This just had some of that 90s magic popcorn-popping energy you know? Can't really explain it but we had a lot of fun with this one, hope you enjoy it!

Harry knows Cole is scared, much in the same way Buddy was before he died, and Harry knows if Cole gets back in the car, his fear will cause him to lose control of the car and die, like Buddy. Cole knows Harry thinks this. Cole is about to go to work on Harry. Cole says, "Buddy didn't really die of a heart attack, did he?" which means Cole has an idea of what really killed Buddy, and it wasn't carbon-monoxide. Harry says, "No He didn't, but you don't want to hear about it." But Cole does and he pushes the issue by talking about what NASCAR "privately" claimed happened, knowing Harry doesn’t believe in it. That Harry's setup is what killed Buddy. This was never proven, because Harry "quit to avoid an investigation," and Daland made a deal with NASCAR to let Harry come back without an investigation. Harry puts NASCAR's conclusion in the trash by saying, "When Buddy hit the wall, he was talking as fast as he was driving. That was the loudest-talking unconscious man you ever heard." Cole asks, "Why didn't you let them investigate?" Harry says, "I should have known better than to let him drive." Meaning Buddy was not in the right frame of mind to be driving. Buddy was scared in the same way that Cole is now. Harry feels that he was solely responsible for Buddy's death, and no investigation was going to change that. There was no point in dragging it out. Cole understands this. Harry then talks about Buddy and some similarities between him and Cole, "I've seen him do things in my car that are unbelievable. He showed me what I had done." Harry is talking about the Joy he got from watching something he had created perform so magnificently. But it wasn't worth it, if Fear was going to get someone killed. Cole then, being a Smart-Ass, on purpose, asks, "Before Buddy hit the wall, how was he doing in that race?" I interpret this as Cole saying, "everything you've been saying about Buddy doesn't matter, because I'm not Buddy. I won't freak out like Buddy." Buddy was probably doing good in the race, just before the fear got to him, and Cole is saying that won't happen to me. Harry got real angry at this because he doesn't believe it, and he feels like Cole is acting like a stupid dumbass and ignoring a Warning that he is trying to give Cole. Thus, "You ornery, no good..." "If you get back in that car, you'll die!" Cole says, "I'm not getting back in my car, I'm getting in Rowdy's." Cole being a Smart-Ass again. "You dumb drivers," meaning Buddy and Cole. Cole assures Harry by saying, "I need this Harry. I don't have anything else. You've given me a life. G*d-D*mm*t I don't want to lose it." Looking Harry in the eyes now, no blinking, Cole continues, "Put me in that racecar. Let Me be the one to show you what you've done. Just trust Me. Let Me drive, Harry. I won't make a fool out of You," repeating the line Cole said to Harry when they first met, that put Harry at ease. "I uhh... honestly just wouldn't know how this deal's going to turn out Cole. You know." "Neither do I, Harry." and that's OK.

2023-02-15 02:29:51 +0000 UTCAs far as what Cole said to Harry to set him off, when asking to race again. It even confused a lot of us for a while. But, after talking about it with others. Most agree it was a either a cut that Harry set up the car to much on the edge, or the setup caused a leak that knocked out Buddy. Add in the fact that Buddy was kind of in the same mind set as Cole at the time, so why setup the car that way? But if there was a carbon leak that was causing him to run bad, and that did knock him out. Cole "in basic" is blaming Harry either way for the crash. Harry even says "I should of never let him drive in the first place." Kind of bouncing the blame off him. Ala, why there was a investigation into it. Some say a part to explain that better, may have been cut out.

2023-02-13 17:06:23 +0000 UTCThat, actually, makes more sense of the scene later in the movie when Tom Cruise’s character admits “not knowing anything about cars.” I never could picture an F1 driver not knowing anything about cars. A sprint driver seems much more likely to be in the position of “they put me in the car and I just drove.” From viewing the F1 series, it’s astounding how much they do have to know to stand any chance of just being competitive much less successful. It was a pure guess on my part.

And also my love for Tony Scott… I even have nostalgia for the terrible Nintendo game they made from this movie. Oh man, pitting was a nightmare! It also contains one of my favorite bloopers ever. One that no one ever notices… in the scene where they go to Rowdy’s lake house and they’re walking along the beach, Rowdy’s wife comes in and says “Hi Tom!” How that got past post prediction I’ll never know.

2023-02-13 02:56:00 +0000 UTCIn NASCAR there are times in races when drivers/race teams want one member of a race to physically push a teammate briefly for various reasons. That simply cannot and does not happen in F1. The cars are too fragile and aren’t designed for it.

2023-02-12 20:10:46 +0000 UTCI’m not even sure an ‘open wheel’ car could find a way to push another car but NASCAR cars have hoods, bumpers, doors (that don’t open), the driver sits on the left hand side, though there are no other seats in the car. NASCAR rules spell out, in exacting detail, how closely the race car must adhere to the same dimensions as the civilian version of the car. NASCAR races are almost always contested on only oval tracks of varying lengths and banks. I’m not sure about Indycars racing but the Indianapolis motor speedway is, I believe, an oval. F1 tracks are, to the best of my knowledge, never simple ovals. F1 cars must be set up to make left and right turns, change some elevation, often, in the tracks while NASCAR celebrates and pokes fun at itself with NASCAR devoted news/websites with names like “All Left Turns.com” or some such.

2023-02-12 19:53:15 +0000 UTCAs this movie makes clear, though the car on the track might share a name of a car you could go buy, they are still very much custom made. With F1/Indycars, with the wheels being ‘open’ drivers do all they can to avoid contact with the wall or each other. Again, as the movie makes clear, NASCAR racing anticipates and the fans adore contact between the cars. Look at a car that’s won a race. They’ll bear all sorts of scars, scratches, dents and the like. Just a simple for example, there’s footage of a NASCAR sitting on the track completely out of gas and multi-time NASCAR champion who I think had finished the race already, Jimmy Johnson, I believe (The blue Lowe’s, I think, 48 car) drives back out on the track, gets behind him and pushes the out of gas car across the finish line. I’m sure there were financial and points implications for the driver finishing the race and no rule against “finishing the race under your own power.” I highly doubt a F1 car would even attempt something like this due to the design of the cars. There’d be a good chance you’d end up wrecking both cars with pieces flying off and who knows what else.

I’m not even 100% sure if the difference between those two but I do know that in both of those the cars appear more like the F1/‘Rush’ cars with the driver sitting in the center of the car, wings in front and back and the tires not covered in any way by the body of the car, thus ‘open wheel.’ I’m certainly prepared to be corrected. NASCAR has always billed itself and is quite proud of its roots and history of normal cars purchased and then modified/souped up/etc. Even in this movie you’ll see not just familiar makes of cars (Chevys, GMs, etc) but even familiar models of cars (Luminas if I recall, etc). The implication is that you, the viewer, could purchase the same make/model of car racing in NASCAR, though this really isn’t true. The F1/Indycars are absolute custom built from the ground up and don’t resemble a car you’d see on the street in any way, shape or form.

The guy in the movie is stereotypically French which is completely wrong. There’s a couple French communities, but Saskatoon isn’t one of them😂

I'd definitely add Risky Business as well as it was his breakout role, and The Color of Money because you can't get enough Scorsese. And ofc Rain Man like the others said.

I remember seeing this when it first came out …one of the first movies using THX sound in theaters. Your chest literally vibrates with the rev of the engines. All the Right Moves is one of Tom’s first movies that I love. Came out in 1983. It is a sports based drama. He is a high school football player. Lea Thompson from Back to the Future is in it too. Also a lesser known young Cruise movie that I have always loved is Legend.

But you could do a rabbit hole into the movies Bruckheimer's produced and find dozens that punch way above their weight class.

"We sound like the color of our hair right now" literally made me burst out laughing! With this film in the books you have now seen yet another form of racing, this being NASCAR. In "Rush" you saw Formula 1 circa 1976. In "Ford vs. Ferrari" you saw both the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the latter of which is one of the oldest and most famous endurance races in the world. Also, since it came up in your intro, "Drive To Survive" which is the Netflix show that covers Formula 1 (and has triggered the sports huge rise in popularity in the US) is actually a solid introduction to the sport and the personalities (drivers and team principals) involved. Worth checking out should you have the free time outside of your amazing work for the channel.

Cars are practically built in labs n not barns. Back in the days, waaaay less... corporate? I'm not sure what the word I'm looking for is but dozens others will likely fill in :)

Traditional style western and a love story subplot of the type you seem to enjoy. Don't know if you have watched Annette Bening yet but she's good in this as well.

2023-02-10 16:55:57 +0000 UTCPlease please please ladies never do any research before watching a film or why you’re watching it as that was the best into ever 😂😂, also really glad you liked this one Open wheels is basically Indycar or any racing car that doesn’t have covers over the wheels also like an F1 car. Even though I really like this it does have a few faults and couple of things that always annoyed me is they would have lifted off when there was that big crash not kept their foot down. As that’s the rules when a yellow flag comes out you have to slow down. I know as part of the story they had to be involved in an accident but they could have done it a different way. Also drivers always go and see other drivers at hospital if they have been in an accident, they also go to funerals and often carry the coffin. Big Jon was in Die Hard 2 he was the guy in charge of the airport and Rowdy was Yondu in Guardians of the Galaxy. This is also directed by Tony Scott who was a legend in my opinion and a little underrated that made quite a few incredible action movies. Including two I think you are definitely watching soon True Romance and Crimson Tide, but I don’t think I’ve watched a bad film that he’s ever directed Tom is a bad guy in Collateral but the film is incredible so I definitely recommend you both watch it, but I also love the Jack Reacher movies. Not sure if you guys have already got all the movies planned out for Romantic February but I’d highly recommend Cocktail from 1988 a Romcom starring Tom Cruise as a bartender I think both of you will love it.

Indy uses stock chassis if I'm not mistaken and maybe even the engines are the same, while in Formula 1 every team makes their own car according to a rule-set and there are multiple engine manufacturers, quite often having their own teams racing. So its a race not just between drivers, but also between constructors.

Interestingly, the race is held at the beginning of the season instead of the end. The Indy 500 is for a different league called IndyCar. Which is roughly the equivalent of Formula 1 here in the U.S. And the Indy 500 is their marquee event.

I', trying to think of one that isn't good.. Maybe The Mummy, but he's still Tom Cruise in it despite it not being a good movie. I hope you watch Legend soon. Probably one of his most divergent roles from his formula. Nicole Kidman fans should see Dead Calm.

2023-02-10 11:29:47 +0000 UTCBelieve it or not, a lot of those crazy moments in the movie, like the ice cream scene or the stripper scene were based off of real events. Tom Cruise sat down at a dinner with car owner Rick Hendrick (who would later own Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, and now Chase Elliott’s cars), driver Geoff Bodine, and Crew Chief Harry Hyde (inspiration for the character Harry Hogge), where he heard these stories firsthand. That’s how the idea for Days of Thunder came about. Now the rental car race never happened, but Geoff Bodine and Dale Earnhardt kept intentionally running into each other and causing problems on the track. NASCAR CEO, Bill France Jr, sat both of them down, along with their team owners and told them that they had better cut it out and quit messing up his show or they’d be out of a job. He then said they were all going to dinner and Earnhardt and Bodine would ride in the same rental car to the restaurant. Which they did 😂 Another cool fact is some of the movie cars were in the real live races with professional NASCAR drivers at the wheel. Of course they were told to stay out of the way and not to interfere with the real race. Cole Trickle was based loosely off of drivers Tim Richmond and Geoff Bodine, while Rowdy Burns was based off of Dale Earnhardt. The stripper thing actually happened to Tim Richmond, but it was at the race shop and not on the road. Of these three drivers, Bodine is the only one still with us today. He’s retired and was recently on the Dale Jr Podcast talking about these stories. Tim Richmond contracted HIV which eventually developed into AIDS and he passed away after a very short racing career in 1989. Dale Earnhardt, a 7-Time Champion, would also lose his life. He died in a crash on the last lap of the 2001 Daytona 500. There's a great 45 minute documentary about the fatal crash called The Day, which is on Youtube. Would highly recommend. 2023-02-10 10:06:08 +0000 UTCThis movie was based on the real life NASCAR rivalry between Dale Earnhardt and Geoff Bodine in the mid-late 80s. They really did try to wreck each other. They really did need to be dragged in front of NASCAR like children and told to knock it off. The teams had to be told to knock it off. Of course the rest of the movie is highly fictionalized but it's at least based somewhat in reality.

Eyes wide shut is also with Kidman, Rain man and Born of the 4th of July are really his Oscar runs and both excellent. but I also really enjoyed War of the Worlds. You've still got a couple of movies left! The thing I've always liked about cruise is that if ever he makes something that doesn't really work, he pivots and redeems himself in 3 movies or less. That and the fact that he always has a rising in the ranks co star like Jamie Foxx, Henry Cavill, Cameron Diaz, or Renée Zellweger. A great strategy that's made him the last real film star, not just because he does his own stunts, but the fact that he has movies upcoming that are still exciting to watch. He's spent decades on the top. There's not another actor that can be compared to him for consistency over the years.

2023-02-10 09:31:22 +0000 UTCSpeaking as a racing driver (albeit not a great one) Days Of Thunder is enjoyable hokum though there are some bits of it which make you cringe (Never, ever, ever downshift when you're at full revs with a racing transmission, or indeed any sort of transmission, it doesn't help you magically gain extra speed to pass the car ahead, it just blows your engine and your gearbox into little bits. To be fair, Ford vs Ferrari also made this mistake). Robert Duvall is superb in everything he's in though which redeems everything here. If you and Carly want to see the *best* fictional racing movie it has to be "Grand Prix" from 1966. It's technically astonishing for the time (several camera techniques were literally invented for it and it won Oscars on the technical side) and absolutely captures what Formula One was like on the 1960s (ie utterly crazy). It's an utterly beautiful film and everything they had to do in it race wise they pretty much did for real, even down to actual members of the cast being instructed by F1 drivers of the period so they could do some of their own driving. Oh and there's a love story . . . And it's got James Garner in it. You'd love it Cass.

To me, the only films of his to avoid are maybe some of the early ones like Losin' It. The Mummy was not great. Lions for Lambs, I hated. That's about it. Oblivion & Jack Reacher 2, I thought were meh. Minor quibbles with a few others, but those are my own personal qualms, because I'm picky. Take it for what it's worth. Rain Man is the best one, though.
