No problem, that was one of the great things about BBC Scene by Scene, it covered obscure films as well as the famous films, I always learned something new about each person that was interviewed. There were 20 interviews done in total with people like Scorsese, Brian De Palma, Tom Hanks and Terence Stamp.

JONATHAN REDFERN WILLIAMS

Thanks for sharing!

Kelly Marie

There is a brief clip of that film shown in a BBC Scene by Scene interview with Sean Connery at the 6 minute 55 second mark, Sean Connery with an Irish accent! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUrh1CnDMSc

JONATHAN REDFERN WILLIAMS

Never heard of it - thanks for tip. Ill give it a go

Steve Barrett

In case anyone is curious, here's how Ian Fleming ended his novel ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. +++++ Ten minutes later, Tracy said, 'There's a red car coming up fast behind. Do you want me to lose him?' 'No,' said Bond. 'Let him go. We've got all the time in the world.' Now he could hear the rasping whine of the eight cylinders. He leaned over to the left and jerked a laconic thumb forwards, waving the Maserati past. The whine changed to a shattering roar. The wind-screen of the Lancia disappeared as if hit by a monster fist. Bond caught a glimpse of a taut, snarling mouth under a syphilitic nose, the flash-eliminator of some automatic gun being withdrawn, and then the red car was past and the Lancia was going like hell off the verge across a stretch of snow and smashing a path through a young copse. Then Bond's head crashed into the wind-screen frame and he was out. When he came to, a man in the khaki uniform of the Autobahn Patrol was shaking him. The young face was stark with horror. 'Was ist denn geschehen? Was ist denn geschehen?' Bond turned towards Tracy. She was lying forward with her face buried in the ruins of the steering-wheel. Her pink handkerchief had come off and the bell of golden hair hung down and hid her face. Bond put his arm round her shoulders, across which the dark patches had begun to flower. He pressed her against him. He looked up at the young man and smiled his reassurance. 'It's all right,' he said in a clear voice as if explaining something to a child. 'It's quite all right. She's having a rest. We'll be going on soon. There's no hurry. You see--' Bond's head sank down against hers and he whispered into her hair--'you see, we've got all the time in the world.' The young patrolman took a last scared look at the motionless couple, hurried over to his motor cycle, picked up the hand-microphone, and began talking urgently to the rescue headquarters.

Happy St. Patrick's Day! If you want to watch a fun Irish movie with a young Sean Connery, check out Darby O'Gill and the Little People (1959). I've watched this on St. Patrick's Day ever since I was a kid! It's so sweet and cute, a little dark, but mostly fun and charming!! 🍀🌈 💛💚

Kelly Marie

What a great thumbnail! So animated. I wonder what scenes those reactions are from??!! Cassie throwing some serious side-eye! =D

Bill W

Superior? Don’t look at the reviews much, eh?

Steve Barrett

"The voters have spoken - the bastards." :-)

Happy Hanukkah

I was so close to "liking" your comment, and then you had to mention Eva Green! :-)

Happy Hanukkah

Larry: You, Sir, Are an Oddball. :-)

Happy Hanukkah

War of the Roses? Absolutely not! They should watch the much superior The Break-Up! [This was very much sarcastic, though I loved that one bar scene with Jon Favreau.]

Happy Hanukkah

To repeat a comment of mine from elsewhere: I am reminded of the anecdote [I can't currently find a source] about the time Roald Dahl (!) was asked to script a James Bond movie. "Dahl was given a free rein on his script, except for the character of Bond and 'the girl formula,' involving three women for Bond to seduce." His alleged response: "At the same time?"

Happy Hanukkah

I Know. I’ve done all I’m gonna do. I’ve tried to be Civil and I don’t want to Bully anyone. Is What it Is, I guess.

Larry Darrell

Always. Unless Someone moves the Hat Rack close to the door.

Larry Darrell

FUN FACT: This Bond film is movie director Christopher Nolan's favourite of all the James Bond films. In the UK, there is a BBC radio interview show called Desert Island Discs where the famous person interviewed chooses eight music tracks that mean a lot to them. Christopher Nolan was interviewed on that radio show and chose the title track of this film as one of his eight desert island discs.

JONATHAN REDFERN WILLIAMS

It’s infuriating that he’s refusing to fix it. 😡

Tim Raths

Cassie, if you’re reading this please don’t read any other comments because people are spoiling things.

Tim Raths

Exactly. I literally mention this same thing in my comment above.

Stick Figure Studios

After you've removed your hat, will you be tossing it across the room so that it lands comfortably on a hat rack?

Stick Figure Studios

Read it again.

Appreciate the support for One of My Favorite Bond Films, however mentioning 1) That Specifically One film is Contrary to Another Specific film, alludes to Specific Plot Points and Specific Elements in Another Specific film. 2) A Specific Song from a Specific film is in a Specific Location in Another Specific film. 3)A Specific Line from a Specific film is in Another Specific Film. Another Specific Film is a Film, The Girls have yet to watch, but Will Definitely Watch Very Soon. Many of Us Patrons, do look forward to some Surprises in Films, whether They notice them or not. Some of Us Are Looking Forward to These. Please Consider an Edit on Your Post, Thank You.

Larry Darrell

It's probably easier to appreciate this ending when one has seen a few more traditional Bond films. Most Bond movies have endings like "Goldfinger", super happy and lighthearted. The ending to "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" helps explain why Bond never settles down with one woman. The one time he did, she was killed and his heart was broken. Bond's life on her majesty's secret service is simply too dangerous for him to be in a meaningful, long-term relationship.

David Woodbridge

As others have said, you two should watch For Your Eyes Only, even if it doesn't win the poll. You'll get some closure to this ending.

Rick

Thank you, sir. :-)

Stick Figure Studios

Hat’s Off to You, Sir. :)

Larry Darrell

I don't see any specifics given away.

Bill W

"What was the point of the entire show?" The point was that Bond saved the world but couldn't save his wife. That's the tragic irony. To do his job, Bond has to ultimately be unattached. His profession puts him and others that he cares about in danger. As much as he might want a happy life with a wife and a family, he doesn't get it. Some people just don't. In the end, he's a loner and he has to be. That's the sacrifice he makes on behalf of everyone else, to keep the rest of us safe. It's an idea also touched upon in the MISSION IMPOSSIBLE series when Luther explains in FALLOUT that Ethan Hunt was happy for a time married to Julia, but whenever something bad happened in the world, they both wondered if he could have stopped it, so he ultimately let her go so that he could protect everyone else from harm. Yes, it's sad but also kind of profound because while these might be fictional characters, figures of fantasy, what they represent symbolically is very real. There really are people out in the world like that fighting on the front lines for our freedom at great cost to themselves and being reminded of that is a good thing, just like it's worthwhile to watch a war movie every now and again and be reminded of what some individuals have given up for the greater good.

Stick Figure Studios

Specifically, it's Gary Shaw's comment. I hate to mention him by name, but it is a total breach of etiquette and whatever has to be done to ensure you guys don't read it.

Stick Figure Studios

Loved this reaction by the both of you! The ending is the same as the book's ending as well. If you want more about it, read the e-book I sent you! Lots of good info in there!

Rick Moreno

One of the Best Moments on This Channel. I Was Half Crying and Half Laughing.

Larry Darrell

Loved both your reactions to the ending. The great thing is that sad ending is referenced in future Bond films of the Roger Moore/Dalton era.

JONATHAN REDFERN WILLIAMS

Agreed. Romancing the Stone (1984) first though.

Larry Darrell

As always your reactions are priceless. You should DEFINITELY see “War of the Roses” - you both would love a dark comedy!!! lol

Steve Barrett

Never saw this bond before. I wish I still hadn’t. Easily the worst bond film IMO. I’ll be glad when they watch Roger Moore…..but I predict they’ll like Daniel Craig the best - while I prefer Pierce Brosnan.

Steve Barrett

And that's what makes Bond interesting, his complexity.

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, FYEO would have been very satisfying to them after this movie, but alas, the patrons are screwing it up.

Stick Figure Studios

Broanan's Bond actually never mentions being married (although Timothy Dalton's does once) but there are still a couple subtle references to Tracy in the Brosnan movies.

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, major spoiler. Time.to remove the comment.

Stick Figure Studios

Also, regarding Bond's blatant womanizing--while I'm a huge Bond fan, it isn't something I really care for, either. But as a spy, if Bond can get vital information out of a woman by seducing her, it's in the interest of the mission to do so. While Bond is getting information out of the girls at the research clinic, the filmmakers do have him enjoy it a bit too much for my liking, but Bond has always been in the mold of classic male fantasties, so sadly it will just always be there. Bond, as a character, isn't genuinely supposed to be a completely admirable person, though, as he does terrible things, even if it's in the name of the greater good,. That's something Bond's creator felt was very true of the character and his stories.

Bruce

I knew you both would hate the ending--but to be fair to the filmmakers, that's how the novel ended. The next novel followed up on this ending. The movies, however, did not (not necessarily). While this movie was actually not a flop, it did make less money than the previous installment, and Lazenby, given bad advice, quit the role. As a result, this film became a little bit of a black sheep for a while. Being a one-off, odd-film out with a polarizing ending, the next film in the series decided to sorta brush-off any direct connection with OHMSS, trying to get viewers to forget all about it. However, that total brush off wouldn't last forever. And frankly, I think it's why people need to be voting for "For Your Eyes Only" in the Roger Moore poll. I think Cass and Carly deserve it. But democracy is what it is :-o

Bruce

For Cassie & Carly Hate to do it, but, Six posts Up from here, Surprises & Specifics of a Film that You Both will be Watching Soon, are Given Away. Please be Wary. This Warning will be removed if the Spoilers are Removed. This Post will then be changed into a Post that Shares in the Admiration that This Patron was Giving, but Without Specifics.

Larry Darrell

…lots of ‘also’ in that comment. Sorry.

Ria Grix

Pierce Brosnan’s Bond actually mentions that he was once married and that his wife died. Emma Rigg was Emma Peel in The Avengers which she left to work on this movie, her predecessor Honor Blackman who played Cathy Gale, also left The Avengers to play Pussy Galore in Goldfinger. Patrick Macnee who played the main character, John Steed, also finally appeared in a Bond movie in the 80s with Roger Moore. Also the theme music to On her Majesty’s Secret Service has one of the greatest remixes by Propellerheads.

Ria Grix

For my money, Diana Rigg was the perfect casting as the love of Bonds life. Rigg took the role, after her starring role as Mrs Emma Peel in the television spy show "The Avengers." In that role, she played an action spy for a British intelligence agency. Her role gave her world wide fame. Aside from her outstanding whit and athletic ability, she was a fashion icon. There has been only one Bond "girl" that comes close to being a match for Bond, and that is Eva Green, who played Vesper in Casino Royale.

Patrick Reynolds

Either delete your comment or edit it please.

Tim Raths

Great reactions to this movie from the both of you !!! Watched this movie twice with you and will probably now buy it. Vastly underrated Bond movie and Lazenby did a very good to great job with his one and only chance at being Bond

Bill Maurer

Dude!? You Couldn’t wait? :( Please Edit Your Comment, Please ):

Larry Darrell

A rather polarizing film but among the best in the Bond series.

Dooly

All three ALL AT ONCE.

Brian McGovern

The Daniel Craig Bond movies use this movie as a template and No Time to Die is the flip-side of this movie. The Louis Armstrong song is the end credit music for No Time to Die, and the "all the time in the world" line is used in No Time to Die. This is my favorite Bond movie.

Gary Shaw

Is that disgust, disbelief or bewilderment?

ArsTropica

Ooohh the look on Cassie's face in the thumbnail says it all about her reaction.😂

Brian McGovern

In my Opinion, One of PIB's Best. So much Unexpectedness. Ya'll Totally Under-Estimated James Bond. This was Awesome, Thank You Again. For Cassie & Carly PS: Hate to do it, but, Two posts down from here, Surprises & Specifics of a Film that You Both will be Watching Soon, are Given Away. Please be Wary.
