Its about a person struggling with their nature. The game wants the player to feel bad about the acts of violence Joel engages in. It is a commentary on tribalism, not an endorsement of it.

What humanity actually needs are more sensitive, loving souls like yourself. I am definitely not one of those people who thinks video games and violent movies turn people into serial killers - I love Shakespeare, and he could get plenty violent and horrific - and seeing violence can sometimes be ennobling, like forcing ourselves to confront the historical horrors depicted in Schindler's List and Chernobyl and 12 Years a Slave. But in this instance we are talking about a show based on a game where the point is for the viewer/player to inflict as much violence as possible to protect one's own tribe. What offends me isn't the violence or the killing but the idea that tribalism=morality. What we need is LESS tribalism. We need to restore some sense of common humanity before it's too late, Watching stuff like this encourages the idea that we can't trust anyone and makes us just crawl deeper into our respective caves, and repeated viewings of this sort of thing can't help but toughen our tolerance for images that SHOULD horrify us. I know this show is highly acclaimed and is written by people who actually do think about these issues - but I can't help but feel that they're using their intellect to justify gratuitous violence and nihilism instead of imagining a world where it might be possible to rise above those things.
