GoldenEye (1995) - Full Reaction

BAD dun BA DUN! Here we go with Goldeneye! We really did have a lot of fun with this one, he is SO Bond to me, probably how I would picture James Bond if someone described him to me. I think my expectations might have been a little too high for it knowing how much you all love it? Still, we were highly entertained and it is fun to see the Bond traditions continue!

Here is something you guys never even mentioned in your 'X-Men' reactions. Xenia Onatopp, in this movie, was played by Famke Janssen, who also played Jean Gray in the 'X-Men' movies.

Tom Hardy can never become Bond, the producers always want someone not so famous, they don't want the actor to have baggage, and Tom Hardy has baggage. My guess is Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

Brosnan was an excellent Bond and Tomorrow Never Dies was his best Bond film. Great opening sequence, Teri Hatcher, Michelle Yeoh, Gerard Butler, and some really memorable fight scenes.

I usually have a love/hate relationship with Bond movies, at least speaking from the first Bond film up to this one. That is to say, I like them because I enjoy the action, the cool gadgets, and Bond's badassary and charm, but I always feel like I have to deal with the things I don't like as a price. Mostly the things I don't like are the sexism and the way women are objectified. I know, the times they came out, and I'm the first one to get annoyed at someone who watches older movies, knowing they're older, and complains about that aspect. Still, the Bond movies push my snark button a little too much. But this is the first Bond movie I actually just plain like, without the bad taste the others leave behind, in part because the sexism isn't as bad in this one.
Also, I really like Brosnan as Bond. His Bond is the first one I had a crush on.
Two other things I really love about this film that the others before it didn't have.
First, I love Natalia. They didn't just have her serve as a "bimbo" there to fulfill some male fantasy quota. They made her both active and smart, and she managed to be both beautiful and strong, without making her a Mary Sue. She's great.
Second, I really like what they did with Onatopp. Yes, I know, she's evil, but they made her scarier than other women in the films, and she could kick serious ass. She doesn't hold up well now, with what movies do with evil women these days, but I'm looking at this with my 90's goggles on, and holding her up against the other Bond films as the standard. She was cool.
Great reaction, ladies. Really glad you liked this one.

I know both like to pick out actors from other films. The lady in this that is evil.. Onatopp, she plays Lenore the mom in the Taken series. And was in a couple Xmen films. And yes the horrible singer was Minni Driver from Return to Me. But she really is a singer and sings beautifully. I can't help but think how fun but difficult it must have been to purposely sing off key in the scene in this movie.

So far Pierce is my favorite Bond. I grew up watching him in Remington Steele and even back then I thought he'd make a great Bond. Now.. I'd love to see Damien Lewis play Bond although I think he might be getting to old for the part. Ever since Band of Brothers I thought he'd make a good Bond.

Love this for 1) my favorite Bond car (that I can afford) the fantastic BMW Z3 (mine is Hellrot Red with black leather interior) 2) the magnificent Arecibo Radio telescope used as a location, I finally got to see it in '16 and it was a sight, unfortunately gone now, but lives forever in the Bond world.

Fun reaction ladies!
Although you didn’t seem to enjoy it as much as a few of your other other Bond film reactions.
Maybe you guys weren’t in the right mood? Or like you said in the description Cassie, perhaps your expectations were too high?
Anyways, lots of familiar actors in this one. In addition to Boromir and Hagrid, the Soviet Defense Minister was played by Tchéky Karyo. Who played the Frenchman in The Patriot.

This was the first bond movie I saw. I remember going to see this at the ODEON cinema in Leicester Square with my whole family. It was a big deal to have a Bond movie back in the cinema. It blew my mind as a 12 year old, and it’s my favourite bond.
I will buy a bright red Ferrari 355 one day!
I prefer TWINE over TND, but that’s because I’ve overdosed on TND a lot over the years. Jonathan Pryce and Robbie Carlyle are great villains, better than Sean Bean.

Because GOLDENEYE was the first Bond film made after end of the Cold War, one of the things they (wisely) did was address that within the film itself... and not just in the dialogue (such as M calling Bond a "relic of the Cold War" or 006 bemoaning the futility of heroism in such a constantly changing globally political landscape) but also in the film's imagery. Throughout the whole movie there are recurring visual motifs emphasizing the fall/destruction of the Soviet Union (the opening credits shows monuments of Russian leaders being torn down, Bond meets Janus in what is essentially a statue graveyard, Bond knocks over whole bookshelves in the Archive room of Russian headquarters and, of course, there's the now iconic chase where Bond drives a tank that leaves much of St. Petersburg in ruins). This was a new Bond for a new world (as the film's teaser trailer famously declared) and there was concern that he might now be an anachronism. Leaning into that notion ended up paradoxically making Bond even more relevant.
Incidentally, since the film was released in 1995 (which is when most of it takes place) and the pre-title sequence occurs "nine years earlier," that would place it in 1986. That was the year that Brosnan was originally supposed to play Bond but couldn't because of his REMINGTON STEELE contract (allowing Dalton to do it). In a way, you could consider that opening scene as "correcting" that loss for Brosnan.
My biggest criticism of GOLDENEYE is the score by French musician Eric Serra which ranges from barely passable in some parts to downright awful in others. He is a talented composer (his score for LEON: THE PROFESSIONAL is great), but he was absolutely the wrong choice for a Bond movie. The best cue is the tank Chase and he didn't even write it.
So glad you both enjoyed this. It's easily Brosnan's best outing as Bond. The next one TOMORROW NEVER DIES you'll most likely enjoy too (though I'm not much of a fan myself; I still think his third one THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH is much better). We'll see you then.

This was great, enjoyed every minute of it! This was the first Bond movie I ever saw when I was a kid, 7 years old when it came out lol! It's what made me a Bond fan! Though I do agree Sean Connery will forever be the best James Bond, however Pierce Brosnan is my favorite! To help answer Carly's question on the James Bond film she keeps thinking of that involves a man with diamonds in his face, she's thinking of Brosnan's last Bond movie "Die Another Day" which some fans think is the worse Brosnan Bond film, I for one find it entertaining at least! Great job Cassie at recognizing Sean Bean as Boromir from LOTR, that a girl lol! The actress who plays the psycho chick Xena Onotop, is Famke Jansen, you would recognize her from either the "X-Men" films or the "Taken" movies, assuming of course you've seen any of those lol! I don't really have much to say in regards to trivia, but all I can say is that I really enjoyed this reaction! Plus, like you and your sister, I constantly played the N64 game back in the day, and I still play it to this day, as Jason Statham says in "The Expendables 2"; "You can't beat a classic" lol! If you plan on watching any more action films in the future, I recommend the Expendables trilogy, those are entertaining as heck lol! I look forward to many more reactions in the future, you and Carly look lovely as ever, much love and support and as always....... stay classy Cassie lol!🥰😁😉👍

Cassie, you'd could also recognize Sean Bean as the main villain in Patriot Games. Who could forget that fiery boat scene at the end. You might also recognize the evil computer geek Boris (Alan Cumming) from the TV series The Good Wife. He played Eli Gold, the political consultant for Alicia's husband. I remember you talking about the show.

I can't load all the comments, so maybe someone else pointed it out already, but it was really weird when the PIB end theme started playing - clearly in error - like right when Bond was getting it on. But for awhile there I was like, "Wow, there were way more synth drums in movies at this point than I remember." I totally bought it as part of the actual theme of the movie for like 5 minutes. It was hilarious!

Hardy's 45 years old, he'd be close to 50 when they actually make the next movie, and they want someone who can play the role for at least 10 years. Which probably knocks Cavill out of the running too. Whoever gets the part is probably no older than 35 right now.

Another fun Bond reaction. This movie was better than I remembered it, I haven't seen it for a long time.
Cassie recognized Boromir/Sean Bean instantly like a pro.
My favorite line in the reaction was Cassie's: "He's drifting in a tank, I'm in to it!" 🤣
Too bad Cassie and Carly talked over Alec's "She tasted like strawberries" line. I know they would have been suitably repulsed, like they were by his behavior throughout the last half of the movie, that was the best part of the reaction!

I loved both Brosnan as Bond during my late teens and GoldenEye as well. I still consider it to be among the better movies, but nowadays I don't think it would fit into my top 5. After Dalton I feel they took one step backwards by amping up the more outlandish aspects of the franchise again and the cheesiness. Brosnan's take on the character feels to me halfway between Connery and Moore and I think he could have been a better Bond if they would have kept a more grounded tone and a bit less Moore-ness.
Btw, one of his movies that should be on your radar is the heist/thriller THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR (1999). 😉
The movie certainly has some strong suits, a good twist and some great action scenes and stunts. That tank chase sequence is certainly a highlight not just of this movie, but in the overall franchise. They also took some considerable risks as well, like casting the amazing Judi Dench as M or openly discussing Bond being an outdated relic of the past.
But at the same time there are just too many weaknesses for me to consider it among the very best and some aspects certainly didn't age well. One of those things are the villains. Although the twist is great it is indeed somewhat hard to understand the motivations and goals of Alec. Starting with why he became a 00 agent in the first place if he had so much contempt against the British. Also, as much as I like Famke Janssen, her Onatopp character was just a bit over the top for me. My other complaint would be the score. One of the worst scores in the franchise, only saved by the tank chase sequence for which the producers ended up hiring a different composer.
The wrong expectations can be dangerous. I wish people would be more careful commenting about not yet seen movies because overhyping them could easily lead to disappointments. Although I got the feeling it probably didn't make it into your top favorites either, it is fun to see you two having fun with this franchise and appreciating and expecting the typical Bond tropes. 😀

Janus felt like the perfect stand-in for SPECTRE (Eon Productions still couldn't legally use SPECTRE or the character of Blofeld at that time), so I was disappointed when they didn't do that and went back to "unrelated bad guy of the week" type storytelling.

Although I’d seen all the Bond films prior to this, Goldeneye was the first I saw on the big screen. I still remember the combination of laughter and cheering at the end of the pre titles sequence on opening night. I enjoyed it so much I went back 5 or 6 times in the first few weeks. My younger self may also have had a crush on Izabella Scorupco.
I think most Bond fans place this in their top 5 Bond movies and for many it’s higher than that. I don’t pretend it’s a perfect film but it does have all the ingredients, in the right quantities to make a classic Bond film. Brosnan also seemed to combine the best qualities of his predecessors.
Goldeneye was the first Bond film that didn’t contain any elements from the Ian Fleming novels. It was however named after Fleming’s property in Jamaica, called Goldeneye, where he wrote most of his Bond stories.

Aw pity you didn't enjoy it too much. I love Goldeneye althoug I do prefer Licence to Kill. This is probably Brosnan's best with The World is Not Enough being a not that close second (but still great).

It was fun when Brosnan took over. Big gap since the last movie, these always came out over the Xmas holidays, the budgets got bigger. Judy Dench was a spectacular M and her back and forth with bonds character and his misogynistic tendencies were interesting. As good as this was I'm excited for Tomorrow Never Dies, that was always my favorite.

I think Brosnan's Bond movies steadily got worse as they went on. I LOVE GoldenEye, I really like Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough is ok, and Die Another Day is garbage.

This is actually one of my personal favorite Bond movies. I’ve seen it so many times. Even though Connery is my favorite, Brosnan is how I would imagine Bond looking too.
A little trivia for you:
Some of the actors who screen tested for Bond: Sean Bean, Mel Gibson, Liam Neeson, Hugh Grant and Ralph Fiennes
They also actually wanted Anthony Hopkins to play the villain originally.

I saw this as a teenager, so it was a big thing. It felt like forever since Licence to Kill, but it was only 6 years! Still one of the best Bonds imo. The rest of the Brosnan films are hit n miss. We don't speak of Die Another Day though.

I think Joe don baker is the only actor to play a villain and a good guy in the bond films. If you remember he played whittaker in the living daylights and here he plays Jack Wade

SWEET!!! I can't wait to watch this reaction, I would do it now, but I have to go to work soon! Tonight, I'll definitely watch it when I get off and give you my commentary lol! Glad to hear you and Carly enjoyed it! It still remains my favorite James Bond film, mainly because it was the first one I ever saw as a kid lol! Thanks for watching and posting this, can't wait😁😉👍

It’s an emp blast. The goldeneye satellite sends out an emp that disables any electronic within a certain area but it’s very dangerous as it overloads electronics causing fires and blackouts

Other great movie by the same director is The Mask of Zorro (1998).

This seems to be your typical Sean Bean role. Playing the bad guy, and character being killed. At least 25% of his characters end up dead. So do not get too attached to his characters.

This is a good movie but it wasn't as good as I remembered when I last watched it. I think I like Tommorrow Never Dies more.

The reason this is my favourite Bond film is because it was the very first Bond film I watched. I had nothing to compare it too. You never forget experiencing the magic and adventure of your first viewing. I was 4 years old when it came out and I loved the N64 game. Also CGI was very new at this point. I grew up watching the Brosnan Era!!!

Not only was this the first Bond movie I ever saw, but it was the first real non-animated movie I saw. I was 6. 😁
Plus, the scene with Q is the funniest. 🤣

I didn’t appreciate Tina Turner’s theme song at the time but it’s a banger.

Fun fact that opening jump was done only once. According to Martin Campbell after the stunt was finished the guy came up to the second unit director and said I’m not doing that again. Lol

Cassie: Martin Campbell, the director of GOLDENEYE, is credited a great deal with the success of this film. Indeed, he was brought back to helm the first Daniel Craig film, CASINO ROYALE. You'll see a lot of similar panache in the action sequences and in the overall blocking of scenes.
