and fear of a coup against him lead to the Great Purge just before WW2 started. He completely decapitated the Red Army. Thousands of officers and soldiers were arrested, tortured and executed, weakening the military and leaving it unprepared for the Nazi invasion in 1941, which was partly to blame for their huge initial losses.

Not to diminish in any way the sacrifice of the American military but a lot of people fail to appreciate how much our allies also sacrificed in that war. You sometimes hear Americans, some who've never even served but talk like they were literally there storming the beaches of Normandy, say things like, "If it wasn't for us you'd all be speaking German". Well that's very dismissive of the fact that what really won the war, more than any other single factor, was the fact that the Germans failed to capture key oil reserves in both North Africa/the Middle East and Eastern Europe.
If the Soviets hadn't beat the Nazis on the Eastern Front and kept them from getting hold of their oil, and a single defiantly non surrendering unit of the French Foreign Legion at the Battle of Bir Hakeim, and the British and Free French et al at El Alamein, the war might well have gone a very different way. Not to mention the fact that the British on their island held off the Nazis, with some material support from the US because of FDR's "Lend Lease" Program, for two years before the US finally entered the war after Pearl Harbor. And don't forget the Norwegians, the French Resistance, the Partisans in Serbia and other parts of Eastern Europe, and in the East the Chinese, the Vietnamese, etc., fighting the Imperial Japanese Army, and so many other generally unsung heroes, not all of them had movies made about them...
Just saying it really was a world war, and no single country won it. Respect to all who fought and sacrificed and especially those who died to end Nazi genocide and oppression.

WW2 was brutal for the Soviets/Russians. Their death toll made the rest of the allies look like nothing. We're talking less than a million military casualties for Canada, UK, and US combined compared to almost 7 million Russians (conservatively because nobody knows.) More than double that to factor in civilians because Stalin was so psychotic. World War 2 was an outright massacre on the Russian people. In spite of that, they held Hitler's maniacal plans back, and eventually when the tide turned they were the first to capture Berlin.

Not that it doesn't make for a good movie, but its historical accuracy (and even authenticity) is more than questionable for sure. I think in some ways it is similar to Braveheart. It would be a great subject matter for History Buffs YT channel for sure. 😃
I was still in high school when it was released. I remember my history teacher didn't like it at all and preferred the German movie STALINGRAD (1993), which he even screened for us in school.
PS: given the 79th anniversary of D-Day is coming on June 6, next month's WMW poll could be themed to focus on that. Of course, the best one, Saving Private Ryan, has been reacted to already. But here are a few more suggestions:
THE LONGEST DAY (1962)
The events of D-Day, based on the non-fiction book of the same name, told on a grand scale from both the Allied and German points of view.
PATTON (1970)
The World War II phase of the career of controversial American general George S. Patton, including the D-Day invasion.
THE BIG RED ONE (1980)
The story of a few men of the 1st Infantry Division as they move from battle to battle throughout Europe.
WHERE EAGLES DARE (1968)
An elite group of Allied commandos assigned to rescue an American general being held captive by the Nazis in a castle high in the Bavarian Alps.
36 HOURS (1964)
Germans kidnap an American Major and try to convince him that the war is over.

It’s a movie don’t worry about the historical accuracy. If it’s historically authentic it is good in my book. As a history buff I am biased because I know how much they got wrong but as a film lover as well I can watch this as entertainment and enjoy it. The only thing that’s get me though is the opening. They did not just throw people at the Germans until they overran them they used tactics as well. That’s not just a history thing that’s a logic thing in general as it doesn’t make sense at all in any scenario.

since I know your not a History buff and you say you don't know much about Russia's part in WW2 you should look up Lydia Litvyak. She was a WW2 Fighter Ace that flew in the skies above Stalingrad. (great story but like most from that theater of combat not a particularly happy one)

I really enjoyed your reaction Cassie. Don’t over think the British accents. It’s like Sean Connery playing a Russian Captain in The Hunt for Red October speaking with a Scottish accent! 😀

Nikita Khrushchev, played here by Bob Hopkins, was the First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union 1953 to 1964 and chairman of the country's Council of Ministers from 1958 to 1964. He was the one who reached a secret agreement with Cuban premier Fidel Castro to place Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba leading to the Bay of Pigs invasion disaster and the nuclear stand off we, (specifically, he and President Kennedy), had with Russia that ALMOST caused World War III (3).
Before it was over, the overzealous/confident Hitler ended up fighting the war on two fronts. He was invading all of Western Europe and trying to invade England. At the same time he attacked Russia thinking that it would be easy to win and in the process Stalin and the Russian governments answer was to throw millions of bodies at it. The movie does a good job of showing you the results of that philosophy. Let's Stalin absolutely did not care.

This movie does a good job at showing just how brutal Stalin was. He didn’t let civilians evacuate and willingly threw away his own soldiers’ lives. Many German civilians and soldiers feared Stalin and what he would do to them towards the end of the war and fled west to surrender to the Americans, British, and Canadians. Also the British accents messed me up when I first watched it as well 😆

This movie is about as gritty as it can be. It feels weird to find yourself rooting for a Soviet Union soldier in a war movie. I had to remind myself that the Germans were Nazis (more or less). Of course the Stalin was as bad as Hitler. Had for some reason the USSR become an immediate threat instead of Nazi Germany. It would have been a tough choice on who to side with. I've heard of the lead character in this movie historically. This was a tremendous movie with a fantastic. The one thing that I am grateful for is that as a country we have never had an enemy army at our gates.
