This one was really fun, popcorn popping! Redeemed Roger Moore for me!! The way he says “dahling” ❤️ We just enjoyed the plot, the bad guy, the girl, the gadgets, made us excited for more BOND!

Union Jack is the name of the flag.
The actress Barbara Bach (wife of Beatle Ringo Star) was apparently genuinely terrified during that water scene, the look on her face when the wave crashes over her wasn’t her acting.

Best Bond film. Best Bond car. Best Bond girl. Best Bond henchman. Only the villain is very weak. If you enjoyed this you should certainly do the spiritual sequel Moonraker which actually has the best Bond villain and is absolutely on this level.

I always liked that song. Didn't realize it was in a Bond movie.
SC and DC are my top two Bonds, but Roger Moore is growing on me.
"What a handsome craft. Such lovely lines."
"All those feathers and he still can't fly."
"How does that grab you?"

It will be interesting to see how the Brosnan poll goes. Goldeneye is a shoe-in for top spot, and Die Another Day will probably be in last place (even though I unironically enjoy its silliness), but TND and TWINE are both pretty evenly matched in most Bond polls. There are pros and cons to each: TND is more of a paint-by-numbers 90s action Bond with one of the best Bond girls (Yeoh), but TWINE has a more interesting ultimate villain and more of a spy thriller vibe, albeit dragged down by some unevenness (cough Christmas Jones cough). I might just vote for DaD to avoid having to pick!

Ok, Cool. I wasn’t Preaching to you specifically. “Reset” is just a word that can be confusing, and The Girls seem confused. I’ve been taking every chance I get to reiterate that Sean Connery through Timothy Dalton are the SAME James Bond, because As far as I know, Cassie and Carly keep thinking that every actor is not connected to the previous, which is wrong. They are the SAME character on the SAME Timeline. SAME World. SAME Life. Shared History.
I’m kind of on a Mission at this point. The more times that I drop this nugget of movie knowledge, the more chances that they see it. My last step will probably be a Direct Message, then that’ll be that.

@Dazman: Well, that depends on what you mean by the word *same.* Not to get too philosophical here, but if I were to hold up two identical-looking boxes of the cereal Frosted flakes, I could say they are the same box in one sense but not the same box in another sense (like say, if I took a picture on my phone of one of those boxes and then showed that picture to someone else along with that box and told them that the box in the picture is the same box that I'm holding in my hand). Prior to this, Cassie and Carly have been assuming that Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore and now Timothy Dalton are all playing different versions of James Bond in the same way that there are multiverse versions of characters in the MCU. This has been confusing to them, so people like myself have been trying to drive home the fact that they are actually the same James Bond occupying the same continuity (with the same backstory and ontological reality within the ongoing fictional narrative) just being played by different actors. In this sense then, Craig is actually playing a *different* James Bond. Yes, it's the same character in the same way that Christian Bale is playing the same Batman that Adam West played and Ben Affleck played and Michael Keaton played, but not in the way that George Clooney and Val kilmer were playing the same Batman that Keaton played (since those versions of Batman were occupying the same continuity that Keaton's was). I'm aware of the difference, but Cassie and Carly were not, so I was using language to try to help them understand it better. Thus, I keep referring to them as the SAME James Bond (as in literally the same identical character in a single universe/continuity) and Daniel Craig as a different (or alternative universe) James Bond.

Larry - I meant reset in terms of actor/tone/style. There is only one James Bond, different eras and writers choose to emphasise different aspects. Brosnan and Craig are the same Bond too - even if it is a different continuity, they are the same character.
Dazman
2023-04-11 22:29:09 +0000 UTC
Craig is the same Bond too, just rebooted. Bond is like Superman. Many actors, one character. Continuity is a separate issue, but the Bond character has certain traits which make him Bond.

Roger Moore was the James Bond of my childhood and he was perfect - for children. When I rank Bond actors, he's close to the bottom. No fault of Moore's, it's the Bond they wanted him to play and he did it great. I just don't like the smirking jokes and general silliness of his films. Bond has always had tongue in cheek humor but I feel the Moore era took it to far. I'm looking forward to where you're going next, with Dalton, Brosnan, and Craig.

There's also a very sweet clip of an elderly Roger Moore on BBC's The One Show where he was reunited with actress Caroline Munro who played Naomi in The Spy who Loved Me. This reunion was in 2013, about four years before Roger Moore passed away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zM971US1owY

Very fun reaction! I can't wait for The Living Daylights! My fave bond movie and my 2nd fave bond actor. It's a big switch from the romcom Moore style with the saxophone and back to the Sean Connery style of spy thriller. And the soundtrack is so good. I am so excited what you will think about that movie.
The one after that, Licence to Kill is much harsher, but it does have a very strong Bond Girl. But you'll have to be more in a Lethal Weapon vibe for it. But its still a good movie in my opinion. Underrated.
And after that.. my fave Bond. Brosnan! Can't wait for those and I do hope you'll watch all 4 movies. Brosnan to me captures a little bit from every bond. The seriousness of Timothy Dalton, the charm of Moore, the playfulness of Connery and even though the plots are all over the place, they are still a lot of fun. :D Good things are ahead!

The Spy Who Loved Me is my favorite Bond novel. That they used not 1 sentence of that story in the movie perturbed me at the time. Understandable as that story contained no gadgets, explosions or eye catching helicopter pilots, still. Reminiscent of Thunderball in basic plot (?)

Funny that Cassie said watch Jaws hulk out of the fallen rubble that was on top of him. The actor who played Jaws, Richard Kiel, was slated to play the Hulk on the 70's live action TV series The Incredible Hulk but while filming the pilot of the show, the producers realized they needed someone more muscular. Also, did anyone else have audio difficulties during this full reaction? I kept hearing static noises during several parts.

Dalton is actually my personal favorite Bond. His darker and tougher interpretation was, at the time, the closest the movies got to the character of the Fleming books and actually anticipated Craig by about twenty years. Dalton is essentially the proto-Craig.

Wargames and The Day After, both released in 1983, are good movies about the threat of nuclear annihilation at the time. Wargames is the more crowd pleasing and entertaining and The Day After being the bleaker one to watch. I was 14 when both came out and they both captured the fears of the time very well.

Well, Cassie did re-watch the YT edit when she did the live chat during its premiere, so I guess that counts. Otherwise, I doubt either of them are going to want to revisit OHMSS ever again as they both really didn't like it. On the upside, though, Cassie and Carly did look at each other when Tracy was mentioned in this movie, so I think they're starting to understand that these are all the same Bond.. and for what it's worth, in my opinion Brosnan is also the same Bond. Craig is the only one who I think can actually be called a *different* Bond.

Certainly. I only mention Refreshing their Memory, such as maybe re-watching their own YouTube Edit, because, as far as I Know, They Still don’t get that It’s Been The Same James Bond Character since Sean Connery and George Lazenby. If I can give Cassie and Carly One Bit of Movie Knowledge before They quit this channel, Let it Please Be This…
Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore and Timothy Dalton ALL Play the Same James Bond Character in One Continuing Story. ABSOLUTELY.
(Pierce Brosnan maybe too, but I feel that’s another debate, after we’ve seen Dalton. It’s not as clear cut in my opinion)

Anya begins a run down on his stats. “Many lady friends, but married only once, wife killed…” Bond cuts her off.
“Alright, you’ve made your point.” Not a subject James Bond wants to talk about. He has not fully dealt with the Death of His Wife yet. He has been keeping his Feelings buried Deep.
“Your sensitive Mr. Bond?”
“On certain things, yes.” This is the Most Emotion we have seen from Roger Moore and the Softest James Bond allowed himself to be, since The Death of Tracy. All it took was the mention of His Wife being Killed, and His Real Emotions came out for a brief moment, then he shoved them back down again.
If All it took was the mentioning of his Wife to crack his Wall that he put up. I wonder what it might take… to Tear Down His Wall Completely…
And What Repercussions Might Come of It.

Moonraker and For Your Eyes Only would both be worthy Moore films to watch, certainly far above Live and Let Die. But I'm glad they at least got to see The Spy Who Loved Me before we move on to Dalton, and I don't feel a need for them to watch *all* the Bond films, so I'll take today's win and look forward to The Living Daylights (my favorite of the next two).

I think it's a bit hard for younger viewers to really understand what the Cold War was about. You focused on the destruction of New York and Moscow, but that would not have been the end of it. The US and USSR each had thousands of nuclear warheads ready to fire at each other and at their allies. Once one had fired on the other, or they thought that had happened, they each would have fired all of their missles. Their combined nuclear arsenals were enough to destroy most life on Earth, leaving most of the planet blanked in a cloud of radioactive waste, and put so much smoke into the atmosphere that we would have had years without sun and years of winter, so the result could have been the end of life on Earth. The Last of Us is a walk in the park by comparison.
The concept was called Mutually-assured Destruction, and the idea was that neither side would ever risk destroying all life. It's no wonder that the acronym for this was "MAD". When this movie came out, we were in the middle of this time, and a lot of movies (like the Hunt for Red October) were based on this same worry.

Ah, yes. THE SPY WHO LOVED ME. The first Bond film of my lifetime (I was born in '76, it was released in '77). Generally considered Roger Moore's best (a take I happen to agree with). I just finished the video and your reaction was excellent as usual. I knew you would enjoy this one.
Something about the film that you might not know: this was the first Bond movie to be produced solely by Albert ("Cubby") Broccoli. On every prior entry to this, Broccoli had a producing partner named Harry Saltzman, but over the years Saltzman made bad financial decisions and ended up having to sell his half of his ownership to franchise.
Added to that was the fact that the last several Bond films were not very good and not nearly as successful as they used to be. There was a real sentiment going around that Bond may have been passe now and it was time to retire the character. Broccoli took a real risk with this movie by pouring a lot of money into it and it shows, it's all right up there on the screen. After relatively low-key and lackluster Roger Moore entries, he finally came into his own as Bond in this spectacular adventure that leaned very heavily into the fantasy and humor. The rest of Moore's tenure would follow suit and they would be the most commercially successful Bond films ever at the time. This was when I was introduced to the character as a kid.
Broccoli's gamble paid off. Like Bond in the opening sequence, he was going over a cliff (that BTW is my vote for the best James Bond pre-title sequence of all; reportedly when it premiered, Prince Charles himself stood up and saluted when the Union Jack -- not "cracker Jack" -- parachute opened). To this day, Cubby's company, now run by his daughter and stepson, are still in charge of the franchise.
A couple more things of note: this will be your last time seeing Bernard Lee as M and Lois Maxwell as Moneypenny (Lee died after the next Roger Moore film; Maxwell continued to play her part for the rest of the Roger Moore years, but was considered too old when they recast Bond). Since your next entry is the first Timothy Dalton one, there will be a new M played by Robert Brown (who was actually in this film as Admiral Hargreaves) and a new Moneypenny played by Carolyn Bliss. Q, however, will still be played by Desmond Lewellyn. You'll see him well into the Brosnan years.
Really can't wait for you to see Timothy Dalton. He is my personal favorite Bond and I think arguably the best actor to play the role. His version is a bit darker, tougher and more serious. In many ways, he anticipated Daniel Craig's interpretation. You will also see he is probably the most romantic of all the Bonds. I predict you will both really like THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS.

Cassie: You had two issues with TSWLM that should be addressed:
1. You wanted Jaws to die. That's the mark of a great henchman.
2. You didn't like how Anya/XXX got relegated to being a damsel in distress.
You should be aware that the next film, MOONRAKER, resolves both of these issues. I won't comment on Jaws other than to say that he's back in MOONRAKER. Regarding the second issue, the 'Bond girl' in the film is 100% competent and is integral to the ending rather than just being window dressing.
it's a fun one for many reasons. It's polarizing in that it's a bit more camp than a lot of the films (a lot of people love it, a lot of people hate it) but I suspect you'd dig it.
That said, after watching this reaction, I'm even more convinced that you need to do FOR YOUR EYES ONLY. If you ever come back to the Moore films and decide to tick off a few more, do FYEO and consider doing MR as well.

Ah, Caroline Munro (the girl flying the helicopter), to me always the most beautiful Bond girl, even with Mrs. Starr in this one. The comment about being like John Wick with the headshots was very funny. They mde this movie with a very large budget and it was very Bondian with the massively huge set and dozens of extras in the battle scene, a very memorable Bond movie. Too bad you are skipping the evolution of Bond in the next few Moore movies, they went overboard with the gadgets in the next movie (Moonraker), then brought it all back down to earth with For Your Eyes Only, almost From Russia With Love-like with very few gadgets. Alas, yes, they didn't pay attention to the song, but they saw this before they even posted Live and Let Die and thus receiving the message that paying attention to the song was a major thing. Let them slide this time.

Yes, Dalton was very much the 'serious' reset to Moore. When Brosnan's one's got sillier they reset with Daniel Craig.

This nailed a lot of what makes a great Bond movie – the pre-credits chase, the big stunt, the henchman, the cool car and the great song. I liked Barbara Bach as Anya. Even though they didn’t show her being a bad ass, they at least alluded to it and there have been far more helpless Bond girls. She and Ringo Starr have been married over 40 years, which seems rare for celebrities.
Also, If you call Jaws Frankenstein in the You Tube edit, you’ll get lots of comments about that being the doctor not the monster – and comments are good for the algorithm!

Lots of people shouting Union Jack. Love it when Cassie says things wrong though "Live and Let Love" 😆

Once again, they paid no attention to the theme song!

I adore this movie. It’s not just my favorite Bond film. It’s one of my favorite films period. Nearly everything is perfect for me. The love interest is perfect. The villains are perfect. The action is perfect. The gadgets are perfect. Bond is perfect. I come back to this movie all the time and will continue to come back to it all the time. Fantastic reaction as always. I’ve been waiting for you to get to this one since you started these movies. and it did not disappoint. Thanks so much. 🙂

Imagine waking up in the morning and deciding to compose “Nobody Does It Better”. What a tune.

I agree about the main theme. I think it is the best Bond song of them all.

This was the movie that might have saved Bond. Nobody really knew where it was going after On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. A lot of money persuaded Connery back in Diamonds Are Forever, but the old magic was gone. Moore took over but his first 2 movies, one you’ve seen, didn’t really hit the mark. If this had failed it might have all ended. Of course it didn’t and 45 years later it’s still going.
I’m glad you enjoyed this one. This film is the most classic/iconic representation of Moore’s Bond. It’s his ‘Goldfinger’. I hope at some point you’ll go back and watch another of Moore’s Bond films.
Now you move on to Timothy Dalton. I don’t remember either him or his movies being well received at the time but the years have been kind to both. I think, generally, they’re far more highly regarded now than they were at the time. I rank The Living Daylights, especially, highly among Bond films. At this point you might also start to notice how each new Bond is a contrast to the previous one.

This was definitely my favorite Bond movie growing up. I didn't discover Connery until after. I just remember this film always on cable when I was a kid and I never missed it. And it never disappointed.
And the theme song is probably my all time Bond jingle. Carly Simon hit it just right.

This is one of my favorites. The next movie Moonraker is great too and one new character from this returns. For Your Eyes Only was supposed to be the next one but then Star Wars was released so they wanted something more like that so Moonraker was made.

This is easily Roger Moore’s best Bond movie and performance. He finally hit his stride in this one and you can really tell.
A couple bits of trivia.
*The bad guy was supposed to be Blofeld but due to legal issues they couldn’t use him.
*Also Michael Billington, agent in bed with XXX in the beginning screen tested for the role of James Bond more than any other actor and was considered the top replacement if Moore ever left the role. He screen tested for On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Live and Let Die, Moonraker, Octopussy and For Your Eyes Only

A female agent designated XXX ... so Bond. The British Flag, the old Union Jack, on the parachute was an iconic scene. (that is what Cassie asked Google about)

When I was a little kid, one of my Dad’s friend used to have a white Lotus just like the one in this film. Whenever he came to our house, my brothers and I would sit in the driveway and pretend to be James Bond! 😀
That’s why this particular Bond film holds a special place in my heart. Really looking forward to watching your reaction!
Happy Easter everyone!

This was Roger Moore's best, hands down. She is Ringo's wife in real life also. I think this was the introduction of Jaws.
